The Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Large Venue Production is presented to Hong Kong Dance Company for A Dance of Celestial Rhythms.
This production was complete in every aspect. The imaginative theme of the ancient Chinese Solar Terms, responding to the rhythms of nature and the seasons, was beautifully expressed through the elegant choreography of Yang Yuntao and Xie Yin, which was danced superbly by the entire cast. All the elements. including the visual design, Min Chunhong’s flowing costumes and Kim Chulhwan’s melodious score were skilfully interwoven to form a harmonious whole. The use of fragrances to evoke different moods added a boldly innovative touch.
The “Twenty-Four Solar Terms” is a strict temporal order rooted in traditional Chinese philosophical thought. Following the passage of the seasons, the ancients ploughed in spring, cultivated in summer, harvested in autumn, and stored up food in winter. With the transitions of the solar terms, nature comes alive in glorious colours and fragrances. This spectacular performance captivates the senses with stunning visual, auditory and lighting effects, and an atmospheric olfactory experience. Our journey begins by immersing us in the senses, moving through the cycles of time and life, and ultimately returning to consciousness.

Dust arises not because of light, Nor light fades beneath the dust’s haze.
From ancient times to the present, from birth to death, every tiny particle of life carries its own radiance, breathing with the earth. In nature's symphony, bodies sway, With gentle or tempest's display. Gathered together, their brilliance takes flight. Among us, in the stream of time, the young bodies, breath, sweat, and ignite.

The Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Lighting and Visual Design is presented to 59 Productions for Sam and her Amazing Book of Dinosaurs.
The world of dinosaurs springs off the pages of Sam’s book and comes to life through the brilliantly executed, wildly imaginative visuals of 59 Productions. Along with Sam, we find ourselves immersed in a jurassic paradise where pterodactyls fly past in the sky and the gigantic necks of gentle dinosaurs reach down to us in curiosity. Creating costumes for a ballet about one of the world’s greatest fashion designers is an extraordinary challenge and Jérôme Kaplan rose to it magnificently. City Contemporary Dance Company
The Hong Kong Dance Award for Outstanding Music Composition is presented to Leung Po-wing for Travel of Soul Time AFTER Time.
Mixing traditional Chinese and electronic music, Leung Po-wing’s score played a key role in generating the eerie atmosphere of this spinechilling work. His use of Chinese instruments and hypnotic chanting plunged the audience into the heart of Taoist ritual while the electronic sections and the sound of voices crying out were insidiously sinister and menacing. The consistently powerful rhythms, fast or slow, building then fading, were ideally adapted to inspire and accompany dance.

Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients
Mandy Petty
The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Mandy Petty in recognition of her pioneering work in establishing and developing the art of tap dance in Hong Kong.
When Petty moved to Hong Kong as a young dancer and teacher in 1981, there was little awareness of tap dance among either dancers or audiences here. Today Hong Kong boasts an impressive array of homegrown tap dancers and is a respected part of the international tap community. The city has its own tap company, R&T (Rhythm & Tempo), founded by two of Petty’s students, which not only presents high calibre performances but makes the joy of dancing tap accessible to a wide range of people through classes and community-based projects.
Petty’s contribution to this process, as performer and choreographer, teacher, mentor and role model, has been immeasurable. It’s fair to say that without her, tap in Hong Kong would not be where it is today and might still be in its infancy.
For the past 43 years her passion, warmth and energy have inspired generations of local dancers and helped put this wonderful art form on the map in our dance community – truly a lifetime achievement.

