Editorial Forward
T
here are countless passers-by brushing against us every day, perhaps endless throughout our life. They are neither our crushes nor one with blood relationship for us to remember their faces. However, a movement, a breath or a gesture is never enough to depict the slightness that you can memorize someone you love, are loyal to or can dedicate yourself to. If you presume that person already exists, do devote yourself entirely, unceasingly and unlimitedly to his or her sheer bliss, with no hesitation or a second thought. Believe me, you have already griped someone precious, if not invaluable, who becomes the only one to catch your eyes for all eternity. At this moment, like Robert Frost’s Devotion, do devote yourself to one like the wash of the water against the shore actively, but always washing identically at the same curve and shape eternally; like the earth’s devotion, spins for the sun’s rising and setting steadily, to deliver warmth to all his creation; like the moon’s devotion, waxes and wanes monthly, for those miles apart can share the moonlight symbolizing reunion. Let me owe the accomplishment of this newsletter to many, who devoted your words to this theme, a theme which shines uniquely in every human being. Editor, Karen Sy 4

ENGLISH SOCIETY UP-CLOSE
Introduction of Executive Committee members and In Retrospect
Davisson Lam
Chairperson
Executive Committee members This year, the motto of our Society is “The future is for those who do and dare”. To put our motto into practice, our Executive Committee members, as follows, will strive for a promising future for our Society members.
Being a curious cat that I am, I just like to dabble in anything and everything interesting. Sports, music and occasional light reading are all part of my wide array of interests. I enjoy staying with my friends and meeting new ones, there’s nothing better than hanging out with friends and grabbing a drink or two at weekends. I hope to further explore my interests in my university life, and so far I’m enjoying it a lot. I consider myself tough and confident most of the time, seldom flinching in the face of hardships. However when the temperature rise above 25oC I do just melt into a puddle of laziness, and hence I believe air conditioning is the most important invention of all times. The future is for those who do and dare. 5

Many people are deceived by my deadly earnest appearance, believing that I’m a quiet person. I’m not at all! Although I love dodging at home, evading from everything and enjoying my ‘self ’ time, I love chitchatting. Admittedly, I am quite uproarious.
Sammi Leung Internal Vice-chairperson
I have always felt a need to be prepared for whatever situation I have found myself in. I’m not afraid to be alone. ‘Not until you are lost do you begin to understand yourself ’ is my favourite quote. I believe in the formidable ability one possesses when no guidance is offered, only loss can assist you in undergoing self-discovery. I am terrified of blood. Browsing the Youtube fitness channel and follow suit at home is the only time I engage in exercise. My dream is to live and sit in the window ledge of an Austrian-style house with my fluffy pajamas every day, relaxing, reading and neglecting the money materialistic world and real life.

General Secretary
To everyone, the first impression of me should be a giggling girl with her white teeth on or a sunshine girl with tanned skin. That’s me, a passionate Leo who is enthusiastic about sports and all kinds of outdoor activities. The moment when I feel sweat drifts from my neck to chest or when I feel sunshine is crazed on my shoulders and arms, is just amazing, fantastic and incredible. Jogging, playing squash and hiking is always on my list of favourite sports. Also, any kinds of excitement are more than welcome to me, especially those which drive me to the air, like turbo drop and roller coaster. Yet, all these need to be enjoyed with companions who I draw strength from, who I treasure a lot in my life. I like being with my besties, even we are just simply wandering on the street and talking void of content.
Through this year of becoming an ExCo of a student society, I hope to learn to be mature and more sophisticated, so that I am capable to shoulder more responsibilities on my own, but not being a burden to the others. 6

To be honest, I do not have a single idea of Photoshop in high school, not to mention using any filters or collages. It is an intensive yet fulfilling year to undergo numerous sleepless nights with a dim hope that your persistent effort would pay off. My favourite hobby is reading non-fiction (call me a nerd). I stayed in Eslite days and nights with cups of taro pearls bubble tea last summer. My latest favourite bookstore would be a second-hand bookstore located in Central called Flow Bookshop. It is highly recommended for book lovers who enjoy exploring exquisite masterpieces.I also enjoy watching thought-provoking movies to strive for work-life balance. Imitation Games, Begin Again, Interstellar and Love, Rosie are on my must-see checklist recently. My favourite dog would be pug, though it’s not in the mainstream. The future is for those who do and dare. 7

Although I am one of the Executive Committee members of this session, I am not particularly good at English. There’s why I became one of the Executive Committee members with hopes that I can miraculously improve my English, or even get an A in CAES. I play the guitar, some sports and computer games. Being part of this student society is definitely a challenge, with endless work and sleepless nights. But none of these is comparable of having a group of close friends, who are also your colleagues. After all, these challenges seemed not that tough when I was working with my ‘’jong yaus’’. It’s been a great half year. I believe the remaining tenure of ours would be even better.

