適逢香港藝術節踏入金禧 50 周年, 謹此衷心祝賀。 香港藝術節是本地和國際藝壇一年一 度的盛事,致力為香港文化生活增添 姿彩。鑑於 2022 年年初的第五波疫 情,香港藝術節部分現場演出因場地 關閉而須取消。儘管如此,藝術節 迅速作出應變,一方面將部分演出移 師線上舉行,另一方面如期舉辦多 個線上節目,更開放其中多項節目 供市民免費觀賞。此外,今年的藝 術節還安排把六個現場演出節目改於 2022 年下半年舉行,作為第 50 屆藝 術節的「延續」,巧妙地承接大會主題 「繫」, 亦充分反映香港藝術界的人士 能隨時隨地發揮無限創意,將文化糅 合於市民的生活之中。 香港藝術節將安排在 2022 年 7 月至 11 月期間上演連串多姿多彩的現場 節目,包括︰向一代粵劇名伶致敬 的「新馬師曾名劇展」以及動人心 魄的大型舞作《無極》。為慶祝香 港大會堂 60 周年及香港藝術節 50 周 年,香港小交響樂團將與城市當代 舞蹈團攜手呈獻精湛的聯合音樂會 《影幻形光》。 每屆的香港藝術節均吸引逾 1700 名

I congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) on celebrating its Golden Anniversary this year.

Striving to enhance the cultural vibrancy of Hong Kong, the HKAF is an annual highlight for arts enthusiasts from home and abroad. Due to the closure of cultural and arts venues during the fifth wave of the pandemic earlier this year, certain in-venue programmes had to be cancelled. This notwithstanding, the HKAF was quick in moving some programmes online while presenting some others (including those open for the public free of charge) as originally planned. Six of these programmes were rescheduled in the latter half of 2022 as a “line-up” to continue the HKAF under the theme “Connected”. It demonstrates the flexibility and creativity of the Hong Kong arts sector in infusing culture in the daily lives of people.

This year’s HKAF features a wide array of in-venue programmes, including A Tribute to Cantonese Opera Legend Sun Ma Sze Tsang and the stunning dance performance Colossus, which will be presented from July to November. In addition, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and artists from City Contemporary Dance Company will jointly present an evening event featuring a spectacular music and dance performance entitled Reflections of Refractions, to mark the

Every year, more than 1,700 local and international artists take part in the HKAF. With its wide array of traditional performances and innovative contemporary works, the HKAF plays a crucial role in raising Hong Kong’s international reputation in the arts world while highlighting the rich local culture. At the same time, it underpins the strategy to support Hong Kong’s development into an East-meetsWest centre for international cultural exchange under the National 14th FiveYear Plan.

I am encouraged to see that despite the tremendous difficulties during the pandemic, the HKAF remains committed to promoting arts education in schools and other outreach activities. In particular, the PLUS programmes of the Festival bring together artists and members of the public through a range of activities such as behind-the-scenes videos, masterclasses, artist dialogues and preand post-performance talks. I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the hard work and dedication of the HKAF team who always strives to ensure the Festival’s ongoing success over the past 50 years. My gratitude also goes to all sponsors and donors for their generous support to the HKAF and the local arts and cultural development.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival marks a significant milestone this year. Thank you for joining us in celebrating its 50th edition. Though the pandemic continues to present challenges and has prompted us to be extranimble in our response this year, the Festival’s determination to bring you some of the best in performing arts from across the world remains unabated.

The prevailing conditions made travel difficult and the HKAF once again adapted. Though the fifth wave of the pandemic forced venues to close, the Festival still managed to present an excellent world-class lineup online and will present some of the programmes it couldn’t show, on a deferred schedule later this year. The Hong Kong Arts Festival remains “Connected”—to the world and to its audiences—bringing a range of programmes, including theatre, dance, opera and music. We are convinced that great art, in whatever form, is a tonic and we

hope to provide many memorable moments in this landmark year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who make the Festival possible. These include the HKSAR Government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department, which provides an annual subvention; the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, a long-time supporter of the HKAF; and corporate sponsors, charitable foundations and individual donors, for their generous support. Sincere thanks also to all the participating artists, who have brought such joy to Hong Kong audiences during these times, the difficulties of the pandemic notwithstanding.

On behalf of the Festival team, I warmly welcome you to this programme at the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival.

Due to the pandemic, many invenue performances have had to be rescheduled—some were postponed to the second half of 2022, while some will be joining the 2023 line-up.

