It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra’s 50th Season, which also marks the end of my tenure as its Music Director. It has been my honour to lead this incredible orchestra over the past twelve seasons, and I am grateful for the unwavering support of all the classical music lovers in Hong Kong.

This milestone season promises to be extraordinary, with an impressive line-up of concerts featuring some of the world’s greatest classical artists, including Joshua Bell, Rudolf Buchbinder, Yo-Yo Ma and Lang Lang. We are also thrilled to have pianist Alexandre Kantorow joining us on a 20-day tour to Singapore and Europe.

Following the success of the HK Phil’s Ring cycle, I am excited to lead the orchestra in another spectacular opera-in-concert, Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman for which we have assembled a magnificent cast of world-class singers.

As my time as Music Director comes to a close, I invite you to choose the repertoire for my final concert of the season. I am immensely proud of the transformation the orchestra has achieved during our time together, and I hope that this season will be a memorable and unforgettable experience for you all.

中國音樂家協會交響樂團聯盟2024年的聯 盟會議，將於香港舉辦。作為聯盟的成員， 港樂深感榮幸能為中國交響樂團的成長和 發展獻一分力，將中國管弦樂作品推上國 際舞台。

這些年來，與港樂合作一直是賞心樂事。 我熱切期待與大家分享我們一起呈獻的美 樂！

As we celebrate this historic milestone, I am incredibly proud to be part of the HK Phil family as Principal Guest Conductor. For the orchestra’s 50th season, I have prepared two exceptional programmes that are sure to become unforgettable experiences for our audience: Verdi’s Requiem, a choral and orchestral masterpiece of colossal proportions; and Chinese composer Zhao Lin’s A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, a magnificent symphonic poem that captures the majestic beauty of China’s natural landscapes. I will also lead the orchestra in its Spring 2024 tour to Mainland China, on which we will entice audiences with an East-meets-West programme.

The 2024 Alliance Meeting of the China Musicians Association’s League of China Orchestras will be hosted in Hong Kong. As a member of the League, the HK Phil is honoured to support the growth and development of symphony orchestras in China and to help promote Chinese orchestral music on international platforms.

Working with the HK Phil is always a pleasure. I look forward to sharing the beautiful music we make together with you all.

香港管弦樂團（港樂）獲譽為亞洲最頂尖的 管弦樂團之一。港樂於1974年職業化，於 2023/24踏入金禧，為第五十個樂季。樂團 從世界各地邀請指揮和演奏家合作，每年 演出超過150場音樂會，把音樂帶給超過 20萬名觀眾。港樂積極推廣華裔作曲家的 作品，更委約新作，亦培育本地新秀，並推 行廣泛而全面的教育及社區推廣計劃，致 力將音樂帶到不同場所。灌錄的主要專輯 包括梵志登指揮的華格納全套《指環》歌劇 四部曲，以及馬勒第十交響曲（門德爾伯格 演出版本）與蕭斯達高維契第十交響曲。音

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) is regarded as one of the leading orchestras in Asia. Professionalised in 1974, the orchestra celebrates its 50 th anniversary during the 2023/24 season. Collaborating with internationally renowned conductors and soloists, the orchestra presents more than 150 concerts and attracts more than 200,000 music lovers annually. The HK Phil promotes the work of Hong Kong and Chinese composers, commissions new works, nurtures local talent and runs extensive education and community programmes. With Music Director Jaap van Zweden since 2012, the HK Phil has toured Europe, Asia, Australia and extensively across Mainland China. Yu Long has been Principal Guest Conductor since the 2015/16 Season, and Lio Kuokman was appointed Resident Conductor in December 2020. The HK Phil won the prestigious UK classical music magazine Gramophone’s 2019 Orchestra of the Year Award – the first orchestra in Asia to receive this accolade. Recent recording projects with Jaap include the complete Ring Cycle by Richard Wagner, Mahler’s Symphony no. 10 (concert version ed. Mengelberg/Dopper), and Shostakovich’s Symphony no. 10. In 2021, the HK Phil founded The Orchestra Academy Hong Kong (co-directed with The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts), aimed at offering professional training and facilitating orchestral careers for its participants.

