Caterpillar Travel (毛蟲稽考 ) Core Service Type: - Youth - Art & Culture - Poverty

Hong Kong has 300,000 children living below the poverty line. Without urgent help, these children and their families will fail in tomorrow’s society: unless they are equipped with the communication skills to determine their future. Caterpillar Travel can provide the opportunities for these children to become caring, capable and confident future citizens. Caterpillar Travel aims to initiate a brighter future, while also revealing Hong Kong’s hidden beauty to the world. We pledge to help underprivileged children (10 – 16 year olds) to cultivate their language proficiency, interpersonal skills and confidence levels. We will achieve this through three-months of intensive training to help them become Cultural Ambassadors for local tours. In addition, this experience will cultivate their sense of belonging towards the community and provide a foundation for understanding their roots. Caterpillar Travel also wants more people to enjoy the cultural, social and historical facets of Hong Kong. So our Cultural Ambassadors will conduct guided tours to discover Hong Kong, gain new insights and enjoy a revolutionary experience of our distinctive cultural and social phenomenon. Our Ambassadors will tell the stories of the unique characteristics of Sham Shui Po – Apliu Street, Toy Street and Cloth Street. They will also lead a number of other tours to admire the history and beauty of the Hong Kong society. Our tour participants will therefore witness Hong Kong’s evolution from a negligible fishing village into a cosmopolitan financial hub.

Business Classification: - Travel - Education

Take2 intend to bring together our expertise in Marketing, Finance and Management services with their work and creativity. In return for their work, Take2 will provide the raw materials, collection of their finished accessories and then the sales and marketing under the Take2 brand.

Take2 AIMS TO: 1. 2. 3.

Enable women to retrieve their professional handicraft skills and share the profits with Take2 to achieve a better quality of life. Recycle waste materials for creating fashionable accessories to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection. Propagate sustainable consumption through recyclable and upcycled products.

SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION Consumers wish to be socially responsible in what they buy. Rather than helping and supporting big brands, many consumers want to help the poor. Take2 products make a statement about our commitment to sustainable consumption and directly helping our community. We believe consumers are ready to choose Take2 products.

G-Paint

我的樽, 我的 Drink

NOCO² (the Company) offers everyone a solution to help prevent one of the greatest threats to life on earth – global warming. NOCO² incorporates a carbon dioxide absorption technology called G-Paint. This revolutionary dye can instantly turn our clothes into a carbon absorbing agent. And so just by walking around, our clothes can actually absorb carbon dioxide and combat global warming. By simply wearing a T-shirt with G-Paint technology, people can immediately start cutting down on CO².

Core Service Type: - Environment & Conservation Business Classification: - Consumer Product - Retailing - Clothing & Accessories

To further differentiate ourselves, the T-shirt design themes will focus on conservation and preservation. However, rather than designing them ourselves, we will engage our customers to collaborate and create the designs on the company website. Users will then vote for the best designs to be manufactured and then purchase the T-shirts online. NOCO² incorporates our beliefs in democratic design and the message of conservation and preservation in a stylish way.

We feel pensioners would welcome a new lease of life and new interests to fulfill their retirement. Honey B. has an exciting proposal to engage the elderly in cultivating nature and creating their own business.

時光背囊

Honey B. is a local bee garden chain that provides opportunities in beekeeping and honey production in rural areas e.g. Tai Po. Far from being an unusual idea, many beekeepers in Hong Kong are actually pensioners anyway. Also, to help us we are collaborating with the Beekeepers Association of Hong Kong - ten pensioners have already expressed an interest.

The Red Balloon

The “Hong Kong Kid Phenomenon”, an appellation for the prevalent and growing problem of a new generation of Hong Kong youth, refers to children who are “too pampered, and vulnerable to adverse situations”. A July 2010 survey revealed over 50% of parents say their children (ranging in age from 5 to 16) cannot brush their teeth or eat independently. These are shocking statistics, not least because they exist at all, and they highlight the fact that the current generation constantly depends on others, has no understanding of hardship, and is highly self-centered, which together lead to a general lack of responsibility towards self and others.

Core Service Type: - Youth - Families & Communities

The Red Balloon is an educational social enterprise that provides an experiential learning programme, consisting of overseas and local exchanges and service learning, for Form 1 students. The programme has three main parts, namely an Overseas Trip, an Engagement Session with parents, and a Service Learning followup. In the first part, students will be taken on an Overseas Service and Experiential Learning Trip. After the trip, the students will hold an exhibition in school, involving parents, to present what they have learned during the trip and spread their new sense of community among their peers. All participants will build a social network to maintain communication and continued participation in community service, and The Red Balloon will keep providing volunteering opportunities and information.

Healthcare Et Cetera aims to provide qualified and convenient pharmaceutical services and raise the awareness of drug safety and disease prevention.

