Treat Yo’ Self Need a special treatment for your body and soul? We check out some of the best spa treatments in town.

The Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong The Basics: In Hong Kong’s pollution-filled, fastpaced environment, it’s not easy to keep your skin looking healthy and your body free of kinks and knots. When you’re in need of a serious pampering sesh to revitalize your tired mind, body and soul, there’s nowhere better to head than the plush Four Seasons Spa. Situated in Central but far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, this serene oasis is the ultimate relaxation retreat in the city, combining expertly trained therapists with beautiful facilities and top-tier natural spa ingredients to deliver one of the best spa experiences you’ll find in Hong Kong. The Experience: I arrived at the Four Seasons Spa to trial their brand new Chi Mineral Therapy, which employs natural ingredients to improve blood circulation, ease joint pain and decrease swelling. The treatment began with a foot bath which was heavily scented with cinnamon, ginger and clove. Then I was led into the steam room where a thick layer of Dead Sea mud was massaged onto my body by the female therapist. I was expecting this part to be somewhat uncomfortable or for the mud to have an unappetizing smell, but was relieved to find it just the opposite. The mud had a lubricating effect so it felt like an oil massage, while the natural musk—for lack of a better word—of the Dead Sea

mud combined with the floral fragrances from the treatment room made for a surprisingly pleasant scent. After washing off the mud in a monsoon rain shower, the second half of the treatment consisted of a mineral oil massage where the confident, experienced strokes of the masseuse induced me straight into a relaxed slumber in the comfortable treatment room, with the oversized windows framed by lush green scenery. The Takeaway: After the two-hour treatment, I felt completely detoxified, relaxed and rejuvenated—but it wasn’t time to head home just yet. A therapist led me into the rest and relaxation area, which encompasses a vitality lounge, chiwater Jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. After a soak in the huge Jacuzzi bubbling ferociously with highpowered jets, I ended the relaxing afternoon with a lie-down in the vitality lounge with my own personal TV, complimentary nuts, dried figs and apricots, and fresh-pressed juice. I left the spa feeling completely rested and with softer, more youthful looking skin, which still felt smooth to the touch over a week later. Leslie Yeh Chi Mineral Therapy, Mon-Thu $4,000, Fri-Sun $4,500. Four Seasons Hotel Hong Kong, 8 Finance St., Central, 3196-8888.

Take a dip at SkyCity Marriott’s pool after your treatment

Quan Spa at Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel The Basics: Sometimes when you crave a spa retreat, you are actually more in need of a break from the madness of the city. The Hong Kong SkyCity Marriott Hotel is nestled in Chek Lap Kok near the airport, but it feels more like a resort hotel rather than one of those dingy, gloomy airport hotels elsewhere. Catering to both travelers and locals, the boutique Quan Spa offers a tranquil setting for visitors to rejuvenate and heal from the tiring commute and the urban stress. The Experience: This summer, I checked out Quan Spa’s new Vitamin Booster treatment. The treatment enticed and awakened all of my senses by starting with a 30-minute Fruity Glow Scrub which gently buffed away my dull, dry skin using a blend of mangoes, strawberries, sugar and essential oil. The exfoliation was aromatic and very mouthwatering—I felt like I was being dressed up as a delicious tropical dessert. After the scrub I had a quick shower, and I could already feel my body all smoothed up and moisturized by the antioxidantpacked strawberries. The treatment continued with the 60-minute Aroma Fusion Body Massage, which combined Swedish, holistic and lymphatic drainage massage styles. The massage was gentle yet very to the point, melting away the tension in my muscles after a long week at work. The treatment was so relaxing it sent me straight into sweet dreams halfway through.