The Hong Kong Academy of Ballet
Mandy settled in Hong Kong in 1981, having spent two years performing in cabaret circuits throughout South East Asia – she was 22 years old. Before her UK departure, she managed to secure some ballet teaching with Mrs Joan Campbell and was told by representatives at the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) that there was the potential to build up Modern Theatre and Tap Dance in Hong Kong. (At that time, tap dance was in a recession so she packed her tap shoes in the shipping box, for use at a later date.) In true Hong Kong fashion, word soon got around that there was a new dance teacher in town, and within her first week, Mandy had secured teaching jazz and national dance with the Hong Kong Academy of Ballet, at their premises above AC Hall at Baptist University. She also connected with the ex-patriat community and got involved with teaching at some of the international schools, as well as working with community groups such as Hong Kong Singers and the Garrison Players. With the guidance of Mrs Joan Campbell, Ms Paula Lau and Ms Candy Lacy-Smith, Mandy soon had a very busy teaching schedule and an equally busy social life!
As the Hong Kong Academy of Ballet transitioned into the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Mandy continued to teach students such as Stella Lau and Wendy Chu and was delighted to offer some elective classes in tap dance on the new programmes. The first tap dance students at HKAPA included Julia Mok (School of Dance –Contemporary) and Jim Chim (Drama). When the Musical Theatre Dance programme at HKAPA was launched in 1991, Tap, Jazz and Musical Theatre became compulsory studies and Mandy was finally able to deliver a progressive training programme in these art forms. She worked as a part-time Lecturer on the programme (with Mohamed Drissi) from 1991, becoming a full-time member of staff in 1995.
It was a wonderful time to be at the Academy, nurturing the students and watching them develop through classes and performances, over their four years of training –2 years on the Diploma and 2 years on the Advanced Diploma. The relatively small S.5(Studio 5), with its wooden floor, will be fondly remembered as Mandy’s Tap Studio. During this time, students were able to perform excerpts of musicals, as well as full-length musicals, in collaboration with students from the schools of Drama and Music. Eventually there were sufficient numbers on the School of Dance programme, for students to perform in their own musicals. Mandy choreographed Pippin in 1999 and then went on to choreograph for two big tap shows – namely 42nd Street (1999) and Crazy for You (2002), joint productions with Hong Kong Singers.
In addition to her work on the full-time programme at the Academy, Mandy also taught tap classes for EXCEL in the evenings. From time to time, she would even perform herself, whilst continuing to choreograph with local community groups (Hong Kong Singers in particular) as well as with specific groups/artists in the commercial sector – concerts, operas and musicals. The list is long!
When the Musical Theatre programme at HKAPA closed, Mandy turned her focus back to the development of younger students, nurturing those on the Foundation Year in the School of Dance, as well as GYDP (2007-2014). Her
full-time employment at the Academy came to an end in 2014, but she continued to work part-time, in various different capacities. In addition to coordinating and teaching Musical Theatre for the EXCEL BTEC programmes, along with electives in jazz and tap for the full-time students, she became Project Manager for the Academy’s 35th Anniversary celebrations, as well as running two symposiums organized by HKAPA – IADMS (2016) and ISPAR (2017).
Currently working as a freelance dance artist, Mandy divides her time between teaching, choreographing and adjudicating. She is a Fellow & Examiner for the ISTD and regularly choreographs for musicals at King George V School, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, Yip’s Children’s Choir and Hong Kong Singers. At times, she even takes to the stage again as a guest performer, most recently in The 10th Hong Kong Tap Festival Gala, organized by R&T, and Wang Ming Chuen’s Cantonese Opera, De Ling and Empress Dowager Ci Xi.
Mandy takes great pride in watching her former students develop into successful performing artists, including her own son, who is now a Musical Theatre performer in the West End. Dance and theatre is what brought her to Hong Kong and hopes to continue sharing her love and passion for the art form for many more years!

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to Sylvia Wu in recognition of her wholehearted devotion to dance over the past six decades, from being a much admired ballerina to one of Hong Kong’s most respected dance teachers, her guidance and encouragement have benefitted thousands of local dance artists.
Wu started ballet training in her teens when dance was not as accessible as now and there were no local professional dance companies. This situation didn’t stop her from pursuing a dance career; she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dance in England and attained the very prestigious Solo Seal Award in the early 1970s. Her signature principal roles in ballets including Giselle, Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, La Sylphide and The Firebird were highly memorable. A reviewer once wrote: “Miss Wu’s portrayal of Giselle was performed with clear detail and close to perfect classical technique” (South China Morning Post, August 1983). There was always a long line of people waiting for Wu’s autograph outside her dressing room, as vividly recalled by the student performers during The Hong Kong Ballet Group’s productions.
Wu was one of very few local dance artists to have worked overseas with a European dance company, an experience which made her an exceptional teacher as she progressed to becoming ballet mistress of City Contemporary Dance Company, then of Hong Kong Ballet and an outstanding coach for international ballet competitions.
Wu also made significant contributions to dance education after she was appointed as a Vocational Examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance in 1999. Ever since then she has been teaching young students tirelessly and nurturing teachers. A Lifetime Achievement Awardee, her story goes on…

Wu's passion for ballet has been with her since she saw a book of photos of the renowned Bolshoi ballerina Galina Ulanova which her elder brother brought back from Beijing when she was a primary student. Thereafter she watched various movies in which Ulanova danced the principal roles in Giselle and Romeo and Juliet When she was about 15 years of age she started taking ballet lessons with Ms. Jean M. Wong. Several years later, Wu pursued further ballet studies in England at the Royal Academy of Dance where she graduated in 1970. Shortly after she returned to Hong Kong she attained the Solo Seal Award. Soon after she started teaching and choreographing for school shows and TV stations.
She danced mainly for The Hong Kong Ballet Group before there were any local professional companies, taking principal roles in classical ballets such as Giselle, Coppelia , The Sleeping Beauty , Swan Lake , Cinderella and La Sylphide.
In 1981, after having danced with Hagen Dance Theatre in West Germany, Wu joined City Contemporary Dance Company where she later became Ballet Mistress. Shortly thereafter she was guest teaching extensively with the Singapore Dance Theatre, Guangdong Modern Dance Company, Hong Kong Dance Company, Hong Kong Ballet and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as well as private dance studios.
Besides working with professional companies, she also gave teaching courses fostering upcoming young teachers.
In 1999, Wu was appointed as a Vocational Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance. She has also acted as adjudicator in many international dance competitions: Hong Kong Schools Dance Festival Competition, Asian Grand Prix International Ballet Competition, Asian Elite Dance Competition, Malaysian International Ballet Grand Prix, Bauhinia Cup Dance Competitionships, Youth Ballet Challenge, Hong Kong Ballet Group Stars Award.
Recently she was presented with a plaque in recognition and appreciation of her dedicated and loyal service as an examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance.
