MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE

在過去三十年,藝術節的「青少年 之友」計劃共有超過 80 萬名本地中 學及大專學生參加 。藝術節今年更 首度舉辦「藝術 X 科技創作比賽」, 鼓 勵 同 學 善 用 科 技, 進 行 藝 術 創 作,預計會吸引更多年輕朋友參與。

今屆藝術節呈獻多部世界級作品, 當中不少節目均可免費觀賞,例如 捷克布爾諾國家歌劇院震撼人心的 改 編 劇 作 馬 替 奴《希 臘 受 難 曲》、 巴伐利亞班貝格交響樂團在其著名 音 樂 廳 上 演 的 音 樂 會、 巴 伐 利 亞 國 立 歌 劇 院 製 作 的 歌 劇, 以 及 巴 黎 歌 劇 院 芭 蕾 舞 團 的 佳 作。 至 於 收 費 節 目, 焦 點 則 有 比 利 時 劇 團 Ontroerend Goed 創 作 的 互 動 劇 場 《 TM 》、都柏林正點劇團的網上直播 劇作《機器超人》,以及布里斯托爾 老域劇團精心製作、講述成長故事 的戲劇《奇蹟男孩》。 我特別感謝藝術節一直致力栽培本 地藝術人才,並在社區大力推廣藝 術文化。過去五十年間,藝術節委 託 和 製 作 的 本 地 作 品 逾 250 項, 涵 蓋粵劇、當代舞蹈、戲劇、音樂、 室內歌劇等多個範疇,不少作品更 在香港及世界各地多度載譽重演 。 藝術節每年還舉辦約 250 項「加料節 目」。適逢今年舉行北京 2022 冬季奧 運會,今屆「加料節目」將安排放映 三段各具特色的冰上舞蹈影片,不 容錯過。

1973, more than 1,700 local and international artists a year take part in the Festival and its bravura mix of innovative contemporary works and traditional offerings. In doing so, our acclaimed Festival burnishes Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts, while spotlighting local culture.

This year’s programme features a wealth of world-class productions. Many are free, including the National Theatre Brno’s powerful adaptation of Bohuslav Martinů’s opera The Greek Passion, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra concerts from the Bavarian orchestra’s famed concert hall, operas by Bayerische Staatsoper, and Paris Opera Ballet productions. Centre’s live-streamed play To Be a Machine, and Bristol Old Vic’s production of the outstanding comingof-age play Wonder Boy. I am particularly grateful for the Festival’s continuing dedication to the development of our local artists, and the cultivation of arts and culture in the community. Over the past 50 years, the Festival has commissioned and produced more than 250 local productions, embracing Cantonese opera and contemporary dance, theatre, music, chamber opera and much more. Many of the works enjoyed subsequent runs in Hong Kong and around the world. The Festival also presents some 250 PLUS events annually. This year’s PLUS programme includes three discrete videos on ice dancing, in celebration of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. The Festival’s Young Friends Scheme has reached more than 800,000 local secondary and tertiary school students over the past 30 years. I expect even more interest from our youth this year with the debut of the Arts X Tech Creative Competition and its spotlight on technology-inspired art. My congratulations, once again, on the milestone 50th edition of the Hong Kong Arts Festival. Over the next half century, I have no doubt that the Festival will continue to entertain, enlighten and dazzle Hong Kong and the world, while advancing our new and welcomed status as an Eastmeets-West centre for international cultural exchange as laid out in the National 14th Five-Year Plan.

