maGAPzine Question : What are the differences between old and young people? Answer : The differences are that old people have wisdom and maturity.
The proportion of retirees in Hong Kong will increase in the coming years. However, it is commonly perceived that the retired population no longer adds value to society. We often forget that they are experienced and insightful. Therefore, to rectify the misconception and enhance inter-generational communication, maGAPzine would like to introduce a platform for the elderly to exchange their insights and values with the next generation. Our core product is a mini magazine called maGAPzine. It provides perspectives on social issues from different generations. Each installment will discuss current affairs and provide viewpoints on social issues and topics of public interest. Both young and old people can write articles and their opinions will be compared side-by-side. Another key service we intend to provide is the “Work-GAP-out” programme. Retired people might have traditional skills, crafts or knowledge that can be passed on to the younger generation. These special techniques and knowledge will be packaged as workshops and sold to schools or tourists. Packages can be tailor-made, but the initial package will be about Hong Kong culture. Our ultimate goal is to increase the social exposure of retirees and the value they can add back to society. Rather than continue to isolate, we want to bridge the generation GAP that divides us. We believe that bringing society closer together will be good for all of us.

Xingergy Environmental and Energy Technologies The basics of survival – food, water, and shelter, are no longer enough for modern society. Innumerous innovations now provide the average family with a life unimaginable to previous generations. Except one basic need – waste management. Landfills, man’s only solution to waste for thousands of years, are no longer viable. Air, soil, and water pollution from landfills is killing thousands, while ruining crops and waterways. Burning waste produces even more pollution. Meanwhile, limited natural resources are being consumed by an increasingly resource hungry and growing population. The world, led by China, discards over 200 million tons of waste every year and is now facing an unprecedented waste crisis. Xingergy Environmental and Energy Technologies is bridging the gap between waste and resources, reforming waste into usable resources, without polluting. Imagine a city with no landfills and clean renewable energy. To accomplish this, Xingergy is developing microwave plasma gasification – a process whereby chemical bonds in waste are broken apart using very high heat plasma, reforming waste from many complex compounds into a few useful, simple compounds and elements. The process: • Reforms organic material into an energy rich gas. • Reforms inorganic material into a vitrified non-leaching slag, a commercially useful product. • Recovers metals. • Remediates hazardous materials such as coal fly ash, asbestos, radioactive, and nuclear waste. A refinery can be small, specializing in previously unrecyclable waste. Or very large, processing several thousand tons of municipal solid waste daily while providing over 4MW of baseline power per 100 tons. Visit us at xingergy.hk

TRAnSH Lets go TRAnSH some trash! Instead of going to landfills, incinerators and recycling centres, where else could our garbage go? Could the million tonnes of garbage be processed in a more environmental – friendly or even profitable way? How not to handle garbage – the HK way Hong Kong’s efforts in the disposal of garbage are expensive and far from effective. Hectares of garbage degrade your living environment, while combustion of disposal results in harmful pollutants. Even though garbage recycling is encouraged, it’s too expensive to sort. Plasma Gasification: Garbage in Energy out – the TRAnSH way Plasma gasification technology is an innovative solution to solving the problems of our mountains of garbage. Amazingly, during the process of decomposition of garbage, we can generate electricity and valuable by-products like vitrified glass, metal, hydrochloric acid and distilled water. The process involves three working stages: i) Garbage shredded into scraps ii) Scraps disintegrated in a container with great heat iii) Syngas and other by-products produced Choose TRAnSH to clean up your future Our proposal has gained actual support from a number of local housing estates. Also, Hong Kong urgently needs the right solution. TRAnSH offers an easy solution for a tough problem.