Before we embrace the long-awaited new season of live performances in 2023, do join us in a small roundup—including this very film you will be watching—as 2022 draws to a close. We’d like to take the time to appreciate the efforts of all of our co-workers (whether on stage or behind the scenes) who made this possible, and to hope for a successful year ahead. Above all, we hope this film and other programmes from the 50th Hong Kong Arts Festival have brought you comfort and joy.

In this and many other ways, the Festival has been a part of the Hong Kong story during the past 50 years, playing a leading role in the development of the arts in Hong Kong. HKAF actively collaborates with Hong Kong’s own creative talent and showcases emerging local artists. Over the years, HKAF has commissioned and produced over 250 local productions across genres including Cantonese opera, theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance, many with successful subsequent runs in Hong Kong and overseas. Recent HKAF productions include Gangsters of Hong Kong, Always by Your Side, Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers, A Floating Family – A Trilogy, Hong Kong Odyssey, Danz Up, Datong – The Chinese Utopia, The Amahs and Murder in San Jose, to name a few.

香港藝術節多年來與知名海外藝術家及團體聯合 製作不少優秀作品,當中包括由香港藝術節、香 港歌德學院及翩娜.包殊烏珀塔爾舞蹈劇場聯合 製作的《抹窗人》、由倫敦老域劇院、布魯克林 音樂學院與尼爾街製作公司製作、香港藝術節為 聯合委約機構之一的「橫貫計劃」之《暴風雨》 及《李察三世》、由香港藝術節及上海國際藝術 節聯合委約的《青蛇》、三藩市歌劇院與香港藝 術節聯合製作的《紅樓夢》等。

HKAF frequently partners with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional works, such as Der Fensterputzer (The Window Washer) co-produced by HKAF, Goethe-Institut Hong Kong and Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Richard III and The Tempest produced by The Old Vic, BAM and Neal Street under “The Bridge Project” with HKAF as a co-commissioning institution, Green Snake cocommissioned with Shanghai International Arts Festival, and Dream of the Red Chamber co-produced with San Francisco Opera.

HKAF invests heavily in arts education for young people. Over the past 30 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached around 800,000 local secondary and tertiary school students. A variety of arts education projects serving primary, secondary, and tertiary school students have been launched in recent years, featuring activities such as student showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, opportunities to attend Festival performances, as well as in-school workshops and lecture demonstrations led by international and local artists. Donations to the “Student Ticket Scheme” also make available approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets each year.

HKAF organises a diverse range of “Festival PLUS” activities in community locations each year to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include films, lecture demonstrations, masterclasses, workshops, symposia, backstage visits, exhibitions, meet-the-artist sessions, and guided cultural tours.

HKAF actively promotes inclusiveness and understanding via the arts to every corner of the community. The “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, was launched in 2019. Through a series of performances and diverse arts experiences for students and the community, “No Limits” strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club is delighted to once again partner with the Hong Kong Arts Festival as it celebrates its 50th anniversary year.

In the past 50 years, the Festival has brought a remarkable range of world-class performances to Hong Kong. Events which have never failed to bring pleasure and delight to us all, and to open up new perspectives for our imaginations to explore.

Throughout the years, The Hong Kong Jockey Club has been a major supporter, donating over HK$500 million to date. This is made possible by the Club’s unique integrated business model, through which racing and wagering generate tax and charity support for the community.

Rising to the challenge of the pandemic, this year’s Festival is no less impressive. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series brings world-class performances through online productions from the Bayerische Staatsoper, Bamberg Symphony Orchestra and Paris Opera Ballet. Laila in Hong Kong, supported by the Club in celebration of the Festival’s 50th anniversary, provides an online insight into the making of this innovative performance experience.

The Jockey Club has long promoted local talent. This year, even more opportunities are offered via The Jockey Club Local Creative Talents Series and the all-new Jockey Club InnoArts Series. Meanwhile, the fourth edition of HKartsFestival@ TaiKwun presents a number of online productions in different disciplines, connecting artists and the community. SYNOPSIS

《日 尚未 新》是音樂劇《日新》 的創作紀錄影片,《日新》最 初原定 2021 年初正式演出,可 惜受疫情影響無奈延期,但台 前幕後並未停步。為了紀錄重 要的創作、排練時刻,香港藝 術節邀請紀錄片導演黃飛鵬拍 攝,在舞台帷幕揭開前,讓觀 眾見證此劇團隊的高山低谷, 感受演員與劇中主角孫日新的 脆弱與堅持。

Before the Sun Rises: The Yat-sen Musical Dairy is a documentary on the creation of the Yat-sen Musical. The musical was meant to be performed in early 2021 but had to be delayed due to the pandemic. Yet, preparation work on and off stage was not halted. To document the important moments in the creation process and rehearsals, the Hong Kong Arts Festival invited Documentary Director Wong Fei-pang to shoot this film which allows the audience to witness the ups and downs of the cast and crew before the stage curtain rises, and take in the vulnerability and persistence of the actors and the protagonist, Sun Yat-sen.

