衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年邁向第4 7屆。今屆藝 術節陣容鼎盛,共有超過1700名來自香港和世 界各地的藝術家傾力演出,為觀眾帶來近1 7 0 場精彩表演。 今年藝術節的節目多姿多彩,當代及古典音 樂、舞蹈、戲劇等不同形式的藝術表演共冶一 爐。每個節目從幕後製作到台前演出,均盡顯 精湛的藝術造詣和超凡的想像力。 我很高興知道最近完成活化的中區警署建築 群,即現在的大館古蹟及藝術館,會在兩個周 末呈獻約5 0場舞蹈表演,供公眾免費入場觀 賞。大家更有機會一起參與在大館的檢閱廣 場、監獄操場,甚至是監獄囚室進行的表演節 目。牛棚藝術村亦會打造為藝術共生創造社, 首度成為藝術節發展作品的平台,場內設有不 同創意領域的工作坊,觀眾並可以欣賞一些創 作中的作品,感受藝術家的多元創意。 除了精彩表演,藝術節亦一如以往,悉心籌備 各項教育和外展活動,致力培育本地藝術人 才。「香港藝術節青少年之友」計劃讓本地學 生有機會觀賞世界級的表演和參與各式各樣的 藝術活動。此外,藝術節亦透過後台參觀和大 師班等「加料節目」,讓觀眾與國際頂尖藝術 家互動接觸,了解節目的幕後製作過程。 衷心感謝香港藝術節團隊一直致力推動本港的 藝術發展,成績斐然。我亦感謝贊助商和捐款 者的大力支持,令每年的藝術節圓滿成功,大 獲好評。 謹祝二零一九年香港藝術節所有觀眾、參加者 和表演者可以盡情享受這次藝術之旅,留下愉 快難忘的回憶。

I am pleased to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival, which turns 47 this year in grand fashion, with nearly 170 performances featuring more than 1,700 artists from Hong Kong and all over the world. This year, the Festival showcases a dazzling range of classic and contemporary music, dance, theatre and more, each produced, staged and performed with consummate artistry and imagination. I am also delighted to note that our newly revitalised Central Police Station Compound, now Tai Kwun, Centre for Heritage and Arts, is the venue for some 50 free dance performances over the course of two weekends. I am told that audiences will also have the opportunity to participate in the performances taking place at Tai Kwun’s Parade Ground, Prison Yard and even its prison cell blocks. For the first time, the Arts Festival will turn Cattle Depot Artist Village into a Creative Hub for showcasing workshops and works in progress from a variety of creative disciplines. Beyond its captivating performances, the Festival remains committed to its educational activities, outreach and development of local artists. The Young Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival enables local students to enjoy world-class performances and participate in a range of arts activities, while PLUS programmes bring audiences behind the scenes with some of the world’s greatest artists through backstage tours, masterclasses and more. I am grateful to the Hong Kong Arts Festival team for its continuing commitment and manifold contributions to the development of the arts in Hong Kong. I am grateful, too, to the many sponsors and donors who, each year, help make the Festival a resounding success. Not only do we spotlight exhilarating programmes at stages old and new across Hong Kong, but also reflect on the stage as a process of transformation. Leading artists at the peak of their careers perform alongside the next generation of rising stars. Classic repertoire is reinvented through brave homages and boldly experimental retellings, and the original designs, technologies and storytelling modes of new works crash through the boundaries of the traditional stage. I hope that this and many other performances at the 47th HKAF will provoke, inspire and delight you, and that in the course of viewing works at every stage, we may continue to envision the myriad possibilities of the arts. Hong Kong Arts Festival A Major International Arts FestivaI ln, Of and For Hong Kong HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Secured government baseline funding represents about 13% of the 2019 Festival’s HK$136 million budget, with another nearly 6% specially provided by the Government as time-limited additional funding for five years. Around 28% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and over 33% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals, and charitable foundations. It is anticipated that the remaining 20% will come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations. • Large-scale special events: World of WearableArt, Zingaro • Outdoor events: Power Plant, Super Pool, Chorus HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include the Cantonese Opera - Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family–A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Chinese Lesson, Danz Up, Datong–The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs, Blast, Wild Boar and Murder in San Jose, to name a few. HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera. HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 27 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 750,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year. HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