He is the one who has no idea for what he is doing all day long, but the one who dares to create and provoke new thoughts. He is the one who loves smiling and bringing happiness to people around him, yet the one who is sentimental and sensitive. He is the one who loves dreaming and always wondering how our world should be. He is the one who wants to explore something new and understands diversified cultures. He never makes a detail plan before he travels. He never drafts before he draws. He yearns for a fruitful life, with no gossips and scandals. He wants to be someone he wants to be, but not someone the world wants him to be. To enjoy life. To dream big. To smile. That’s me, Thomas Ng, Promotion Secretary of the Society of this session.
Stephanie Chan Being timid, it is hardly surprising that most people will think I am quiet at first sight. Most of the time, I appeared to like being alone and somehow being inapproachable. This probably stems from my waywardness and me always being sentimental. Yet, in the deepest part of my soul, I enjoy the companionship of my friends and am a good listener.

When I was asked how my ideal day looks like, my ideal day consists of reading and watching Chinese costume drama. I love to read and I enjoy being a solitary reader, for without any disturbance, I can be always absorbed in my book and my own thoughts. Various kinds of books I love, but I always have a special regard for scientific fictions and books about royal families in ancient China. With them, I always become a ferocious reader. I have no clear goals for my future yet, but I do have a dream: to find a place to call my own.

Ernest Wong When I was told to write a paragraph describing myself, I wanted to write something to intrigue you. I wondered, after finally settled down and recovered from those countless deadlines, what exactly I should disclose, but once I did start, my mind went completely utterly blank. It was like the moment of a split second that I suddenly realized I was just another man, nothing special, nothing interesting. Like all ordinary youngsters, I wake up around late morning, rush to school, attend lectures (well, or at least, most), do assignments, and read. Nothing special, nothing interesting. Personality-wise, I love laughing hysterically, and I easily succumb to my emotions.
Nothing special, nothing interesting. As for my university life, I love idling away my day in Chi Wah Learning Commons. I somehow became an Executive Committee member, and I am a social sciences student. Right. I am a half-blood prince. Again, nothing special, nothing interesting. Wait. What? No one does all these? Anyway. My name is Ernest. An atypical 18-year-old soul, I always answer to it however crazy it sometimes gets.
Cathy Tsui I am an active and talkative girl who is Welfare Secretary fond of (window) shopping, jogging, playing badminton and travelling. I seldom listen to music, but if I do, I prefer listening to country music like Hank Williams and pop music like Johnny Cash. I also like to drink with friends to get ahold of them, but honestly, I’m a light drinker; ethanol gives me a flushed face. The country I have longed for paying a visit for years is Switzerland where the mountain scenery is stunning! Unlike most of the girls who indulge in sweet, I can’t resist to eat food which tastes extremely sour. Therefore, tomato is my favorite food and dishes with tomatoes can definitely catch my attention. Born in a harmonious family, I treasure the time I spent with them, who are the most precious people to me.

In Retrospect The term of office of English Society, A.A.H.K.U.S.U., Session 2014-2015 has passed nearly half. Over the past 6 months, our cabinet, constituted of 9 Executive Committee members, has endeavored to uphold the spirit of the Society and to serve our members. It’s now time for us to review what we have done for the past few months.

Annual Bazaar
Transporting tables, placing products, people walking by would buy them all. As easy as it seems, this is the image of bazaar in many minds. But it is definitely not our Annual Bazaar. Just like the feature of the newsletter, our Annual Bazaar was all about devotion. We devoted three weeks to staying at booth, and more than a month preparing for it. Bazaar is the only fund-raising event this year. The profits wiould be used in organizing other events of the Society, like publishing this newsletter and organizing the orientation program. That’s the reason why the Bazaar was so important, as if we failed to earn enough, it would be much difficult to organize the upcoming ones. The stress is genuine, long-lasting and encircling in every one of us. We hve discussed which products we would be selling, which shop we should have a consignment contract with, the venue, duration, duty roster, in meetings throughout the two months before the Bazaar commenced.
* Products we sold in the Bazaar
* Customers were looking for their favourites.
* ExCos were promoting the goods enthusiastically.

Not only did we earn enough for the upcoming events, but we managed to strengthen our relationships as if we are a tiny family. * Mega sale offered on the final few days

Welfare Week
The Welfare Week of English Society, A.A.H.K.U.S.U. was held from 9th to 13th February this year. Promoting the welfare of our members has long been one of our Society’s objectives and we would like to continue the vigorous efforts of our past cabinets. We were so pleased that we successfully acquired over 20 companies as our sponsors, providing a wide range of products for the event. This year, 200 bags of delicate welfare packs were distributed, in which sweets, beverages, TIME magazines and coffee powder were included. Members also participated in a lucky draw, with cosmetics, sparkling drinks and more as awards. Despite the difficulties in searching for and convincing various companies to be our sponsors, the general response which was highly satisfactory from our members made our effort worthy at all. We are looking forward to serving you again in the coming year!
* Eye-catching promotion for Welfare Week
* Welfare packs were ready at booth.

