Welcome to our nation’s capital! Actually, welcome to Arlington, Virginia — just five short miles of Metro-, Uber, or cab-ride to the heart of Washington, D.C. History lesson time: The U.S. Congress met in various cities for a number of years until they passed the Residence Act in 1790. This act stated that the nation’s permanent seat would be located along the Potomac River and gave President George Washington the power to choose the final site and oversee its development. Washington selected a diamond shape for the city, covering area in the state of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Pierre Charles L’Enfant was engaged to layout the design. L’Enfant, a Frenchborn architect, left the project after, let’s say, creative differences, with landowners and commissioners also preparing the layout. Named obviously in honor of the country’s first president, the area was first named the Territory of Columbia. Columbia is a reference to the explorer Columbus and was used with a patriotic bent during the

Revolution. All projects were to be completed by 1800, and in November of that year, Congress met in Washington for the first time. The namesake, and our nation’s founder, passed away the previous year. In 1846, the land south of the Potomac was returned to Virginia. The above paragraph describes a familiar experience, doesn’t it? The long overdue landmark project needed for a large constituency. A primary leader required cooperation from various entities. A clear vision was established with a firm deadline.

An outside designer brought expertise but felt conflicts with resulting changes. A selection of a name was made filled with nostalgia and the fervor of heritage. A completion wasn’t realized until the first originator was already gone and changes continued for years. Is this the story of D.C. or any one of our projects? The outcome of one has been the furthering of the greatest nation in the history of the world. What will be the outcome of one of our projects? We hope you enjoy the networking, education and recognition provided by your experience at the 2016 Annual Conference.

Interfraternally, Jesse Lyons, 2015-16 FCA president FCA thanks the NIC Foundation for its support in helping fund the educational programming at this conference.

WASHINGTON, D.C. TRIVIA

Before Theodore Roosevelt took office as President, the White House was known simply as the Executive Mansion.

In 1912, Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gifted the city 3,000 cherry trees. In 1915, the U.S. reciprocated with dogwood trees.

The statue that sits atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol Building is called the Statue of Freedom and was installed in 1863.

The word “FUTURE” is misspelled as “EUTURE” on the Lincoln Memorial. It remains visible despite attempts to correct it.

When the Washington Monument opened in 1884, it was the tallest structure in the world until the Eiffel Tower in Paris opened in 1889. 3

Street Sense, our 2016 recipient, was founded in August 2003 after two volunteers, Laura ThompsonOsuri and Ted Henson, approached the National Coalition for the Homeless on separate occasions about starting a street newspaper.

Photography for Communicators

The newspaper features news, editorials, poems and art about homelessness, poverty and other social issues. About 50 percent of the paper is written by homeless and formerly homeless individuals and the other articles come from staff and volunteers, who include journalists, students, advocates and a wide variety of other professionals.

Offsite Event Newseum Educational Session Sponsored by Shelle Design

Complete with buzzers and flashing lights, NewsMania™ lets you show off what you know and win prizes. Afterward, join FCA colleagues for networking at Clyde’s of Gallery Place.

Street Sense began as a Washington, D.C.-based 16-page biweekly street newspaper. Its mission is to offer economic opportunities for people experiencing homelessness in the community by elevating voices and encouraging debate on poverty and injustice.

Street Sense vendors pay 50 cents for each paper to cover publishing costs and then distribute each paper for a suggested donation of $2. Street Sense maintains about 100 active vendors, selling 16,000 papers every other week, with the average vendor earning $45 a day. Vendors choose their own sales locations and can be found in downtown D.C. and some suburbs on busy corners and near Metro stations. Nearly all vendors report a marked improvement in their lives since starting the paper. Such changes include reconnecting with family, developing their writing and communication skills, or simply gaining a sense of pride and self-respect. Street Sense not only offers its vendors a newspaper to sell, but also connects them to other service providers to meet their needs, including finding housing, accessing healthcare or enrolling them in financial management or job training classes. Street Sense is one of about 20 street papers in the United States and more than 90 worldwide. Street papers drastically vary in size and circulation but produce social-issue focused newspapers sold by vendors who make an income on newspaper sales. Visit www.streetsense.org for more information. 9