When a plot carries deep meaning, a performance leaves a strong impression and moves hearts, the stage design is magnificent, the costume design is outstanding, the lyrics possess quiet charm, and the cast and crew all outdo themselves on stage and behind the scenes, a show can be delivered successfully.

But sometimes that is not the case.

When programmes are cancelled and delayed, and theatres are left empty with only the air conditioner running, there is no chance of a successful performance.

While the Yat-sen Musical was repeatedly delayed, rehearsals for the performance continued to take place. The cast worked hard

for a successful performance, unwavering even in the presence of cameras. Indeed, filming does not help them sing better, cure their sicknesses, or allow them to recoup lost time and practise more before the actual performances start.

The process is actually the same, regardless of whether the show is performed successfully, delayed or cancelled. The cast and crew will still need to make an effort, experience suffering, and face difficulties. Yet even when those processes are filmed, it doesn’t yield success. Why?

It turns out that the proposition of the Yat-sen Musical depends on me. How many unsuccessful trials do I need to experience before I can be sure I have failed?

If I admit defeat this instant and do nothing, would life still unfold

perfectly? The story of Yat-sen indeed reflects life in the theatre, and this documentary illustrates that experience.

The success of the performance has been dependant on you from the start. You need to decide whether the musical will be performed to a full house, whether there will be additional shows, and even how this innovative documentation of the theatrical production will be presented.

The drawing up of programmes depends on people, and so does the accomplishment of plans, but that requires us to work together.

Originally scheduled for early 2021, the musical Yat-sen was postponed until early 2023 due to the pandemic. But despite the unfavourable circumstances, the Hong Kong Arts Festival remained hard at work behind the scenes. In the leadup to the 51st HKAF, the Festival commissioned a 45-minute documentary on the musical from Wong Fei-pang, filmmaker and recipient of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Film. Wong said that his project was “stirring things up”, in a positive way, which led us to wonder if the film was a documentation of the show, a documentary or a making-of? Wong’s answer to the question was an assertive “none of the above”. He expressed confidence that he had encapsulated the dramatic essence of the musical without giving away too much of the plot. Rather than creating suspense, Wong said the goal of the documentary was to attract a crowd.

Going hybrid with a new storyboard

On the day of our interview, we observed an editing session for the documentary. Wong showed us the trailer, in which a group of young people raise their arms and chant slogans against a pitch-black background. In the front is their leader, with his back turned to the camera, his posture imbued with a sense of ambition and passion. Yet the band of youngsters soon start to fall one after another like dominos. The leader slowly turns his head, revealing the sombre profile that we soon discover belongs to the

actor Ling Man-lung, who plays the young Yat-sen in the musical.

Wong has always had a passion for history. “In history books, we often come across nameless crowds without ever learning much about them. Who followed in the footsteps of those people and what happened to their aspirations?” This question— posed by Wong in an essay from 2021—echoes the scenes in the trailer. “The scene is designed very differently in the musical,” says Wong. “We have been tinkering with elements taken from the script. In the musical, the scene has a bright tone, yet

we took a completely different approach in the documentary.”

According to Wong, although both the musical and the documentary are based on the same text, they both hit quite differently. Specifically, the documentary emphasises atmospheric presentation and avoids discussion of specific plotlines or lyrics from the show. He stresses that filming a documentary is not as easy as simply setting cameras up to record a show from three different angles.