今 年 是 香 港 藝 術 節 五 十 周 年, 感 謝你與我們一同見證這重要的里程 碑 。雖然疫情持續帶來挑戰,但藝 術節仍繼續致力為觀眾帶來海外與 本地的出色表演 。 國際交通尚未復蘇,而香港藝術節 亦作出相應調整,以線上和線下形 式呈獻一系列世界級精采表演 。今 年以「繫」為主題,帶出香港藝術 節如何透過戲劇、舞蹈、歌劇和音 樂等節目,跟世界保持聯繫,同時 也跟觀眾保持聯繫 。我們深信優秀 的藝術,不論以何種形式呈現,都 能療癒人心 。我們衷心希望能為你 在這極具意義的一年,帶來許多難 忘時光 。

The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year and I would like to thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to make productions everywhere challenging, the Festival is poised to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world. The prevailing conditions have made travel difficult and the HKAF has once again adapted its programmes in response. The Festival will continue to present an excellent world-class line-up, both online and in-venue. This year’s theme is “Connected”: the HKAF remains connected— to the world and to its audiences— bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are convinced that great art, in whatever form it might be presented, is a tonic and we sincerely hope to offer you many memorable moments in this landmark year.

We have had to surmount significant challenges to bring you this programme in the midst of the continuing pandemic. This is a big anniversary year: a 50th edition of the HKAF, 30 years of Young Friends, and of course the 25th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong SAR. An International Arts Festival in Hong Kong Connecting China and the World 香港藝術節於 1973 年正式揭幕,是國際藝壇中重要 的文化盛事,於每年 2、3 月期間呈獻眾多優秀本地 及國際藝術家的演出,以及舉辦多元化的「加料」 和教育活動,致力豐富香港的文化生活 。

香港藝術節是一所非牟利機構,2021/22 財政年度預 算(包括第 50 屆香港藝術節及 2022 年「無限亮」) 約港幣一億二千四百萬,當中香港特區政府的年度 撥 款 佔 總 收 入 約 21%, 另 外 約 16% 需 來 自 票 房 收 入,約 45% 則需依賴來自各大企業、熱心人士和慈 善基金會的贊助和捐款 。預計餘下的約 18% 則來自 其他收入,包括政府針對捐款和贊助收入而提供的 配對資助 。 香港藝術節每年呈獻眾多國際演藝名家精采多元的 演出,例如 *:

HKAF, launched in 1973, is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts as well as a diverse range of “PLUS” and educational events in February and March each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. The total budget for FY2021/22 (including the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival and 2022 “No Limits”) is approximately HK$124 million. Current Government annual funding accounts for around 21% of the Festival's total income. Around 16% of the Festival’s income needs to come from the box office, and around 45% from sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations. The remaining 18% is expected to come from other revenue sources including the Government’s matching scheme, which matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

《鄉村騎士》 Cavalleria Rusticana 時間:十九世紀復活節早上 Time: 19th Century An Easter morning

某日早上,一隊隊的男男女女唱着 歌來到教堂內 。聖陶沙來找圖列度 的母親露茜亞,詢問圖列度去了哪 裏 。露茜亞支吾着不願作答,在聖 陶沙的一再追問下,才說出圖列度 買酒去了 。 這時候忽然聽到鞭聲鈴響,是駕郵 車的艾菲奧來了 。艾菲奧是一個樂 天知命的人,此外他還有一位美麗 的妻子露娜 。這天是復活節,艾菲 奧尤其高興,因他可暫停工作,早 早回家,與他愛妻團聚 。 艾菲奧離開後,聖陶沙將自己的故 事說給露茜亞聽——原來,圖列度 本與露娜相愛,後來圖列度從軍去 了,及至圖列度回到家鄉,露娜早 已嫁給艾菲奧 。圖列度心裏委實憂 傷憤恨,於是將一股熱烈的愛情都 寄託在聖陶沙身上 。但漸漸地, 圖列度再一次與露娜接近,思欲 再獲芳心,露娜也熱誠回應了 。 對聖陶沙來說是雙重侮辱 。