9

Healthcare Et Cetera Core Service Type: - Poverty - Families & Communities - Professionals

Our business model consists of two components: an online platform and outreach programs. Ampoule, our online platform founded by Dr. Vivian Lee (a Pharmacy Professor from CUHK), features a unique function called “Ask My Pharmacist” This allows internet users to email drug-related questions and also receive customized responses from our registered pharmacist. The website will also contain information about disease prevention and management as well as sensitive issues such as contraceptives, diet pills and drug abuse. To generate revenue, Ampoule will provide “Meet My Pharmacist” (web conferencing) service exclusively to our business partners such as pharmacy chains and community centers. After subscribing to our service, registered pharmacists will provide advice to the customers or patients of our business partners. People will be able to access advice through “Meet My Pharmacist”. Far from being impractical, the Mannings pharmacy chain and seven community centers in Hong Kong are interested in subscribing to our services.

Business Classification: - Health Care Services - IT Services - Education

To complement the online platform, we will organize health seminars and health days to educate patients with chronic diseases, low-income families and healthcare professionals. In cooperation with NGOs, we will conduct outreach activities and also seek sponsorship from pharmaceutical and FMCG companies. Through transferring drug knowledge and enhanced communications between patients and pharmacists, we can promote safe and proper medication use, leading to better drug treatment outcomes and a lower healthcare cost.

Oops!

The interior design industry is wasting huge quantities of building materials. This includes tiles, paint, wood and construction material. Surprisingly, an additional 10% of extra materials are usually ordered as a contingency during construction. (To give you an idea of the waste, within three months, three interior design companies would generate enough waste to fill almost one basketball court.) Even though the surplus materials are unused and in good condition, they are treated as building waste - and dumped into landfills. Oops! has a solution. We would like to transform this ‘waste’ into art. Artists are looking for a wide variety of materials e.g. stone, upholstery and tiles. You would only need a little imagination to see how these materials could become paintings, sculptures and mosaics to admire and enjoy. With minimal effort, artists could easily extend the life of materials. Our initiative would also reduce the pressure on our landfills through recycling programs.

Core Service Type: - Environment & Conservation - Art & Culture Business Classification: - Consumer Product - Retailing -Education

WHY DID WE START THE PROJECT? The World Wide Web (WWW) brings people together from around the world. However, it was created for people blessed with the gift of sight. Unfortunately, our world has:

L

Local needs:

We care about local community needs

O

Obligation:

We are obliged to being kind and caring to the people in need

V

Voluntary services:

E

Evolution:

Time for you to change your status from “single” to “in a relationship”?

Core Service Type: - Families & Communities

Many single men and women are ready for marriage, yet they often lack a channel to meet a potential partner.

Business Classification: - Customer Services

Many social services are required by local communities, however there are insufficient volunteers.

285 million people who are visually impaired 39 million who are blind 246 million who have low vision

Without the Internet, a staggering 570 million of our global community has been locked out of the information age and every 5 seconds, another person goes blind.

WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO? Imagine being visually impaired: how would you know where to click or what options to select? The solution is voice recognition and audible responses. Put simply, our service would work like a voice assistant:

1. Users speak into a device 2. Voice is converted into text commands 3. Text commands are sent to our server 4. Commands are executed to collect information e.g. news, email 5. Retrieved information is converted into audio 6. Users can listen to the news or email message

So users can operate our service just by speaking in English, Cantonese or Putonghua. The process has been summarized below.

Our idea is simple: we plan to bring together single men and women through volunteering for social services.

In addition to education seminars, our business model will include the expected elements of a dating agency i.e. ice breaking games and dinners. However, we would also like to differentiate ourselves by providing a full programme of social voluntary services such as planting trees and cleaning up beaches.

Our innovation is recycling waste iron powder into valuable industrial products. We “up”grade waste magnetic material to produce essential parts for motors and transformers in cars and planes. What could be more environmentally friendly?

Water pollution costs heavily to the planet, every litre of polluting water pollutes 7 litres of clean water. 70% of water pollution comes from the excessive use and disposal of non-biodegradable household detergents. Eco$ave, an eco-friendly and moneysaving green detergent provides the unique formulation to this environmental predicament. Eco$ave decomposes into harmless carbon-dioxide and sulphate in 28 days. Together with its innovative product dispenser, ‘Just-A-Press’ and as the only pioneering detergent comprised of methanesulfonic acid, Eco$ave ultimately promotes rational detergent usage and help consumers to save money.

Eco$ave Core Service Type: - Environment & Conservation - Poverty - Women

As an environmental-social enterprise registered in Hong Kong, EcoSave International Ltd. was recognized by several local and international competitions, such as being the first team to ever represent China in winning the World-Champion in the 6th-LeeKuan-Yew-Global-Business-Plan-Competition and the first-runner-up in the YDCEChallenge-2011.

