Masumura Yasuzo, the Sensual Provocateur

Celebrating lunacy in the films of Masumura Yasuzo (192486) is, essentially, an exploration of transgressive individuality and political freedom in the realm of sex and eroticism in Japanese cinema.

性和慾望,是增村保造(1924-86)

電影的圖騰。觀之僅見情色,是只緣

身在此山中;若然昭見革命,則已識 廬山真面目。

增村曾留學羅馬電影實驗中心,並據說

接受過安東尼奧尼、費里尼及維斯康堤 的授課。回國後,他重返大映片廠先後

任溝口健二和市川崑的助導,卻不避諱 批評日本電影是「非現實的唯美主義冥

The cinematic adventure of the aesthetic maverick can be traced upon his study at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, where Antonioni, Fellini and Visconti were said to be among his teachers. Returning to Japan to work at the Daiei studio as an assistant to Mizoguchi Kenji and then Ichikawa Kon, he is determined to strip away the sentimentality and lyricism prevailing Japanese cinema, envisioning to reveal the contradictions of life in postwar Japan. Pioneered in his directorial debut, Kisses , his radical fusion of eastern sensibility and western modernity erected a distinctive universe that presents an indictment of social injustice while celebrating liberation of body and soul. Renowned US critic Jonathan Rosenbaum noted how Masumura’s subverted melodramas echoed the critical works by Douglas Sirk and Nicholas Ray. Inspired by his fearless lead in reforming cinema, Oshima Nagisa and Imamura Shohei heralded the 1960s Japanese New Wave. Ranging from eroticism, capitalist satire, anti-war to gender politics, Masumura's canon is encompassing, deliriously enchanting and challenging in equal measure. He specialised in transforming literary works by celebrated authors, including Oe Kenzaburo, Edogawa Ranpo and Tanizaki Junichiro into riveting dramas with his awe-inspiring visual inventiveness. Embodying his lifelong themes of sexuality and independence is the luscious Wakao Ayako, who exquisitely portrayed the new Japanese woman embracing a passion for truth and a daring expression of naked desires – be it a manipulating lady of erotic obsessions, an irresistible femme fatale who awakens blind imperialism, or an angelic military nurse offering her body for consolation. She stands for what meant to be a human, against a repressive and conformist society. “There is no such thing as non-restricted desire. A person who thoroughly discloses his or her desire can only be considered mad… I want to create a mad person who expresses his or her desire without shame, regardless of what people think.” In his dazzling body of 58 films, Masumura’s madness transgresses the restraint of desires, opening up a new dimension to regain sight of our true mind.

What induced Oshima Nagisa to proclaim “a powerful irresistible force has arrived in Japanese Cinema” is Masumura Yasuzo’s debut feature – a moody, unsentimental tale of a fleeting romance. Encountered when visiting their respective fathers in prison, alienated teenage boy and girl bond through their mutual misfortunes, spending a day at the beach on a borrowed motorcycle and on borrowed time. A stripped down narrative imaginatively shot in liberated camera brimmed with swinging moods and impulsive energy, Kisses left a love mark as a forerunner to the Japanese New Wave.

Transfiguring Nobel laureate Oe Kenzaburo’s novel into a more cynical twist befitting the 1960s landscape of leftist student activism, Masumura crafts a noirish drama permeated with scathing commentary on anarchic mistrust and collective deception. His tragic antihero is a desperate young man who, after failing his entrance exams to a prestigious university, pretends to be a freshman and falls in with a group of student activists. Mistaken as a communist agitator by the cops and as a police informer by the students, he suffers at the hands of both sides, while truth becomes the foremost victim.

A delectably wicked satire in splashy colours and kitsch knick-knacks, Masumura’s iconoclastic modernist drama takes aim at the absurdity of capitalist mentality amidst Japan’s post-war economic miracle. In the heat of competition among three caramel corporations, a lowerclass girl who is reshaped into a publicity campaign icon preys on her overnight sensation, while the advertising executive hero salvaging his humanity falls victim to intrigues of corporate espionage. A piercing look at the loss of values that comes with political and social reorientation, as bushido spirit gives way to profit over ideals.

A young woman on a mountaineering expedition is accused of murdering her husband. The facts are clear; the doubt is her true motive for cutting the rope – does she aim to benefit from his life insurance and to be with her supposed lover? More than a courtroom suspense of guilty or not guilty captured under voyeuristic camera, Masumura’s existential melodrama impresses with its extraordinary focus and intensity on a woman’s feelings about love and lust. Beautifully conveying suffering womanhood and transgressive femininity, Wakao Ayako’s stellar performance places her in the pantheon of great actresses.

