MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE
大部分節目，當中許多節目更開放 予世界各地愛好藝術的觀眾 。
衷心祝賀香港藝術節今年踏入第 49 屆 。這一年一度的藝術盛事在新冠 肺炎疫情的挑戰下，仍然辦得有聲 有色，精采可期。
今年藝術節帶來一連串繽紛多彩的 網 上 及 現 場 節 目， 涵 蓋 音 樂、 歌 劇、戲劇、舞蹈、電影等多個藝術 範疇 。總體來說，藝術節會在「遠 在咫尺」的主題下，呈獻合共約三百 場節目、活動及表演。 藝術節的亮點，包括捷克布爾諾國 家歌劇院及其兩年一度「布爾諾楊 納傑克節」的多場精選數碼版歌劇 及音樂會 。同樣引人注目的，還有 兩部取材自英國劇作家尼爾 ．巴奈 特改編劇作《鼠疫》的發人深省作 品，一部為英語版，另一部為粵語 版。粵語版為香港本地製作，英語 版則由身處六個地區的六名演員作 網上實時演出。來自蘇格蘭鄉村的 魔術師史葛．蕭凡亦會在網上實時 演出，他的互動作品《心靈旅程》每 場只限三十位觀眾參與 。此外，亦 有十六部慶祝香港賽馬會當代舞蹈 平台十周年的製作，包括與中國內 地及英國藝術家合力創作的作品 。 在藝術節開幕演出中，香港中樂團 會進行兩首曲目的世界首演，而廣 獲讚譽的莫斯科莫伊謝耶夫舞團， 則會為這國際藝壇盛會作閉幕演出。 我很高興市民可於登記後免費觀賞

It gives me great pleasure to congratulate the Hong Kong Arts Festival on the staging of its 49th annual celebration of the arts, and doing so in splendid fashion despite the daunting challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s Festival features a cheering range of online and in-venue programmes showcasing music, opera, theatre, dance, film and more. In all, the Festival presents some 300 events, activities and performances under the theme “Separate Together”. Festival highlights include a dazzling digital selection of operas and concerts from the Czech Republic’s National Theatre Brno and its biennial Janá ek Brno Festival. Equally notable are two piercing productions of British playwright Neil Bartlett’s adaptation of The Plague, one in English, the other in Cantonese. The Cantonese version is produced in Hong Kong, while the English version is a live

online performance starring six actors in six time zones. Illusionist Scott Silven also performs online and live, from rural Scotland. His interactive production, The Journey, is limited to 30 participants per show. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series celebrates its 10th anniversary with 16 productions, including collaborations with artists from the Chinese mainland and the United Kingdom. The Festival opens with the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra performing two world premieres and concludes its international slate with the acclaimed Igor Moiseyev Ballet from Moscow. I find it particularly gratifying to note that the vast majority of events are available free of charge, upon registration, with many of them open to arts lovers from all over the world. The Arts Festival’s promotion of arts education in schools continues. And PLUS programmes bring together audiences and artists through behindthe-scenes videos, artist dialogues and pre- and post-performance talks. For all that, and much more, I am grateful to the inspired diligence and dedication of the Hong Kong Arts Festival team. My thanks, too, to the sponsors and donors for their generous support to arts and culture, particularly in this trying time. I wish you all an enjoyable and memorable Hong Kong Arts Festival.

The Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF) is a major international arts festival committed to enriching the cultural life of the city by presenting leading local and international artists in all genres of the performing arts in February and March each year. Since its launch in 1973, HKAF has presented top international artists and ensembles across multiple genres—from music, opera, Chinese opera and ballet to break dance and experimental theatre. International guests have included major state operas, established theatres, top orchestras and stars of the day. We also frequently partner with renowned international artists and institutions to produce exceptional new works. We have also collaborated with Hong Kong’s own creative talent to produce work which is now part of the local canon and to showcase emerging local artists. Over the years, the HKAF has commissioned and produced over 200 local productions across genres including theatre, chamber opera, music and contemporary dance—many with successful subsequent performances in Hong Kong and overseas. As part of our enduring commitment to enriching the cultural life of the city, we organise a diverse range of Festival PLUS activities for the community before and during the Festival to enhance engagement between artists and audiences. These include film screenings, masterclasses, exhibitions,