Business Classification: - Consumer Product - Retailing - Education

Eco$ave aims to achieve a threefold social impact. Eco$ave not only delivers a costeffective and green alternative to consumers, but aims to promote social convergence in our society. This is achieved through redistributing our profits to promote environmental education to primary students and to improve the standard of living in low-income areas in Hong Kong through providing employment and training opportunities for low-skilled housewives. We believe this will enable these people to gain vital skills to enhance their long-term competitiveness whilst benefiting from invaluable word of mouth branding effects and most importantly plant the seed of environmental protection to our next generation. Ultimately, the goal is for the society to work together in making the world a greener place.

Our slogan is “Makes Differences, Rewards Society”. To do this, we collect waste material from factories in Hong Kong and China. Then we apply technology to manufacture new magnetic materials for industrial uses. We believe that producing the Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) by recycling iron waste will reduce waste and pollution. Also, by improving the efficiency of motors with SMC, harmful exhaust fumes will be reduced and air quality will improve - big difference and many rewards. We estimate an initial output of 5 – 10 tons of SMC and this is expected to grow with time. However, we also estimate wider benefits. We wish to spread our recycling message to schools and organize factory visits or talks on our recycling processes. We also anticipate creating new jobs for low-skilled workers. Best of all, we expect to do well because our processes are cheaper and more efficient than similar processes in other countries.

Diagram shows the waste iron particle we collect, then mix and treat with chemicals to produce SMC.

Our team members combine expertise in science, business and engineering. Together, we have integrated technologies in physics, chemistry and chemical engineering to produce essential SMC products in electrical engineering.

Can you think of any connections between single mothers and office ladies? Many single mothers from the mainland have few choices. Perhaps having no way to return to China and a low education level, they struggle to pay for rent and for their children. Even worse is that taking care of their children has drastically limited their work availability.

Rooftop Studio Hong Kong produces 13,000 tons of solid waste every day. We are one of the most wasteful cities in the world. Our landfills are being exhausted and consumerism is continually growing. Other than recycling waste, the government has been struggling to find a sustainable solution and changing the behavior of society.

Core Service Type: - Environment & Conservation - Art & Culture Business Classification: - Consumer Product - Retailing - Education

Rooftop Studio is a group of young designers with a successful commercial venture. We create works of art out of waste materials and then sell them. We believe design can raise awareness, inspire and educate society about treasuring the objects around us. We have designed a variety of products e.g. notebooks made from wallpaper, banner lighting, egg shell candles and speakers made from plastic bottles. We thrive on surprising our customers and reminding them about the potential of ‘waste’ materials. We have also been invited to hold workshops, lectures and exhibitions to directly spread our beliefs. (Events include a summer workshop for the Caritas Bianchi College of Careers, and representing Hong Kong at the International Design Festival in Berlin.)

The connection is NatWork. We are a facial care company hiring minorities like immigrant mothers and local mothers as mask makers. We customize and hand make 100% organic masks for office ladies (OLs). These women are keen on natural facial care products, but are too busy or too tired to make them. We aim to offer not only handmade natural masks, but a professional facial care service with quality assurance supported by scientific research from a local university. So unlike expensive brand name masks, we don’t use marketing hype – just real science and real social responsibility. All OLs need to do is order from our range of DIY natural masks. All our ingredients are customizable according to the customer’s specifications with natural ingredients. After we receive the orders, our staff produce the masks during times convenient with them and earn a salary. NatWork therefore satisfies the needs of both parties.

Office ladies in Hong Kong also have problems, but of a different nature – long hours and fatigue. They desire DIY natural masks, but are too busy, so they apply non-natural facial masks with additives, which might cause potential skin problems.

Several organizations have even contacted us to donate whole trucks of industrial waste. They wish us to make a good use out of them instead of putting them into a landfill. These opportunities have allowed us to build a waste material library in our studio and continue to create more innovative work. We have opened up a brand new market, where waste can be reborn by meeting with creative minds.

The search for sustainable organic clothing material is over. An alternative has been rediscovered – Chiengora!

WHAT IS CHIENGORA? If you knew how incredibly functional it was, you’d probably jump at the chance to wear it. Chiengora is artistically smooth and silky and can be blended with other fibers. It’s 80% warmer than wool and even waterproof! So it’s easy to imagine Chiengora as a high-fashion material for clothes and accessories – just like a work of art. Unbelievably, it is easily accessible as a waste product, locally sustainable and environmental friendly.

WHERE CAN WE FIND IT? Chiengora is a fashionable and quirky animal fiber, which primarily comes from grooming…dogs. That’s right, dogs! (Hong Kong has over 317,000 dogs.) Chiengora is perfect for manufacturing clothes, blankets and bags. In fact, it was first used many centuries ago by the Europeans and the Mayans. Also in 2007, Chiengora was scientifically tested and confirmed to be commercially viable as a staple yarn.