ENGLISH FESTIVAL
English Festival has a series of academic events which aimed at promoting English learning atmosphere on our campus. This year, under the theme Rewind to the 20th Century: The Idea of Modernity, four events were held in total, namely Film Appreciation, Book Fair, Academic Talk and Academic Dialogue.
1 FilM APPRECIATION
5 MARCH 2015 Marking the commencement of our English Festival this year, the Film Appreciation was successfully held on 5th March in Global Lounge. In respond to the theme of our English Festival that aimed at promoting works of modernist writers this year, the film Mrs. Dalloway, adapted from a novel sharing the same title written by the famous modernist writer, Virginia Woolf, was screened.
* Audience were enjoying the refreshment before the commentment of the flim.
This film addresses the main character, Mrs. Dalloway‘s preparation for her party that she would throw in the evening and throughout the film, the image of the live story of Mrs. Dalloway and the interwar social structure were constructed. Though we encountered some technical problems during the screening of the film, the film still received very positive response by our audience whom we interviewed at the end of our event.

2 BOOK FAIR After our film appreciation, the following event of our English Festival was Book Fair, which was held in the Union Building G/F Foyer. To promote the habit of reading among students, both first – hand and second – hand books under the theme were available at our booth at favorable prices, which attracted many university readers. Books under the theme “Modernism” were picked from Swidon, the supplier of first-hand books. Also, renowned novels, poem collections and a number of autobiographies were available.

All second – hand books in our Book Fair were chosen by our cabinet in a small and exquisite second – hand bookshop named Flow Bookstore located in Central. The shop owner greeted us in an affable manner and was extremely kind to us. Many of our Executive Committee members got themselves some pleasant books to support our Book Fair as well.

24 MARCH 2015
This year, our Academic Talk was successfully held in Happy Park with the theme Becoming Modern. We were honored to have Professor Douglas Kerr, Dean of Faculty of Arts, as our guest speaker, to share with us the transition into modernity, which is sometimes called Modernism. The talk was thought – provoking for Professor Kerr introduced how the style and content of western literature had changed dramatically in this period. The talk also attracted many passers - by to join us in the middle of our event to explore Modernism together.
* Prof. Douglas Kerr and our Academic Secretary * The talk was held in Sun Yat Sen Place.
* Audience were concentrated on Prof. Kerr’s speech.
Another thing that was worth mentioning was the setting up of the backdrop. Though setting up the backdrop was for certain a tiring job, we were all very devoted to this job since this was for many of us, the very first time ever to use screwdrivers, that we found this job more fun than demanding!
* Setting up of the backdrop was demanding!

4 Academic Dialogue
27 March 2015
With the Academic Dialogue, our English Festival drew to a perfect end. We were very much honoured to have Professor Evelyn Chan from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Dr. Allan Johnson from the City University of Hong Kong as our guests in our dialogue to share with us on Modernism. After some brief introduction, our guests began to explain to us the stream of consciousness technique, a narrative mode which was commonly used by modernist writers in the 20th century, in Mrs. Dalloway. The learning of the use of stream of consciousness technique made us even more awed at the skills used by Virginia Woolf, which presented the thought – process of the characters naturally. After the introduction of stylistics stream of consciousness, our guests moved to talk about a poem written by W. B. Yeats, a distinguished Irish poet and modernist writer in the 20th century. Our guests did close reading with us on the poem “The Scholars” and discussed with us the relationship among readers, writers and literary scholars in contemporary literature. The event ended with our guests discussing with us their reasons of studying Modernism as well as their future prospects.

Devotion 20
English Society, A.A.H.K.U.S.U., Session 2014-2015
Our Thoughts FEATURE Davisson LAM To me, the first thing that comes across my mind is a question to myself. What am I devoted to? This is a question everyone has to ask themselves in introspection every once in a while. I believe devotion is the key to success in life, one cannot succeed in their career, their relationships or their hobbies if they are not willing to devote effort and time toward their goals. Michael Jordan would not have been the insurmountable giant in the history of sports had he not devote so much time in training and working towards being a better player. Edison would not appear on our textbooks had he not devoted himself to endless studies that could improve our life. Even Kevin Hart would not be famous had he not devote himself to improving life for his family.
It is not easy finding something in life valuable enough for us to devote entirely, but when we do, do not let go.
Sammi LEUNG ‘Devotion’ seems to be an easy word. Everyone knows how to devote. However, in this society, genuine devoting is luxurious. Once I told my friends about my devotion in music, what I received is flabbergasted faces, together with questions like: ‘Are you going to coast along in music field?’ ‘ What kind of job are you going to apply?’ I know what they were coming from, but at the same time I have realized people losing passion in dreams in this materialistic world. Linking devotion to economic benefits has become a common practice to mankind. I am proud that I have a dream that I can devote to, no matter whether the devotion can ‘feed’ me in the future. Suffice it to say, rather than telling my grandchildren about my lackluster story of devotion to work in order to buy a flat, I prefer the story about my worthwhile life devotion to various fulfilling music experiences. I revel in telling people my captivation and devotion to music. The selfless but graceful feeling with natural impulse to put your time and effort in something, with no care for returning, which is viscerally felt when you are truly in love with it. I feel fairly complacent that I have found it. The future is for those who do and dare. 21