meet-the-artist sessions and guided backstage and cultural tours. Beyond the main Festival, the HKAF also promotes inclusivity and understanding through the arts. Its “No Limits” project, co-presented with The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, strives to create an inclusive space for people with different abilities to share the joy of the arts together. To nurture the next generation of artists and audiences, the HKAF also invests heavily in yearround arts education for young people. Over the past 29 years, our “Young Friends” scheme has reached over 782,000 local secondary and tertiary school students; members can enjoy showcases, pre-performance talks, open rehearsals, Festival performances and in-school workshops led by international and local artists. Donations to the Student Ticket Scheme also make approximately 10,000 half-price student tickets available each year. HKAF is a non-profit organisation. Its principal income sources are: recurrent funding from the government, box office revenues, and sponsorship and donations made by corporations, individuals and charitable foundations which form a significant portion of total income and also enables HKAF to receive support from the Government’s matching scheme that matches income generated through private sector sponsorship and donations.

As the pandemic continues to define our everyday lives and force social distancing on us, emotional proximity has become more important than ever. In response, mentalist Scott Silven has been bridging distance, creating worlds within worlds that are intimate, intriguing and immersive. Revisiting his childhood memories of the Scottish countryside, Silven's latest theatre production The Journey is online, in real time, and brings audience members from all over the world on a timely journey that explores ways of connecting with other souls. Ahead of his performances at the Festival, the HKAF spoke to Silven about his own journey of connection and wonderment.

你甚麼時候開始對心靈連結感 興趣 ？ 它最為吸引你之處是 甚麼 ？ 當我開始研究幻覺現象時，便 著迷於心靈連結，它是我創作 時的根本元素 。我相信，一個 讀心師能夠使自己與表演者和 觀眾建立最緊密的聯繫 。我們 現正身處於破碎的時代，從以 往的創作中，我發現所有人的 內心深處都渴望某種連結 。
Interview
When did you become interested in human connection and what is it that fascinates you the most?
I think I’ve been fascinated with it since I started studying illusion—it’s intrinsic to the type of work I do. I believe that being a mentalist grants you one of the closest connections possible between performer and audience. We live in such fragmented times and, through the work that I create, I have come to realise we all have a desire to connect on a deeper level. 13
你的童年經歷如何影響你對神 秘事物的看法 ？ 小時候，有幾個驚嘆的時刻令 我印象深刻，而且它們全都與 我的祖父相關 。祖父是個說故 事的能手，能夠喚起我的想像 力，他是第一個教我把玩幻覺 現象的人：他變走了一顆我簽 了名的糖果，然後將它變在桌 上一個密封的火柴盒內 。他隨 即與我分享箇中奧秘，原理簡 單得令人尷尬，但已立即引起 我的興趣，因為他能夠將平凡 的事物變得不平凡 。

How did your childhood encounters influence your perception of mystery? A couple of defining moments of wonder from my childhood stand out for me, and they usually echo back to my grandfather. He was a great storyteller and had the ability to capture my imagination. He also taught me my first illusion: he took a piece of candy that I’d signed my name on, vanished it and made it appear in a sealed matchbox on the table. He then immediately shared the secret with me. It was embarrassingly simple, but I was instantly captivated by him taking something ordinary and creating something extraordinary from it.