Place: A Sicilian village in Italy

In the morning, a group of men and women come to the church singing. Santuzza approaches Lucia, Turiddu’s mother, and asks her where Turiddu has gone. Lucia nervously declines to answer, but after Santuzza’s repeated questions she tell her that Turiddu has gone to buy wine. Suddenly, there is a crack of a whip and it is Alfio, the mail driver, arrives. He is a happy man, with a beautiful wife, Lola. Alfio is especially happy because it is Easter and he can get off early from work and go home to his beloved wife. When Alfio is gone, Santuzza tells her story to Lucia––it appears that Turiddu was previously in love with Lola, but he joined the army and by the time Turiddu returned home, Lola had already married Alfio. Heartbroken and distraught, Turiddu sought solace in passionate love for Santuzza. However, he begins to get closer to Lola again and wants to win her back, which Lola is willing to do. This is a double humiliation for Santuzza. Lucia is shocked and saddened by the

While they are arguing, they hear a woman singing in the distance––it is Lola. As she approaches, singing, she sees the looks on the faces of Santuzza and Turiddu and knows what they know. Lola invites Turiddu to church to show him her charms. Santuzza asks Turiddu to refuse Lola’s invitation, but spurning Santuzza’s grief, Turiddu angrily throws her to the ground and goes to church. At that moment, Alfio arrives. Santuzza has told him all about Lola’s affair with Turiddu. Alfio doesn’t believe her at first and tells her that If she is lying, he will rip her heart out. aloud that they will have their revenge. In a few moments the massgoers have started leaving the church, Lucia is busy selling wine and Santuzza has fled. Turiddu and Lola are drinking and laughing in the crowd when Alfio suddenly arrives. Turiddu pours a glass of wine and offers it to Alfio, but he refuses, so Turiddu throws the wine on the ground as a sign of contempt. The townspeople know there is going to be trouble and they scatter. Alfio and Turiddu have a standoff for some time and decide to go outside the village for a duel. Turiddu leaves his mother and asks Lucia to take care of Santuzza. Moments later, Santuzza comes running to hold Lucia in her arms and cries out. A moment later, a woman runs in and shouts, "Ah! Turiddu has been killed!" Lucia almost faints, and Santuzza has already fallen to the ground, unconscious.

The crowd greets the touring troupe and the director, Canio, thanks them for their enthusiasm and announces that the show will begin at 11pm. At

this point Canio is reminded to keep an eye out for the hunchbacked Tonio, who plays the clown in the company. Canio says that he can understand if his wife is having an “affair” with someone on stage for the sake of the play, but in real life he could not stand the betrayal. After Canio has gone out for a drink with the townspeople, Nedda recalls the look in Canio’s eyes as if he were trying to read her heart. She is tired of her marriage to Canio and wants to have a real love affair. She looks up and sees the birds flying in the sky and can’t help but envy their freedom. After Nedda’s song, Tonio suddenly appears. He has been in love with Nedda for a long time, but Nedda

has been in love with Silvio, a young man from Montalto, for a long time. Tonio is too unattractive to Nedda. When Tonio’s advances fail and he tries to force a kiss on Nedda, he is driven away by Nedda’s whip. He vows revenge. Nedda and Silvio have a long conversation, not knowing that Tonio is watching, who informs Canio. Enraged, Canio arrives on the scene and attacks Silvio. In the confusion, Silvio escapes, leaving Nedda alone with an angry Canio. But as the show is about to begin, Canio puts on his costume and, sighing, says: “On stage, actors have only the duty to provide laughter for the audience, not the right to grieve.”

The audience is already seated and waiting for the show to begin. First up is Nedda’s “Colombina”, who sits on stage quietly waiting for her lover “Arlecchino” to arrive for a tryst, only to be sneered at by her servant “Taddeo” (Tonio), who brings a packet of pills with him and asks “Colombina” to pour them into a bottle of wine for “Pagliaccio” (Canio) to drink, and while he sleeps, the two of them take off. It is not long before “Pagliaccio” returns, but by now ‘he is not “Pagliaccio”, but Canio, alive and well, no longer able to distinguish between reality and drama, and not caring that he is on stage and in costume. Nedda tries to get Canio’s attention and reminds him that she is in a play, but despite Canio’s aggressive questioning, she refuses to give her lover's name, which makes Canio even more irritated. He grabs a dagger and stabs Nedda in the chest, and Nedda falls to the ground. Silvio rushes out of the audience to save Nedda, but he has also been stabbed by Canio and falls in a pool of blood. To the horror of the audience, Canio says coldly, “The comedy show is over for tonight!”