Our Thoughts, Creative Writings and Recommendations
Devotion refers to one’s love, loyalty and enthusiasm for a person or a society. Allegedly, one always has something or someone that they are devoted to. Here, we present what our ExCo think about Devotion.
Feature
Kenny Lee
Heather KWAn
I would like to think devotion as trying your very best to perfect one thing. My latest devotion is this first year university life. Being part of the Society’s Executive Committee, studying, living in a hall, meeting new people, these are the things I have done to make my university life as fruitful as possible. I would not consider myself excelling in all my different identities in HKU, but I am trying my best. I think this attitude is what devotion means to me.
Which legendary figure would you first associate with devotion? Is it visionary Alan Turing, who invented computer to decode messages during wartime, or anonymous students who stay in Admiralty day and night to earnestly strive for a universal suffrage?
‘’
Devoting yourself to things hard enough so you will not regret afterwards. There were other things I devoted to in the past. Among them, my greatest devotion was the year I spent preparing for the DSE, not as an ordinary F.6 student, but as a repeater. I worked and studied so hard that I paved my way to where I am now. My devotion to the exam changed me into a better person. I am now willing to take more responsibilities, being more loyal to the commitments I promised to make.
22
These figures are not the first ones who come into my mind. Surprisingly, it is a 27-year-old Filipino domestic helper. She is called Xyza Cruz Bacani. Her experience echoes with a speech delivered by Emma Watson, “I’ve found that ultimately, if you truly pour your heart into what you believe in, even if it makes you vulnerable, amazing things can and will happen.” Driven by her pure devotion to photography, amazing things did happen. Xyza Cruz Bacani won a prestigious Magnum Foundation Human rights scholarship, and would become a student of New York University (Yes! It is NYU!). Her passion towards photography blossomed since she was in college. Since then, She persistently devotes her leisure time to photography. By bringing along a Fujifilm digital camera with her, she captures priceless moments. These include sympathetic stories of domestic helpers as well as black-and-white depictions of Occupy Central’s movement.

If you don’t know what is meant by devotion, look at yourself. Think of what you are doing in your daily life. Think carefully why you are doing so and who you are doing so for. As a conclusion, you are devoting. Basically, devotion is not a word that is distanced from us. We devote in every single part of our lives. Sometimes, our devotion can be small and subtle which makes us feel we have done nothing. For example, when you are reading my words, you are devoting your time to read. And sometimes, our devotion can be really big and significant. In October 2014, the Umbrella Movement took place and there were a lot of us going out and voicing our opinion. We all devoted ourselves into social movements and we hoped to make a change through our devotion. Devotion relates to responsibility. Only when you think you have responsibility you are willing to devote. To me, I would like to devote my very best to enjoy and live my life to the fullest. I think what worth devoting is what makes me feel happy and satisfied with my life, and most importantly, myself as part of society I am in.
I always ask myself the question repeatedly: what is devotion to me?
Don’t stop devoting, trust ourselves.
I believe devotion is a sacred act and is crucial to one.
To me, devotion is certainly a powerful word to be held in reverence, a word to be held in awe, for devotion is an emotion that everyone is born innate, yet not everyone can accomplish. Only those who have impassioned attachment can experience the joy it brings. To those whom I am acquainted with, it may seem I have little to devote to, due to the fact that I am shy and I hardly show interest in anything. Yet, I am devoted to my life itself. I always make good use of every minute to enrich myself, stimulate myself intellectually and enjoy my life. I love my family and friends dearly and our relationships are affectionate. Longing for a simple and quiet life, my life rolled out adventureless till now. Yet, in the future, I hope to encounter more challenges, instead of staying always in my comfort zone. Longing for a life with passion and making even better use of my time is ever my goal of life.
Having something or someone you are devoted to is like adding a relish to your existence. Without devotion, one has only a body without soul.
The future is for those who do and dare. 23