The Takeaway: The 90-minute treatment gave my skin a much needed boost of radiance and was extremely soothing for the mind, the body and the soul, especially when you realize you’re literally kilometers away from your troubles in the city. After the treatment, I was led to a relaxation area, where I enjoyed a specially made strawberry and mango yogurt smoothie and some more fresh fruits to echo the summery treatment, and satisfy my cravings for some sweet treats. If you need an almost-out-oftown experience, SkyCity Marriott is the place to be. Xavier Ng Vitamin Booster Treatment available until Sep 30, $1,280 for one, $2,180 for two. The Oriental Spa at Landmark Mandarin Oriental The Basics: The 25,000-sq.-ft. Oriental Spa is no ordinary spa experience: They’ve got vitality pools, herbal saunas, Hammam steam rooms, more unique splash rooms, and of course, you’re treated to the five-star hotel service expected of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental. The Experience: We recently tried the new 60-minute Natura Bissé Citrus Boost facial, which uses products from the Spanish spa brand that are packed with Vitamin C, to help wake up tired skin and achieve a brighter, more even complexion. It starts with a brief aromatherapy exercise to relax you from your fingertips to your toes, after which your face is cleansed and toned, and a mild fruit-based peel is applied to gently exfoliate. During this, you’ll get treated to a relaxing head and scalp massage. An incredibly moisturizing algae-based soft mask is then applied, and as you wait for it to set, your therapist rubs down your shoulders and arms, by which time you’re more than likely to have dozed off. The Takeaway: As you open your eyes to the energizing scent of citrus, you’ll feel your skin is extra soft and supple with a heavily moisturized finish. Evelyn Lok Natura Bissé Citrus Boost Facial, Mon-Thu $1,500; Fri-Sat $1,650. The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, The Landmark, 15 Queens Rd., Central, 2132-0188.

Sense of Touch The Basics: For a convenient de-stressing session with your other half, it’s hard to top a two-and-a-half-hour couples’ treatment at Sense of Touch’s Central day spa. At the top of the five-story spa is the Double Martini treatment room, which features two massage beds, a private bathroom with shower, and wooden baths for him and her. The Experience: Starting with a 60-minute massage, the therapists settle you in with light stretching motions before diving into an oil massage, concentrating on releasing deep muscle tension or detoxing your lymph nodes. After flipping over, an Elemis sensitive radiance facial for her helps tone and moisturize with a papaya peel cream and a soothing mask, while he gets treated to a simple but effective deep cleansing facial. It all wraps up with a relaxing 30-minute soak in the side by side wooden tubs, featuring Aromatherapy Associates bubble bath products. The Takeaway: For a quick pick-me-up, this couples’ session offers the most freedom of all of the spa’s offerings as you select the treatment according to your own needs. For a more romantic mini getaway option, you may want to check out the Tseung Kwan O or Repulse Bay spa branches. Evelyn Lok 2.5-hour Couple’s Double Martini Ritual, $3,480. Tir dis Beauty trends are ever-changing: To stay on track, we round up the city’s newest and quirkiest treatments. By Evelyn Lok and Jessica Wei

Ice Queen Wanna beat the summer heat while looking younger and prettier? Sci-fi movies have shown us people can get cryogenically frozen to wake up decades later and still retain their same youthful self. While it’s still too early to pop open those cryonic chambers, you can seek out the health and beauty benefits of the cold at Hong Kong’s first and only cryotherapy center, Polaris Wellness, which uses the power of sub-zero temperatures in its treatments and facials. We recently got to try a full body treatment, which involves standing for three minutes, naked, in a -130°C nitrogen gas fridge. As the cold air enters the full body chamber—with your head sticking out— you quickly realize it’s no mere shopping mall chill, but an intense piercing cold that develops into sharp pins and needles all over the body.

Thank goodness for the uplifting therapist, who took our mind off the excruciating three minutes. The best feeling is when you hobble out of the machine to thaw and your blood circulation rapidly increases to warm yourself and your body creates feel-good endorphins and extra collagen for a smoother, firmer appearance. Our takeaway? The feeling of conquering the cold definitely gets addictive.