The first work of Cursive: A Trilogy, this dance revolves around Wang Xizhi’s Eight Principles of Yong, revealing the delights of Chinese calligraphy. It was regarded as “the glory of beauty” by The New York Times, and selected by European dance critics as the “Best Dance of 2006”. The second chapter of Cursive: A Trilogy was inspired by traditional ink produced with the soot of burning pine logs. It renders the spirit of the five shades of ink strokes against an empty background, and was awarded the Age Critics’ Award and the Patrons’ Choice Award at the Melbourne International Arts Festival. 一 ) 一九四七年三月十二,爸爸被五個便衣帶 走。媽媽已經無法活在這個世間,她的精 神都已經隨爸爸去了。

1. March 12, 1947. Father was taken away by five plainclothes policemen. Mother lost her will to live. Her spirit went away with father. We took her to a hospital. Out of religious faith, mother decided to live on, but under one condition: all of father’s belongings had to be burnt. Nothing was to be left. She couldn’t bear looking at them.

2. Oh yes, more than 10 people were killed here. Ah-Yuan, owner of the bicycle shop...they rushed in and shot him from behind. Then KayGuay, more than 50 years old, living upstairs; they called him down and chopped his foot off. Recalling those moments, my heart breaks.

見識過幾回雲門舞者在排練場的上課與工 作狀態,於是隨手畫記了一些從林懷民老 師口中噴出的單字,其中最常出現的,不 外:「安靜」、「下沉」、「扎根」、「纏 絲」、「沒有腰」、「呼吸」、「湧泉」、 「放鬆」。 當時畫記下那些,只覺趣味,像是抓取一位 好友口頭禪的不經意,與舞者閒聊談話後, 才發現那些個單字像是一片片拼圖,拼構而 出的畫面,就是所謂雲門身體,所謂雲門

45的舞台風景。 七十年代雲門初創,為了「跳自己的舞」, 林懷民延請復興劇校的曹駿麟先生指導舞者 國劇基本動作,催生了《奇冤報》、《白蛇 傳》、《薪傳》這些跳脫西方現代舞和民族 舞蹈巢臼的傑作。 九十年代,雲門復出後,希望深掘傳統肢體 美學的根源,林懷民邀請熊衛與徐紀兩位先 生指導舞者。導引是歷史久遠的健身術,熊 衛先生融入太極的元素,發展出太極導引, 講究吐納、導氣與纏絲般的螺旋式動作。徐 紀先生出自劉雲樵大師門下,是當代武學名 師。邀請之時兩位老師都推說他們不懂舞 蹈,不知如何指導雲門舞者。 林懷民說,他知道功夫需要時間的淬鍊,請 老師為舞者啟蒙,為他們打基礎,不必著眼 於套路。他希望能夠用受過傳統訓練的身體 來進行編舞。於是雲門舞者在芭蕾、現代舞 之外,有了太極導引、內家拳的課程。

During a few visits to Cloud Gate’s regular classes and rehearsals, I jotted down some of Lin Hwai-min’s most commonly uttered phrases: tranquil, submerge, take root, entwine, breathe, spring, relax. These notes were intended merely as a pleasant way of passing the time—like registering a good friend’s catchphrase in passing—but chatting with the dancers later, I realized that those phrases were like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle: when placed together, the picture they formed was the “body” of Cloud Gate, a picturesque snapshot of the company at 45 years old. When Cloud Gate was first formed in the 1970s, Lin took it upon himself to “dance his own dance” and invited Tsao Chun-lin from the National Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy [now the National Taiwan College of Performing Arts] to instruct dancers on the fundamentals of Chinese opera. Tsao’s training gave birth to masterpieces like Revenge of a Lonely Ghost, The Tale of White Serpent, and Legacy, which broke free of the conventions of modern and folk dance. When Cloud Gate revived itself in the 1990s, Lin hoped to dig into the roots of traditional body aesthetics. To that end, he invited Hsiung Wei and Adam Chi Hsu to instruct his dancers in the ancient physical arts. Hsiung integrated elements of Tai Chi into a practice called, Tai Chi Dao Yin, which stressed rhythmic breathing, the channeling of qi (energy) and spiraling body movements. Hsu, a disciple of Grandmaster Liu Yun-qiao, was himself a renowned martial arts master. At the time of invitation, both Hsu and Hsiung insisted that they didn’t understand dance and would have no idea how to instruct Cloud Gate dancers. Lin understood that kung fu requires the tempering of time, but still appealed to the instructors to provide rudimentary martial arts instruction to his dancers, because the choreography he had in mind required bodies adapted to traditional training. Thus, in addition to ballet and modern dance training, Cloud Gate dancers received instruction in Tai Chi Dao Yin and internal martial arts.