I do not always pride myself on being a devoted person but when I do, I proudly recall a period of time in my life in which I went all-out playing the piano. It all started when I was around 5 years old, when I had my very first piano lesson. The sown seeds for passion in music grew slowly and quietly with swiftly passing time. Countless days sitting in front of the piano and myriad scores I read and practice told a story of my adventure in the world of majors and minors, sharps and flats, legato and staccato, and ups and downs.
Have you ever contributed to a relationship bringing you so much laughter and love? Have you been so devoted to a hobby which leads you to a fantasy world from the hustle and bustle of a city? Have you ever set yourself a challenge, to which you get so committed, making you feel so satisfied? If you do, that means you have enjoyed the gift of devotion.
On my way to success undoubtedly stand impediments, and those obstacles often drag you down. There were times that I refused to attend piano lessons, as well as times that I shed tears because of my fear and loathe for the difficult pieces. Of course, those feelings were merely my reluctance to acknowledge my weaknesses, and mostly they were not genuine. At the end of the day the shed tears fed my dream and rejuvenated me, and I put even more efforts into the beautiful white and black keys. At that time I was around 16, attempting the Grade 8 Examination. With chills and nervousness I somehow finished it gracefully with satisfactory results. This was the first time that I was truly proud of myself, very proud. My love and passion for music and the piano manifest the importance of devotion, and I would never forget that devoted spirit of mine. 24
Being so devoted to achieving goals or challenges makes me improve. For instance, I was once not interested in jogging. In an attempt to get healthier, however, I set myself a goal: go jogging twice a week. With my persistence, it was achieved eventually. I realized that devotion not only makes me feel so contented but also increases my insistence on meeting further challenges in life. Furthermore, my devotion to my family life brings me great pleasure. Some people are so reluctant to devote to any human relationship. However, I have long believed that the more committed you are to a relationship, the more happiness you would find in life. Instead of burying myself into paper work and jobs, I am fond of spending time on my family. I feel like there are people in this world I value so much, which is one of my impetuses to live a better life. Let’s experience the gift of devotion and you will learn so much out of your expectation!

CREATIVE WRITINGS Written by various gifted authors, this section presents their “Devotion” to showing us readers the stories of their minds.
Piano
Piano. The sound of the piano. Two hands flying swiftly and elegantly over the keyboard. An angel with black surface singing, in the year of 2001. I took a timid step and peered into the room through the windowed door. The beautiful instrument was right there, chanting melodies that reached into my heart and melted it into nothing. I stood watching with widened eyes and baited breath, as the pianist’s fingers landed on the keys so lightly that she might not have touched anything at all. It was the most magnificent scene I had ever seen, and it stunned me speechless. When my mother finally found me in this quiet corner and dragged me away from the music room, I was yet to recover from my amazement. It took me quite a while to find my voice. Before I knew it, my heart spoke. “I want to learn to play the piano, Mummy.” Naturally, she was shocked. “What did you say?” “May I learn to play the piano, Mummy?” “Why would you make such a request?”
She frowned down at me, pondering over my request. The clock went tick, tock, tick, tock, tick, tock… At last, she spoke again. “Have you thought this through very carefully?” “Yes, Mummy.” “Bear in mind that this will only be an extra-curricular activity. Your ultimate goal is to enter the university. Will you be able to keep up with the schoolwork if I allow you to have piano lessons?” “I believe so, Mummy.” “Once you start learning, I will not allow you to quit. It will be part of your life. You cannot give up halfway through.” “Yes, Mummy.” “Do you know it is very expensive to learn a musical instrument?” I hesitated, my brain was catching up with my heart. Even at that age I understood the tough financial situation my family had always been in. However, looking back, I never quite found out how much sacrifice my parents have made to spare that sum of money. The future is for those who do and dare. 25

“Because I like the sound of it, and I want to be like that lady when I grow up. Gorgeous.” I pointed to the direction of the music room.
“Expensive or not, I will not give up in the middle of the way, and this can be my talent when I get older. Isn’t that a good thing, Mummy?”
Feature
My mother considered it carefully. “You are right, that means you may become a piano teacher and earn a lot.”
I didn’t respond.
A week after, that occasion she announced that I was in for the community centre’s piano-learning scheme, which targeted at grassroots in the nearby public housing estates. It definitely cost less than the market price, and the teachers were obviously not as qualified. Nonetheless, everything was fine. So at the age of six, I started learning to play the piano.
Last December I turned nineteen.

