MESSAGE FROM THE UNDER SECRETARY FOR HOME AFFAIRS In recent years, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR Government) has spared no effort in facilitating the development of social enterprises (SEs) through a wide array of initiatives and channels. Thanks to the collaboration of many enthusiastic SE partners, we are delighted to witness the concept of SE gaining popularity and support in the community. Motivated by diverse social objectives, such as providing job opportunities to support the integration of the underprivileged into society, creating novel services to promote environmental protection and waste reduction, SEs have been making significant contributions to the building of a better civic society. To facilitate sustainable development and further growth of SEs and for SEs to accomplish the dual objectives of attaining both“social benefit for the public” and“economic viability”, it is imperative to nurture social entrepreneurs. Thus, the Home Affairs Bureau has been sponsoring the Hong Kong Social Enterprise Challenge since 2008, under which young people would widen their horizon to the social innovative projects through attending seminars and workshops, as
well as paying visits to SEs. The competition aims to deepen the young people’s understanding of the social objectives achieved through SE operation, and facilitate social cohesion and cross-sectoral collaboration and exchange. At the same time, in terms of personal development, the young people would learn how to make use of business operation to address social issues. Since its debut, the Challenge has attracted the participation of almost 4 000 tertiary students; it is encouraging that many participating teams took further steps to implement their business plans and set up SEs with innovative minds and entrepreneurial versatility. What is more, some SEs with special attractions are still in operation today. I sincerely hope that young people will continue to actively support and participate in the development of SEs, and join hands with other sectors of the society in promoting SEs. Let’ s work together and build up a community with care for humanity and dynamics of innovation.

MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP THE CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG Six Years ago when Hong Kong Social Enterprise Challenge (HKSEC) began, not too many people could say with confidence what a social enterprise should do. Time flies. Social entrepreneurship has now gone into the mainstream, I would say. The younger generation are telling us what social enterprises can do. Among the participants this year, they talk about reducing waste, creating meaningful jobs for the disadvantaged, providing equal opportunity for education, and reuniting the family and the community. This year, a new record of 859 students from 24 Hong Kong post-secondary institutions entered HKSEC. The 104 students and fresh graduates from 24 semifinalist teams come from eight different postsecondary institutions. Students and fresh graduates from undergraduate programs account for 60 percent of participants with the rest come from various post-graduate programs. Among the participants, 40 percent are from the faculties of business and law, 33 percent from arts and social sciences, 27 percent from engineering and sciences. In the last two years, the plans submitted have jumped in creativity more from the angles of art and design. Together there was an increase in participation from these disciplines. This year, we proposed the theme“Good Technology, Good Business”with the goal of increasing the interest and participation from the engineering and science disciplines. They have been underrepresented, even though technology can play a major part in any new ventures. We thought it is essential that we do something about it. The 10% increase of these groups among the semi-finalists indicates a modest success, and we shall pick up on this effort in the future.
preliminary idea after beta test. They now understand that this can improve feasibility and, as a result, attract the interest of investors and sponsors. Judges agree with my observation that the competition is at all time high. With regard to promoting social entrepreneurship universities are shouldering the responsibility for engendering moral leadership in society. Hong Kong’s social enterprise community is growing with the industrial, government, NGO and educational sectors developing complementary networks. Mentors, social investors and their friends are growing in numbers and accessibility. And, increasingly, contestants are spreading the word that they can try something new, something different, something more meaningful when they graduate. We at the Center for Entrepreneurship of The Chinese University of Hong Kong are honored to be part of this movement and to organize HKSEC 2012. We sincerely thank the Home Affairs Bureau, our gala dinner and events sponsor are BridgeWay Business Broker Co., Ltd, and category awards sponsors – Convoy Financial Services Limited, Hong Kong Design Centre and Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation Limited. HKSEC relies heavily on partners, patrons, supporting organizations, mentors, judges, the faculty and staff in Hong Kong’s post-secondary institutions who promote HKSEC to their students. But most of all, HKSEC relies on our contestants. Their enthusiasm, creativity and responsibility change the world one day.