I asked the dancers to recall their impressions upon first entering the company of these Eastern training practices. They recounted half-hour-long zhanzhuang (“standing like a post”) exercises, hour-long meditation sessions, and periods of simply standing still while using the mind to guide the circulation of qi.

“My thighs ached so much that I couldn’t walk, like they were going to explode!” says one. “I meditated until my legs went numb,” adds another. “I had to breathe out for so long, it felt like I was suffocating,” proclaims one dancer. “In the beginning, I didn’t know where my dantian (elixir field) was; I could only guess and try my best to perceive it,” another recalls. As each dancer explains his or her personal experiences, others nod in fierce agreement. Prior to entering the company, none of the dancers had undergone this sort of training; a sense of bewilderment at doing Tai Chi Dao Yin was a common experience. The performances of Cloud Gate dancers onstage may indeed be exceptional, but they, in fact, began with ordinary bodies like the rest of us. “Three years, about three years for me,” says one dancer, while another chimes in, “You need two, three years, really.” By this, they mean the amount of time generally acknowledged as necessary to allow new recruits’ bodies to

It was tough in the beginning for Huang Li-chieh, who joined the company four years ago. “But seeing more experienced dancers that were able to practise like this every day—who had reached that level,” he says, “I thought that I should be able to do it too.”

林懷民的舞蹈江湖一點訣:靜 沉穩安靜,專注堅定,是雲門舞者另一項 「特長」,排練場、舞台邊上,隨時可見閉 目穩當坐着的舞者,那是一方靜好的畫面。

亂時,就坐下,觀照那一天那當下的身體, 也重新養起能量,身體會感覺比較不累。 很難忘懷周章佞在《行草》中舞出「永字」 的身形,那是雲門舞作中最著名的畫面, 那也是雲門舞者身體的另一奧義所在。原 來,伴隨着傳統肢體訓練,林懷民也邀請黃 緯中老師指導舞者寫毛筆字,他體認到書法 和氣功、內家拳擁有相似的美學,都要求身 心的「鬆」,像書法的筆觸和動作的纏絲相 同,都是連環的迴轉;跳舞的精力要綿延不 斷,如同寫字要「筆斷意連」;「筆陣圖」 要求落筆的點要「高峰墜石,磕磕然實如崩 也」,正是陡然下沉動作的寫照。這些舞者 於是把書法的心得注入動作裏,外出巡演, 筆墨紙硯隨身,獨身書寫靜心,三五成群相 約練字也是種特別的娛興。 就是跟別人不一樣 林懷民借用傳統動作的原則,繼之交融東西 方概念去發展成全新的舞蹈動作語彙。黃立 捷自信地說:「我們的訓練,當然就有我們 的方式跟樣子,林老師這樣的編舞家,夠屌 了,能找出這樣動身體的方式。換個角度 想,這是東方的身體元素,跟別人完全不一 樣。」 對雲門舞者來說,每一支舞,都有一種獨特 的「狀態」,一種「性格」,身體、意念要 拿出去應對的部分都不同,因此在不同舞作 的排練與演出切換中,就是舞者一次次對自

