第五十二屆香港藝術節隆重舉行,可喜可賀。

歷經五十餘年,香港藝術節已成為享譽國際的文化盛 事。今屆藝術節續放異彩,雲集約1,400名本地及海 外藝術家,帶來逾150場不同類型的表演,由音樂、 歌劇、戲曲,以至戲劇、舞蹈、跨媒體藝術和大型特 備節目等,必定是另一場令人難忘的藝術盛宴。

今屆藝術節以李察.史特勞斯的《拿索斯島的亞莉安 妮》揭開序幕,由巴伐利亞國立歌劇院獻上這齣莊諧 並重的精妙劇作,令人期待。個多月後,上海芭蕾舞

團將呈獻中國與法國聯合製作的《花樣年華》,作為 藝術節的閉幕表演。這齣精彩絕倫、中西協作的芭蕾 舞劇,正好反映香港獨特的中西創意文化根源,並彰 顯我們作為中外文化藝術交流中心的重要地位。今年 藝術節匯聚全球各地佳作,包括別具一格的「聚焦當 代阿拉伯」系列,更形豐富多采。

我對香港的文藝創意事業前景充滿信心。政府銳意竭 盡所能,鼓勵本地藝術家奮發向上,並確保他們獲 得所需和應得的表演機會。正如我在《施政報告》所 述,新成立的文創產業發展處每年會推動60個業界考 察團、海外展覽及其他文化展演活動;「電影發展基 金」和「創意智優計劃」共獲注資43億元,以支持本 港電影業;「重點演藝項目計劃」亦即將推出,協助 本地大型表演藝術創作,以及培育代表香港的國際文 化品牌。

政府會繼續與各界攜手合作,積極推動文化藝術及創 意業界的發展。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the organisation of its 52nd edition.

Over this past half century and more, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has grown into a celebrated international cultural event. This year promises to be another memorable Festival, featuring about 1,400 overseas and local artists in more than 150 performances across multiple genres, from music, opera and Chinese opera to theatre, dance, multi-arts and large-scale special events.

This year’s Festival opens with the Bayerische Staatsoper’s presentation of Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, a bravura mingling of high art and comedy. It closes, more than a month later, with the Sino-French coproduction of the Shanghai Ballet’s A Sigh of Love. This inspired East-West collaboration reflects Hong Kong’s singular East-West creative and cultural roots and our growing role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange. Indeed, this year’s Festival is rife with performances from all over the world, including a special Arab Arts Focus series.

I believe in Hong Kong’s creative promise, and my Government is determined to do all it can to encourage our local artists and ensure that they have the performance access they need and deserve. As I mentioned in my Policy Address, our newly established Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency will promote 60 industry missions, overseas exhibitions and other cultural showcases annually; a total of $4.3 billion will be injected into the Film Development Fund and the CreateSmart Initiative to support our film industry; and the Signature Performing Arts Programme Scheme will be launched to assist largescale, local performing arts productions and nurture the development of Hong Kong cultural brands internationally. The Government will continue to work hand in hand with relevant sectors to proactively promote the development of arts, culture and creative industries.

I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival for its longstanding commitment to the arts, and to the Festival’s many sponsors and donors for their generous support.

I warmly welcome you to the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival. Thank you for your staunch support, especially during and after the tumultuous period brought by the pandemic. With the Festival now back in full swing, we cherish this opportunity to come together once again and appreciate the arts with you. As we celebrate the Festival’s full-scale comeback and contemplate the development of the arts in this ever-changing environment, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who has played a critical role in nurturing and sustaining the performing arts scene.

I would like to thank the HKSAR Government, acting through the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which has graciously provided an annual subvention that serves as the bedrock of our ongoing efforts. 走過半世紀的香港藝術節,一直為國際與本地最優秀 的表演者搭建舞台,積極促進中外文化交流。經歷了 三年疫情的洗禮,藝術節終於在第52屆再度迎來「花 樣年華」,在全面復常的狀態下再度為本地觀眾與遊 客獻上今天和明日的經典,不單讓大家可以從眾多音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇、戲曲和多媒體作品中重新細賞遺世 瑰寶,更邀來多位重量級中外大師坐鎮,陣容鼎盛、 豐富多元,足以滿足不同觀眾群體的喜好。

今屆我們繼續支持本地藝術發展,為香港的藝術家提 供創作土壤,更連結國際及本地精英聯手開闢藝術新 境界。同時鼓勵藝術家善用創新科技融合創意,為觀 眾帶來耳目一新的體驗。

For more than half a century, the Hong Kong Arts Festival has provided a stage for the most outstanding local and international performers, and actively enhanced cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world. After three years of the pandemic, we are delighted to come back in full force and present to local audiences and overseas visitors treasured classics of today and tomorrow. Our programme features an eclectic lineup of music, dance, theatre, Chinese opera and multimedia productions, with a range of Chinese and international legends set to command the stage. With such a rich and diverse programme, there is something to delight everyone.