Single session $900 ($550-810 with membership). Cryofacials and localized cryotherapy also available. Polaris Wellness, 10/F, Lee Theatre Plaza, 99 Percival St., Causeway Bay, 2446-6163, polaris-wellness.com

Quench Your Thirst New to Hong Kong to quench the thirst for dehydrated and tired bodies is REVIV Wellness, which brings a whole new range of hydration treatments done via IV drip packed with fluids, vitamins and antioxidants. It can help quell concerns of fatigue, lack of sleep, weight gain and general malaise directly from the inside, but can also improve the health of your hair, skin and nails. Founded by A&E doctors who have 40 years of experience in treating dehydration-related health problems, the brand touts safe intravenous hydration therapies for different goals. Are you an athlete who needs to replenish nutrients? Suffering from jet lag or muscle aches from traveling? Need a detox from pollution and free radicals from regular city living? Or simply looking for a brightening, youthful glow? An initial consultation will help you determine which treatment best suits you. We recently gave the Megaboost Vitamin Infusion a try, which replenishes your system with essential minerals and vitamins and flushes the body of toxins. While the needle and cannulation part is never something people look forward to, the experienced nurse Sarah makes the procedure quick and painless. You’re then led to the lounge where you can comfortably let the IV infusion run its course.

We didn’t notice any immediate perks in energy, but for the next few days we noted that we were regular, with plenty more trips to the bathroom, and we were less lethargic in the mornings. A session takes as little as 29 minutes, and intra-muscular booster shots (where the effects are less immediate) only 10 seconds, so you could go for a lunch hour pick-me-up and still return reenergized in plenty of time.

Vitamin infusions start from $1,798; intra-muscular booster shots from $298. REVIV Wellness, Suite 2202, 1 Duddell St., Central, 2530-9882, revivme.com/hong-kong

Breath of Fresh Air While oxygen bars and flavored oxygen rose as a trend in the mid-noughties, Hong Kong spa stalwart Spa Beauté Par Zai has been pumping their most faithful clients an extra concentrated type of oxygen for therapeutic purposes via its Oxy Essential treatment for the last 15 years—and the people who love it, love it a lot. Combining the benefits of a higher oxygen content than the outside air, and the soothing effects of aromatherapy, the Oxy Essential boasts benefits ranging from a cure for a hangover to shinier hair. Some go for a full 40 minutes when they need to unwind, some take a weekly session, and some even take a quick hit of flavored air every day. The owner, Nigar Qureshi, who has been a practicing aromatherapist for twenty years (as well as a professional makeup artist), takes five minutes every day. The claim is that the intake of more oxygen (the air in our atmosphere is about 21% oxygen; the usual non-medical oxygen concentrator produces 40% oxygen) helps remove toxins from the bloodstream, thus strengthening one’s immune system, clearing the complexion, easing migraines and hangovers, and leaving you refreshed. As for us? After 40 minutes huffing peppermint-laced oxygen, the session left us feeling relaxed—although that might have been from the mellowing effects of peppermint and the time spent reclined in a spa bed rather than the oxygen itself.

$480 for 30 minutes, Spa Beauté Par Zai, 12/F, Sea Bird House, 22-28 Wyndham St., Central, 2524-1272, spabpz.com

Its newest spa, MI XUN Spa, is erected where the mulberry garden of the Daci Temple once sat, retaining much of the original Western-Sichuan architecture. Each therapy in the signature series, MI XUN Autographs, is designed to cater to a particular wellness goal. Your Skin Needs

A KOREAN-STYLE PICK-ME-UP Tired of loose, sagging skin? Ditch the surgical option and discover why Korean-style thread lifting—beats a facelift any day. Getting facelifts to counteract sagging and remove wrinkles may be nothing new, but it’s always been a complex procedure. But in the past few years, there’s been a new trend from Korea that has revolutionized the treatment, offering clients a quicker, less invasive and less expensive way to lift, tone and redefine the contours of their face. Korean thread lifting is a new technology that leaves your skin firmed and tightened, and in a totally non-invasive way. This brand new technology inserts biocompatible threads under your skin, lifting and supporting it at the subcutaneous level and eliminating sagginess caused by aging. Compared to the traditional version of thread lifting, the new Korean technology uses threads made of Polydioxanone, or PDO. What makes PDO better than the traditional threads? “15 or 20 years ago, when people were doing thread lifting they used different materials, such as gold. It gives the lifting effect, but the problem is that when you use that kind of material, your body doesn’t absorb it,” says Dr. Winnie Mui of Dr. Lauren Bramley & Partners. “Initially it may be all right, but over time issues and complications will start to arise. One of the main things we like about it is

