Mental illness is much more common than you think. Would it surprise you that more than 450 million people around the world suffer from mental disorder? In Hong Kong, the figures are even more worrying. Around 30% of our population suffers from some form of mental illness – some of these being stress induced. Hong Kong ranked 84 among 131 countries in the Gross National Happiness Index, and 39% of employees rated their work stress as "high" to "very high". Unfortunately, many people still view mental illness as a taboo. An even more alarming picture emerges when we find that less than 10% of mental illness patients seek medical services. Despite this, HeArt Expresso, want to change how people see the mental illness through art.

HeArt Expresso is a social enterprise that provides a unique and fun “Art Jamming Therapy” service. Art therapy is a process which empowers people through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes. We help our customers to relieve stress, and at the same time empower people who have recovered from mental illnesses by employing them as facilitators. Through our online channel ”HeArt Cloud and Sales”, we reach out to the public by exhibiting and selling artworks to tell the stories of those who have gone through or are in the process of battling mental illnesses. Our goal is to raise people’s awareness on stressrelated mental illnesses, eradicate the stigma and build a more inclusive society.

WEDO GLOBAL 6

In Hong Kong, there is relatively low cultural tolerance towards South Asians due

A major problem in Hong Kong is that our society overlooks the plight of a

to cultural misunderstanding and a lack of communication, leading to tensions and conflicts among different races.

silent minority – the physically disabled. This is likely to be one of the main reasons why the disabled are often marginalized and misunderstood.

WEDO GLOBAL envisions a racial-barrier-free society. It aims to enhance cultural awareness and understanding towards South Asians by launching WEDO Discovery - a structured responsible travel program co-created and coimplemented with regional coordinator(s) in different countries.

Despite many awareness campaigns, many of us still do not fully comprehend the needs of the physically disabled. Since many of us have never lived our life in a wheelchair, we will never be able to really appreciate or empathize with the disabled.

Before going to Outbound WEDO Discovery, a Cultural Awareness Session will be conducted to provide basic information of cultural awareness for participants to be ready to experience cultural difference. Outbound WEDO Discovery includes 3 key aspects for participants to immerse themselves in South Asian culture: A) History; B) Nature and C) Community. Participants will have opportunities to visit various places to understand the history, interact with people in the community and experience how they live, eat, dress and travel around. This program aims to achieve a winwin situation to maximize the benefits to the participants as well as the local communities, minimize negative social impact, and help local people promote their genuine culture. As a follow-up activity, WEDO Discovery @ HK is a task-based travel program for Hong Kong Chinese to experience and understand more about South Asian culture and be connected with South Asians in Hong Kong. Participants will have the chance to communicate and know more about each other for building a harmonious society. WEDO GLOBAL provides a unique cultural experience to lead the real change and build genuine understanding among cultures.

To make matters worse, inadequate evaluations have been done on the life of the physically disabled and how inconvenient their lives can be. Unfortunately, this makes it more difficult to integrate the physically disabled with the rest of society. “Wheel-life” aims to improve the lives of the physically disabled by raising social awareness and resolving the daily dilemmas they encounter. Wheellife provides participants the chance to ‘experience LIFE in a WHEELchair’. This unique experience is the only way to experience the daily life of a physically disabled person. Also, Wheel-life encourages the general public to contribute to the people whose LIFE is in a WHEELchair.

Core service 2: “Willing to Build” - targets corporations and schools for team building activities. Participants have to acquire components of a wheelchair by completing various tasks and then using those components to build a wheelchair. The wheelchair built will then be donated to charity.

The challenge is to spread the belief of wearer responsibility and sustainability. This is why NovelTEES collects, recycles and transforms old tees, into brand new products such as tote bags, cushions and knitting bags. We want to spread our message and this can only be great for the environment and the future of Hong Kong. Production will be conducted through two main channels: • Educational DIY workshops: secondary school students will be taught by university student volunteers to up-cycle old tees into cushions and tote bags. The school students will benefit much through learning about recycling and our responsibilities to the environment. • Official production line: unemployed low-skilled workers can easily be provided with part-time or full-time employment by producing knitting bags, scarfs and rugs etc.

NovelTEES 8

Through the principles of wearer responsibility and sustainability, NovelTEES aspires to prompt reflection on the necessity of buying another tee. Through promoting the values of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ in workshops and products, NovelTEES looks forward to cultivating a common sense of respect to green life.

In this world where financial knowledge is minimal, costs are rising and financial resources are shrinking, the villain—Financial Ignorance—reigns. A 2012 survey by Visa ranked Hong Kong 24th out of 27 top economies in terms of the financial capabilities of its youth.

There is a huge need to help students better manage their money to cope with spiraling debts. Even though many training programs have tried to rescue students from the grasps of Financial Ignorance, they’re just not working. The world is waiting for a new kind of hero. One social platform will rise to the rescue, CASHIFY! Cashify combines education and entertainment to teach students to manage their money more effectively. Our sustainable and innovative model will empower students through in-person workshops and online games. Journeying through a series of campus-specific workshops and games in a parallel online world, heroesin-the-making will track personal finances and THUMP financial villains!

Hong Kong has many beautiful and green areas. However, we are often too

busy to enjoy a green life. Some of us would really love to plant flowers and vegetables and enjoy watching them grow. Although the problem is that having plants not only take up the very last space at home, but also brings insects or other hygiene problems. Our goal is simple - to attract more people to re-connect with nature. However, we need a modern solution that provides convenience and affordability, so that more of us can enjoy gardening activities.