香港管弦樂團合唱團早於1980年成立，是 港樂的專屬合唱團。多年來，港樂合唱團 與樂團一同為觀眾帶來各式各樣的合唱傑 作。2013年，合唱團進行大型招募計劃，吸 引逾450名合唱愛好者參與試音，重組後的 首次演出為韓德爾《彌賽亞》，大獲好評。合 唱團其後在馬捷爾、梵志登、麥克基根等傑 出指揮的棒下，演出巴赫、貝多芬、布拉姆 斯、布烈頓、海頓及馬勒的重要合唱作品。

港樂合唱團合唱訓練計劃於2020/21樂季 推出，為有志成為專業歌唱家的團員提供演 出及培訓機會。

The Hong Kong Philharmonic Chorus (HK Phil Chorus) has been delighting audiences since its inception in 1980. Over the years, it has showcased a diverse range of choral masterpieces in exclusive collaboration with the HK Phil. In 2013, the chorus launched an extensive recruitment campaign that attracted over 450 singers to audition. The newly formed ensemble debuted with a performance of Handel’s Messiah and has gone on to sing major works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Britten, Haydn and Mahler, under the direction of renowned conductors like Lorin Maazel, Jaap van Zweden and Nicholas McGegan. Notably, the Chorus’ Fellowship programme was inaugurated during the 2020/21 season, setting the stage for aspiring professional singers to join this distinguished ensemble.

踏入第五十個樂季，港樂將為香港樂迷帶來全球矚目的新作。由享譽國 際的小提琴家貝爾委約創作的《元素》組曲，集五位獨當一面的美國當代 作曲家聯合創作，將由貝爾與梵志登於樂季揭幕音樂會中作亞洲首演。

The HK Phil commences its 50th concert season with the Asia Premiere of The Elements, a collaborative work by five leading American composers. Each composer incorporates their chosen element of earth, water, air, fire and space into the thematic narrative of their work. Commissioned and performed by Grammy Award-winning violinist Joshua Bell, this important suite of new works is conducted by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, who concludes the concert with Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 4 – a poignant and ultimately triumphant battle with fate.

Legendary pianist Rudolf Buchbinder is the epitome of Beethoven interpretation, having performed cycles of the composer’s piano sonatas and concertos to towering acclaim. In these concerts, he performs Beethoven’s popular Piano Concertos nos. 4 and 5, paired with Mendelssohn’s Scottish and Italian symphonies, respectively, all conducted by Jaap van Zweden.

This symphonic poem was inspired by the only surviving work of the same title by the Northern Song Dynasty painter Wang Ximeng. Lin’s composition weaves folk soprano with the Chinese instruments sheng, pipa, erhu and dizi into the Western orchestral fabric to produce a unique soundscape. Yu Long conducts this co-commission by the League of China Orchestras and 23 orchestras, including the HK Phil.

Prior to cultural exchange concerts in Thailand the HK Phil presents renowned Thai pianist Poom Prommachart and HK Phil principal trumpet Nitiphum Bamrungbanthum. Together, they perform Shostakovich’s First Piano Concerto, a work that features solo trumpet almost as much as the piano. Double champion at the 2015 Paganini and 2022 Sibelius competitions, Korean violinist Inmo Yang plays Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, the work that catapulted him to international prominence. Celebrated actress, screenwriter and director Sylvia Chang brings to life one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream Chang will showcase her remarkable talents by portraying all 14 roles in this special adaptation by Taiwanese writer Yuan-pu Chiao. Resident Conductor Lio Kuokman will lead the HK Phil, sopranos Vivian Yau and Dani Zhang Jingdan, and the ladies of the HK Phil Chorus to accompany Chang’s performance with Mendelssohn’s enchanting incidental music for the play, from which the world-famous Wedding March is drawn.

Beethoven’s heroic Leonore Overture no. 3 opens the concert, and Tchaikovsky’s Capriccio italien – a richly descriptive portrait of Italy – brings the evening to a rousing finish.

Vasily Petrenko continues with a German programme, featuring English soprano Elizabeth Watts in her Hong Kong debut. Hailed as “one of the most beautiful voices Britain has produced in a generation” (International Record Review), Watts will sing five ravishing lieder by Richard Strauss, including such perennial favourites as Morgen! and Cäcilie. Petrenko concludes with Mahler’s sheerly delightful Fourth Symphony, with Watts joining in the final movement for a presentation of a child’s vision of heaven.

