In alignment with the University's mission to provide a holistic education that nurtures the integrity of every individual, and its values of unwavering dedication to academic excellence and community service, the Leadership Qualities Centre (LQC) endeavours to empower HKBU students to become dedicated global and local citizens. Our aim is to inspire them to take active roles in confronting and resolving global challenges while also encouraging them to become proactive contributors within their local community.
To develop students’ leadership qualities, the LQC organises various engagement activities and programmes to provide unique learning opportunities for them to serve, lead, and grow. Echoing the Centre’s dedication and the University’s mission, our programmes and events focus on five key areas through experiential learning: Citizenship & Community Engagement, Global Exposure, Leadership Development, Campus Integration and Cultural Literacy Additionally, as part of University Life (U-Life) programme’s requirement, LQC centralises and organises a series of Co-curricular Learning activities to promote “Whole Person Education” which fosters the development of the seven core graduate attributes among students. We believe these areas are essential for becoming a successful future-shaping leader, in addition to academic excellence. Last year, students engaged in these types of events and gained valuable experiences, reflecting on their roles to become sagacious, forward-thinking individuals
To design educational yet exciting activities, LQC collaborates with different NGOs and institutions to co-create unique learning experiences for the students Thanks to their contributions, we are able to design more distinctive and meaningful projects that enable our students in stepping out of the classroom to explore and engage with the communities.
In our ongoing commitment to enhancing student engagement, we actively support student-led initiatives During the AY 2023-24, 506 students took on leadership roles or served as members of the Organising Committee (OC), collaborating with LQC to codevelop a variety of valuable experiential learning opportunities The team is firmly of the view that active student participation is essential in making each learning experience significantly more meaningful, complementing the efforts of the staff
We are excited to see the growth and rewards our students gain from our programmes and events Throughout the academic year, we provided a total of 67 student development activities, including 21 co-curricular learning (CCL) activities, with 1,463 student attendances These activities were designed to equip our students with wellrounded Graduate Attributes. As we continue to offer the best learning experiences for students' whole-person development, we look forward to seeing our students become:
Global Leaders with international perspectives and cultural awareness
Servant Leaders with empathy and caring spirits
Future-shaping Leaders with positive values and global insight
Visionary Leaders with creativity and cultural intelligence
*As the new academic year approaches, LQC has introduced a vibrant mascot to symbolise the dynamic we offers and the leadership potential of our students.

Leadership and character development stand as integral components of holistic personal growth At LQC, we firmly believe in cultivating future leaders equipped not only with professional acumen but also with upright values. In pursuit of this vision, we proudly introduce a tailored initiative for young leaders known as the "Leadership & Character Enhancement Programme." This programme designed to guide university and secondary school students towards excellence through a blend of professional training and engaging learning experiences. The 5-week intensive programme covered topics such as leadership skills, design thinking, presentation skills, data privacy, integrity, accountability, leadership and law. HKBU peer mentors collaborated with secondary students to collectively prepare the final presentation addressing social issues as a culmination of their learning In this cohort, a total of 48 secondary schools nominated over 120 student leaders to join this programme
“The programme has provided me with a precious chance to develop my own strengths. Meanwhile, it has increased my awareness to international and local issues Most importantly, it significantly enhanced my leadership skills I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in this programme”

YIP Man | BSocSc (Sociology)
( May 2024 - September 2024 | 16 HKBU Students )
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
The programme is designed to elevate students' leadership capabilities and foster personal growth. Through a series of training sessions, participants delved into topics such as self-discovery, stress management techniques, effective communication strategies, conflict resolution, and team-building skills. This programme aims not only to broaden horizons but also to encourage students to engage with social issues Participants had the opportunity to visit local social enterprises in Hong Kong and traveled to the United Kingdom (UK) to explore a diverse range of social enterprises, local attractions, and interact with community members. Additionally, they delved into pertinent social issues prevalent in the UK Upon their return, students shared their insights with the HKBU community, formulated action plans, and implemented solutions to address social challenges in Hong Kong
“Going on a study trip to the UK was an experience that I can only describe as enriching The trip was not just an academic learning but a personal journey that introduced me to life lessons and tons of memories. The warmth of the schoolmates I met there were the first of many pleasant surprises, offering me a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar land One of the most thought-provoking parts of the trip was our venture into the awareness surrounding mental handicaps in Cambridge. Through interviews, we discovered a general lack of familiarity with the topic among the UK populace, a finding that spoke volumes about the silent battles waged by those affected and the need for greater public consciousness.”