that it’s biocompatible, meaning that your body will absorb it.” PDO threads are made of the same materials as surgical sutures. When they’re placed under your skin, your body slowly absorbs the thread and forms collagen around it, with results lasting from around a year to a year and a half. Other than PDO, there’s also a new generation of threads from France and Holland. Composed of PLLA (polyllactic acid) and Lactide/Glycotide cones, these threads provide 360-degree anchor and reduced the risk of migration or extrusion. This non-invasive, non-permanent approach is what’s making Korean thread lifting so popular. “Years ago, when people were using Thread Lifting they had to go to a plastic surgeon and had to be put under general anesthesia,” says Dr. Mui. “The current procedure is an in-clinic procedure, and is quite fast and safe because it’s just superficial.” Where’s the most popular area for the procedure? “The lower third of the face, especially along the jawline, starts to sag a bit as you get older,” says

Dr. Mui: But that’s not the only area where Thread Lifting is effective. The forehead, under-eye area, neck, and even the upper arms are commonly treated with Korean thread lifting, with different kinds of threads used for different areas. Recovery is also a lot quicker than surgery, too. “Patients will experience pain in the treated area for the first two to three days. But with pain medication, some patients even fall asleep during the procedure,” says Dr. Mui. Wait about a week for the swelling to go down, and you’ll really start seeing the effects kick in, with tighter, more contoured skin that will have you feeling younger than ever.

Ten Feet Tall The Basics: Ten Feet Tall is the brainchild of Dragon-i creator Gilbert Yeung, so it’s safe to suppose it’s not your run-of-the-mill local foot massage parlor. As well as foot massage and pedicure, they also do nail art, full-body pressure point massage and aromatic oil massage for pampering beyond the feet. The Experience: Entering Ten Feet Tall from the bustle of Queen’s Road, my mind was calmed right away. The two-floor location is super spacious, with surroundings inspired by Caribbean-island chic—picture white beach houses with wood fittings and cabanas. I tried the “Why Not” foot plus neck and shoulder massage: My feet were first bathed in a bucket of aromatic bubbly water, after which two therapists worked simultaneously on my feet (with coconut oil-infused lotion),

and my neck and shoulders for the next 50 minutes. Cold-pressed juices and teas are served following your massage for a full cleansing experience. The Takeaway: The massage was on the strong side, so if you can take the pressure then Ten Feet Tall is perfect for you. Talk to your therapist if you prefer a gentler approach. My feet felt rather light after the massage, and my skin was much smoother. With a few private or semi-private rooms, the place could provide a great little vacation for your feet during lunch breaks (if you have the luxury of long lunches), or with family on weekends. Jean Louis David – Keratin Treatment The Basics: There are many glitzy, high-end hair salons in Hong Kong that claim they’ll give you an A-list experience along with their styling, but few really deliver. Situated right in the heart of Central, Paris-born Jean Louis David helms a place that follows through on its promise, from the moment you walk through the doors into the contemporary, state-of-the-art salon interiors decked out in white. The Experience: With my frizzy locks a bit out of control from the Hong Kong heat and humidity, I popped in to this gorgeous salon to try their signature Super-Smooth Keratin treatment, which is meant to leave your hair instantaneously silk-smooth and frizz-free. The keratin treatment begins with a shampoo (and mini facial and hand massage) to make sure your hair is primed to take on the keratin, which you’ll need to leave in your hair for at least 72 hours without shampooing in order to maximize the longevity of the treatment. It took less than 30 minutes to comb the keratin lotion through my hair, which was then whipped

to Hong Kongers for over two decades. The range of treatments is just as diverse as the customer base, and you can be sure to find a treatment that suits your needs and budget, from hair styling to beauty advice and skin treatments. Once you’ve achieved a new ‘do, pick up a basket of their premium hair products to maintain that fresh salon look. 8/F, VIP Commercial Centre, 116-120 Canton Rd., Tsim Sha Tsui, 2507-2268, hair-corner.com