This year, our ongoing support for the development of local artists provides opportunities for them to flex their creative muscles through collaborations with leading artists from all over the world. At the same time, we also empower artists to innovate through the power of technology and create refreshing experiences for our audiences.

An International Arts Festival in Hong Kong Connecting China and the World

香港藝術節 於1973年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要的 文化盛事,於每年2、3月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地及國 際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」和教育 活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活。

香港藝術節 是一所非牟利機構,2023/24財政年度預 計收入(包括第52屆香港藝術節及2024年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億五千萬,當中香港特區政府的年度撥款佔 總收入約12%,另外約25%需來自票房收入,約48% 則須依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈善基金會的贊 助和捐款。預計餘下的約15%則來自其他收入,包括 政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的配對資助。

香港藝術節 積極與本地演藝人才合作,並致力為新進 藝術家提供展示才華的平台。藝術節至今委約及製 作逾250套本地全新創作,包括粵劇、戲劇、室內歌 劇、音樂和舞蹈作品,不少製作更已在香港及海外多 度重演。近年的藝術節新製作包括《飯戲攻心》踏台 版、《末戀 無愛合約》、《我們最快樂》、《鼠疫》、 《陪着你走》、《百花亭贈劍》、《香港家族》三部曲、

The HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts, as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events, in February and March each year.

The HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total estimated income for FY2023/24 (including the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2024 “No Limits” programme) is approximately HK$150 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 12% of the Festival’s total income. Around 25% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 48% from sponsorship and donations by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 15% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching grant scheme, which matches income generated through private-sector sponsorship and donations.

The HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions across various genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Table for Six on Stage, Loveless Romance, We Are Gay, The Plague, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節 多年來與知名海外藝術家及團體聯合製作 不少優秀作品,當中包括由香港藝術節、香港歌德學 院及翩娜.包殊烏珀塔爾舞蹈劇場聯合製作的《抹窗 人》、由倫敦老域劇院、布魯克林音樂學院與尼爾街 製作公司製作、香港藝術節為聯合委約機構之一的 「橫貫計劃」之《暴風雨》及《李察三世》、由香港 藝術節及上海國際藝術節聯合委約的《青蛇》、香港 藝術節與三藩市歌劇院聯合製作的《紅樓夢》、香港 藝術節與芬蘭國家歌劇院及芭蕾舞團聯合製作的《拉 娜》等。

香港藝術節 大力投資下一代的藝術教育。「青少年之 友」成立31年來,已為逾820,000位本地中學生及大專 生提供藝術體驗活動。藝術節近年亦開展多項針對大、 中、小學生的藝術教育活動,包括由國際及本地藝術家 主持的示範講座及工作坊、學生展演、演前講座、公開 彩排以及欣賞藝術節演出。同時,通過「學生票捐助計 劃」,藝術節每年提供約10,000張半價學生票。

香港藝術節每年主辦一系列多元化並深入社區的「加料 節目」,例如電影放映、示範講座、大師班、工作坊、 座談會、後台參觀、展覽、藝人談、文化導賞團等, 鼓勵觀眾與藝術家互動接觸。

香港藝術節亦銳意將共融藝術理念拓展到社區每一角 落。由藝術節與香港賽馬會慈善信託基金聯合呈獻 的「無限亮」計劃於2019年正式開展,透過一系列的 演出及多元的教育及社區外展節目,「無限亮」致力 創造共融空間,讓不同能力人士均可以一同欣賞、參 與、擁抱藝術。

為創造更穩健的財政環境以及確保藝術節的長期可持 續性, 香港藝術節基金會 於2022年成立,旨在讓藝術 節在未來進行年度預算以外的大型特別項目。

The HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer), co-produced by the HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch; Richard III and The Tempest, produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with the HKAF as a co-commissioning institution; Green Snake, co-commissioned with the Shanghai International Arts Festival; Dream of the Red Chamber, co-produced with the San Francisco Opera; and Laila, a co-production of the HKAF and the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. During the past 31 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached more than 820,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 halfprice student tickets each year.

The HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions and guided cultural tours.

The HKAF actively promotes inclusion via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

To provide greater financial security and long-term sustainability for the Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival Foundation was officially launched in 2022. Donations to the Foundation will be used towards enabling the Festival to present in the future large-scale projects which its annual budget cannot cater for.

羅馬人都在歡慶不敗戰神凱撒凱旋歸來,但 歡樂背面卻潛藏殺機。

由貴族掌權的元老院,不滿凱撒的權力 及民心日益坐大。賈修司力勸羅馬最受愛戴 的英雄之一——卜拓思,挺身對抗凱撒。在 眾多元老密謀計劃下,加上不滿安東尼三次 獻上桂冠,簇擁凱撒稱王,卜拓思為維護共 和,經歷一番內心交戰後,決定阻止凱撒成 為暴君。

不顧預言者警告,亦無懼三月十五日 晚上的可怕異象,凱撒依約出席議會。暗殺 者包圍着他,假意為被判刑的辛伯求情。當 凱撒拒絕時,暗殺者一擁而上。凱撒被刺 二十三刀,傷重倒地。最後,他的愛將卜拓 思補上最後一刀,一代巨人心碎而亡。