Film Director Interview 紀錄片導演專訪 舞台劇演員嘗試電影演繹 2022 年 9 至 10 月期間,黃飛鵬 與紀錄片團隊花上逾一個月時 間,緊貼音樂劇台前幕後拍攝 彩排及製作過程,包括拍攝 男主角凌文龍如何克服唱歌挑 戰、藝術節如何應付票務、場 地轉變的疑難等等。最誇張是 在緊密的舞台劇排練檔期中, 租用了一電影控制廠,抽取音 樂劇的部分場口重新拍攝。 拍攝前,他與憑《白日青春》 入圍金馬獎「最佳攝影」的攝 影師梁銘佳一起構思分鏡,為 了不劇透,燈光、背景、道具 都要另外製作。黃飛鵬指,原 有劇本已非常完熟,他做的是 抽取劇本多個場口重新創作, 例如戲中很多關於起義討論的 場景,他便改以「社團式打邊 爐講數」呈現 ; 又例如有幕於 泰山之巔結婚,他用上人工 雪,「影片中主角一個瞬間的 眨眼,便去到一個飄雪空間, 因為泰山是以雪景聞名,我們 就可以這樣玩」。電影與音樂 劇採用不同表達方式,精神卻 不相悖。他說有賴獲得音樂劇 創作團隊、藝術節等各方面信 任,才能成事,尤其音樂劇導 演鄧偉傑及編劇陳詠燊也在電 影拍攝前提出一些建議,有助 拍攝更順暢。 紀錄片並非單純紀錄,演員 須抽空為影片進行排練及拍 攝,由於舞台與電影演出方 式不同,他們要調校演繹方 式,「我請他們當這次是一個 break、一個 vacation,嘗試拿 着同一個文本再創作」,黃飛 鵬說。片中更包括導演、編 劇、音樂總監金培達、作詞人 岑偉宗等訪問,剖白如何處理 音樂與歌詞。 ©Wong Miu Sin 26

Theatre actors try their hand at performance for film

Over the course of a month between September and October 2022, Wong and his crew filmed the musical’s production and rehearsals, following the team on and off stage. Documented are moments of crisis, such as when Ling Man-lung, the lead actor, struggles to overcome singing challenges, or when the Festival deals with problems involving ticketing arrangements or changes of venue. Most challenging of all was making time to reshoot parts of the musical in a rented film studio while working with a tight rehearsal schedule.

Before shooting, Wong drew up the storyboard with Leung Mingkai, who was recently nominated for a Golden Horse Award for Best Cinematography. To ensure a spoiler-free production,

props, set designs and lights were all customised specifically for the film. Wong noted that, given that the original script was thoroughly developed, all he did was recreate some of the scenes. A good example are the scenes involving talk of an uprising, which he adapted into a gang-style meeting where deals are done over a hotpot. Another example is the use of falling snow for the wedding scene set on the peak of Mount Tai. “In the blink of an eye, the protagonist is transported into a world of snow. The scene was inspired by the famous sight of Mount Tai covered in snow.” While differing in form, the cinematic and theatrical versions of the work were done in the same spirit. Wong attributes the success of the production to the support and trust he received from parties such as Yat-sen’s creative team and the HKAF. In

particular, he noted that director Tang Wai-kit and playwright Sunny Chan had shared helpful insights during the preproduction stage.

Wong’s documentary was not simply a passive record of Yatsen, but required actors to make time for rehearsals and shooting. Going from the stage to the screen, the actors were forced to recalibrate their performance styles. “I encouraged them to take it as a break, or a vacation,” Wong says. “With the same script in hand, they were asked to reimagine the work.” Included in the film are interviews with Tang, Chan, composer and music director Peter Kam, as well as lyricist Chris Shum, in which they share their thoughts on the music and lyrics created for the project.

A vivid portrayal of concerted effort

Having gone to great lengths for the documentary, Wong sees his efforts to “stir things up” in a positive light. He was encouraged by the HKAF’s decision to specially commission a film director, in clear hope of bringing forth a refreshing viewing experience for the audience. Meanwhile, the crew was moved by the musical itself. “Live singing has always been an integral part of musicals. I was in awe when I heard them sing in the rehearsal room for the first time. It caught me completely off guard; I was thrilled to see them perform live! Our goal is to draw the biggest crowd with whom we can share our excitement.”

Wong likened Yat-sen to a vinyl record: the protagonist is on Side A as a heroic revolutionary, and on Side B a young man troubled by failure. To Wong, the brilliance of Yat-sen lies in how it breathes life, among many other human qualities, into a historical figure. “Reading the script, Sun Yat-sen feels like flesh and blood,” Wong says.

“I tried to do the same for the actors in the documentary. Other than portraying the characters in all their seriousness, we also wanted to capture moments of delight; we aimed to illustrate the times of grimness as much as those of disorientation and weariness.

“As adults, we sometimes find ourselves unable to own up to certain things in life,” Wong says. “We have all swallowed tears at work, taken sick leave only to stay home and cry…When we hit rock bottom, do we give up and go into a slump? Do we just leave everything to chance?”

