Now in its 46th year, the Hong Kong Arts Festival continues to contribute to the cultural life of Hong Kong, delighting audiences from near and far. This year, the Festival puts on a wide variety of performances that showcase a mix of classic and contemporary genres, spotlighting Hong Kong’s rich and diverse cultural landscape. Featuring some 130 performances in a packed month of music, dance, theatre, opera and more, the Festival has much to offer to arts lovers of all kinds. Alongside dazzling performances by an array of local and international artists, the Festival continues to place great emphasis on its outreach activities. To develop youngsters’ appreciation of the arts, the Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival offers local students the opportunity to enjoy the Festival’s performances and participate in multi-arts activities. Similarly, the PLUS programme gives audiences an inspirational glimpse into the creative process behind the core Festival performances through a combination of workshops, backstage tours and masterclasses. The Government is committed to promoting the development of arts and culture in the city, and we are blessed to have the support of devoted sponsors and donors who join us in making the Hong Kong Arts Festival an international success. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts Festival In, Of and For Hong Kong

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year.

HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding for the Festival in 2018 represents roughly 14% of its HK$125 million budget. Around 32% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and another 36% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 18% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include A Floating Family, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 26 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 730,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

Cécile McLorin Salvant Cécile McLorin Salvant grew up in a bilingual household in Miami, the child of a French mother and Haitian father. She started piano studies at the age of five, and at eight began singing with the Miami Choral Society. After graduating from Coral Reef Senior High School, McLorin Salvant decided to pursue her education in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France, where troubadours invented the Western love song almost 1,000 years ago. In this unlikely setting, McLorin Salvant embarked on a new career as a jazz performer, while pursuing a degree in French law and training as a classical and baroque singer. Three years later, McLorin Salvant returned to the US as a semifinalist in the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. She had entered the contest at the urging of her mother, but almost missed the submission deadline. “On the last day, I mailed the audition recording with an apology for not getting it in sooner”, she recalls. Then the call came inviting her to Washington D.C. for the contest. Here an illustrious panel of judges – Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves, Kurt Elling, Patti Austin and Al Jarreau – took note of McLorin Salvant’s remarkable voice and striking ability to inhabit the emotional space of every song she heard and turn it into a compelling personal statement. This surprise contender, the unheralded American jazz singer from France, took the top spot in the jazz world’s most demanding competition. “She brought down the house”, The Washington Post told its readers the next day. Less than three years after first performing with a jazz band, writer Anne Midgette noted, McLorin Salvant was already singing “like a seasoned pro. Her marathon is just beginning.”

Others were now taking notice. “She has poise, elegance, soul, humour, sensuality, power, virtuosity, range, insight, intelligence, depth and grace”, announced Wynton Marsalis. “If anyone can extend the lineage of the Big Three – Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald – it is this 23 year old virtuoso”, added Stephen Holden in the New York Times. The release of her album WomanChild both backed up these claims and introduced McLorin Salvant’s music to a host of new listeners. Her third album, For One To Love, won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2016. Two years later, her fourth album, Dreams and Daggers, won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. The up-and-coming vocalist was now a legitimate jazz star. In more recent times, McLorin Salvant’s work has moved beyond the jazz world and entered into broader culture. You can hear it on commercials for Chanel, or in the soundtrack for the HBO show Bessie. But this crossover success has come without compromise. As critic Nate Chinen aptly notes, “whatever else you might say about her”, McLorin Salvant sounds “clearly, unmistakably like a jazz singer.”

Cécile McLorin Salvant: True Character Relaxing in her Harlem apartment at dusk on a late June day, Cécile McLorin Salvant, dressed casually and wearing her signature eyeglasses, evinced an easy awareness of her deepening conception and how it was reflected in the steady progress she had made toward harnessing her gift. “It comes with getting older,” she said, “knowing the process more, being less afraid.” As she put it, her first album for Mack Avenue and her United States debut, 2013’s WomanChild –which, as the title suggests, addresses the contradictions inherent in reconciling an adult mindset with the childlike sensibility necessary for artistic creation – was well received. Her follow-up album, 2015’s For One To Love, gave her more control and earned the Grammy for Best Vocal Jazz Album. It was, she said, “an album of all the songs I wanted to sing.” Among them were five originals and, notably, the Burt Bacharach-Hal David relic from the Mad Men era, “Wives And Lovers.” The inclusion of that tune constituted a risk; many listeners find its lyrics demeaning to women, and few artists have tackled it in recent years. Her rendition acknowledges the tune’s musicality, even as it critiques its social content. And as her treatment of it has ripened, it has become of a piece with her work generally in the addressing of social issues in popular song. That work has reached a new level of ambition with her latest Mack Avenue album, Dreams And Daggers. The album encompasses an impressive 23 tracks, divided between standards and originals intended as commentary on them. The standards were recorded over three nights at New York’s Village Vanguard with her working trio – Aaron Diehl on piano, Paul Sikivie on bass and Lawrence Leathers on drums. The album, she said, grew out of a longstanding desire to record a group of standards live. “I hate overdubbing, I hate editing, I hate any kind of
studio magic, so it had to be live,” she said. “And I wanted us to be in a place where we’d have to record the thing through and it would have to be what it was. This was a decision made long ago.” For all her love of unadulterated live recording, she was not content to leave it at that. Recalling with relish a concert she and her trio had performed with the Catalyst Quartet at Jazz at Lincoln Center in February, she was looking to integrate strings into the album. By juxtaposing the relative sterility of the strings in the studio against the grittier ambience of the club, the album paints a holistic sonic picture – one that mirrors the complexity of human emotion in all its dimensions. The effect is achieved through a sequencing of tunes in which, in most instances, a song with strings follows or precedes a standard that’s linked to it. One of the most effective pairings is that of a Bessie Smith song, “Sam Jones’ Blues”, and Salvant’s composition “More”. Smith has been a favourite of Salvant’s since she attended the Darius Milhaud Conservatory in Aix-en-Provence, France. “I became really, really, really, really enamoured of her music about 10 years ago when I was just starting to sing jazz,” she said. “I listened to every single recording of her constantly for months, all day, all the time. I know I always want to sing one or two or three of her songs when I’m doing something.” While Salvant’s song choices are not always autobiographical in all the particulars, they must in some way draw on her experience: “Otherwise I can’t do them. I can try to get into a character but there always has to be a piece of me in a song. It’s coming from getting through some pain, getting through some body-image issues, some selfconfidence issues, which unfortunately I’m not alone in dealing with. It’s the world we’re in. It’s what we have to deal with as women.”