I haven’t touched the piano for two
Used to be, I devoted all my free time to practise the piano. Everyday after school, the piles of homeworks were finished in a flash so I could spend the rest of the evening brushing up my musical skills. Other kids might be screaming for a chance to watch TV or hang out in the playground, but all I wanted was to stay in front of my piano and let the lovely sound carry my soul away. Once I sat down in front of the instrument, not even an avalanche could move me. 26
I took one piano exam every single year so pretty soon I was several grades ahead of the other children in the community centre. They would work on pieces just for fun and for musical appreciation, but my mother would deemed it as a waste of time and forbid me to do so. As such, my tutor and I dwelled on the same three exam pieces for twelve months until the day of the assessment date, then the cycle went on again. My effort paid off; the accumulating certificates marked my progress. From time to time I would catch myself frowning or sighing in frustration, still I urged myself on because my mother would smile proudly and say, “I’m glad to see your devotion in music! Just wait till you get into college and you will have time to give piano lessons and make money.” Gradually, I began to question this so-called “devotion”. I was not sure anymore who and what I was learning the piano for. Was putting in all my free time and effort truly mean I love what I was doing? Or was I acting blindly and mechanically while brainwashing myself ? The little girl peering through the windowed door simply wanted to be that gorgeous somebody, making that stunning siren-like music for herself and for any others who would enjoy it. She did not intend to use piano as a tool for bringing wealth, or to make it just another school subject with the sole purpose of getting high marks in the exams. Over the years I had become a robot, and as soon as I realized it, I gave up playing the piano up. Sometimes I get the urge to pick up from where I left, yet a thick wall stands in the way and forces me to retreat. In

some way, my promises are not broken. I have passed one level of the assessment for piano professionals and got my Performance Diploma. I have entered The University of Hong Kong studying my favourite subject. I have also found my life goal and am making my way towards there – it is just not related to music.
My fingers move on their own, my hands flying swiftly and elegantly over the keyboard. Out of the corner of my eye I can see a little girl watching with widened eyes and baited breath, stunned and speechless. The angel with black surface chants its melodies once more.
Piano. The sound of the piano.
I walk over and stare at what I used to call an angel. All of a sudden, I am back in the quiet corner outside the music room, the beautiful strings of notes reaching out from the top of my memory lane. I push open the windowed door and sit down in front of the instrument, running my fingers over the keyboard. No, the years of hard work are not in vain – they have simply been misplaced. I started out with burning passion for piano music, and along the way misconception and expectation from my mother overruled my own feelings. Now it is time to put every note, every rest and every clef back in line. I will do what I love, not for monetary reward, The future is for those who do and dare. 27

I should feel guilty. The years of hard work are now in vain, both my piano teachers’ and mine. It violates filial piety to not repay my mother in the way she wants, as in to become a piano teacher and gain back all the lesson fees paid. Inwardly,Deep down inside I guess I am guilty, otherwise my mind wouldn’t keep recalling wandering over to the instrument that still sits in the middle of the living room, and my dad’s favourite sofa that has long been sold to make way for the piano, and the day when the ignorant six-year-old girl made her request with wide determined eyes, in the year of 2001.

by Chermaine Lee ‘From a Wallflower to a Beating Heart’ Like thin air, I was invisible, even my heart was beating, my limbs were moving. Who was I? Without any sign of living. I existed. Piles of movies and books, I told everyone I loved solitude, like a boat on a sea. I used to call it ‘romantic floating’. Take me where life brings me! But I felt lost. I felt retired, yet without any exciting memories. Did someone say ‘life is a dream’? Exactly. Until the moment I met you. I slowly, slowly opened my eyes. I am finally awake. Air feels fresher. Coffee tastes bitterer yet sweeter. Songs sound more exciting. That moment. I know. I have found it. My center in life, my passion in universe.

Devoted to the ideal, not the idol. by Robert Carless
Sherlock was devoted to knowledge and the truth, a nobler pursuit, but like he, I question the proof. Some say devotion, but I say obsession is what he had He would throw his life away on a puzzle and be glad Cocaine and nicotine were his tools to solve the case And frankly, they turned him into more of a basketcase. Sherlock was a fool, who did not realize what mattered Of friends and family, till he lay dying and battered. The list can go on, but the truth of the matter is this Devotion can give our lives meaning, and grant us bliss But find a cause that truly matters to you – an ideal. Devote yourself not to the idol, and prepare your ordeal. Romeo and Sherlock may be misguided in my eye, But none can argue that they truly did not try Martin says that “words are wind, and action is steel”. Whatever your cause, see it through, don’t bend And be proud of whatever happens in the end. I am, for writing this. Are you?

Romeo was devoted to Rosaline at the start of the play, Yet we all know it changed when Juliet came into play He was devoted to Rosaline… till something better came Is that what devotion means, that it is just a game? Some may say it was sweet the way he died for his girl, But he only knew her so briefly, it makes me want to hurl. Romeo was a lovesick fool, who killed himself over a stranger If anything the story teaches us how love is a danger.