Kim Robinson Can’t find a hairdresser who can work wonders on your Asian hair? Call on Australian-born celebrity stylist Kim Robinson, who’s known for his expertise in just that. His signature is the dry cut technique, creating a style to match the natural flow of your hair, which he’s used on A-list clients such as Michelle Yeoh, Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li. But even if Kim isn’t around (or you don’t feel like shelling out over $7000 for a haircut that’ll grow out in a few months), you’ll still feel like a celeb: Each client is led into a private room, with an adjacent private hairwashing station. I was given a signature dry cut by Jason Chan, one of their top stylists,

who clipped off the last dyed strands of a balayage that had overstayed its welcome, into a short layered bob. The difference between a dry cut and a traditional wet one is not just in technique, it’s in experience: I was watching myself transform, as each strand was clipped and settled back into its natural place. At no moment did I have to guess how the cut would look, like one does when they only have a mass of wet hair togo on; I could see it with my own eyes. into shape by Alfio, an expert stylist hailing from Italy. It’s clear that the stylists here work off experience and intuition, and Alfio’s cut was one of the quickest yet one of the best I’ve received in Hong Kong. As for the keratin, it worked instantaneously, leaving my hair silky smooth with not a touch of frizz in sight. The Takeaway: After a few days my hair has remained as straight and silky as the day I left the salon. I would recommend keratin to anyone who struggles with straightening and blow-drying their hair in the mornings. The hardest part is staying away from bobby

pins, clips or hair ties for the first three days as you need to give time for the keratin to lock in and any shaping of the hair may crease the strands. I’m completely blown away by the results and will definitely be heading back for my next cut and styling touch-up. With its stunning white interiors and team of highly experienced hairdressers, Jean Louis David is one of the few places in the city I can honestly say is worth the premium. Xtreme Lashes Eyelash Extensions The Basics: Xtreme Lashes is one of the foremost eyelash extension experts in the city, attracting clients willing to spend a bit more for the security and comfort of a world-class salon and carefully vetted procedures. The Experience: Xtreme Lashes prides itself on using safe and hygienic processes for applying extensions that keep lashes looking natural and undamaged. My session began with a one-on-one consultation to take me through the choices available. I drifted off into slumberland within the

first 15 minutes as the technician began applying extensions to each individual lash. The one-and-a-half-hour process was completely pain-free and quite peaceful, with only the soft spa music and gentle whirring of the tools to be heard. I woke up to a stunning set of luscious long lashes. The Takeaway: I was amazed at how light the lashes felt and, after a few days, I hardly noticed them at all. I also loved how there was no maintenance involved to keep them looking full and fantastic—all I had to do was make sure to stay away from oil-based face cleanser and give them a quick swipe with the brush (provided) in the mornings to even out the strands. The extensions last as long as the duration of your natural eyelash growth cycle, so you’ll have to head back after about six to eight weeks. Browhaus The Basics: Brow trends change fast: in the last five years, we’ve gone from Cara Delevingne’s fierce, bushy arches to the lighter and boxier brows of Korean soap stars; now, everyone is looking for full yet natural-looking brows. But brows are fickle: they can be overplucked, too wispy, sparse or patchy. Browhaus, Asia’s leading brow salon with locations from Singapore to New York, finds the potential in your brows and painstakingly etches realistic-looking hair strands along the browbone with their unique brow embroidery technique for results that last up to 18 months with six-month tune-ups. The Experience: Set up in a series of circuslike tents, each one a private room, Browhaus is sleek, modern yet fun. After signing up and being led into one of the tents, Tracy,