Salvant, a onetime student of political science and law, said that her willingness to push the envelope dates to her upbringing in Miami, where, raised by a French mother who is a teacher and Haitian father who is a doctor, she was urged to question societal roles. Hers was a matriarchal household led by funny, hard-headed women on both sides of the family. “I talked about identity and storytelling in music: Who tells the stories, with relation to race and gender,” she said. “If you talk about identity and race and American entertainment, the most important thing is to talk about slave songs and black people in blackface and white people in blackface and how all of those dynamics were the foundation of American music and entertainment.” At the lectern or in private conversation, the persuasiveness with which Salvant presents such ideas can be disarming. It was not always so. “There was a point when it was more well-hidden because I was so shy,” she said. “But I’ve always been a very dramatic person.”
“I wanted to be an actress – I still want to be an actress,” she said. “That is one of my strongest desires. Singing is an excuse – a way for me to act.” More generally, theatre appeals to her because of its immediacy, which circles back to her penchant for live performance and the draw of projects like Dreams And Daggers. “I like this whole documentarian type of recording,” she said. “I don’t believe in putting out the best version of what you could put out. I believe in putting out the version of what it was when it happened.” In an age when every musical micro-fragment is subject to digital manipulation, Salvant’s willingness to accept performance flaws makes her a rebel: “That apparently is a very lonely position to be in when you’re recording. People want everything to be the best that it was – the musicians want that, the producers want that. I don’t want that. It’s already not going to be perfect; it’s already not going to be what I want. It’s never going to be what I envisioned in my head.” “I feel like once the song is gone, it’s gone. Seven questions with Cécile McLorin Salvant How did you get into jazz? I first heard and loved jazz thanks to my mother. I wanted to sing classical music though. When I moved to France after high school, I met a jazz teacher at the music school I wanted to go to, and he encouraged me to pursue it. Who are your biggest inspirations? Louise Bourgeois, Colette, Nathalie du Pasquier, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Marisol, Barbara, Mercedes Sosa, Bessie Smith, Patricia Lockwood, Anne Sexton, James Blake. In an age of auto-tuning, how does jazz remain relevant? I am not interested in the idea of relevance. I think concern with contemporary relevance can be a pitfall in any kind of creative endeavor. It’s like caring if something is trendy. Unless you consider the word “relevance” as a connection between ideas. I am interested in the idea of presence. I want to communicate across time, through time, play with time, rather than thinking of it in such a way as “that was then and this is now.” You create all your own album artwork – have you always been so creative/multi-talented? I feel in a lot of ways like I never lost that sort of shameless searching a child has. I enjoy drawing without a real purpose, and testing things out. I also love making my albums a very personal experience, inside and out.
When did you first realize you wanted to become a jazz singer? I don’t think there was a big realisation moment. I was just singing, doing concerts, and it sort of kept going naturally from there. How hard has it been to get your name out there, to create a fan base? I haven’t put an enormous amount of effort in getting my name out there. The effort has been in the content of the music, in my singing, in understanding the history of the music. In that way I have been lucky, because I didn’t focus energies outward. I tried to make sure I was developing as a musician without sacrificing time on things I didn’t understand like popularity, branding, and my name. I feel so grateful for that because I know that is not the case for everyone. How did the Grammy Award change your life and career? I’m not sure! Getting the Grammy was a beautiful moment shared with my family and my band. We got this mainstream validation for a record that had not been influenced by the penchants of the music industry. This is to say, we made exactly the album we really wanted to, without any compromises to placate a label, or to attempt to become more popular. For this I am grateful, and feel encouraged to keep developing the content of my music. To not focus on my “brand” or lack thereof. I can continue being “anti-brand” and “pro-content”! Kyle Poole Drums Hailed by Jazz Speaks as a "young prodigious drummer", Los Angeles native Kyle Poole has been resident in New York City since 2011 and continues to impress wherever his drums take him. Selected as a semi-finalist at the 2012 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Competition, Poole has performed in New York's most esteemed jazz clubs, notably Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola and SMOKE Jazz, culminating in a weekly residency at Small's Jazz Club lasting nearly three years. Paul Sikivie Bass Paul Sikivie moved to New York City in 2007 from Florida, seeking training from the masters of America’s musical art, jazz. His search took him through the classroom and onto stages across the city and world. Sikivie has enjoyed and benefited from playing with some great musicians: Matt Wilson, Ted Nash, Johnny O’Neal, Frank Kimbrough, Benny Green, Wycliffe Gordon, Chico Hamilton, Wes Anderson, Aaron Diehl, and a host of others. He received a M.M. from Juilliard in 2009, having completed his B.M. at the University of North Florida in 2006.