走出悲劇 Walking Out of Tragedies 《鄉村騎士》原是意大利「真實主 義」作家維爾加的小說,篇幅很 短,語言樸實且異常簡練,以對 話短句為主,幾乎沒有甚麼刻畫性 描寫,更沒有抒情 。這種需要讀 者自行「腦補」的寫作風格與當時 意大利「瘢痕畫派」的繪畫風格很 相似(法國印象主義繪畫曾深受其 影響)。這部小說後來搬上話劇舞 台,其中的情感因素不僅得以揭 示,而且變得異常強烈,風格發生 了很大變化 。馬斯卡尼譜寫的歌劇 《鄉村騎士》則不僅保留了話劇的 情感強度,還通過不同元素的並置 對比和戲劇衝突的強化,把這個故 事變得濃烈、刺激、動人心魄 。

前奏曲起於一個極其優美的主題, 似晨霧中的西西里原野,寧靜清 澈,透出檸檬馨香 。只是很快,音 樂變得激越起來,似有滿腔的哀痛 愁緒,幾經壓抑,仍無法承受 。在 情緒即將到達頂點時,卻傳來一位 男生的熱情而輕佻的歌聲,用豎琴 伴奏,是西西里舞曲的節奏,分明 是在戀人窗下歌唱的小夜曲——在 純器樂演奏中插入人聲歌唱在歌劇 序曲或前奏曲中是罕見的 。這歌聲 似乎刺激到樂隊的痛處,停息後, 樂隊的情緒反應更加激烈,終於失 聲痛哭,再輕聲嗚咽,默默吞下 。 這個有些奇怪的前奏曲不僅有着很 強的情感表達,也奠定了整部作 品的基本發展模式:從平靜安詳開 始,情感和張力迅速上升,臨近頂 點時突然打斷,插入對比強烈的段 落,然後再繼續發展 。

Cavalleria Rusticana was originally a short story by Giovanni Verga, an Italian realist writer. Comprised mainly of short dialogue in simple concise language, this very brief story is almost devoid of characterization and lyricism. Leaving much to the reader’s imagination, its writing style is similar to the style of the Tuscan Macchiaioli group of painters of the day who in turn had a strong influence on the French Impressionists). When the story was later adapted as a stage play, its emotional elements were accentuated, resulting in a significant change of style. Pietro Mascagni’s opera version of Cavalleria Rusticana retains the play’s emotional intensity and also is additionally moving with the dramatic conflicts in the plot sharpened. The prelude begins with an exquisite theme that conjures up Sicilian grasslands in the morning mist, tranquil and with a lingering fragrance of lemon in the air. But it is not long before the music stirs into life. But the profound sadness and melancholy are still unbearable. As the emotions are about to peak, a male voice is heard, accompanied by a harp, singing to the rhythm of a Sicilian dance in a passionate, yet almost frivolous way. This is evidently a serenade sung by the window of his lover. Singing lines are rarely found in an opera’s overture or prelude, which is typically a performance by the orchestra only. The singing voice seems to have moved the orchestra–– emotions heighten after this brief interruption, so much as to cause 17

the orchestra to weep, gradually dying down to a soft sob, and then silently swallowed. This somewhat idiosyncratic prelude makes a strong expression and also establishes a basic pattern for the development of the whole opera: beginning from calm and serenity, emotions and tension rapidly rise, only to be interrupted abruptly near their peak by strongly contrasting passages, before the plot is once again allowed to unfold . From an overall perspective, the famous Intermezzo is an “interruption point” in the whole opera, just before which the heroine Santuzza reveals her rival Lola’s affair to Lola’s husband, Alfio the carter, who vows to kill. This emerges just as the drama and music reach a critical point. The sound of the organ suggests a hymn from the church. Yet, the high-pitched repetition lingering insistently in the melody denotes the forceful suppression of emotions, and a strong desire for release––a seemingly complex emotion palpably expressed by the composer. The Intermezzo has since become a perennial concert hall favourite. The same manoeuvre is used elsewhere in the plot. Santuzza’s complaint to her future motherin-law is interrupted by the joyous carter’s song, as well as by a grand reverent chorus of the Easter procession. The confrontation duet between Santuzza and her betrothed Turiddu is also interrupted by the singing of Lola––it too turns out to be a serenade in Sicilian dance rhythm. The last interruption in the