Browhaus’s main embroidery therapist, carefully examined my eyebrows, isolating the tail, marking where the inner eyebrows should start and my peak arch (hey, little dude! There you are! Where’ve you been hiding?), and made her recommendations based on my face shape and personal preferences. When we finalized the design, she etched out the shape on my eyebrows, cleaned up stray hairs, applied some numbing cream and prepared the color. We decided on a mix of ash blonde (darker than you think) and medium brown (way darker than you think), and went to town with a tiny razor, creating small incisions just below the first layer of skin and then going over with color. Minimally painful, but definitely bizarre-feeling: You can hear the process, and feel it only in texture—but it doesn’t actually hurt, and it’s done in half an hour. The Takeaway: I was given a combo of antibacterial drops and a moisturizer

(named Build and Fix, respectively), specific instructions for aftercare and an invitation to come back within six months for a tune-up. My brows were well-defined and, remarkably, three dimensionally natural. We had decided on a gentle arch, a slightly longer tail, and an inner eyebrow that protruded slightly into my T-zone, pulling my wide set eyes together and making them seem larger. The brows look great, and feel only a little bit itchy only a little bit of the time, which should go away, but the best part? Saying goodbye to the eyebrow pencil. Super-Bowl

Stars

A lot has been said about superfoods in the last few years, and for the most part they should be approached with a degree of skepticism. There’s no one grain that’s going to change your life, and the nutrients different foods provide must be supported by a balanced diet in order to work their magic. But with a healthy mix of whole grains, legumes and vegetables in your daily diet, you won’t just be super-fooding—you’ll be super living. Here are a few accessible and delicious ingredients to get you started. By Jessica Wei

Kale Benefits: The reigning queen of all foods deemed super, kale is a nutritional powerhouse. High in iron, fiber, calcium, and vitamins A, C and K, low in calories and super low (as in… zero) fat, kale aids in digestion (that’s the fiber), encourages natural blood clotting (vitamin K), helps process protein (vitamin A), and helps prevent bone loss (calcium). And the best part? It’s super hearty, easy to cook with, and keeps better as leftovers than any other leafy green— in fact, rather than wilting and getting soggy, kale holds its shape and gets more flavorful the next day. Kale That Won’t Fail: Perfect for weekday lunches and quick dinner sides, keep a giant kale salad in the fridge (there is no “small bunch of kale,” as farmers will tell you): Toss in your favorite dressing, mix in some beans for a protein boost or some parmesan and orzo with a spritz of lemon and olive oil for a light, fresh side dish. Don’t forget to massage the leaves and small stems with olive oil and salt to soften them. Too lazy to cook? Try this Green Goddess salad from The Restaurant by the Kinnet ($120).

Corn Benefits: One of the ancient grains of the Americas, corn might seem like a surprising superfood given that it’s so commonly associated with backyard barbecues, tortillas, and cornbread. But no matter how you shuck it, this highly versatile grain is also super nutritious: It contains protein, iron, vitamin B6, manganese and packs a wallop of soluble fiber. Corn, Reborn: At your next barbecue, forgo the fatty butter and drizzle some olive oil and sprinkle some spices on your corn instead. Are you crisps-addicted but concerned about sodium and hydrogenated oil? Make some homemade popcorn: coat the bottom of a pot with canola oil, throw in some dried corn kernels, cover and wait for the sizzle and pop. Take the pot off the stove when the popping dies down, sprinkle with salt and spices (we love cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar for light sweetness; nutritional yeast for a cheesy treat) and enjoy your healthy movie snack.

Sardines Benefits: These little swimmers carry with them a whopping 338% of our daily recommended serving of vitamin B12 (which produces red blood cells, builds immunity, and fights degenerative diseases. B12 can also be easily depleted by birth control pills, antibiotics, liver diseases and stress, leading to B12 deficiency. Trust us, you want more B12 on your team), 44% of your daily recommended bone-building vitamin D, 60% of your omega-3 fats (for heart control, improved cholesterol, and shiny, shiny hair) and 45% of your daily protein requirement in a single tin. Sardine Dreams: Buy sardines canned in heart-healthy olive oil, and those packed in water if you’re concerned about fat. For dinner, mix in a can of sardines in pasta and veggie and sprinkle with lemon juice, or have an all-out umami party with sardines, shiitake mushrooms, chopped tomato, eggplant and spices, and serve over a bed of mixed grains. For a quick and filling lunch, mix sardines with avocado and smear on a slice of wholegrain toast.