Lensational Lensational A dual solution to bringing the world closer
The Power of a Camera Lens
Small Museum – Big Impact
“Women hold up half the sky.”
Our world has become increasingly interconnected.
Despite this, women in developing countries face serious gender discrimination, resulting to a multitude of problems such as economic dependency or even mental disorder.
However, Hong Kong society generally shows a low awareness of world issues, particularly among secondary school and university students.
Lensational’s photo-education program aims to empower women in Indonesia – both economically and emotionally through the power of a camera lens.
Lensational has adopted the small-museum model to spread the message of women empowerment. The museum will exhibit real stories of Indonesian women – captured through photography.
We envisage all women, rich and poor alike, around the world being equipped with a camera and professional photography techniques to express their hopes and dreams. This would be the first step to empower more women.
The plight of Indonesian women will be the core themes in the museum. We aim to engage and educate our audience via photographs and an audio tour.
One Goal Our ultimate goal is to source photographs from aspiring female photographers in developing countries for our museum. All proceeds from admission fees and product sales will be returned to women in the developing world for their economic empowerment.

FINALIST

Alchemist
FINALIST
“ TURN NEGLECT INTO SHINE” – Alchemist motto Alchemist is a design based social enterprise. We take daily trash and “Upcycle” it into elegant goods. But how do we intend to do this? We use the bases of aluminum soda cans. Then, we process and modify the cans to transform and incorporate this ordinary waste material into watch designs and lighting products – all through the seamless integration of function and the material itself. However, through our work, we perform greater alchemy within people. We concern about our workers. We aim to help people who have been neglected and to give them self-respect. We have partnered with local sheltered workshops - St James’ Settlement and the Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC). Their involvement will add credibility and recognition among people with disabilities. In addition, we have forged a relationship with an eminent watch manufacturer – Avvan Alliance Limited. Under their guidance in the manufacturing process, we have also designed special tools to allow people with disability to work in a safe environment. CAN is the signature product line from Alchemist which includes the CAN-lighting and CAN-Time series. We have applied our signature use of discarded Aluminum soda cans to the CAN series. An added advantage is that we own the design registration for using soda can bases and the innovative application of the bases into our designs. We are the first and sole producer to apply discarded soda can bases in timepiece designs.

FINALIST
Harmonia Tons of food waste are produced and sent into landfills every day. However, if leftover food were valuable, would you throw it away? Believe it or not, Harmonia is hungry for your leftover food, because we can put it to other commercial and environmental uses. Your food waste can become compost for plants, fruit trees and vegetables. To further “upcycle” food waste, we will use these naturally fertilized plants to produce 100% natural skincare products – products where we see high demand. Our commercial partner, Daily Daisy, possesses the expertise in making the products while we have talents in design, sales, marketing and education. And so together we make a versatile team to serve the environment and our customers. With food and environmental scares abounding, consumers are more health-conscious than ever. The ever-growing trend is to buy natural products and that will be our target. We will promote our products as being natural, functional and harmless to the environment. We also believe that our products will be a welcome alternative to other harsh petrochemical-based products on offer. People will be more than happy to see themselves with natural, healthy and beautiful skin – and so would we. Our scope is wider than just food waste reduction. We also promote the concept of sustainability. That’s because our handmade products will reduce Hong Kong’s carbon footprint and help to diversify the Hong Kong economy. Harmonia would love to see more harmony between the environment and humans. We hope that everyone can be Harmonia.

Eldpathy
FINALIST
We are passionate about improving the lives of the elderly. And we would like you to be involved too. Eldpathy aims to promote “Empathy for the Elderly” by encouraging participation in philanthropy toward the elderly. Due to the aging population, Hong Kong will soon become an Aging Society and so this will bring serious economic, medical and social challenges. To heighten the understanding of the issues related to the elderly and to inspire more people to engage in projects related to the elderly, we offer our Elderly Simulation Program. Eldpathy participants will learn through our 3E process: Experience, Empathize and Excited. The Eldpathy program enables participants to experience the life of an elderly person in their 70s by wearing a specially designed suit. Participants will then undertake Elderly Challenges – a series of fun tasks to experience real scenarios and hardships faced by the elderly. Additionally, we will employ underprivileged elders to share their experience and interact with the participants. The participants will build empathy through the elderly challenges and the cross-generation dialogue. Lastly, we will provide a platform for participants to channel their empathy by joining various elderly voluntary services. We will target students and corporations who are interested in volunteering or expanding into elderly care and will be supported through revenue from program fees. We also have a diverse advisory board of directors including professionals from the academic, social welfare and business fields. We are well positioned to tackle the aging problem in Hong Kong.