In celebration of the centennial of his birth in 2021, declared as

the Year of Stanisław Lem in Poland, this tribute series is a recognition to the far-reaching influence of his work on cinema. What elevated Lem as a visionary writer is his ability to go beyond the artificial allure of science fiction, looking beyond fantastical gadgets to examine the ethical and philosophical impacts surrounding the ramifications of scientific innovations have on the human experience. Solaris was adapted by both Andrei Tarkovsky and Steven Soderbergh – in 1972 and 2002 respectively – into introspective meditation on the nature of

f u t u r i s t i c memory. Pilot Pirx's Inquest argued that the flaws of human nature can be superior to the calculated perfections of technology. Far ahead of his time, many of the debates in Lem’s works that provoke intellectual thoughts about the uncertain future are even more relevant today, as our world is rushing towards dehumanised technological solutions in the cyber age. Having lived under the Polish communist regime with his writings subjected to stringent censorship, Lem used his fantastical ideas for stories of otherplanet societies as allegories of totalitarianism, of

Set on a space station orbiting a planet named Solaris, the film follows a psychologist who is tasked to investigate the strange events that left the space station in shambles. He is visited by a replica of his late wife, an apparition created by the planet. Philosophical and quietly absorbing, Tarkovsky’s profound interpretation reaches far beyond the realms of the future, into visions enfolding the mysteries of death and rebirth, vanity and redemption.

Based on The Inquest from Lem’s Tales of Pirx the Pilot novel series, this space adventure thriller sees the titular spaceship pilot facing an inquest to spell out the tragic accident that derailed a space mission with a secret goal to explore the feasibility of the androids replacing their human crew members on spaceflights. Based on a screenplay by Lem himself, Andrzej Wajda’s Layer Cake (1968) is a darkly comedic tale that imagines a world in which organ transplants are so routine that people’s legal identities become twisted in an impossible knot. Beautifully imagined by the iconic Quay Brothers, Mask (2010) tells the tale of a robot assassin who must choose between its mission or its love for its target, entangled with the conscious struggle between order and humanity. Finally, whimsical stop-motion short The Advisors of King Hydrops (2016) by Natalia Brozynska sees the king's advisors desperately compete to manipulate the newborn prince through programming which ends up in absurdity.

Unlike the relatively abstract works later in his career, Krzysztof Kieslowski’s first theatrically released feature film is a quiet social realist drama struggling on real conflict. Set during the communist regime, the docudrama follows an honest party man who has been tasked to build a large chemical factory in his hometown. A fable of innocence lost prefiguring The Decalogue and Three Colours: White (both featuring Jerzy Stuhr), Camera Buff follows a factory worker whose life is transformed by his growing obsession with amateur filmmaking once he acquires an 8mm movie camera to shoot his newborn child. Filip's wellintentioned but naive attempts to mix art and politics as a novice documentarian at his factory end up causing unintended harm, even as his marriage and family life are sacrificed in favour of his consuming hobby. Self-reflexively addressing Kieslowski's own misgivings regarding non-fiction cinema, this ruminative drama also takes us on a Kafkaesque tour of communist Poland's bureaucratic hierarchies.

This feature-length expansion of The Decalogue ’s fifth episode (“Thou shalt not murder”) is a sobering meditation on the ethics of murder and death penalty. The seemingly simple story follows a young boy who senselessly murders a taxi driver, and the idealistic lawyer who seeks to save the murderer’s life on the basis of principle. The dirty sepia-green filter by cinematographer Slawomir Idziak highlights both the story’s bleak nature and the unpalatable look of its setting. Perhaps Kieslowski’s most explicitly political work, the film was said to be integral to the abolishment of the death penalty in Poland.

This feature-length expansion of The Decalogue ’s fifth episode (“Thou shalt not murder”) is a sobering meditation on the ethics of murder and death penalty. The seemingly simple story follows a young boy who senselessly murders a taxi driver, and the idealistic lawyer who seeks to save the murderer’s life on the basis of principle. The dirty sepia-green filter by cinematographer Slawomir Idziak highlights both the story’s bleak nature and the unpalatable look of its setting. Perhaps Kieslowski’s most explicitly political work, the film was said to be integral to the abolishment of the death penalty in Poland.