Red Rice Benefits: Sure, brown rice is a no-brainer, with all its fiber, antioxidants and natural wholegrain goodness, but red rice is like brown rice with a jetpack, with three times the insoluble fibre per serving, 90% of your daily value of manganese (a mineral that promotes healthy bones and skin), and tons of antioxidants. Plus it’s pretty and it looks so healthy! People in your lunch canteen will think you’re Gwyneth Paltrow or something. Red Rice Ready: Cooked in the same way as brown rice, red rice can be used a substitute for brown or white rice, tossed into a health bowl with lightly sauteed or fresh veggies and beans or lentils, or mixed into a salad for small hit of protein and some chewy bite.

Lentils Benefits: These tiny but mighty legumes are positively stuffed with both soluble and insoluble fiber and protein, and 90% of your daily recommended folate, a B vitamin which helps repair and promote cell and tissue growth, linked to everything from fetal development and promoting sperm viability to reducing the risk of stroke. Just one cup of these guys will keep you full for hours while feeding you the nutrients you need, at only 230 calories.

Pencil in Lentils: Buy lentils in their dried form rather than canned— they’re more delicious, and don’t have the chemicals and preservatives added in the canning process. You can also infuse flavor straight into the lentils by cooking them in milk or vegetable broth. And once you cook them, you’ve got a world of possibilities: Make a hearty lentil soup in the winter, experiment with Indian dal, mix them into your next stir fry, make a lentil dip and serve with pita chips, or swap out ground beef with spiced lentils in a shepherd’s pie for Meatless Monday.

Alfalfa Sprouts Benefits: A super cute way to beef up your sandwich and top your salads, alfalfa sprouts (and other microgreens) are super concentrated natural sources of calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, iron and folate, but also contain a pretty significant quantity of phytoestrogen which, while not recommended for pregnant women, is extremely helpful for balancing hormones for premenopausal women. Sprouts also help regulate bad cholesterol while boosting good cholesterol. Sprout, Don’t Pout: Alfalfa sprouts can be added to virtually any dish to boost its nutritional value, from stuffing it in a falafel or a pita with hummus and tomato, topping a salad, mixed into a health bowl with shredded carrots and cabbage, chickpeas and avocado, mixed into your favorite dip or soup, blended into a smoothie, or sneaked into a sandwich to replace lettuce. Try this sprout and quinoa salad from MANA! $78 for a small box, $130 for a large.

Water Benefits: It may seem like a no-brainer, but most of us just don’t get enough water. Water has so many proven benefits: It helps us deal with the hotter climate, it keeps skin looking fresh and smooth, aids in weight loss by keeping us full (the next time you think you’re hungry, knock back a glass of water first), energizes muscles preventing fatigue, and helps flush out your kidneys and colon. Now that’s a superfood. Water You Waiting For? If you don’t get enough water, and most of us don’t, try to make it part of your daily routine: drink water first thing in the morning to help wake you up (squeezing the juice from a lemon into it start you off with a dose of vitamin C and potassium); drink water with meals to help you digest your food and make you feel fuller; and drink water before and/or after you start any physical activity. Remember: if you’re ever feeling thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. Invest in a bottle or a carafe with its own filter to avoid buying plastic bottles.

In Action

With more and more ways to work out and stay fit, we sent our office gym rat Stephanie Tsui to check out the city’s newest gyms and training regimens.

Ursus Fitness Offering classes in powerlifting, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), Muay Thai and boxing, Ursus Fitness is also one of the few places in Hong Kong where you can train like a strongman. Members are highly encouraged to take part in group classes under the guidance of experienced coaches. THE STRONGMAN EXPERIENCE Our three instructors started us off with an introduction to conventional deadlifts, which was a good refresher. They helped us fine-tune our setups by evaluating the height of our hips and the way we were gripping our barbells before giving us the green light to deadlift. We broke off into groups of three or four, and the session quickly progressed into an intensive 40-minute circuit of strongman-based compound movements, including lifting Atlas Stones (spherical concrete stones), keg presses, and other activities. Our instructors wasted no time pushing our limits: When we tried to take some weight off of the Conan’s wheel (a long bar with a weight placed on it, lifted by the forearms), instructor Gary made

us put it back down at once. Some experience with strength training would definitely help for a class like this, but the instructors were always around to make sure we were performing each move with proper form. We were glad to be able to test the functionality of our strength during the class, as regular strength training tends to be a lot less varied in movement.

