BRIEF Andrew Marvell College’s vision is to become an excellent school which raises the aspirations of its students, staff and local community through the provision of state of the art facilities, the creation of a culture of lifelong learning and the encouragement of enterprise. Developing cutting-edge, inspirational designs of exceptional function and design excellence is the priority of Esteem. We believe these submitted proposals set new standards of design for the school that challenge accepted norms of what a school building is, whilst providing the capability to adapt to future needs of learners. Our proposal for Andrew Marvell creates an environmentally and financially sustainable building capable of delivering long-term economies and nurturing positive attitudes to sustainability amongst students.

DESIGN The notion of ‘enterprise’ and how it might be embodied is central to the curriculum and formed a central part of the concept in design. The building becomes a focal point – a Beacon - using its height to articulate aspiration, ambition and a sense of renewal combined with a sense of location describes the physical embodiment of this philosophy – an identity. The building’s form is expressed in a language of stacked, linear format blocks, rising and twisting. We have made the analogy with a stack of books. In addition to the obvious metaphorical links between books and a place of learning, the formal language of twisting planes creates three dimensional character and interest. Terraces and overhangs are generated which are utilised for different outdoor activities. To enhance the drama of the entrance sequence and celebrate the progressing identity of Andrew Marvell, the sculptural letters ‘A’ and ‘M’ literally support the dramatic entrance overhang, this continues a theme of language and lettering which runs through the school.

COMMUNITY Both Hull City Council and the School set out a central tenet in their vision for the future of secondary education to be working in close partnership with the local community to provide new hubs that will benefit not just those students attending the School, but their parents and the wider local community. The principles of design therefore, are founded on welcoming and encouraging use by the wider community. Through careful design of the new building the school’s ability to attract more community users is enhanced with access to better sports, community service and vocational learning facilities. At Andrew Marvell these spaces extend to the provision of an extended Community Services centre and Library, a provision of space for an ‘Arts and Culture’ zone where a resident artist or musician can base themselves, and an enhanced business/ conference space for local community use. The grounds provide venues for recreational activities not only to the school staff and pupils but also to the local residents and local community interest groups. Extensive changing facilities allow local sports clubs and teams use of the grass pitches by as well as the MUGA and AGP which are designed to be accessed from the parking areas.
SUSTAINABILITY Andrew Marvel College was designed to achieve a BREEAM Schools rating of “Very Good through the implementation of a variety of design methods in the building. The building achieves an Energy Performance Certificate of B at the same time attaining a carbon dioxide reduction of 23% against Building Regulations 2002 with on-site LZC energy sources contributing 50% of the buildings energy demand. Bioclimatic (the use of nature) design has been integrated into the overall design concept, restricted room depths to maximise the use of natural light which reduces the reliance of artificial lighting for the majority of the day. The arrangement of the accommodation around a central atrium allows a considerable number of the teaching spaces to be naturally lit. Other design measures encourage passive learning and include ecological features such as science and eco gardens, habitat areas and landscape features, a horticulture zone as well as the retention of the existing school farm on site.

ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS
The college showcases HKS’ environmental graphic design and its understanding of the relationship between form and content. The form of the architectural design is derived from a stack of books and the use of inspirational quotations in the hallways reflect the subjects being taught in that vicinity, not only indicative of a learning environment but they also function directionally and familiarise students and visitors with the building’s amenities. The school motto, ‘achieve, believe, celebrate’, reverberates through the design and maintains the school’s ethos throughout.
Characters from all walks of life are strategically placed throughout the college. For example: In the Auditorium Wall: George P Baker, Martha Graham, Gore Vidal, Danielle Bod, Mata Hari, Oprah Winfrey, Thomas Babington Macaulay. In the Sports Hall Walls: Mohammed Ali, Daley Thompson, Pele and Billie-Jean King. The white vinyl letters stand out on the colourful walls, bringing to life the thought provoking quotes, promoting an effective learning environment both within lessons and around the college.