Calm silence, focused stability—this tranquil composure is another strength of Cloud Gate dancers. Whether in the rehearsal studio or onstage, dancers are able to close their eyes and recede into meditative silence at will, painting a serene picture. Rehearsal Director Chou Chang-ning shares that mediation is not only a habit, but also a means of nourishing the spirit: when you want to pull away from the exhausting energies that surround you, you need only sit down and turn your attention to your body at that moment, and your energy will be replenished and the body refreshed. Chou’s formation of the shape of the character “永 ” (yong, meaning “eternal”) with her body in Cursive—one of the most well-known and unforgettable images from a Cloud Gate work—presents another enigma of the Cloud Gate dancer’s body. Apparently, as dancers were training in traditional martial arts, Lin also invited Huang Wei-chung to instruct Cloud Gate dancers in Chinese calligraphy. Lin realised that calligraphy had similar aesthetics to qi gong and internal martial arts: each practice required the body to remain “loose”, and the brushstrokes of calligraphy and the spiraling movements of qi gong belonged to the same world of rotations. Just as the energy of dance must stretch unbroken, when putting the brush to the page, each stroke of the character must follow the mind’s intent. Wei Shuo’s Battle Array of the Brush states that the marks of a calligraphy brush must “descend like a rock pit-pattering down the side of a high peak”; this is an apt metaphor for the abrupt sinking motions that Cloud Gate dancers integrate into their movements. While on tour, they often take their calligraphy tools (brush ink, parchment and ink stone) with them, either practicing in solitude to calm the mind or in groups of three to five as a form of entertainment.

Huang Lichieh asserts: “Our training surely has its own method and appearance, but only a choreographer as cool as Lin Hwai-min can discover these types of movements. To put it differently, it’s something uniquely Oriental.”

For Cloud Gate dancers, each dance work has its own “state of mind” and “personality”. The aspects that the body and mind must respond to vary widely in each dance, and because of this, each time the dancers switch between rehearsing or performing different works, they must re-calibrate their frequencies. Unlike many choreographers, Lin prefers “older dancers” because they are “worldly” and “durable”. At Cloud Gate, there are many dancers with more than ten years’ dance experience, a trait extremely rare in modern dance companies, due to the heavy wear and tear of daily body work on the average dancer—a dancer over 30 is typically considered on the decline.

While in Italy this year, for instance, some went to the Ferrari Museum; while in Barcelona, some wandered around classical architecture, like Gaudi’s Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló; in later stops, the Louvre and the British Museum were the sites of multiple return visits.

