厚 的 人 文 關 懷 見 稱。 他 在 印 度 流 行 的 歌 舞 商 業 片 以 外 另 闢 蹊 徑, 專 注 拍 攝 孟 加 拉 語 電影,因協助《錦繡恆河》(1951)勘景而

giant from world cinema's golden age, Satyajit Ray (1921-1992) personified the era's belief in films as a universal medium capable of transcending cultural barriers to express the shared human experience. Ray's humanism was premised upon faith in the individual, struggling with one’s conscience to steer an ethical course between tradition and modernity in difficult times and a changing society: however subjected to doubt, this belief yielded an affirmatory vision that embraces life even as it acknowledges obstacles in its path.

While synonymous with Indian cinema for some, Ray's efforts represented the attempts by Bengali filmmakers like Mrinal Sen or Ritwik Ghatak to produce independent realist dramas known as "parallel cinema" in a country whose movie industry was dominated by commercial, Hindi-language Bollywood musicals. Indeed, Ray was only inspired to make films after encountering Jean Renoir during the production of The River (1951) and seeing Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves (1948). Italian neorealism hugely impacted Ray: the observational style, use of non-professionals, and documentary-like, on-location photography all made their way into his cinema, now painstakingly restored to recreate the near-tactile photographic textures possible on celluloid that are a part of his visual poetry. In a newly independent India, Ray's subject was nothing less than his nation’s development or modernisation: journeys from rural villages to urban centres, women's emancipation, changes in social status or structure, as seen through individuals' lives. True to his Bengali roots and family background, Ray excelled especially in literary adaptations of authors like Tagore or Banerjee. Although he continued making films and received an Honorary Academy Award for his lifetime achievement shortly before his death in his beloved Calcutta, his artistic peak belongs to the ’50s and ’60s: an eloquent humanism that remains a distant beacon for our uncertain, postmodern present.

尤令人難忘。 Ray first became interested in Bibhutibhushan Banerjee's novel about growing up in rural Bengal after illustrating an edition as a graphic designer. The experience of working for Jean Renoir on The River (1951) and a viewing of Bicycle Thieves (1948) eventually prompted Ray to adapt it for his debut. Meticulously storyboarding his shots, Ray and young cinematographer Subrata Mitra filmed intermittently for about three years as he raised funds for the project. The result was a masterpiece that provides a moving account of childhood attuned to the rhythms of nature while celebrating life despite the ominous presence of mortality, underpinned by Ravi Shankar’s sitar music.

Ray teamed up once again with cinematographer Subrata Mitra and musician Ravi Shankar for the sequel to Song of the Little Road that follows young Apu as his family moves to Varanasi and later receives a scholarship to study in Calcutta. Death continues to cast shadows eclipsed by Apu's eagerness to embrace life and see the world. The emotional honesty to Ray's poetic depiction of the mother-son relationship has won him many admirers, from Kurosawa Akira (whose Throne of Blood [1957] lost to The Unvanquished at Venice) to fellow Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen.

In his chronicle of India's modernisation, Ray reserved great sympathy for those in society displaced by changes attributed to the forces of history and progress. The Music Room tells the haunting story of a landlord who proudly holds onto his aristocratic heritage when confronted with the philistinism of the nouveau riche after the zamindari system is abolished, obsessively lavishing his wealth on sumptuous concerts of Indian classical music to the neglects of his family and estate. Acclaimed by Werner Herzog, "It's of phenomenal beauty and Ray really knew how to use music and create a drama around music."

The Music Room

The conflict between life and death takes centre stage in the poignant conclusion to Ray's celebrated Apu trilogy. Now a young adult, Apu finds himself entered into a marriage. When unexpected tragedy strikes, however, Apu turns his back on life until a friend intervenes. The World of Apu , which was screened for the U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961, marked the debuts of Sharmila Tagore (distantly related to Rabindranath) and the late Soumitra Chatterjee, both of whom would go on to star in numerous films by Ray.

Madhabi Mukherjee stars, while the movie also marks the debut of Jaya Bhaduri (as the housewife's young sister-in-law), later a Bollywood sensation and wife of Amitabh Bachchan.