‘See you later!’ Maggie uttered these words with the most cheerful manner she could manage, yet she was sure she would not date with this guy with not even a mini cooper again. Maggie said goodbye to her date and shrugged unconsciously. She never lacked admirers, who were eager to send her flowers, chocolates and even a real cat once. Studying in the most famous university in this city, Maggie only felt more lost than ever. She was always the easy-going type who had little preference in anything. When her parents urged her to find a rich and good-looking husband, she learnt all the skills to do it. It’s not a difficult task to her. Yet, among all those techniques and conversations, she seldom derived any pleasure from them. Every day seemed to be more than boring to her. Maggie’s biggest achievement in life is the bunch of admirers behind her. She knew exactly how and when to flirt with a secretly winking eye, slightly tapping on a guy’s shoulder, leaning over to make a touch and even the Flamengo dance moves that could turn any guys on. No, studying or arts or sports are never her thing, if you exclude sex. It’s the only activity that she enjoyed since the intimate connection of physical bodies made her feel secure and warm. Still, she could not talk to anyone around her because the conservative culture 30
in Hong Kong towards sex was stifling. She would be called a ‘whore’ if she confided this into anyone. She was a loner because she was not able to share her excitement in sex with anyone. After months of unemployment, her admirers started to go away. She knew she had to gain a profession. But which one? Yes, she received the offers by several companies but all of them were outright ‘boring’ to her. At last, she did apply for a profession. It’s a house prostitute in Wan Chai. She was finally able to share her details and passion with her roommate, Louise. They bought condoms together, had lunch while exchanging details about their work. They felt professional and fulfilled. ‘Maggie! What…what are you doing here?’ Tobius, one of Maggie’s longterm admirer, was more than shocked to see her on the sex worker-oriented street. ‘Oh Tobius, I work here. It’s more than a glass of red wine and flowers if you want to have sex with me,’ said Maggie. ‘Mag…you shouldn’t do this to yourself. Don’t you have passion in life that you can be devoted to? Why are you doing this to yourself ?’ frowned Tobius. ‘This is my passion in my life. Have you ever tried waking up, feeling so empty? I lost the appetite for life. You wouldn’t understand! Now, I wake up every day feeling so blessed to be able to do a job I

He thought Maggie would understand his clinging to the US army. The United States of America was the most magnificent country in the world. To him, nothing was more important than the nation. He just had to go back, doesn’t she understand? Why hasn’t she waited for me? At this moment, he realized he missed the point in life. Nation was such an abstract concept. The days of being a soldier came into his mind. He remembered shooting the kids just because they might be dangerous. The group violence towards the weak Iran man. His blood creeped the whole floor and haunted him for the whole night. The searing scream of a young girl was sexually assaulted by the middle-aged general, under the name of ‘inspection’. He could no longer feel his heart now. Not anymore. How was he supposed to feel when his devotion went to the wrong direction?
Tobius wondered if he should have chosen to stay with Maggie instead. Well, never mind. She had never truly loved him. A few months later, Tobius met Maggie on the street again. Maggie was wearing high school uniform and a ponytail. Tobius stopped his iPod. ‘Why are you wearing this? You should have graduated already,’ said Tobius. ‘The customer asked for cosplay sex. It is getting more and more popular these days. It is so fun! I spent my whole night writing the script last night. I can’t wait to do the play. You look very different though, Tobius. You look very muscular now.’ ‘I am now a sports coach in the fitness center just around the corner. What’s funny is that I feel much more peaceful and fulfilled when I concentrate on teaching instead of sweating over winning. I don’t have to rely on the army or the nation to feel great about myself,’ explained Tobius with a smile. ‘That’s really cool! I have to say you are much more attractive now,’ exclaimed Maggie. Tobius smiled shyly. Maggie had never looked at him like that. He kept staring at her back when she walked away. She was more ‘alive’ now. Maggie, however, had no time for retrospect but had to rush to the hotel. The future is for those who do and dare. 31

really like. What do YOU know of me back then? Nothing! Nothing!’ Tobius was dumbfounded. Maggie was one of the most charming ex-girlfriends he had had before. If he hadn’t had to go back to the US for studying university, he would have married her. Tobius was always the winner of any competitions. He was physically very attractive and it didn’t cost him much effort to capture a girl’s heart. He had a flair for sports so the badges that kept coming were no longer able to excite him. Of course he would chase after the Maggie, who was elegantly surrounded by a bunch of guys.