THE VERDICT

Not for the faint of heart.

Pure Fitness The Pure Fitness ICBC Tower branch is one of the latest additions to the Pure Group. Featuring world-class facilities such as Asia’s first group RealRyder® indoor cycling studio, a spacious studio to accommodate TRX® Rip Trainer Circuit Training, plenty of floor space for gymnastics and weightlifting, and even a swimming pool, this center covers pretty much all of your fitness needs. THE RIP CIRCUIT EXPERIENCE Christ, our instructor, kicked off the 45-minute class with some warm-ups before assigning us to different stations: The Rip Trainer, weight plates, and the Power Plate. We started our circuit with the highlight of the class, the Rip Trainer, which is basically a thin rod attached to a resistance cord that’s anchored to a fixed point. The resistance cord forced us to engage our core to make manoeuvring the rod easier. Next, the Power Plate, which turned out to be a lot easier and sweatier than it looked. Whenever we were uncomfortable doing a complicated exercise, like the around-the-worldshoulder-exercise-plus-hip-circle combo, Christ was very understanding and did not push me. The Rip Circuit left us thoroughly drained and drenched—hallelujah!

THE VERDICT

Probably the quickest (but definitely not the easiest) way to make a sweat puddle.

Studio Fitness Easily mistaken for a nightclub with its booming club anthems and neon lights, Studio Fitness has the basics you need for weight training, cardio and boxing. The gym is where “working out” and “fun” go perfectly together, with its range of targeted group classes and personal training sessions, which are conducted in its newly-renovated space.

THE GET RIPPED EXPERIENCE They said it was going to be easy. It wasn’t. We signed up for an arms and legs circuit which involved many familiar moves—barbell squats, Romanian deadlifts, dumbbell lunges, bicep curls, preacher curls and skullcrushers—but nothing prepared us for the sheer number of reps we had to do. It was an intimate space, yet there were plenty of power racks to go around (and even more in their newly renovated space upstairs). Our instructor, Acton, was a gentle

giant who went around making sure everyone had good form. We started with squats and lunges before moving on to deadlifts. Maybe it was just us, but the dim lighting made it difficult to see the grips on the barbell so our deadlifts were at times lopsided. But it was also the dim lighting and the blasting EDM that got our adrenaline pumping. Still, we were so tired during the third round out of four, we had to ditch the dumbbells for bodyweight lunges. After our leg circuit we moved on to the arms, which offered some respite, although

THE VERDICT

the skullcrushers were rather taxing. Finishing off the workout with bench dips didn’t help, either. What an unexpectedly feisty marriage of cardio and weight training.

The workout to try if step aerobics doesn’t cut it anymore—but not if you’ve got a vitamin A deficiency.

THE FLYOGA EXPERIENCE We were a fish out of water for this one. We thought we were clever for picking a relaxing yoga class (our first) to round out our mini list of gym trials, but little did we know we’d be spending so much time hanging upside down during the 1.5-hour session. Flyoga isn’t just about being bendy: You need a lot of technique, some strength and plenty of faith to make sure your body is comfortably supported and NOT. GOING. TO. FALL. Our very patient instructor Joy took us through some basics of the practice, which combines yoga, aerial arts and dance, after a series of stretching, breathing and chanting. We surprised ourselves when we managed to do back bends and inverted poses just by following her directions, although we were concentrating and sweating so hard we were far from being Zen. Our favorite pose was the corpse pose, which was just us lying in hanging “cocoons” in the dark, incensed room. We certainly slept like a corpse that night. THE VERDICT