His artistic genius for black satirical comedy was fully recognised by the time he was 40, garnering most of the major awards the film world has to offer with his directorial debut

(1981), and hits like When Father was Away on Business (1985) and Time of the Gypsies (1988), which are celebrated for their Balkanist farce marked by slapstick and subversive cynicism. Underground (1995), his famously inflammatory take on Yugoslav history remains his crowning achievement, making him one of the few auteurs to have won the Palme d’Or twice. Yet, baffled by the embittered battles with his fellow Bosnian and Serbian countrymen, he once announced to quit filmmaking, and later disconnected himself, never setting foot in Sarajevo again.

Practising hypnosis that fails on rabbits, he succeeds in anesthetising himself by believing “Every day I’m getting better and better”, and finally comes into his manhood through his romantic infatuations with young prostitute Dolly Bell. A bittersweet coming-of-age tale interweaving the political uproar of 1960’s Sarajevo, Kusturica’s semi-autobiographical debut manifests a sardonic sensibility that defines his dazzling directorial style, recognised by Venice as Best First Work.

Shifting away from bleakly nostalgic satire, Kusturica draws a parallel with Luis Buñuel’s Los Olvidados , conjuring surrealist vision to capture the delirious joy and desperation of the Yugoslavian gypsies under rollicking accordion music and eclectic imagery. Told through the consciousness of a six-year old boy, Kusturica’s surprising Palme d’Or winner is an affectionate social satire offering a revealing glimpse of Yugoslavia’s tumultuous political transition after breaking up with the Soviet Union. The twist of fate for young Malik comes when he is told that his father is “away on business”, a euphemism for being sent to a labour camp for his alleged Stalinist sympathies – or rather, his promiscuity. In his sleepwalking, Malik shows his remarkable talent for interrupting his father’s licentious acts, and his spirit as adventurous as his father’s libido.

Crafting his magical realism onto brash Arizona landscapes, Kusturica’s first and only American film embraces a liberating lunacy that dares the Hollywood conventions of cookie-cutter filmmaking. A reworking of Fredric Brown’s murder mystery novel The Screaming Mimi , the film follows an American writer who becomes obsessed with chasing a serial murderer after witnessing one of the attacks. It’s easy to see how Argento’s immensely entertaining, psychologically gripping and sometimes wickedly funny whodunit is a clear influence on the slasher genre that Hollywood integrated into its mainstream years later.

After witnessing the murder of his neighbour, jazz pianist Marcus becomes caught up in the killer’s twisted game of cat-and-mouse. Before turning into a victim, he must trace the clues to expose the murderer. Made during the height of the giallo craze in Italy before Suspiria , Deep Red exemplifies the gripping horror contrived by the genre’s typical elements – the obsessive hero, the methodical murderer, sex-ploitation and a surprising comic touch. Credited with popularising the Italian giallo genre, Dario Argento’s directoral debut, the first film of his acclaimed Animal Trilogy, earned him the reputation as the Italian Hitchcock. A reworking of Fredric Brown’s murder mystery novel The Screaming Mimi , the film follows an American writer who becomes obsessed with chasing a serial murderer after witnessing one of the attacks. It’s easy to see how Argento’s immensely entertaining, psychologically gripping and sometimes wickedly funny whodunit is a clear influence on the slasher genre that Hollywood integrated into its mainstream years later.

After witnessing the murder of his neighbour, jazz pianist Marcus becomes caught up in the killer’s twisted game of cat-and-mouse. Before turning into a victim, he must trace the clues to expose the murderer. Made during the height of the giallo craze in Italy before Suspiria , Deep Red exemplifies the gripping horror contrived by the genre’s typical elements – the obsessive hero, the methodical murderer, sex-ploitation and a surprising comic touch. Presenting a compelling narrative in striking visual compositions and a music score by Goblin, Argento elevates the genre to the peak of popularity and draws his cult followers – among them Quentin Tarantino, who “was rattled to the bone” as a teenager.