opera takes place when Turiddu confesses to Alfio and bids his mother farewell before the duel. Through his actions, the dissolute young Turiddu ultimately finds his conscience in the face of life and death, becoming a “rustic knight” who dares to die for selfredemption. As he says goodbye to his mother, flushed from wine, his affections and filial attachment are evident. He entrusts Santuzza, who loves him dearly, to his mother’s care. He also begs his mother to pray for him. In a video conducted and produced by Herbert von Karajan in 1968, the mother resembles the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the son who kneels before her looks like he is repenting. From these observations, the origin of the inner force driving the male protagonist’s transformation, the frequent religious allusions throughout, as well as the fact the

story takes place during Easter, make this explicit. The opera opens with a chorus of simple peasants approaching from afar––a timely addition to the scene. The carter’s song demonstrates the cuckold Alfio’s complacency and the villagers’ flattery, making for a boisterous, festive atmosphere. In the second half, Turiddu sings a drinking song with fellow villagers, serving as a transition in tone between the Intermezzo and the duel towards the end of the opera. These events are all vivid images of the culture and customs of rural Sicily. Like the aforementioned religious element, the rustic colour helps set a vibrant tone for the story’s background, forming a stark contrast to the bloodshed of its climax. This contrast also provides the impetus for the development of the music and the drama, and is a source of the character’s inner strengths.

Ruggero Leoncavallo’s opera Pagliacci shares a number of similarities with Cavalleria Rusticana in that both stories are set in southern Italy and, present adultery, jealousy and murder against a backdrop of bucolic rural life and village religiosity. The story of Pagliacci centres on a troupe of itinerant actors, travelling from village to village performing traditional Italian commedia dell’arte. This type of drama features stock characters given fixed names, identities and personalities, usually wearing masks or with painted faces. The Commedia often recycles frequently used scenarios. Typically, performers semi-improvise based on a loosely formulated routine (written as a canovaccio, or “plot outline”), and live situations. Pagliacci, the title of the opera, in fact, means “clowns” and the name of the

stock character of the clown is “Pagliaccio”, in the singular (this was also initially first used as the title but later changed). The most important feature of this opera is the "play-within-a-play". This does not merely concern the drama’s form, but also the principle of constructing it –– which is to establish multiple levels of connections and conflicts both inside and outside the play and on and off stage, and to highlight the resulting tension as the driving force for the opera’s dramatic development. The outermost tension comes from the librettist. Leoncavallo wrote the libretto for his own opera, saying he derived it from real events in his own experience. Despite the alleged influence of several French plays, the composer offered evidence to substantiate his claim. Still, a shadow of doubt hangs over the opera’s “authenticity”. As with Cavalleria Rusticana, the prologue of Pagliacci features singing elements. Before the curtain rises, two themes of hilarity and sadness are played by the orchestra. The clown Tonio (sung by a baritone) emerges, but not at this moment as the character (an evil hunchback) ––but rather a handsome announcer. On behalf of the composer, he stresses to the audience the authenticity of the drama that they are about to see, and reminds them that actors in costumes are also human beings, flesh and soul. A de facto space and time independent of the opera is established by this Prologue – a virtual space which is still sharing the same locale (the theatre) as the opera itself. Given the composer’s