凱撒死後,卜拓思向憤怒的群眾說:「我 愛凱撒,但我更愛羅馬」,此一聲明感動了人 們。百姓為他高呼,認為卜拓思行正義,該 為他立雕像。接着,安東尼弔祭,他巧妙操 縱群眾心理,利用一場精采演說,使百姓轉 而同情凱撒之死,並誓言為他報仇雪恨。

殘酷的內戰,鋪天蓋地掀起。最後,安 東尼贏得勝利,叛黨遭受殲滅。賈修司和卜 拓思都以殺死凱撒的同一把刀自盡,結束了 噩夢般的悲劇。

The Romans are celebrating the triumphant return of Julius Caesar, the invincible hero. However, a deadly plot lurks beneath the joy.

The patrician senators resent the increasingly powerful and popular Caesar. Cassius urges Brutus, one of Rome's most respected heroes, to rise up against Caesar along with other conspiring senators. Brutus is agonised by Antony's attempts to crown Caesar. After an internal struggle, Brutus decides to join the assassination for the sake of upholding the republic.

Despite the soothsayer's warning and a terrifying vision on the previous night, Caesar goes to the Capitol to attend a council meeting on the Ides of March. The conspiring senators pretend to plead for Cimber. After Caesar refuses their request, he is stabbed 23 times and falls to the ground. After a final blow from his beloved Brutus, Caesar dies with a broken heart.

After Caesar's death, Brutus pacifies the angry crowd by proclaiming “I loved Caesar, but I loved Rome more”. The people applaud his righteousness and propose to erect a statue in his honour. Antony then offers his eulogy. His brilliant speech steers the people's minds to sympathise with Caesar and they vow to avenge him.

A brutal civil war breaks out. Ultimately, Antony secures victory and the conspirators are annihilated. Cassius and Brutus commit suicide with the same knife they used to stab Caesar, putting the nightmarish tragedy to an end.

詩人再現,已成卜拓思,殘壁浮雕復活, 凱撒大軍踏着勝利步伐,萬人空巷,百姓 灑花歡迎。賈修司與眾元老一再慫恿卜拓思 挺身而出,為了羅馬,阻止凱撒獨裁稱帝, 維護共和。卜拓思不滿安東尼三度在人民面 前獻上桂冠,簇擁凱撒稱王,內心充滿衝突 矛盾。旅人捲入歷史黑洞,目睹一切發生。

第三章:異象

龐培頭像被群眾砍斷,天出異象,電閃雷 殛、天崩地裂。卜拓思悲憤曾經效忠的龐 培將軍遭辱,決心討伐凱撒。

Scene 1: Somniloquy

In an ancient ruin, the Traveller encounters the Poet, who reminisces and sighs over history's rise and fall, “Magnificent was the palace; no sooner did a man fall, than he was replaced by another.” A gust of cold, wind and a dark shadow frighten the Poet as he searches for an exit in a panic.

Scene 2: A Triumphant Return

The Poet returns as Brutus and the remnants of ancient reliefs come to life. Caesar's army marches home in victory, receiving flowers and a warm welcome. Cassius and the senators persistently urge Brutus to lead the republic in Rome and prevent Caesar from declaring himself emperor. Brutus resents Antony for repeatedly offering the crown to Caesar in public, but he feels conflicted. The Traveller is swept into the vortex of history and becomes an observer of the spectacle.

Scene 3: The Omen

Pompey’s statue is destroyed by the crowd, and a strange phenomenon appears. A storm rages, lightning strikes and the sky seems to collapse. Brutus is indignant about the humiliation of Pompey, whom he once followed, and is determined to kill Caesar.

Scene 4: Caesar

Emerging like a deity from the depths of an ancient valley, Caesar proclaims towards Heaven, “Veni, Vidi, Vici!” (“I came, I saw, I conquered”). The half-mad Soothsayer warns him: Beware the Ides of March!

凱撒依約來到元老院,卻遭到了無情殘酷 的謀殺,而令他心灰絕望的是,帶領背叛 的,是他最倚仗的愛將卜拓思!

第六章:祭壇

卜拓思要羅馬人彎下腰以血淨手,他說:「多 少偉大的演員將一次次重演這一幕,凱撒也 將在戲劇中一次次流血」。他以「我愛凱撒, 但我更愛羅馬」,為背恩忘義尋得正當理由 並獲得人民的支持。隨後,安東尼發表弔祭 演說,他巧妙操縱群眾心理,使百姓轉而同 情凱撒之死,誓言血債血還。

第七章:內戰

戰鼓、號角,一場激烈血腥的戰爭,安東尼 和卜拓思兩軍廝殺,烽火連天!

第八章:分歧

卜拓思在軍帳,焦躁不安,難以入眠。賈修 司前來,兩人為軍紀與正義翻臉爭執。賈修 司表示畏戰,以酒敬告生離死別之情。

第九章:夢回

詩人穿越過萬里千秋而來,宣告賈修司死訊。

卜拓思見凱撒鬼魂,驚覺是三月十五日,一 切都是無盡的循環。帝國與共和的辯證沒有 結論,於是,終局有了意外的收場。

Scene 5: Assassination

Caesar arrives at the Capitol as promised but is brutally murdered. In his final moment, he feels disheartened as the very man leading the assassination is none other than his most trusted general Brutus!