Aging has had its effect on Lin indeed, as the candid and fierce language of his youth recedes into more genial, descriptive language with a certain old-school literary flavor. These days, when dealing with the company’s majority of younger dancers, he uses phrases like “soaked bun” and “egg drop soup” for scolding careless and sloppy dance movements, or “u-laylay” (Taiwanese dialect) for movements that are over-extended, too wild or too unrestrained. A life pursuit Lin Hwai-min’s work and training methods have given dancers more than just a physical practice, but a life’s pursuit. It is a pursuit that is concerned with speaking and communicating with oneself—a process of reconciliation. Having repeated the same movements year after year, one dancer says: “A process occurs, in which the body and the mind gradually simplify themselves. The performance is no longer for other people; it is a conversation between oneself and the movement, for one’s own enjoyment.” Taking the spotlight in solo appearances onstage, veteran dancers have reversed their fear and nervousness into calm and enjoyment: “When you’re onstage, you close off outside sensations and calm the mind, and become aware of every detail of your body. Even if there were no music, even if you were in the dark, you’d still know when and where to release, because you are speaking with yourself; you have become your own partner.” Looking back, the words of reminder most often hanging from Lin’s lips—tranquil, submerge, take root, entwine, breathe, spring, relax—are no longer simply the maxims of training and performance; they have become a part of the dancers’ bodies, encoded into their flesh as if DNA. The path of the Cloud Gate dancer, in the end, is a lifelong journey of personal growth. Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China. In 1973, choreographer Lin Hwaimin adopted this classical name for the first contemporary dance company in any Chinese speaking community. Its 24 dancers receive trainings of meditation, qi gong, internal martial arts, modern dance, ballet, and calligraphy. Through Lin’s choreographies, the company transforms ancient aesthetics into a thrilling, modern celebration of motion. Cloud Gate has toured extensively with frequent engagements at the Next Wave Festival in New York, the Sadler's Wells Theatre and Barbican Centre in London, the Moscow Chekhov International Theatre Festival, and the Internationales Tanzfest NRW directed by Pina Bausch, winning acclaim from major critics: Asia’s leading contemporary dance theatre. No company in the world dances like Cloud Gate. It presents a distinct and mature Chinese choreographic language. The importance of this evolution in Asian dance is no less profound than the impact of Forsythe’s Ballett Frankfurt on European classical ballet. Dance Europe When you're talking about Cloud Gate, magic is not too strong a word. Time Out At home, Cloud Gate enjoys high acclaim and popularity. In addition to its regular seasons in theatres, the company stages annual free outdoor performances in various cities in Taiwan, drawing audiences of up to 30,000 per performance. To perform for grass-roots communities, and to foster the development of young choreographers in Taiwan, Cloud Gate 2 was founded in 1999. In 1998, Cloud Gate Dance School was founded to bring the joy of dance to students, aged 4–84. In 2003, in recognition of Cloud Gate’s contribution to the cultural life of Taipei, the Taipei City Government named Fu-Hsing North Road Lane 231, home of Cloud Gate’s office, as “Cloud Gate Lane”. In 2010, a new asteroid, discovered by the Central University, Taiwan, was named after Cloud Gate. In 2014, Cloud Gate’s dance images were featured on the China Airlines' aircraft livery. Most of Cloud Gate's productions have been made into videos. Among them, Songs of the Wanderers, Moon Water, Bamboo Dream, and Cursive II (now known as Pine Smoke) were filmed in Europe and distributed internationally. In 2013, Lin Hwai-min was honored with the prestigious Samuel H. Scripps / American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement. Previous recipients of the award include Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch. Lin was the first awardee based in Asia. In his homeland, Taiwan, Lin was first known as a critically acclaimed writer. In 1969, at the age of 22, he was awarded a fellowship from the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. He obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Writer’s Workshop of the University in 1972. During his stay in the United States, he also studied modern dance in Iowa City and New York. Lin founded Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in 1973, the Dance Department at the Taipei University of the Arts in 1983, and Cloud Gate 2 in 1999. Lin often draws his inspiration from traditional Asian culture and aesthetics to create original works with contemporary resonance, which has led Dance Europe to acclaim: “No company in the world dances like Cloud Gate. From 2000 to 2014, he served as the artistic director of the Novel Dance Series for the Novel Hall for Performing Arts, Taipei, introducing contemporary dance to audiences in Taiwan. From 2012 to 2013, he was a dance mentor for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative. In 2017, on the eve of the premiere of his 90th work, Formosa, Lin Hwai-min announced that he would step down from the position of artistic director of the company in 2019. Cheng Tsunglung, the present artistic director of Cloud Gate 2, will take the reins of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan.

Lee Ching-chun holds a Master of Arts in Dance Studies from Laban Centre, City University, London (now known as Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance). In 2004, she received the National Award for the Arts from the Taiwan National Culture and Arts Foundation, the highest award for artists in Taiwan. A Cloud Gate member since 1983, Lee has taken leading roles in many of Lin Hwai-min’s works. As Associate Artistic Director since 2003, Lee represented Lin to re-stage his works Smoke and White for the Zurich Ballet in Switzerland and Introdans in the Netherlands, respectively, in 2004 and 2005. Her choreographic works include Woman and Man, Man and Woman for Cloud Gate and While White Is Revealing for Spotlight Dance Company. In 1999, collaborating with Canadian stage designer Tania Étienne, she choreographed and performed the solo dance work Courtyard of Pearls. In 2006, she choreographed Blossom and Moonlight for Kaohsiung City Ballet Company.