claim that the opera was based on his own experience, this “virtual theatrical space and time” and the real world are connected. The “enchantment/disenchantment” (or “hallucinating/distancing”) effect, resulted from the multiple obfuscations of space, time and identities of the characters, lay the foundation for the opera. Hence the official start of the opera. Canio, the head of a Commedia troupe, appears on stage amid the cheers of the villagers. Although he has only been advertising their performance, he adopts the tone and demeanour of the clown from the Commedia. From here, the opera’s space and time are split into the “reality” and the Commedia (i.e. the play within the play). The conflict between the two dimensions is immediately presented. The moment a villager teases Canio that Tonio has eyes on his wife Nedda, Canio jumps right out of his Commedia persona. The music is full of tension, showing his strong will in maintaining the independence and isolation of reality and drama. As the husband and head of the troupe, Canio’s superiority in reality can offset his unbearable circumstances in the Commedia. Therefore he makes all efforts to isolate them. When he learns that his wife has indeed, as in the Commedia, betrayed him and is about to elope with her lover, his rage is no longer containable. His greatest pain lies in his obligation to put on his costume and play the role of a cuckold on stage, with his own wife. Before they take to the stage,

the improvised lines delivered by his wife were exactly the promise she has made to her lover in eloping together in the “reality” of the opera. The two worlds are now completely merged, driving him into a maddening but still suppressed wrath. The final straw comes when Nedda forces through the comedy onstage, calling him a “pagliaccio”. This is mockery and derision to his ears, as if she is really treating him like a clown, entirely destroying his dignity. His last resort is to restore the original order by murder. Both the reality and the Commedia are Nedda’s traps. Taking birds in the sky as a metaphor, she expresses her yearning for freedom and light, as well as her determination to fight for them. Her love for Silvio is her only escape from both reality and the Commedia. Confronted in the Commedia by her husband’s bitter wailing and interrogation, she is filled with fear and guilt. She counteracts by performing in a more exaggerated manner. The deranged husband keeps pursuing her to tell him the name of her lover, and he leaves no room for compromise, leaving Nedda with no choice but to fight to the death. Like Cavalleria Rusticana, Pagliacci includes an orchestral Intermezzo, yet it is far less known and seldom performed separately in concerts. In fact, this Intermezzo features a more complicated expression. Its heart-piercing pain is an extension of the dramatic mood rather than a contrast. Italian director Franco Zeffirelli brought rich theatrical detail and emotion to the Intermezzo in his film of

the opera. The image of Nedda weeping while putting on her white powder makeup resonates with Canio’s aria “Vesti la giubba”; at the same time, the sadness and perseverance of other actors in the troupe in the face of such a predicament is evident. The announcer at the beginning of the opera is Tonio, the ugly hunchback who plays the servant in the Commedia. His desire for Nedda embodies the opposite of Canio’s: to connect the Commedia with the reality. In the Commedia, he can flirt with Nedda without any scruples, which has somewhat nourished his ego, but after being rejected by Nedda in reality he takes a dark turn. At the end of the opera, tragedy has prevailed thanks to Tonio’s provocations. Beholding the death around him, he shouts:

“The comedy is over!”, as if he could terminate this nightmare immediately, and hasten the departure of the Commedia’s audience. Perhaps he wants to bring the theatre audience out of the Commedia as well, or even the opera’s “reality”, to return to the same space and time when the opera hasn’t even started. He could have told us about all the revelations of the tearful composer’s work, or that the story is just made up and not to be taken seriously. Yet, he has done nothing. And we always have to leave the theatre and return to the reality. Aristotle hoped that by arousing fear and pity, Greek tragedy might lead the audience to catharsis. Is this really possible? What can be used to bring back the lost humanity, other than religion?

Are there any ways to escape the enclosure of prolonged suffering, other than love? What is it that pushes people into a corner, their only way out being to fight to the death? Can they leave it?