Scene 6: The Altar

Brutus asks the Romans to bow down and cleanse their hands in blood. He declares, “How many eminent actors shall replay this scene? How many times shall Caesar bleed in sport?” Claiming that his love for Rome overrides his loyalty to Caesar, Brutus convinces the public that Caesar had to die, and thus wins the hearts of the people. But Antony delivers a speech and leads the public to sympathise with Caesar, turning them against the conspirators to seek vengeance.

Scene 7: Civil War

The thunderous sounds of war drums and trumpets fill the air. As the battle fire rages on, a brutal civil war breaks out between Antony and Brutus.

Scene 8: Chasm

Anxious and restless, Brutus cannot sleep in his tent. He argues with Cassius about discipline and justice. Cassius confesses his fears, and toasts to take his last farewell.

Scene 9: Spectre

The Poet crosses countless epochs and arrives to announce Cassius’ death. Brutus encounters the ghost of Caesar. With a shiver down his spine, he realises that it is the Ides of March, and he is caught in an infinite loop. Their debate over the empire and the republic fails to reach a conclusion, and the ending takes a surprising turn.

From Theatre to Wasteland: Heroes on a Wheel of Fortune

《凱撒》是我改編的第六部莎士比亞劇作,從 1986年當代傳奇劇場創團作品《慾望城國》到 2024年《凱撒》,劃出了一道演藝生命的坐 標。這些作品實踐了我從三十歲到七十歲的 劇場探索之路,而創作概念也由突破戲曲程 式表演、融入舞台劇和電影手法的《慾望城 國》和《王子復仇記》,進入前衛、解構、實 驗的獨腳戲《李爾在此》,以及魔幻歌舞劇 《暴風雨》、跨界音樂劇《仲夏夜之夢》—— 每一步都是我投向世界劇場大門的敲門磚、 試金石。

而今,正逢藝術人生關鍵階段,我應香 港藝術節盛情邀約,得以和崑曲王子張軍同 台共續前緣。我們又獲音樂大師許舒亞為這 部作品編寫現代歌劇,加上科技聲光輔助, 一起思索如何成就一齣具兩千年氣魄與史詩 底蘊的作品。莎翁經典的高度,令我崇仰不 已,但亦更能激發我強大的鬥志,要拿東方 靈魂與肉身與之搏鬥、爭鋒!

「我來,我見,我征服」(I come, I see, I conquer!),是凱撒攻城掠地之後,發下的 豪語。睿智勇猛如神的凱撒,亦逃不過宮廷 叛亂的謀殺,最終引來驚天動地的血腥內 戰。強盛繁華的羅馬在一夕之間,化為漫天 烽煙的廢墟。

一人倒下,一人再起。

歷史如此。生命如此。 劇埸如此。人生如此。

Julius Caesar is the sixth of my Shakespearean adaptations, marking another milestone in my career that started with Contemporary Legend Theatre’s founding work based on Macbeth in 1986. My journey in theatre exploration took me from the age of 30 to 70, with the creative concepts ranging from Macbeth, which broke through formulaic performances in opera to incorporate theatrical and cinematic techniques, to Hamlet; from the avant-garde, deconstructive and experimental one-man show King Lear and the magical musical theatre The Tempest, to the crossover musical A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Each production was a touchstone in my quest for a theatre of the world.

Now at a critical stage in my artistic life, I was invited to perform with “the prince of kun opera” Zhang Jun by the Hong Kong Arts Festival. We also invited music master Xu Shuya to compose a modern opera for this work, and with the technical assistance of sound and lighting, we contemplated how to create a work with a very old soul and a rich background of ancient poetry. Shakespeare’s classic not only deserves great admiration, but it also inspires my fighting spirit to compete with a soul and body from the East.

“I came, I saw, I conquered!” was the bold statement by Julius Caesar after he was victorious. The wise and brave Caesar, however, could not escape betrayal and rebellion, which led to a bloody civil war that shocked the world. The once mighty and prosperous Rome turned into a smouldering ruin overnight.

One man falls, another rises.

So goes history.

So are living things.

So is the theatre.

So is life.

廿一世紀的凱撒與疫情

When Heroes Come to a Dead End Caesar and the Pandemic in the 21st Century

台灣戲曲名家吳興國成立的「當代傳奇劇 場」以莎劇起家,1986年憑着《慾望城 國》(改編自莎士比亞的《馬克白》)一戰 成名。四十年來,劇團不斷思考傳統和創 新之路,早已成為以傳統劇場形式搬演西 方經典的代表性亞洲劇團。吳興國坦言, 往後希望專注培育新秀,所以新作《凱撒 大帝》可能是他告別舞台之作——以莎劇 作為創作歷程的最後註腳,意味莎劇對他 的藝術生涯意義非凡。

Founded by Chinese opera actor Wu Hsing-kuo from Taiwan, Contemporary Legend Theatre started out performing Shakespeare’s plays and gained instant fame in 1986 with The Kingdom of Desire (adapted from Macbeth). For 40 years, the company has been integrating tradition with innovation by presenting Western classics in the style of Chinese opera. And now, Wu is appearing in what could be his final performance, as he plans to focus on nurturing new talent in the future. And the fact that it’s a version of Julius Caesar is testament to the impact Shakespeare has had on his artistic trajectory.