Huang Mei-ya Dancer 台南人。五歲起習舞,國小至高中都念舞蹈班,2003 年考入國立臺北藝術大學舞蹈系。 2007 年畢業後加入雲門。 重要演出包括:《水月》的獨舞、《白水》的獨舞及《關於島嶼》──與周辰燁在蔣 勳朗誦的口白裏,柔情舞出楊牧的「水田地帶」。其他演出包括:《微塵》、《稻禾》、 《花語》、《九歌》、《竹夢》及《流浪者之歌》等。 Huang Mei-ya joined Cloud Gate upon her graduation from the Department of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts in 2007. Huang’s roles in Lin Hwai-min’s works include solos in Moon Water and White Water, a duet in Formosa, and roles in Dust, Rice, Whisper of Flowers, Wind Shadow, White, Cursive: A Trilogy, Nine Songs, Bamboo Dream, Songs of the Wanderers and Legacy. Tsai Ming-yuan Rehearsal Director/Dancer 嘉義人。嘉義女中舞蹈實驗班第一位男學生,畢業後入讀藝術學院舞蹈系。1 9 9 9 年 加入雲門 2,2001 年轉入雲門舞集,2015 年起兼任雲門排練指導。 參與雲門眾多作品,包括:《紅樓夢》、《九歌》的〈山鬼〉、《關於島嶼》的〈麗 字〉及《屋漏痕》及《水月》的獨舞演出。亦經常與黃珮華攜手演出雙人舞,在《水 月》及《稻禾》中〈花粉雙人舞〉的演出大受好評。 A graduate from the Dance Department, National Institute of the Arts, Taiwan in 2001, Tsai Ming-yuan joined Cloud Gate 2 in 1999 and was promoted to Cloud Gate in June 2001. Tsai’s roles in Lin Hwai-min’s works include: solos in Formosa, Nine Songs, The Tale of the White Serpent, The Dream of the Red Chamber and The Road to the Mountain; the solo and duet in Moon Water; the duets in Rice, Whisper of Flowers, Wind Shadow, Wild Cursive, and Cursive, the trio in Pine Smoke and Bamboo Dream; and roles in White Water, Dust, Burning the Juniper Branches and Songs of the Wanderers. Prior to his career with Cloud Gate 2 and Cloud Gate, Tsai was invited to the Singapore Institute of Practical Arts to serve as an instructor and choreographer. His choreographic works include Don’t Be Late, No Score and Thoughts on a Quiet Evening.

Ko Wan-chun Dancer 台北人。幼時因多病被送去學舞入讀國立臺北藝術大學舞蹈系。2 0 0 4 年入選「雲門 種籽舞者」。2005 年,自舞蹈系畢業後加入雲門。 在《如果沒有你》中,以一襲紫色長裙舞動張震嶽〈愛欲浮世繪〉。近年挑戰雲門女 舞者的重頭戲,演出《九歌》的女巫,《水月》與《流浪者之歌》的獨舞,在莫斯科、 倫敦、美國各城演出。於《關於島嶼》裏,以舞姿引出滿台字林,表現恐懼迷狂的感 覺。 Ko Wan-chun was selected as one of Cloud Gate’s “Seed Dancers”, a training program for potential Cloud Gate dancers, in 2004 while at school, and joined Cloud Gate upon her graduation from the Department of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts in 2005. Ko’s roles in Lin Hwai-min’s works include Formosa, White Water, Dust, Rice, How Can I Live On Without You, Whisper of Flowers, Nine Songs, Wind Shadow, White, Cursive: A Trilogy, Songs of the Wanderers and The Dream of the Red Chamber.

Yang I-chun Rehearsal Assistant/Dancer 台南人。小學四年級起習舞。19 9 3 年自藝術學院舞蹈系畢業,同年加入雲門。2 0 0 7 年起,兼任雲門排練助理。 重要角色包括:《陳映真.風景》的蔡千惠、《家族合唱》裏輓悼父母親的白衣女子、 《流浪者之歌》領銜出場的朝聖人、《稻禾》的〈泥土〉中領導女性舞者、引水入田 的領銜角色。 Yang I-chun joined Cloud Gate upon her graduation from the Dance Department, National Institute of the Arts, Taiwan in 1993. Yang’s roles in Lin Hwai-min’s works include: solos in Portrait of the Families and Cursive; the quartet in Pine Smoke and Moon Water; the Maiden in Blue in The Dream of the Red Chamber; and roles in Formosa, Dust, Rice, Wind Shadow, White, Wild Cursive, Bamboo Dream, Songs of the Wanderers and Nine Songs. Other performance credits include roles in The Rite of Spring, Invisible Cities, Insomnia and La Vie en Rose by Helen Lai, as well as Nine Person Precision Ball Passing by Charles Moulton.