How has your knowledge of hypnosis, psychology and theatre helped to create and shape your works? I secretly went to Milan to do a hypnosis course when I was 15 and didn’t tell my mom. I told her I was going on a school trip for the week, and came back with a hypnotic and psychological technique that I still use to this day. My shows use a variety of methods—storytelling, suggestion, psychological and traditional theatrical methods— the weaving together of these techniques hopefully creates a richer experience that goes beyond just a magic show.
Interview
The Journey also asks the audience to consider what makes them who they are as the show explores the uniqueness of each and every person who takes part in the show. We’re all driven by memories, decisions, relationships, and dreams, and The Journey should make you look closely at your own life and consider what motivates you and what you’re capable of when you open yourself to new forms of connection.
What power or influence do you think The Journey has on its viewers, especially in a time of a global pandemic? My primary objectives for the show are to delight, to astonish and, ultimately, to inspire connection. It’s always about so much more than simple escapism. Audiences have told me that the show has created whole new forms of connection as they find themselves, family or friends taking part in the extraordinary together.

網上與現場表演有甚麼分別 ？ 網上演出的難處讓我能夠有獨 一無二的機會與觀眾建立一個 深層次的連繫，而這種連繫是 不能在現場表演中做到的 。在 《心 靈 旅 程》表 演 開 始 前， 我 們會事先給予參與者一些特別 製作的互動短片，好讓他們準 備心情 。除此之外，有一點安 排影響非常大：參與者只須安 坐家中，並帶上一件對他們來 說別具意義和價值的物件，如 此安排是希望能夠令演出模式 更加個人，可以讓參與者的體 驗比起坐在漆黑的劇場之中更 加深刻 。

How different to live performances is creating and performing for online shows? The challenges of the online format have allowed unique opportunities to connect with the audience on a deeper level that I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do in a live environment. For The Journey , we send the audience exclusive advance content that they can interact with before they engage with the experience. As well as this, there’s something very powerful about audience members sitting in the comfort of their own homes. They are asked to bring objects that have meaning and purpose for them to the performance itself, which I hope makes it a far more personal and powerful experience than sitting in the usual darkened space of a theatre.

Allie Winton Butler is an award-winning theatre artist and director. Her work has an international presence through recent collaborations with the British Council, as well as being creative lead for the 2021 UK City of Culture and the National Trust. One of Scotland’s leading creative talents, Allie has created and produced work for theatres 22
across the country in her capacity as creative director of her own company. Jeff Sugg is an award-winning designer and theatre-maker with over 20 years’ experience in the performing arts. He has designed for a wide range of productions from Broadway to regional theatre to international concert halls and has been a principal collaborator with music and theatre artists including The Wooster Group, Julia Wolfe, Cynthia Hopkins, Jim Findlay and Mikel Rouse. Theatre credits include: Tina, The Tina Turner Musical (London, Hamburg, Utrecht and Broadway), All My Sons, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Broadway, US Tour and Australia), Sweat, Bring It On and 33 Variations. His off-Broadway and regional credits include work for Second Stage Theater, The Public Theater, St. Ann’s Warehouse, BAM Harvey Theater, Lincoln Center, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Arena Stage, La Jolla Playhouse and Berkeley Rep. He has received numerous awards, including the Lucille Lortel Award, the Obie Award, the Bessie Award, and two Henry Hewes Design Awards.

Gareth Fry is a sound designer best known for his work in theatre, having won multiple Tony and Olivier awards for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and Complicité’s The Encounter. He has also designed events and exhibitions, from the Victoria and Albert Museum’s landmark David Bowie Is exhibition, to sound effects for the Opening Ceremony of the 2012 Olympic 23

Jherek Bischoff is a composer, arranger, producer and multiinstrumental performer. His critically acclaimed albums include Cistern and Strung Out In 24
Heaven: A Bowie String Quartet Tribute, the latter of which was composed and co-released with Amanda Palmer. Bischoff has collaborated with the likes of the Kronos Quartet, David Byrne and Robert Wilson. He has performed in prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall and his work has been performed by renowned ensembles and orchestras around the world. Bischoff’s work for theatre includes the sold-out run of The Ocean at the End of the Lane at the National Theatre in London, for which he received a Stage Debut Award nomination for Best Composer or Lyricist. In 2019, Bischoff premiered his first opera, symphony and ballet. He is currently scoring for theatre, film and television, and releasing new music online.