Our world has become increasingly interconnected.
Despite this, women in developing countries face serious gender discrimination, resulting to a multitude of problems such as economic dependency or even mental disorder. We envisage all women, rich and poor alike, around the world being equipped with a camera and professional photography techniques to express their hopes and dreams. This would be the first step to empower more women.
However, Hong Kong society generally shows a low awareness of world issues, particularly among secondary school and university students. Lensational has adopted the smallmuseum model to spread the message of women empowerment. The museum will exhibit real stories of Indonesian women – captured through photography. The plight of Indonesian women will be the core themes in the museum. We aim to engage and educate our audience via photographs and an audio tour.
One Goal Our ultimate goal is to source photographs from aspiring female photographers in developing countries for our museum. All proceeds from admission fees and product sales will be returned to women in the developing world for their economic empowerment.

Harmonia Tons of food waste is produced and sent into landfills every day. However, if leftover food were valuable, would you throw it away? Believe it or not, Harmonia are hungry for your leftover food, because we can put it to other commercial and environmental uses. Your food waste can become compost for plants, fruit trees and vegetables. To further “upcycle” food waste, we will use these naturally fertilized plants to produce 100% natural skincare products – products where we see high demand. Our commercial partner, Daily Daisy, possesses the expertise in making the products while we have talents in design, sales, marketing and education. And so together we make a versatile team to serve the environment and our customers. With food and environmental scares abounding, consumers are more health-conscious than ever. The ever-growing trend is to buy natural products and that will be our target. We will promote our products as being natural, functional and harmless to the environment. We also believe that our products will be a welcome alternative to other harsh petrochemical-based products on offer. People will be more than happy to see themselves with natural, healthy and beautiful skin – and so would we.

Eldpathy We are passionate about improving the lives of the elderly. And we would like you to be involved too. Eldpathy aims to promote “Empathy for the Elderly” by encouraging participation in philanthropy toward the elderly. Due to the aging population, Hong Kong will soon become an Aging Society and so this will bring serious economic, medical and social challenges. To heighten the understanding of the issues related to the elderly and to inspire more people to engage in projects related to the elderly, we offer our Elderly Simulation Program. Eldpathy participants will learn through our 3E process: Experience, Empathize and Excited. The Eldpathy program enables participants to experience the life of an elderly person in their 70s by wearing a specially designed suit. Participants will then undertake Elderly Challenges – a series of fun tasks to experience real scenarios and hardships faced by the elderly. Additionally, we will employ underprivileged elders to share their experience and interact with the participants. The participants will build empathy through the elderly challenges and the cross-generation dialogue. Lastly, we will provide a platform for participants to channel their empathy by joining various elderly voluntary services. We will target students and corporations who are interested in volunteering or expanding into elderly care and will be supported through revenue from program fees. We also have a diverse advisory board of directors including professionals from the academic, social welfare and business fields. We are well positioned to tackle the aging problem in Hong Kong.

Dhobi Over 5 billion people have to hand wash their clothes. An average village spends about 15 years of man-hours on this highly repetitive arduous task. That’s 15 years of lost productivity, opportunity and thus, development. How many of the remaining 2 billion of us understand the effort it takes to hand wash our laundry? In a TED lecture, Hans Rosling claimed, "The washing machine is the single most important invention of the modern age." And so we asking, "Why can't the whole world have washing machines?” We’ve spent months in conceptualizing and fine-tuning a system that could change the standard of living of a considerable part of the human population while remaining profitable, sustainable and environmentally-friendly. We introduce Dhobi – a modular system that will provide access to clean, safe and hygienic laundry washing facilities to millions of people in developing countries. Using cheap, yet reliable components we are able to provide this machine at low cost so that the services it provides are affordable even for the most underdeveloped sections of our population. This translates into greater opportunities for local communities to substitute the hard, time consuming and unproductive labor of washing clothes with meaningful tasks such as education, childcare and additional income from work. At the same time our system will improve hygiene standards and preserve fresh water from both wastage and contamination. 組長 Team Leader Ashwin GOYAL

The ease of transporting Dhobi without disassembly allows it to be setup with minimal oversight. A system that will enable 5 billion people to work, learn and spend time on things that truly matter. In addition, with the increase in productivity and hygiene, the system has palpable scope for long-term returns. It’s easy to ignore something as basic as washing clothes when it’s automated. But how many of us can go a week, let alone a lifetime, without a washing machine? Help us change lives, one cycle at a time.