莎士比亞的《凱撒》講述古羅馬英雄凱 撒被愛將卜拓思刺殺,最終引發一場導致民 主共和滅亡的戰爭。劇中民主和專制的關係 弔詭、界線模糊,令人玩味的是,莎翁未為 兩方立場下定論,而是賦予人物複雜多面的 心理。《凱撒》在華語世界鮮少被演出,吳興 國慧眼相中《凱撒》,認為此劇提出的許多問 題和隱喻,與疫情過後的當下出奇契合。尤 其是疫情讓我們經歷了世界的停止、人的孤 立,但也給所有人反省和重新出發的機會。

在後疫情時代,相信當代觀眾對莎翁的詰 問,將有一番切身體悟。

「雕像」作為貫穿全劇的主題,隱喻凱撒 雖死而餘威尚在。由舞台和影像科技創造的 雕像,為演員的表演營造巨大衝突感。在戲 曲與科技影像的結合上,當代傳奇劇場無疑 是華語世界,乃至亞洲傳統劇場領域的先行 者。吳興國意識到戲曲若要成為二十一世紀 的當代藝術,便無法迴避科技運用。但如何 善用科技影像,又不讓演員的身體與靈魂被 科技掩埋,他認為創作者應深刻理解科技藝 術的特質,「把影像變成你的人物。」

吳興國與張軍兩大劇曲泰斗的結合,是 這次製作的焦點所在,但其創作概念實遠不 止於此。吳興國點出,為了統合諸多跨域元 素,音樂創作才是全劇靈魂,不僅要融會京 崑,還要展現凱撒事件的衝突掙扎。作曲家 許舒亞為《凱撒大帝》創造出迴盪的氛圍和 充滿史詩感的音樂,加上戲曲原有的豐富音 樂性,將販夫走卒、帝王將相等人表現得淋 漓盡致。正如吳興國所言,此次演出不僅是 京崑的結合,更是科技與表演藝術相融的原 創性歌舞音樂劇。戲曲歷經千年發展,吳興 國和當代傳奇劇場用自己的方式證明,即使 進入二十一世紀,戲曲仍是與時俱進的當代 藝術。

Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is a story of a war sparked by Brutus’ assassination of Roman leader Caesar and ending with the fall of the Roman Republic. The audience is faced with the paradoxes and blurred lines between democracy and autocracy, but Shakespeare provides no clear answers and adds complexity to the plot by using multifaceted characters. Although Julius Caesar is rarely performed in Chinese theatres, Wu believes that it provides questions and metaphors worth thinking about in these post-pandemic times. COVID-19 brought everything to a halt, forcing us into isolation, but it also gave us an opportunity to reflect on our lives and even have a fresh start. Now that the pandemic has passed, many will find the questions posed by Shakespeare to be particularly relevant.

The statue of Caesar that appears throughout the play represents the former leader’s living legacy, so one is created using stage design and projections, acting as a strong backdrop for the actors’ performances. The use of such technology shows why Contemporary Legend Theatre is considered a leader among traditional Chinese and even Asian theatre companies. But while Wu understands that the use of new technology is essential for Chinese opera to be considered contemporary art in the 21st century, he does not want this to overshadow the actors who put their hearts and souls into their performances. Still, he believes creators should become knowledgeable about the properties of arts tech, and “make the images into your characters”.

For this production, the spotlight is clearly on the collaboration between two leading figures of Chinese opera, Wu and Zhang Jun, but there’s much more to this version of Julius Caesar. Wu says the music is the key to multidisciplinary projects such as this, and efforts have been made to ensure the Peking and kun opera music harmonises together, and that the melodies bring out the conflicts and struggles in the plot. The epic music created by composer Xu Shuya for Julius Caesar, together with the richness of Chinese opera music, helps paint a vivid and detailed portrait of the characters from all walks of life, whether they are from the grassroots or the ruling class. As Wu points out, this performance is more than a simple combination of Peking and kun opera, but an original musical showcasing the application of technology in the performing arts. Chinese opera has a history spanning thousands of years, and Wu and Contemporary Legend Theatre are showing that Chinese opera can change with the times and remain relevant as a contemporary art form even in the 21st century.