Wong was also moved by the way that delving into Sun’s life allowed him glimpses into his own. “Like all of us, Sun Yat-sen had his troubled times. Maybe this musical is healing in a way, and by the end of it we can all return to our lives stronger. That said, it doesn’t try to teach us a lesson; it urges us to make our own decisions.”

Wong Fei-pang is an independent filmmaker who holds a BA (Hons) Degree from the City University of Hong Kong’s School of Creative Media. In 2015, he studied at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Film Academy and was awarded a certificate of excellence for his performance. He later co-directed the controversial film Ten Years with his segment, Season of the End. Apart from conducting an overwhelming number of community screenings, public screenings at cinemas were in high demand. The film was named Best Picture at the Hong

Kong Film Awards. His latest work, The Murders of Oiso, was premiered at the Busan International Film Festival. He is currently working on his first feature film project, A burning worm, which won the MandarinVision Award at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Project Promotion platform. Peter Kam is a renowned Hong Kong composer who has written numerous musical theatre works, including And Then There’s You, Born to be a Hero, Love you Teresa, Ah! Ku Liang, the award winning Mama Love Me Once Again and Jews in Shanghai, which opened the Shanghai International Arts Festival in 2015. Kam composed his first opera, Lin Huiyin in 2017. Kam is an 11-time winner of the awards for Best Original Film Music and Best Original Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Known for his diverse and moving compositions, he has scored more than 100 films. In 1999, he won the award for Best Original Score for Purple Storm at the 36th

Golden Horse Awards. In 2006, he won the Silver Bear award for Best Film Music for Isabella at the Berlin International Film Festival, a first for a Chinese composer. His recent movie scores include Soulmate, Helios, the Finding Mr Right series, the Cold War series, as well as Concerto of The Bully, which won the award for Best Original Song at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2018.

In 2007, Kam was commissioned by the Government of the Hong Kong SAR to compose Just Because You Are Here, the theme song for the 10th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HKSAR. In addition, he was commissioned to compose the theme song for the 2008 Beijing Olympics’ one-year countdown campaign. That same year, the Hong Kong Government awarded him the Medal of Honour for his contributions to the arts.

Sunny Chan is a screenwriter and film director He graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts and from Lingnan University with a Master of Arts in Chinese in 2000. More than 20 screenplays written by Chan have been produced, including the Love Undercover series, Funeral March, and Diva, Ah Hey In 2018, Chan’s directorial debut Men on the Dragon received 11 nominations at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards, included for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Chan has served as a lecturer in Screenwriting and Creative Development at the HKAPA

He has also hosted a number of TV programmes and written columns in the local press.

Chris Shum is a celebrated lyricist with work spanning musicals, plays, movies, television dramas and pop music. In 2006, he won the award for Best Original Film Song at the 43rd Golden Horse Awards and a prize at the 2006 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards for the song Perhaps Love. He also won the award for Best Original Film Song in 2013 at the 32nd Hong Kong Film Awards for the theme song of The Last Tycoon. The Legend of Zhang Baoza earned him a prize at the 2011 CASH Golden Sail Music Awards. He has also won the Best Original Music Award four times at the Hong Kong Drama Awards.

In 2018, Shum wrote the script and lyrics for Pica Pica Choose, a

collaborative production by Mr Wing Theatre Company (Taiwan) and Yat Po Singers. Other works include the script and lyrics for Yat Po Singers’ This Victoria Has No Secrets and Hong Kong Repertory Theatre’s La Cage aux Folles. He also wrote the Cantonese lyrics for the Disney animated films The Lion King (2019) and Frozen 2 (2019), as well as lyrics for the soundtrack of Dante Lam’s film The Rescue (2021).

Tang Wai-kit is the art director of the We Draman theatre group and the chairman of The Alliance of Theatre Professionals of Hong Kong Tang graduated from the HKAPA’s School of Drama Tang studied and worked in Paris, London and Seoul before his return to Hong Kong in 2007

During the past 30 years, Tang has directed more than 50 stage productions His musical works include co-directing with Lam Lap Sam in various HKAPA productions such as Damn Yankees, A Charles Dickens Christmas Musical, and The Pajama Game. His overseas projects include RootOne Company’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Korea, iMusical’s Van Gogh and The Moon and Sixpence in Shanghai.

Tang has also collaborated with the Hong Kong Arts Festival. He has directed productions including The Unexpected Man, Danz Up and Always by Your Side, and performed in Murder in San Jose and Smear
