Student Learning Results
In addition to providing a rigorous course of study, HKIS targets student growth in six domains: Academic Excellence, Spirituality, Character Development, Self-Motivated Learning, Contributing to Society, and Chinese Culture.
Accreditation
Hong Kong International School is a member of the East Asia Regional Council of Overseas Schools and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
School and Community
Hong Kong International School, a private coeducational day school, serves students (Grades PK-12) in the international community who seek an American-style college preparatory education in a Christian setting. Students come from business, government, and professional families. Out of a total enrollment of 2,642 students the high school serves 768 students of whom 49% are from the United States, 8% are from Hong Kong and 43% represent 30 other nationalities.
Students
HKIS enjoys a diverse student body committed equally to academic excellence and service around the world. Distinguished by their third culture outlook, HKIS students are noted for being active in the community, eager to achieve, as well as ambitious and entrepreneurial. The class of 2013 consists of 189 students and boasts 19 Commended and one Semi-Finalist National Merit Scholars. Nearly 100% of a typical class pursues tertiary study, 80% of them at colleges and universities in the United States, of whom 88% earn acceptance to Phi Beta Kappa institutions.
Faculty
HKIS attracts and retains an outstanding faculty, 73% of whom holds advanced degrees, by providing a vibrant work environment and exceptional professional development opportunities. The average tenure is 8.75 years. The faculty-student ratio is 1:9.
School Calendar
The school operates under a 180-day calendar, divided into two semesters. The first semester begins the third week of August and concludes mid-January. The second semester begins the third week of January and concludes mid-June.
Interim
Interim is an annual 7-8 day off-campus experiential service and learning program for all four high school grade levels. Through its cultivation of communication and leadership skills, self-awareness and self-reliance, compassion and cross-cultural understanding, the program promotes student growth relative to the six Student Learning Results. The Interim experiences form an integral part of the high school curriculum, and annual participation is a graduation requirement for all students.

Hong Kong International School computes a student’s Grade Point Average on a 4-point scale, using only grades earned at HKIS in grades 9-11. HKIS neither weights grades nor uses percentage equivalents of letter grades. HKIS does not report rank in class.
Counseling Practice & HKIS Policy on Early Plans
Given the rigor of the AP curriculum at HKIS and the demands of the high school experience generally, HKIS counsels its juniors and seniors to take no more than three AP courses a year; exceptions may be allowed for exceedingly motivated, organized and skilled students. HKIS limits the number of college applications that it will support
and counsels its students to use their allowance deliberately and wisely. In addition, HKIS limits the number of early plans to which students may apply; they may apply to one early decision and one early action or two early action plans. HKIS students understand that Early Decision is a global decision, and, should they be admitted under an early decision agreement, they must withdraw applications from all other institutions. The students are also aware that their college counselors will inform all other colleges to which applications have been submitted of those decisions. In compliance with NACAC Best Practices, HKIS will also disclose to colleges and universities any disciplinary infractions that result in out-of-school student suspensions. All HKIS seniors complete the FERPA agreement online through Naviance.
Academic Program 2011-2012
To earn a diploma, a student must earn a minimum of 22 credits distributed as follows: English (4), Mathematics (3), Science (2), Social Studies (2.5), Asian Studies (0.5), Religion (1), Fine Arts (1.5), P.E. (2), and electives sufficient to complete the 22 credits. Students must also complete an Interim experience and participate in a comprehensive counseling curriculum for each year of residency at HKIS. In the final two years of high school, each student must write and defend a Junior Research Paper and undertake and present a Senior Project.