Su I-ping Dancer 台中人。六歲起習舞。2000 年自藝術學院舞蹈系畢業,隔年加入雲門 2,2 0 0 2 年轉 入雲門舞集。 重要演出包括:以慢動作獨舞為《屋漏痕》破題,復以激昂舞姿強化《微塵》的悲愴 主題;於《水月》演出慢板與快板兩支雙人舞;於《如果沒有你》張惠妹〈愛或不愛〉 的歌聲裏演出臥房內的衝突,內斂而奔放。她也和蔡銘元攜手領導《關於島嶼》中的 六對雙人舞。 Su I-ping graduated from the Dance Department, National Institute of the Arts, Taiwan in 2000. Hou Tang-li Dancer 生於高雄,台中長大。國小起學習芭蕾。2 0 0 5 年畢業於國立臺北藝術大學舞蹈系, 2007 年加入雲門。 重要演出包括:《關於島嶼》中,與范家瑄演出動作如一的雙人舞、《水月》的快板 雙人舞、《如果沒有你》裏伴着盧廣仲〈OH YEAH !〉周旋於兩位女子的嘻笑之作、 《白水》的獨舞與男子雙人舞及《九歌》的〈山鬼〉。 After graduating from the Dance Department, National Taipei University of the Arts in 2005, Hou Tang-li joined Cloud Gate in 2007. Chen Mu-han Dancer 宜蘭人,南澳長大。有四分之一泰雅族血統,所以也有了娜莎.尤芭的名字。國立臺 北藝術大學畢業後,2010 年加入雲門。重要演出包括:於《流浪者之歌》的〈跋涉 II〉中高踞舞伴肩上,形象高貴;在《水月》中快板雙人舞的迅捷舞動。於《關於島嶼》 裏,擔綱開場的第一個獨舞,其後演出雙人舞,展露彪悍勢態。 Chen Mu-han is from Yilan, Taiwan. A remote descendant of the Taiwanese Atayal tribe, Chen is also named Nyasal Yuba. She joined Cloud Gate in 2010 after graduating from the Taipei National University of Arts. Her highlighted performances include: the solo in Formosa and roles in Songs of the Wanderers, Moon Water, How Can I Live On Without You, Rice and Pine Smoke.

王立翔 舞者

Wong Lap-cheong Dancer 澳門人。自幼熱愛舞蹈。畢業於香港演藝學院舞蹈學院,主修中國舞,曾參與香港舞 蹈團出演《慾.望.西.九》及《梁祝.傳說》。2004 年加入雲門。重要演出包括: 於《稻禾》的〈日光〉中演出男子雙人舞與六人舞;於《狂草》演出開段及三人舞; 於《如果沒有你》中隨着周杰倫〈不能說的秘密〉演出獨舞。於雲門其他演出包括: 《關於島嶼》、《白》及《紅樓夢》等。 Wong Lap-cheong is a 2003 graduate from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, where he received a full scholarship and toured with productions of Rite of Spring and Cycle Song. Wong joined Cloud Gate in 2004; his roles in Lin Hwai-min’s works include: the solo in How Can I Live On Without You; the duets in Nine Songs and The Road to the Mountain; and roles in Formosa, White Water, Dust, Rice, Whisper of Flowers, Wind Shadow, White, Wild Cursive, The Dream of the Red Chamber, Cursive, Pine Smoke, Songs of the Wanderers and Bamboo Dream. Fan Chia-hsuan Dancer 台北人。五歲起習舞。臺北體育學院舞蹈系畢業後,於國立臺北藝術大學舞蹈研究所 進修。2013 年參加 Juste Debout 街舞比賽獲實驗性舞蹈項目台灣冠軍。同年加入雲門。 於《白水》演出輕盈迅捷的獨舞;於《關於島嶼》和侯當立演出動作一致的雙人舞。 其他作品包括《微塵》、《如果沒有你》及《流浪者之歌》。 Fan Chia-hsuan is from Taipei. She graduated from the School of Dance at the Taipei Physical Education College, and further trained in the Graduate Institute of Dance at the Taipei National University of the Arts. She was the Taiwan champion of the street dance competition Juste Debout in experimental category in 2013. She joined Cloud Gate in the same year. Her works with Cloud Gate include: White Water, Formosa, Dust, How Can I Live On Without You and Songs of the Wanderers.