Oases aims to re-establish the broken primitive connection between people and nature. Through being able to sow and plant in person we have redesigned the experience of farming for modern citizens, and brought everybody a chance to own their own piece of land, to really "touch" and to care for their own crops. Due to the popularity of mobile technology, Oases has incorporated farming into our urban lifestyles, but without burdens. We have endeavoured to direct their leisure time spending on smart phone apps to a real taste of farming. Involving them in a conversation with nature and reminding them of our precious nature. We look for the first step by those who have stayed away from nature in this modern age.

Teach it forward Our concept is borrowed from the movie called ‘Pay it forward’, which is about a young boy spreading a simple idea across the entire American nation. He feels that when someone helps you, you must help a few more people, and then the cycle can go on. Our idea is to ‘Teach it forward’ (TIForward). This will be one of the first ‘international’ tuition centers to be a social enterprise. It will help prepare students to grasp the opportunity they deserve i.e. to get a place at their dream university and to get scholarship offers. We ourselves will provide the ‘Teach it forward’ scholarship. TIForward aims to succeed by firstly providing needy students with the necessary tuition. This will equip them to be more eligible for scholarships from overseas universities. Secondly, TIForward will also help prepare children in ASEAN countries to be more ‘globalized’ and open to international perspectives from different students from different countries. We can achieve this by teaching through video-conferencing. With our slogan of 'From seniors to juniors', we hope that knowledge and experience will be passed on to the next generation. As seniors, we hope to inspire young minds to think big and think about others. And we hope that they will live up to this idea and ... teach it forward.

Hairy Tale Let’s face it. Hair is a nuisance. You have to brush and wash it. It falls in your food or soup. You pay hundreds of dollars cutting and dyeing it. But what practical uses does it have? We've combed through scientific experiments and research conducted by NASA. The bald fact is that hair has a multitude of uses and we’d like to highlight two major ways we can help society. For example, did you know that your hair can reduce the harmful environmental impacts of oil spill disasters? Hair can also contribute to organic farming as a natural fertilizer and herbicide. Can hair really do so much? With the introduction of Hairy Tale, the answer is… YES! These aren’t just hairbrained ideas, we’re for real. So out of these little-known facts, grew a number of hair-raising possibilities to dye for. Hairy Tale is a social enterprise to explore the ultimate functions of hair (and their extensions) and its opportunities to grow as a business. We collect unwanted human hair that has been carefully selected from local salons. We then process them to make the hair pads, and market them to local/ China organic farms as well as to NGOs as an oil absorbent for harbor and oil spill cleaning. At the same time, we wish to provide employment opportunities to unskilled workers to alleviate the poverty problem in Hong Kong. 組長 Team Leader 馬仲怡 MA Chung Yee

Inno-Chemos (International) Technology In recent years, disasters related to contaminated products have perpetuated fear among the masses. Two of the most notable cases were the lead-tainted toy scandal in 2007, and the milk powder scandal in 2008. Both incidents took place in China where Quality Control testing is widely neglected. Although quality control has been strengthened, no one can guarantee that the products we use are completely free from danger. Unfortunately, the nature of these disasters is inevitably recurrent due to mass production of goods – and so we can only wait for the next tragedy to unfold. Knowing this, the Inno-Chemos team proposes a range of solutions to meet the challenge. We propose the use of chemo-sensors in consumer product testing. Why? Simply because of three main reasons: it provides a cost-efficient, timesaving, and accurate method that can be easily disseminated. However, this is just the beginning. The Inno-Chemos team is working hard to make this social venture idea become a reality. Above all, we wish to make this society a safer place to live in. Our objective is to design user-friendly testing devices, which anyone can use easily at any given time, and be assured of a reliable and accurate result with whichever product they use. Another bold initiative will be to also produce a lab-on-a-chip to be used by low-cost manufacturers for testing. 組長 Team Leader 紀建德 TIGOUMO Ngoudjou Ralph Aurel