1986年,一群戲曲演員意識到傳統藝術的優 勢不再,開始思索如何使傳統戲曲與當代劇場 接軌。在藝術總監吳興國的帶領下,「當代傳 奇劇場」於焉誕生。改編自莎士比亞悲劇《馬 克白》的創團作品《慾望城國》,將傳統京戲 的唱、唸、做、打融入西方經典,顛覆了傳統 舞台,締造文化跨界美學。之後,劇團年年 應邀赴海外演出,足跡遍及英國倫敦國家劇 院、法國亞維儂藝術節、美國林肯中心藝術節、 英國愛丁堡國際藝術節等二十多國及六十個城 市。

當代傳奇劇場的創作多元,改編自莎翁名 劇的有《慾望城國》、《王子復仇記》、《李爾在 此》、《暴風雨》,希臘悲劇系列《樓蘭女》、

《奧瑞斯提亞》,改編自諾貝爾文學獎得主貝克 特的荒誕劇《等待果陀》,以及改編自契訶夫 十四篇短篇小說的《歡樂時光》文創複合型音 樂劇。

當代傳奇劇場對於傳承和教育更是不遺 餘力,致力京劇人才培育,曾創作青春活力的 《搖滾水滸108三部曲》和《嘻哈兄妹串戲》系 列,深受年輕觀眾喜愛。

In 1986, a group of xiqu performers noticed the decline of traditional arts. In consideration of how to integrate traditional opera with contemporary theatre, Contemporary Legend Theatre was founded under the leadership of Artistic Director Wu Hsing-kuo. Adapted from Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, the theatre’s founding production, The Kingdom of Desire, merged the four performing techniques of singing, reciting, acting and martial arts in traditional Peking opera with Western classics, subverting the traditional stage and creating a cultural interdisciplinary aesthetic. Since then, the troupe has been invited to perform in over 20 countries and 60 cities, including the Royal National Theatre in London, the Avignon Festival in France, the Lincoln Centre Arts Festival in the USA, and the Edinburgh International Festival in the UK, among others.

Contemporary Legend Theatre has presented a diverse array of productions, including adaptations of Shakespeare’s classics Hamlet, King Lear and The Tempest; the Greek Tragedy Series Medea and Oresteia; the absurdist drama Waiting for Godot, adapted from the play by Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett; as well as Run! Chekhov!, a creative and innovative musical adapted from Chekhov’s 14 short stories.

Contemporary Legend Theatre has been devoted to inheritance and education, and has dedicated itself to the cultivation of Peking opera talents, but it has also branched out with the rock ’n’ roll 108 Heroes trilogy and the hiphop production B.Box of Brother and Sister, both of which were well received by young audiences.

吳興國畢業於復興劇校、中國文化大學戲劇系, 具備導演、編劇、編腔、表演等多方面才華,為 台灣少數橫跨電影、電視、傳統戲曲、現代劇場 以及舞蹈界的全方位表演藝術家。

1986年,吳興國聯合一群青年京劇演員創立 當代傳奇劇場,編、導及主演多齣融合現代劇場 形式的京劇作品。改編自莎劇《馬克白》的創團 作品《慾望城國》,一舉成功,成為當代傳奇劇 場的經典劇目,更獲邀於各大國際藝術節演出, 足跡遍及英國國家劇院和法國亞維儂藝術節等。

爾後,吳興國又陸續創作了莎士比亞、希臘 悲劇、貝克特與契訶夫經典的改編作,成為傳統 戲曲藝術發展與創新的掌旗「先鋒」人物,每推 出新作皆引起熱烈的迴響與討論。

吳興國追求由內而外的全能劇場表演,並勇 於突破創新,其足跡遍及東西方重要表演場域。

他於2010年獲得台灣最高榮譽表演獎,2011年 又獲法國文化部頒發「法國文化藝術騎士勳章」。

Artistic Director, Script Adaptation, Director, Actor Wu Hsing-kuo

Wu Hsing-kuo graduated from the NTCPA in Taiwan and the Department of Theatre Arts at the Chinese Culture University. Skilled in directing, screenwriting, vocal arrangement and acting, he is one of the few artists who straddle diverse art forms such as film, television, traditional Chinese opera, modern theatre and dance.

In 1986, Wu founded Contemporary Legend Theatre with a group of young Peking opera actors, and has since written, directed and starred in many Peking opera works that incorporate various aspects of modern theatre. The founding production The Kingdom of Desire, adapted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, was an instant success and has been performed at major art festivals internationally, including the Royal National Theatre in London and the Festival d’Avignon in France.

Contemporary Legend Theatre later created dramas adapted from Shakespeare, Greek tragedies, Beckett and Chekhov, becoming a pioneer in the development and innovation of traditional Chinese opera art, receiving an enthusiastic response for every new work.

Wu pursues all-round theatre performance from the inside out and has the courage to make breakthroughs and innovations. He has travelled throughout important performance venues in the East and the West. In 2010, he won the highest honour for performance in Taiwan. In 2011, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres-Chevalier by the French Minister of Culture.