OASES has re-designed the gardening experience to lower the threshold of planting and watering activities. The solution is an innovative combination of rooftop gardening on industrial buildings and a clever mobile app that activates a remote control system and does all the work for you. When customers use our mobile app, they will be able to trigger the watering system and photograph their planting boxes. Customers can even request a gardener to attend to their plants and do the weeding – all through their mobile phone. Through this new gardening experience, OASES aims to fulfill its social goals and social entrepreneurship ecology building. We sincerely hope to:

• Invite people to join the gardening world; • Encourage people to share the joy of gardening; • Make optimal use of building rooftops and create a greener Hong Kong.

Within recent years, two phenomena have become noticeable. The first is based on a famous quote from a local soap opera that “This city is dying”. This suggests that our unique cultures and identity of Hong Kong are disappearing, thereby making Hongkongers feel confused about their identity. The second phenomenon is that a number of travel spots are getting ever more commercialized. Therefore, tourists will find that they are not actually experiencing an authentic experience with local cultural elements to truly appreciate our community. Due to noticing these social phenomena, we have discovered a need for a new breed of travel agency. An agency aimed at consolidating the Hong Kong cultural identity for local people, while also promoting our true identity to foreigners. So, “Root and Growth” aims to address

this problem. The root represents our local cultures, where we wish for them to grow and pass from generation to generation. Our agency will mainly offer routes to experience the unique cultures of Hong Kong, e.g. Yuen Long Villages, and Central. Root and Growth has two uniquely distinctive features. First, senior citizens will be interviewed by our secondary school student helpers to collect hands-on experience of living in Hong Kong. Second, some other senior citizens will be recruited and trained to be tour guides to provide foreigners amazing travelling experiences. Through these interactions, local citizens and foreigners can have a deeper and more interesting discussion about Hong Kong cultures. We see a long lasting and bright future for Root and Growth, local culture and lots of foreign visitors!

Currently there are 110,000 elderly persons living alone in Hong Kong. Around 80% of them live alone and spend most of their time at home (HKSAR Census and Statistics Department). Therefore, we can see that the lack of on-site care for them is a serious problem. For example, as Sina News reported, in June 2013, an 80-year-old man fell at home and he kept knocking on the door for help. The next day, his neighbors found him, but his health was already at risk.

This should be of significant alarm for those of us with elderly relatives. Elderly people living alone might encounter accidents due to chronic disease. But the problem is that they cannot be immediately found or cared for, due to lack of custody. For example, falling is one of those accidents. An escape to the countryside is often regarded as too much of an effort. However, Aquaponics is a new way for a taste of farming and has the potential to become wildly popular. So wherever you live or work, growing your own vegetables can now be a reality and hobby for everyone to enjoy, especially the elderly. You can choose from a large scale or home scale farm. So it’s easy to see how an Aquaponics farm can cultivate an agricultural concept in Hong Kong and propagate organic and safe food.

Hong Kong has roughly 92,200 people who have hearing difficulties. This is certainly a sizable number, but are we doing enough to help them communicate with the rest of society? Only one school exists for deaf people. Only a few NGOs provide services and recreational activities for the hearing-impaired. Only they know how difficult and different life is compared to the rest of us. However, one activity stands out as being ideal in helping to bridge our divides - dance. In fact, dance has long been a form of communication between people through sharing the same moves and actions. Dance can not only provide entertainment and satisfaction to the hearing impaired, but also act as a platform for both the physically fit and hearing impaired to

connect and better understand each other’s world, leading to better social inclusion. The hearing-impaired cannot hear music, but they can feel the rhythm and beat. Project in Silence is close to producing a sound system that converts the sound wave of music into vibrations, making it easier for the hearing-impaired to feel the rhythm and beat - and therefore dance to it. Project in Silence seeks to provide dance courses for the hearingimpaired and eventually form a professional dance team. We are also planning to hold workshops and seminars in schools, universities or any other societies to allow the physically fit to share the dance experience with the hearing-impaired. After all, dance is a wonderful way to communicate.

Fast screening solution Our solution is to develop a Screening Service Network and provide initial screening for diabetic retinopathy. With the new retinal imaging system, patients will experience a fast diagnosis and this will greatly enhance the process efficiency. In the long term, we aim to raise public awareness on diabetic retinopathy and further minimize its harm.

Benefits of early screening In fact, visual loss can be limited by early detection. Eye screening is the key to diabetes care, since the early-and-medium stages of diabetic retinopathy usually occurs without symptoms or pain. Only through on-going screening, can the condition be caught early. Early treatment can prevent damage to sight.

Affordable service

PolyU

In order to increase the affordability of this service, we promise to offer an affordable low price, since everyone should have an equal opportunity to take good care of their eyes. Also, a medical fund will be established to subsidize those who cannot afford to pay for treatment, especially the underprivileged.

We will train secondary school graduates to perform the joyful and relaxing Hula at venues throughout Hong Kong. The youth will then have an enjoyable way of being employed, while Hong Kong will experience a new activity to reduce stress through Hula. Hula … in Hong Kong? With the great support from the Hong Kong International Hula Association, we think it can work! We want to show and tell everyone about it! We look forward to sharing with you. Let’s dance!