About Pietro Mascagni

Born in Livorno on 7 December 1863, Mascagni entered the Milan Conservatory of Music in 1882, where he studied with Amilcare Ponchielli. He left after a year to establish an opera company with which he toured Italy. In 1889, Mascagni won first place in a one-act opera competition organised by the Italian publishing house Sonzonio, where he wrote in just a few weeks Cavalleria Rusticana, a one-act opera about 70 minutes long. Mascagni’s success led to a wave of realism, or verismo, in Italian theatrical music. Mascagni wrote 15 operas, one operetta, several orchestral and vocal works, as well as songs and piano pieces. He was both a composer and a conductor. His operas are diverse: the passion and warmth of Sicily in Cavalleria Rusticana, the exoticism of Iris, the idyllicism of L’amico Fritz and Il piccolo Marat, the contrast between light and dark in Isabeau and the post-romanticism of Parisina.

Born in Naples on 8 March 1857, Ruggero Leoncavallo was a lover of music and literature from an early age, having studied piano and graduated from the Naples Conservatory in 1876. In 1882, Leoncavallo arrived in France and, influenced by French Romanticism, began to write a symphonic poem based on the poetry of Alfred de Musset, which premiered in April 1887 and was very well received by critics. On his return to Italy, Leoncavallo spent five months writing and composing his most famous work, Pagliacci, which opened in 1892 and which remains his masterpiece. Leoncavallo’s other major works include I Medici, La bohème, and a dozen other operas, all of which are innovative in terms of dramatic structure and music. An example would be the ingenious idea of "play-withinthe-play" in Pagliacci. The tragic plot and serious thoughtfulness of this work added depth to the traditional comic form; the use of various graceful and lively folk song forms is intimate, bright and charming. Leoncavallo died in Montecatini, Tuscany on 9 August 1919.

An internationally renowned Chinese pianist and conductor, Xu Zhong is currently president of Shanghai Opera House and chief conductor of the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra. He is also dean of Soochow University’s School of Music, principal director of Fondazione Arena di Verona, international chair of opera at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, external expert observer for BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and independent non-executive director of NetEase Cloud Music. Xu Zhong received a rigorous piano education in the class of Dominique Merlet at the Conservatoire de Paris. As a conductor, he learned with

Professor Huang Xiaotong and Maestro Piero Rattalino. Xu Zhong has won numerous prestigious international competitions, including Maria Canals, Hamamatsu, Santander Paloma O’Shea, Tokyo and Tchaikovsky. As a soloist, he frequently performs in music festivals in Vienna, Luxembourg, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Nice, Naantali (Finland) and Hamamatsu (Japan). Xu Zhong has been regularly invited to adjudicate at renowned international piano competitions, including Busoni, Clara Haskil, AXA Dublin, Leeds, Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud, Sviatoslav Richter, Hamamatsu and Seoul. In 2010, Xu Zhong was made a Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government, and was promoted to Officier de L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2018, for his contributions to classical music and cultural exchange.

About Martin Constantine

Martin Constantine is the international chair of opera directing at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama and MA opera directing course leader. Constantine has directed theatre and opera for the Almeida in London, the Royal Opera House, the Bristol Old Vic, Chichester Festival Theatre, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Longborough Festival Opera. His Welsh National Opera production of Paul Bunyan won an RPS Award and was nominated for a South Bank Sky Arts Award. He is co-artistic director of the multi-award-winning Liveartshow– –a company making new work with music. The company won an MTN Award for The Future for Beginners. Previous shows Das Rheingold and Manga Sister (Time Out Critic’s Choice / Best Theatre of the Year) were the centrepiece of The Yard Theatre’s Peter Brook Empty Space Award winning season. Constantine has co-adapted Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Unconsoled with Toby Farrow at the National Theatre Studio. He was director of English National Opera “Opera Works”––an innovative training programme he created for young opera singers. He Hui is an internationally renowned soprano and professor of vocal music at Xi’an Conservatory of Music. She premiered the eponymous title role of Aida at the Shanghai Grand Theatre in 1998 and won second place at the Domingo World Opera Competition in 2000. In 2014/2015, she was named one of the top 10 female singers in the world by the leading Spanish opera magazine Opera Actual. During her 24 years on the international stage, she has appeared at many famous opera houses include La Scala in Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, the Chicago Opera, the Staatsoper in Berlin, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya in Barcelona, the National Theatre of China, the NHK Opera in Tokyo and the National Opera in Athens.