張軍,上海戲劇學院附屬戲曲學校校長,聯合國 教科文組織和平藝術家。國家一級演員、「梅花 獎」得主,素有中國「崑曲王子」之美譽。

專工崑劇小生,師承著名表演藝術家蔡正 仁、岳美緹和周志剛,是俞振飛大師的再傳弟 子,曾獲中國戲劇表演梅花獎、上海白玉蘭戲劇 表演主角獎、聯合國促進崑劇發展大獎、上海市 十大傑出青年等榮譽。從藝三十年來,主演過 《牡丹亭》、《長生殿》、《春江花月夜》、《我,哈 姆雷特》等多部大戲,在崑劇舞台上塑造了多個 風格迥異的角色。2010年,由張軍主演的譚盾歌 劇《馬可.波羅》獲得該年度美國格文美獎提名。

張軍長期致力於崑曲藝術的普及和推廣:自 1998年至今,他策劃主持的「崑劇走近青年」互 動演出和「我是小生」、「給過去一個未來」互動 講座,已在包括美國哈佛大學在內的海內外大中 學校舉行了四百餘場。

為表彰張軍在崑曲表演藝術方面的深厚造詣 和長期以來在推廣非物質文化遺產,特別是崑曲 藝術的傳播方面所作出的貢獻,聯合國教科文組 織於2011年授予張軍「和平藝術家」稱號。他也 是繼中國演員鞏俐和中國殘疾人藝術團之後,第 三位獲得此項殊榮的華人藝術家。

Actor Zhang Jun

A National First-Class performer, Zhang Jun is the Principal of the Shanghai Traditional Opera School Affiliated to Shanghai Theatre Academy and a UNESCO Artist for Peace, earning a reputation as the “prince of kun opera”.

Specialising in xiaosheng (young male) roles, Zhang studied under renowned kun artists Cai Zhengren, Yue Meiti and Zhou Zhigang, and is a second-generation protégé of the legendary kun maestro Yu Zhenfei. His numerous acting awards include the China Theatre Plum Blossom Award and the Shanghai Magnolia Award for Lead Actor, while he has also been named among the Top Ten Outstanding Young People in Shanghai. During the past 30 years, Zhang has starred in various productions including The Peony Pavilion, Palace of Eternal Youth, Blossoms on a Spring Moonlit Night and I, Hamlet, bringing to the stage some of the bestloved characters in kun opera. In addition, Tan Dun’s opera Marco Polo, in which Zhang played the lead role, was nominated for the Grawemeyer Award in 2010.

Apart from his achievements as a performing artist, Zhang has devoted himself to introducing kun opera traditions to audiences. Since 1998, he has organised more than 400 interactive performances of Kun Opera Approaching Young People and the interactive lectures “I Am a Xiaosheng” and “Give the Past a Future” held in high schools and universities in both China and the West, including Harvard University in the USA.

Zhang was named a UNESCO Artist for Peace in honour of his long-term dedication to promoting the intangible cultural heritage of kun opera, making him the third Chinese recipient of the title following film actress Gong Li and the China Disabled People’s Performing Art Troupe.

Lyricist, Script Adaptation Bi-qi Beatrice Lei

Bi-qi Beatrice Lei is Founding Chair of the Asian Shakespeare Association. She received her PhD in English from New York University, and has published on Sir Philip Sidney, Shakespeare, early modern culture, intercultural theatre, films, television and popular culture. She has taught at Taiwan’s Tsing Hua University and Taiwan University, and is Founding Director of the Taiwan Shakespeare Database, an open-access online performance archive hosted by NTU’s Research Centre for Digital Humanities. Lei currently serves as Vice-Chair of the International Shakespeare Association and Assistant Director of the Shakespeare Association of America, and is chairing the programme committee of the 2026 World Shakespeare Congress in Verona.

許舒亞,巴黎音樂學院作曲博士,活躍於歐美等 地的亞洲作曲家。他歷任上海音樂學院院長、第 十二屆全國政協委員,上海音樂家協會主席及中 國音樂家協會理事,更入選國家「萬人計劃」哲 學社會科學領軍人才,中宣部「四個一批」暨文 藝名家、上海市領軍人才、上海「東方學者」, 享受國務院政府特殊津貼。1991年以室內樂作 品《秋天的隕落》於歐洲樂壇獲得注目,並在法 國龐畢度中心向全世界徵集音樂作品的比賽活 動中脫穎而出,成為233名候選作曲家之中唯一 入選的東方作曲家,及後更連年獲得不同國際 大獎。

Composer Xu Shuya

Xu Shuya holds a PhD in Composition from the Paris Conservatory and is an Asian composer active in Europe and the USA. He has served as Dean of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, a member of the 12th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Chairperson of the Shanghai Musicians’ Association, and Director of the Chinese Musicians’ Association. Selected as the leading expert in philosophy and social sciences in the national “Ten Thousand People's Scheme”; a “Batch of Four” talent of the Publicity Department as well as a literary and artistic master, Shanghai leading personnel, and a Shanghai “Oriental Scholar”, he is entitled to special government allowances from the State Council. Since 1991, he has attracted attention in Europe with his chamber orchestra work Chute en Automne. He stood out from the 233 nominees in the worldwide competition collecting musical works from all over the world at the renowned Pompidou Centre in France, and was the only Asian composer selected. Xu has won various international awards over the years.