Opening with Berio’s enigmatic transcription of Contrapunctus XIX from The Art of Fugue, the concert concludes with Copland’s majestic, post-war Third Symphony, the finale of which quotes Fanfare for the Common Man, one of the composer’s most famous pieces.

Once known as the Sino-British Orchestra, the HK Phil became formally professionalised 50 years ago. To herald in this new chapter of the orchestra’s history, the HK Phil performed Beethoven’s Egmont Overture and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony no. 5 at its inaugural concert on 11 January 1974. Now on the same weekend 50 years later, the HK Phil will commemorate its golden jubilee by performing those two works alongside Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy.

The internationally renowned Hong Kong jazz legend Ted Lo has dedicated himself to promoting the art of jazz among the next generation of local musicians. Lo joins forces with phenomenal songstress Janice Vidal and pre-eminent guitarist Eugene Pao for two evenings of soulful songs and original compositions, accentuated by the orchestral vigour of the HK Phil with conductor Gerard Salonga.

Acclaimed Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin returns to Hong Kong with Brahms’ Violin Concerto, known for its understated virtuosity and Hungarian flavour. In the second half, rising Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong, winner of the 2016 Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition, leads the HK Phil in Bartók’s popular orchestral work, Concerto for Orchestra – a masterpiece which shows off each instrumental section.

As part of its 50th anniversary celebration, the HK Phil and Music Director Jaap van Zweden will embark on an eight-city European tour with the first French pianist to win the International Tchaikovsky Competition, Alexandre Kantorow. Hailed as the “young tsar of the piano” (Classica), Kantorow plays Rachmaninov’s Paganini Rhapsody and Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto in these two pre-tour concerts. Jaap conducts the First Symphonies of Brahms and Mahler, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony, and the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Hong Kong composer Daniel Lo across the two evenings.

The HK Phil Chorus partners with the HKU Chamber Singers to showcase four contrasting choral works at HKU’s Grand Hall. Led by French conductor Chloé Dufresne, the orchestra and combined chorus will perform Haydn’s second setting of Te Deum, followed by Anthony Au’s Hark! The Midnight Bell Echoes. Baritone Caleb Woo joins in as soloist in Vaughan Williams’ pious Five Mystical Songs, while Dani Zhang Jingdan delivers the ethereal soprano solos in Poulenc’s idiosyncratic setting of Gloria.

The HK Phil welcomes the return of two artists who gave exhilarating performances last season. Paavo Järvi returns with Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony – the composer’s most frequently performed work and a testament to an era of struggle and oppression. Also returning is Luxembourgish violinist Alena Baeva, who brings us Stravinsky’s meticulously structured Violin Concerto, widely considered his best orchestral work. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol is a perfect opener for the concert, as it echoes the dance-like qualities of Stravinsky’s neo-classical concerto.

With his quiet insights and care taken to make the music “superbly shaped” (The Times), Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste conducts Beethoven’s Eroica in his long-due HK Phil debut. Leading German concert organist Christian Schmitt joins the orchestra on Friday in a unique rendition of Bach’s famous D minor Toccata and Fugue, as well as Samuel Barber’s rarely heard Toccata festiva. The special “happy hour” performance on Saturday in Sha Tin features Concertmaster Jing Wang in Beethoven’s lyrical Second Romance.

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong Composers Scheme – Public Working Session & Showcase

「何鴻毅家族香港基金作曲家計劃」為年輕作曲家提供加深管弦樂創作經驗的平台，每 年公開徵集四至六首作品，由港樂在公開工作坊演奏。屆時公眾可見證他們在國際知名 作曲家指導下與管弦樂團合作，發揮新創作的潛力和可能性。這是一睹管弦樂作品創作 過程的難得機會。

除了「何鴻毅家族香港基金作曲家計劃」徵集的作品外，音樂會亦將演出何崇志的《功夫 狂想曲》以及盧厚敏的蕯克管協奏曲「鷹」，分別由鋼琴家李偉安與蕯克管演奏家梁國章 擔任獨奏。

The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Hong Kong Composers Scheme is a platform for young composers to deepen their experience in orchestral writing. Following an open call for new scores, four to six composers are selected to be mentored by an esteemed international composer, who will help bring out the full potential of their new works. The young composers then work with the orchestra in open public sessions to make their new music performance-ready.