He joined the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House in September 2006 and made his Royal Opera debut as Ruiz in Il trovatore. Operas he has performed include Fidelio, Carmen, Parsifal and La traviata. Dou Qianming is a vocal mentor at Anhui Normal University. He graduated from the Moscow P.I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Conservatorio di Musica Luigi Cherubini in Florence and studied under Professor Zhang Renqing of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Italian soprano Donatella Debolini and ltalian baritone Bruno de Simone. He has won first prize in the Fruccio Tagliavini lnternational Vocal Competition in Austria, and first prize and the New Star Award in th China Division at the “Angelo loforese” International Vocal Competition. He is also the winner of the Special Prize of Teatro Comunale di Ferrara in Toti Dal Monte International Competition for Opera Singers. Dou Qianming has worked with many maestros including Fabio Luisi, Fabrizio Carminati and Ryan McAdams. He performed in L’italiana in Algeri, La traviata, Gianni Schicchi, La scuola de’ gelosi, L’elisir d’amore and Carmen. He also sang the lead role in Don Giovanni for Shanghai Opera House, and he was the lead singer in Beethoven’s Symphony No 9.

She won third prize under the category of young teachers and postgraduate students at the 4th National Vocal and Opera Pieces Performance for Higher Learning Institutions in 2010. Wang Xiaoxi also won the Finalist Awards at National Vocal Competition in 2010 and at the 7th Chinese Golden Bell Award for music in 2009. She won second prize in the 17th French Marmande International Vocal Competition, the Silver Award at the 6th China Golden Bell Awards Vocal Competition, the Excellence Award at the 13th CCTV Youth Song Competition and the first prize at the 4th China (Ningbo) International Vocal Competition. Han Peng is a resident artist at Shanghai Opera House. In 2007 Han Peng graduated from the Vocal Department of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He was selected to join the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House in 2017. In 2009, Han Peng won first prize in the Turandot International Opera Competition in Verona, Italy. He was also granted the Special Prize for Best Voice by Unesco. In 2010, he won the First Prize in the Riccardo Zandonai International Competition for Young Opera Singers. In 2013, he was runner-up in the 15th CCTV National Youth Bel Canto Competition. Shanghai Opera House was established in 1956 while its predecessor, the Xin’an Tour Company dates back to 1935. Founded in 1956, the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra is one of the best-known orchestras in China, and was the first to specialise in providing accompaniment to operas and ballets. It often holds symphonic concerts and plays music from different periods and of different styles at home and abroad. The Shanghai Opera House Orchestra has provided the music for countless performances, such as the Chinese and western operas, including Turandot, Otello, Falstaff, La fille du régiment, Aida, La bohème, Attila and Thunderstorm, the oratorios Messiah and Carmina Burana, classical Chinese and western works such as Beethoven’s complete piano concertos, his

Symphonies Nos 3,4, 6, 7 and 8, Tchaikovsky’s Symphonies Nos 4, 5 and 6, Mozart’s Symphony No 41 and Violin Concerto No 3, and He Zhanhao and Chen Gang’s Butterfly Lovers. The Shanghai Opera House Orchestra has also provided accompaniment for ballets such as The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Manon and Don Quixote, and for the original dance dramas Early Spring and Chang E. For many years, the Shanghai Opera House Orchestra has jointly host concerts with numerous conductors and artists, such as Daniel Oren, Lorin Maazel, John Nelson, Neeme Järvi, Kurt Masur, Franz Welser-Möst, Fabio Luisi, Will Humburg, Thomas Sanderling, Markus Stenz, Zoltan Kocsis, Moris Pyrrhus, Jan Latham-Koenig, He Hui, Wang Jian, and so on. The orchestra receives frequent invitations from major international music organisations and has visited numerous countries and regions, such as Finland, Italy, England, Germany, Hong Kong and Macau. It made its US debut in 2019.