林秀偉現為太古踏舞團藝術總監及當代傳奇劇場 行政總監。1987年與吳興國共同創立太古踏舞團。

林秀偉透過肢體探索生命,以獨特的東方哲 思和新世紀精神融入自然原始的生命,藉此觸及 心靈並讓內在感官悸動。

發表過《世紀末神話》、《生之曼陀羅》、 《五色羅盤》、《無盡胎藏》、《詩與花的獨言》等 十四齣作品,更數度應邀出席國際藝術節演出。

林秀偉同時兼任當代傳奇劇場製作人及團長,並 長期擔任戲劇肢體及編舞工作。

她近期亦投入劇本創作,其作品包括《霸王 別姬》(韓國國家劇院)、《夢蝶》和《樓蘭女》(當 代傳奇劇場)。

Producer, Choreographer Lin Hsiu-wei

Lin Hsiu-wei is the Artistic Director of Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre and Executive Director of Contemporary Legend Theatre. She co-founded Tai Gu Tales Dance Theatre with Wu Hsing-kuo in 1987.

Lin explores life through the body, integrating the primitive nature of life with a unique Eastern philosophy and modern spirit, touching the inner soul and senses.

She has produced 14 works, including the Myth of the Last Century, The Life of Mandela, Compass, The Back of Beyond and Obsession of the Stone, among others. Lin is the producer of Contemporary Legend Theatre and has long been engaged in physical theatre and choreography.

Recently, she has created scripts for productions including Farewell My Concubine (National Theater of Korea), Butterfly Dream and Medea (Contemporary Legend Theatre).

服裝設計 賴宣吾

賴宣吾於2000年開始參與電影、音樂影片及電視 劇拍攝,參與之作品多達百餘部。2011年在徐克 導演的《龍門飛甲》中擔任服裝及造型指導,更 憑此片入圍並獲得多個國際獎項,包括2012年第 六屆亞洲電影大獎最佳服裝造型設計獎。由他擔 任美術指導的電影《金孫》入圍2012年台北電影 獎、聖保羅影展最佳劇情長片;《家好月圓》則 榮獲韓國首爾女性影展評審團大獎。

他與當代傳奇劇場合作的作品有《兄妹串 戲》、《水滸108——上梁山、忠義堂》及《蛻變》。

Costume Designer Lai Hsuan-wu

Lai Hsuan-wu has worked on more than 100 films, music videos and television dramas. In 2011, he worked as a costume designer on Tsui Hark’s 3D film Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, which was shortlisted for several international awards, included Best Costume Design at the sixth Asian Film Awards in 2012. He also served as the Artistic Director of the film The Golden Child, which was shortlisted for the 2012 Taipei Film Awards and selected for the São Paulo International Film Festival, as well as With or Without You, which won the Jury Prize at the Seoul Women’s Film Festival in South Korea in 2009. He collaborated with Contemporary Legend Theatre on the works B.Box of Brother and Sister, 108 Heroes Tales from the Water Margin and Metamorphosis.

His major stage design works include Contemporary Legend Theatre’s Yin Yang River, Infinite Country, Medea, Oresteia, King Lear and Run! 燈光設計 黃祖延

黃祖延畢業於中國文化大學戲劇 系影劇組,曾為台北藝術節、台 北國際舞蹈季、宜蘭國際童玩藝 術節和台北詩歌節系列擔任技術 總監及舞台監督等技術統籌工 作。

他的燈光設計作品包括舞蹈 空間舞團《在邊界前後左右》; 創作社《天亮之前我要你》、《孽 子》;當代傳奇劇場《暴風雨》、 《樓蘭女》等。

Lighting Designer Wong Choo-yean

Wong Choo-yean graduated from the Cinema and Drama Section of the Department of Theatre Arts at the Chinese Culture University. He has served as technical director and stage manager for a series of performances at the Taipei Arts Festival, Taipei International Dance Season, the Yilan International Children’s Folklore and Folkgame Festival, and the Taipei Poetry Festival.

Wong's lighting design works include Around the Border (Dance Forum Taipei); I Want You Before Sunrise, Crystal Boys (Creative Society); The Tempest and Medea (Contemporary Legend Theatre).

劉育樹是台灣3D動畫電視、電 影製作導演,以獨特的美術風 格、創新的視覺影像特效著稱, 擁有逾十八年動畫經驗,曾入 圍第51屆及52屆金鐘獎動畫導 演。作品涵蓋電影、電視劇、紀 錄片、廣告、動畫製作、新媒體 藝術等,更創作了全世界第一個 3D/VR數碼歌舞劇作品,並積 極與國際團體及藝術創作者交流 合作,亦致力於學術交流活動和 跨界合作。

Liu Yu-shu

A Taiwan director of 3D animation production for TV shows and films, Liu Yu-shu is renowned for his unique art style, and innovative visual and special effects. He was nominated as Best Animation Director at the 51st and 52nd Golden Bell Awards. With 18 years of experience in animation, Liu has created the world’s first 3D/VR digital production of a dance-musical. He also works with various international companies and art creators, and is committed to academic exchange activities.
