It’s the ultimate lurid tale of Hollywood depravity told from the posthumous perpective of a failing screenwriter, who is asked by a has-been film star to write a screenplay for what she hopes would be her comeback, then becomes trapped in a dangerous relationship. In this powerful and sobering film noir, an alcoholic writer goes on a self-destructive bender after missing a weekend getaway with his brother, and turning away from his faithful girlfriend. A chilling look at the devastating effects of alcoholism ahead of its time, The Lost Weekend remains one of the only three films to win Best Picture at both Cannes and the Oscars.
“Bad news sells best because good news is no news,” says Charles Tatum (superbly played by Kirk Douglas), disgraced journalist and the anti-hero of this scathing criticism of sensational journalism. Stumbling upon a hunter who’s trapped after a cave collapse, Tatum is determined to turn the story to his ticket back to big city papers, even if he has to interfere with the rescue mission to his favour. A critical and commercial failure during release, the film has since been embraced as a perceptive and remarkably prescient film about the modern media landscape.

Following the prelude of “Six Moral Tales” in 2019, the French master is again celebrated in this commemorative programme featuring eight of his acclaimed works in the 1980s, reflecting the progressive changes of independent young women who are no longer living under the first-person narration of men. Continued to be fascinated by the romantic entanglements and emotional adventures of young women even in his 60s, Rohmer’s "Comedies and Proverbs" series brings together six of his best. Beginning with a proverb, each film satirically reflects the paradox of his heroines – either dissatisfied with being single or current relationships; or perplexed about destiny, fidelity or freedom. In whimsical spontaneity, his casually sensuous dramas offer a polyphony of ideas contemplating the intriguing feminine thoughts, interweaving romance with socio-economic differences, while underlining the fluidity of modern life. Unlike the Cinderella plot of Hollywood, the Rohmerian romantic comedies are fables that are revelatory of the dilemma of love and ambiguities of life. KIFFS has entered into a long-term collaboration with Italy’s world-renowned Cineteca di Bologna to promote film conservation. With a collection of thousands of films in its archive, Cineteca di Bologna is one of the most recognised centres for preserving world cinematic heritage. Due to present in the 44th edition of HKIFF, some of Cineteca di Bologna’s remarkable collection of restored film classics will now be showcased in this issue’s Cine Fan programme. The four timeless classics in this selection represent the boundless creativity of Italian cinema. From the fascinating silent masterpiece Maciste in Hell by Guido Brignone, who championed pioneering special effects known at the time, to Roberto Rossellini’s Rome, Open City , which spearheaded the revolutionary style of Italian Neorealism, these bold
adventures in filmmaking left an enduring influence on generations of aspiring filmmakers. Inheriting their audacious spirit, Marco Ferreri and Bernardo Bertolucci broke new grounds to articulate their critical social and political commentaries. A biting satire on the matriarchal and religious austerity, The Conjugal Bed nearly put Ferreri behind bars for openly challenging moral conventions. The Spider’s Stratagem , a suspense thriller built around confronting the ambiguity of history, is equally thought-provoking as seen today for its scathing criticism of fascist ideology.

Legendary actor Pagano plays a strongman, who descends into the inferno in order to restore order, a role he reprised 27 times in this long-running film series. The enthralling contrasts between the realistic scenes on Earth and the surrealist ones in Hell, huge cast of demons, and terrifying dragon, fashioned from the most state of the art special effects of the day, all inspired Fellini to get into the movies.

A world cinema landmark that launched the revolutionary style of Italian neorealism, Rossellini’s thrilling drama, simultaneously realistic and melodramatic, has left a trace on every film movement since. Shot amid the ruins of Rome during World War II, the story of brave resistance leaders struggling against the Nazi occupation is a shockingly authentic experience, galvanised by newsreelstyle cinematography. The infamous torture and execution scenes have lost none of their monumental impact today.
Through his tragic death, an anti-Fascist figure is transformed into the legendary hero of a provincial Italian town. Returning for his honouring ceremony, his son becomes entwined in a web of mysteries and ambiguities as he gradually discovers the truth behind his father’s myth. A continuation of his classic The Conformist (1970), Bertolucci transposes Jorge Luis Borges' short story, orchestrating the high tragedy of a thrilling theatrical play into a dazzling microcosm of human society filled with lies and delusion.