Cheng Hsi-ling Dancer 台北人。三歲隨母親、雲門早期的舞者蘇麗英習舞。2 0 1 3 年,國立臺北藝術大學舞 蹈系畢業後,加入雲門。就讀大學期間的演出包括:林懷民的《薪傳》〈拓荒〉中的 獨舞、瑪莎.葛蘭姆的《光明行》、柯特.尤斯的《綠桌》。2 0 1 1 年獲台灣教育部 獎學金,以交換生身份赴西澳表演藝術學院進修。她曾演出的雲門作品有《白水》、 《微塵》、《稻禾》、《如果沒有你》、《水月》、《流浪者之歌》、《松煙》及《關 於島嶼》。 At age three, Cheng Hsi-ling began learning dance from her mother, a former Cloud Gate dancer. In 2013, she graduated from the Department of Dance at the Taipei National University of the Arts and joined Cloud Gate. Her performances during her studies include roles in: Cloud Gate’s Legacy, Martha Graham’s Acts of Light and Kurt Jooss’s The Green Table. She was a scholarship recipient from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education in 2011, and went for further training at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. The Cloud Gate productions she took part in include White Water, Dust, Rice, How Can I Live On Without You, Moon Water, Songs of the Wanderers, Pine Smoke, and Formosa.

Lin Hsin-fang Dancer 高雄人。高二轉入左營高中舞蹈班,看完《水月》後,決心加入雲門。2 0 0 2 年就讀 國立臺北藝術大學時,考入雲門,後休學當兵。 2007 年再度加入雲門。重要演出包括: 《如果沒有你》中演出任賢齊演唱的〈對面女孩看過來〉獨舞;《流浪者之歌》尾聲 演出尋道人,用二十多分鐘的時間,在滿台稻穀粑出完美的同心圓。 After graduating from the Department of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts, Lin Hsinfang joined Cloud Gate in 2002. Lin has performed in Lin Hwai-min’s Formosa, Dust, Rice, How Can I Live On Without You, Whisper of Flowers, Nine Songs, Wind Shadow, White, Cursive: A Trilogy, Moon Water, Bamboo Dream, Songs of the Wanderers and Legacy. After graduating from the Department of Dance at the Taipei National University of the Arts, Chou Chen-yeh joined Cloud Gate in 2015. During his studies, he took part in Cloud Gate’s Milky Way, Martha Graham’s Acts of Light and Bill T. Jones’s D – MAN in the Waters. His own work was selected for Taiwan’s National Dance Association 2012 Creative Dance Competition, and was invited to perform in the Asia Pacific Dance Festival in Hawaii. Huang Li-chieh Dancer 台北人。八歲起在蘭陽舞蹈團習舞,十四歲成為正式團員。2 0 1 4 年國立臺北藝術大 學舞蹈系畢業後,加入雲門。就讀大學期間曾演出林懷民的《薪傳》、《星宿》、柯 特.尤斯的《綠桌》及布拉瑞揚的《預見》、張曉雄的《春之祭 2012》、黎海寧的《粉 墨登場》等。曾學習巴西卡波拉武術,也取得劍道二段資格。在雲門演出包括:《松煙》 雙人舞,《白水》的男子雙人舞、《微塵》、《稻禾》、《流浪者之歌》及《關於島嶼》。 Huang Li-chieh is from Taipei. He began his dance training at the age of eight in Lan Yang Dance Company, where he officially became a member at age 14. In 2014, he graduated from the Taipei National University of Arts and joined Cloud Gate. While studying in university, he performed in Cloud Gate’s Legacy and Milky Way, Kurt Jooss’s The Green Table and Bulareyaung Pagarlava's Foreseeing, among others. His performances with Cloud Gate include roles in Pine Smoke, White Water, Dust, Rice, Songs of the Wanderers and Formosa. Huang also studies capoeira and kendo.

She also joined an overseas service trip to Guangxi Arts University in 2014 and performed in an exchange programme tour with Indiana University in 2017.

Chen’s work Before the Independence received an award at the "Dancing Across the Earth" Dance Choreography Competition and was invited to perform at the Seoul International Dance Festival.