The Showcase is the culmination of their hard work. In addition to performing their completed pieces, the orchestra will further celebrate local talent by presenting Steve Ho’s Kung Fu Rhapsody, featuring pianist Warren Lee, and Lo Hau-man’s Saxophone Concerto, featuring saxophonist Jacky Leung. Following the HK Phil’s acclaimed Ring Cycle in concert, Jaap van Zweden continues with concert performances of Richard Wagner’s opera. The Flying Dutchman is an opera based on the Dutch legend of the phantom ship and its doomed master. American bass-baritone Brian Mulligan stars as the cursed Dutchman, alongside soprano Jennifer Holloway as the woman determined to redeem his soul. Expect to be transported across the stormy seas of the opera’s thrilling and emotionally-charged narrative.

A number of HK Phil Jubilee Tickets specially priced at $50 will be available for selected concerts during counter sale period on a firstcome, first-served basis. 1. To avoid duplicate payment, please send one booking form per subscription only via either one booking channels (via online, email, fax or post). Confirmation letter will be sent via email within eight working days upon receiving the subscription form, and tickets will be delivered in August.

2. All forms received prior to the subscription period will be processed after 12nn on the first day of the respective subscription period.

3. All subscription tickets will be delivered via SF Express local courier. Please ensure your address and mobile number are correct. Please contact our Subscription Office if you have not received your tickets by 25 August. The HK Phil shall not be liable for any loss incurred due to delayed delivery.

4. Subscribers whose address is outside Hong Kong shall pick up all of their subscription tickets at the HK Phil Reception Counter 30 minutes before the first concert of their subscriptions.

5. Discount for Free Choice Programme is calculated by the number of programmes. Purchase more than one ticket from the same programme or more than one performance of the same programme is counted as one programme only.

6. A minimum of three programmes are required for each subscription order. Orders for two programmes or less will not be processed.

7. Discounts for Free Choice Programme and Concert Series are applicable to standard tickets for selected programmes ONLY. It is not applicable for half-priced concessionary tickets. Discounts are calculated by each transaction and cannot be carried forward to the next transaction.

8. Each subscriber may purchase a maximum of two tickets for the concert “CUHK 60th Anniversary: Yo-Yo Ma & HK Phil” during the subscription period. Each patron can purchase up to two tickets per transaction during counter sale.

9. All bookings will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis. Some programmes may receive overwhelming responses. The HK Phil cannot guarantee that tickets are available for all concerts. Please visit hkphil.org/2324sub for the latest updates.

10. HK Phil Jubilee Tickets (priced at $50), available for selected concerts this season, are unavailable during the subscription period.

1. Limited half-priced concessionary tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

2. In the case when a subscriber submits more than one valid booking form on the same day (including separate forms for Concert Series and Free Choice Programme), all such forms will be processed as one combined order, and consecutive seats will be arranged wherever possible. The combined order will be processed in the order submission time, subject to the last form on the same day. Booking forms submitted on the next day will be treated as separate bookings and processed independently.

3. Subscriptions of Free Choice Programme and Concert Series require two separate subscription forms. If you wish to process both orders in a combined fashion, please ensure that these forms are properly submitted on the same day.

4. For subscribers who are not Club Bravo Gold members, but wish to have their subscriptions of Free Choice Programme and Concert Series processed in a combined fashion, please submit both orders on the same day on 18 JUL 2023 or after. Orders will be processed independently otherwise.

5. The HK Phil makes every effort to assign seats in subscribers’ preferred zones. In case when the preferred zones are fully occupied, seats from other zones may be assigned at our discretion.

6. The seating plans in this brochure are for reference only. Some seats may have restricted sightlines.

7. All concerts are suitable for ages 6 and above, unless specified otherwise.

8. The HK Phil reserves the right to change programmes, artists, seating arrangements as well as audience capacities.
