Welcome Looeyville. Louis-ville. Loo-a-vul. Loo-a-ville. No matter how you say it, I am excited to welcome you to Kentucky and the 2015 Fraternity Communications Association Annual Conference! For the next three days, the historic Seelbach Hilton will be our home. If you didn’t know, this hotel has a storied history. Secret doors, hidden staircases and tunnels provided a safe haven for guests like Al Capone. F. Scott Fitzgerald also wrote portions of “The Great Gatsby” here, with the Seelbach serving as the inspiration for the hotel that hosted Daisy and Tom’s wedding. I hope you get inspired during your time here, too. I encourage you to make the most of our outstanding educational sessions. The Annual Conference Committee worked hard to create a well-rounded curriculum that offers something for everyone—but don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and attend a session that could help you hone a new skill. Our Recognition Banquet Friday evening is also an inspiring event. The Association awards more than 80 honors. These winning submissions can very easily spark a new idea and provide a benchmark for the success of your future work. As always, the people you meet at the FCA Annual Conference can be some of your most valuable resources. We are a group of creative people. Take advantage of all the ideas, thoughts and perspectives running through someone else’s mind. Our Associate Members are here to offer guidance and assistance, too. Unlike those at bigger trade shows, FCA’s Associate Members aren’t all about sales pitches. Pick their brains about a project or problem; they are more than happy to talk you through it. Saddle up and get ready for a great FCA Annual Conference. Here’s to a wonderful three days. Interfraternally,

Ashley Martin, 2014-2015 FCA President Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity

Despite prohibition and various changes in ownership in its 108-year history, Rathskeller continues to be a highly popular venue. This event will have a cash bar available.

A good magazine is one of the best possible means for fostering and sustaining long relationships with your audience. A mediocre or bad magazine is a waste of money. The key is to be read. People do read good magazines. People love good magazines, and maintain relationships with them for decades. Making a good magazine is far from simple, but the guiding principles are simple, and that’s what this talk will be about.

It’s believed to be good luck to wear a hat to the Derby. Since the 1940s, women have worn custom hats—the most popular style being the “Southern Belle.”

The fastest Derby ever was run by Secretariat in 1973 (1:59.4). He is the only horse to have come in faster than two minutes. That same year, he also earned the Triple Crown.

WE SPECIALIZE IN MAKING YOUR VISION AND VALUES SHINE LIKE YOUR BADGE We’re proud to be a partner and advocate for fraternities and sororities. We’re even more proud of how our relationships with more than 20 fraternal organizations have improved member engagement, grown their brands and increased their relevancy across generations of membership. Listening to you, understanding your problems and the needs of your diverse audiences helps us craft the right strategy and creative executions — branding, print, digital, web, or video — TO MAKE YOUR STORY SHINE. We’re happy to share more than a decade of experience working with fraternities and sororities. Want to learn more? Talk to Andy Huston, 317-340-7698 or andy@willowmarketing.com.

Committees Get Involved! Every member is encouraged to serve on an FCA committee. If you are interested in a particular committee, feel free to contact the chairperson or any FCA Board member. Committees will meet at lunch on Friday to begin planning for the year’s activities. For additional detailed information about our committees and awards, check the Handbook of Governance, Policies and Procedures at www.fraternitycommunications.com.

Annual Conference

Midyear Conference

Plans, promotes and conducts a successful Annual Conference, perhaps the most visible and direct benefit to most FCA members.

Plans, organizes and implements the Midyear Conference held in Indianapolis in November.

Awards

Helps members new to FCA gain a working knowledge of the responsibilities and opportunities associated with Greekletter communications.

The Annual Awards Competition fosters healthy competition among members and encourages the exchange of ideas to advance the fraternal movement. The Association strives to recognize excellence in both publications and communications.

Brown Bag Lunches Plans, promotes and conducts the monthly Brown Bag Lunches in Indianapolis by securing a location, selecting a topic and speaker and encouraging attendance through emails and social media.

Marketing Coordinates communication to all member organizations, sponsors and honorary members. Compiles, develops and distributes the monthly e-news (internal), as well as the quarterly printed newsletter “Briefings” (external). Maintains website and oversees social media presence, fostering conversation and networking. Coordinates press releases as needed.

Membership

Sponsors/Associate Members Recruits new associate members and sponsors of FCA conferences and helps them get the most of their membership. Also transitions loyal sponsors to Associate Member status and provides additional benefits.

Varner and Ford Awards Oversees the nomination and selection process of the Varner and Ford Awards presented during the FCA Annual Conference. The Evin C. Varner, Jr. Award (Alpha Sigma Phi) recognizes an outstanding fraternal communicator. This recipient should be one who inspires others by communicating the meaning of fraternity or fraternal cooperation. The Marilyn Simpson Ford Distinguished Service Award (Pi Beta Phi) recognizes members who distinguish themselves through outstanding service to the organization.

Conference Committee The success of this event would not be possible without the hard work of our Annual Conference Committee members.