Alchemist “ TURN NEGLECT INTO SHINE” – Alchemist motto Alchemist is a design based social enterprise. We take daily trash and “Upcycle” it into elegant goods. But how do we intend to do this? We use the bases of aluminum soda cans. Then, we process and modify the cans to transform and incorporate this ordinary waste material into watch designs and lighting products – all through the seamless integration of function and the material itself. However, through our work, we perform greater alchemy within people. We are concerned about our workers. We aim to help people who have been neglected and to give them self-respect. We have partnered with local sheltered workshops - St James’ Settlement and the Christian Family Service Centre (CFSC). Their involvement will add credibility and recognition among people with disabilities. In addition, we have forged a relationship with an eminent watch manufacturer – Avvan Alliance Limited. Under their guidance in the manufacturing process, we have also designed special tools to allow people with disability to work in a safe environment. CAN is the signature product line from Alchemist which includes the CAN-lighting and CAN-Time series. We have applied our signature use of discarded Aluminum soda cans to the CAN series. An added advantage is that we own the design registration for using soda can bases and the innovative application of the bases into our designs. We are the first and sole producer to apply discarded soda can bases in timepiece designs.

Sunshine The Sunshine Project aims to introduce a new social ecosystem that alleviates the long existing challenges faced by intellectually disabled athletes (IDAs) by engaging their neglected talents into the labour-deprived organic farming industry of Hong Kong, within which both parties co-create sustainable opportunities for each other. Being athletes, IDAs have proven themselves to have physical strength, consistency, focused mind, perseverance and a love for the outdoors. These fundamental qualities match closely with the qualities needed to work on a farm. By tuning the IDAs' existing talents to farm tasks, they are likely to contribute more to the farm than ordinary workers – boosting productivity and market competitiveness. We provide not only immediate results, but also a long-term solution to the core stakeholders mentioned and their related stakeholders, such as the IDAs’ caregivers, produce consumers and government bodies. With our strategic collaboration with young retirees and school network, we will maximize the social impact through more engagement and education.

Seeds for Change Hong Kong’s neediest groups rely heavily on the work of nonprofits or NGOs. However, we might not appreciate just how underfunded they are to help the poor, the sick and those most at risk. It is also easy to overlook the fact that nonprofits and NGOs depend on volunteers to manage and support their operations and events – and essentially help those who are least able to help themselves. So who are these volunteers? Where do they come from? Firstly, they are and have always been one of the most important resources of NGOs. Secondly, volunteers are often the key for successful events and programmes. Yet due to a lack of resources for publicity and promotion, the recruiting and retention of volunteers is a constant challenge for nonprofits. Therefore, we see a key need for an integrated platform to recruit and engage volunteers. This situation is ripe for change. “Seeds for Change” aims to help recruit and engage volunteers through an online web platform to engage the community. Our application allows nonprofits to post their events and communicate with volunteers through the platform itself. More importantly, “Seeds for Change” also utilizes a smartphone application for registered volunteers of the nonprofits to use. This allows nonprofits to effectively reach out and engage youth volunteers. We sincerely hope to enhance the capabilities of the 3rd Sector (nonprofits and Social Enterprises) in volunteer management to promote and grow the voluntarism scene in Hong Kong.

Biomass Briquettes Considering the fact that we are disposing tons of waste every day, why don’t we turn it into something useful? In the third world, they commonly use biomass briquettes as fuel. It’s easy to see the reason. The briquettes conserve material and generate easy energy. They are simply blocks of fuel made of dried biomass – dried organic products, mainly wood and grain. We want to introduce the biomass briquettes to Hong Kong. It’s easy to see how we can convert urban waste like waste paper, sawdust and breadcrumbs as our raw material. Working with an extremely low cost base, we can transform waste into a flexible and useful fuel with multiple uses e.g. barbecues and even electricity generation. The major aim of producing the biomass briquettes is environment protection, although it would also be easily commercially viable. We reduce the volume of solid waste and turn it into a clean and effective energy. We save trees by providing substitution for charcoal. We make use of worthless waste and raise awareness among the public. This can all be achieved by the natural way – biomass briquettes.