When she arrived the room, she saw a pale man playing the piano with the saddest expression one could imagine. ‘Amadeus?’ called Maggie. Amadeus could not hear a sound when he was playing. His life revolved around being a pianist. Composing songs and playing Mozart’s music were his activities every day, peppered with occasional recitals. Maggie recognized him. Amadeus was the highly acclaimed ‘second Mozart’ by the critics. His music talent was extraordinary. Yet, observing his sadness, she wondered if he enjoyed playing music. Finally, Amadeus finished the last note on the piano and noticed Maggie. He didn’t say anything and walked to Maggie. He hugged her like a kid who needed his mother. Maggie was so shocked that she could not utter the line as planned in her script.
did not expect the required high school appearance to be for such a romantic reason. She imagined, he must have felt happy when he was fully devoted to music but after a while, he realized how lonely he was and nobody was there to share his life. She decided to be his friend from now on. Maggie appeared at every recital and sharing sessions by Amadeus, showing her full support. Amadeus told her his every dream and every funny childhood memory. He became more talkative and his songs started to get out of the blue. One day Amadeus pulled out a ring and kneed on the ground. Maggie was blank for a while and could not stop laughing. “Amadeus, I am just being a friend here. I love my profession and I am not ready to change it for anyone,” said Maggie.
At the end of the night, Amadeus didn’t even touch her. He seemed to prefer talking about his life. He merely had any acquaintances other than those with business purposes.
Amadeus looked embarrassed but he decided to be brave and accept her refusal.
“I miss high school life. I didn’t go to school enough because I had to practice. But I really regret not enjoying my time there. I was close with a girl and I had secret feelings for her. Can you believe it? I was so busy that I didn’t even have time to date! It was not even a life,” said Amadeus.
They hugged for a long time and went their separate ways. There’s a saying: Love is two people who don’t know how to be alone. When we start to love our lives and devote our full selves into our dreams, we don’t feel lonely anymore. What’s your passion in life?
“I appreciate your passion in life, Maggie. I will always miss you.”
Nodding her head occasionally, Maggie secretly felt sorry for him. She 32

Recommendations of Art Works
Over the years, abounding artworks have created under the theme “Devotion”. In this section, recommendations of various artworks on the theme will be presented to you. Let’s start the journey with us! BOOKS
Being the one and only works of Emily Brontë, this novel totally depicted how EDITOR’S much a man could devote to his true love in CHOICE the last resort, through revenge and harming, to those who had no relationship with this vigorous love affair. Wuthering Heights, where the story unfolds, is the farmhouse which loaded all the sensations of characters, from benevolence to hatred, from jealousy to forgiveness, also in the presence of the genuine affection from Heathcliff to Mr. Earnshaw’s daughter, Catherine. The story encircled with Heathcliff ’s entire life which began with his adoption by Mr. Earnshaw and the contempt received from the children living in Wuthering Heights. It then proceeded to the love affair between Catherine and Heathcliff until he was betrayed by Catherine. Later, the return of Heathcliff represented the change of host of the farmhouse who owned the power to manipulate everyone related to Wuthering Heights, including his child. Though Heathcliff ’s life made no difference with the rising wind and scudding clouds, it ended burring with his beloved, peacefully and harmoniously. Perhaps you may doubt how the story does with devotion, with it portraying the dark side of human being, with it concealing all the unselfish dedication that human being can offer to their beloved ones, with it turning a pure affection to the mixture of hideousness and revenge. Yet, neither one can teach how true devotion should be, nor one can judge the actions of Heathcliff, the protagonist, who vowed to devote himself to Catherine. After all, what the readers can perceive from this classic of English Literature, is the unceasing love from Heathcliff who leads to endless conflicts between characters which embodies devotion.

Joan of Arc: Maid, Myth and History, Timothy Wilson-Smith. (2008) Providing a broad and comprehensive overview of Joan of Arc, a renowned historical figure who led her nation’s armies to achieve victory in the later stage of Hundred Years’ War and was regarded as a French heroine. The book does not only account for the legendary life of Joan, but also what plays out after her death—her rehabilitation as a saint and her portrayal in various art works over the centuries. Till now, many are still fascinated by this young woman, who was originally a 17 year-old peasant girl, persuaded the French King that she could lead her nation to seek victory, and was executed by the British by burning at the stake after her capture in 1431, and was canonized 500 years after her death. Joan’s devotion to her beloved nation and her religious belief could be seen throughout the book, being a devout Catholic and a martyr though her life was cut short by them.

A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens (1859) Being a well-known masterpiece of Dickens, this is a novel set in London and Paris during the French Revolution. Throughout the novel, the plights of French peasants under the demoralization of aristocracy and the brutality showed by the revolutionaries to the former aristocrats during the revolution are depicted. As the last thought of Sydney Carton, who was guillotined in order to help Charles Darnay, the lover of his beloved Lucy Manette, to escape from his death sentence, “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known” is one of the most famous lines of the novel. With self-sacrifice for love as the main theme, Sydney Carton, who is fearless of death, though ceased to exist in the end, remains a selfless hero and is lamented by thousands readers for his dedication to his lover.

Captain America: The First Avengers (2011)
Unlike most of the superhero films, Captain America: The First Avengers captured the patriotism of an ordinary commoner which is seldom being screened, especially patriotism in the Second World War, a sensitive and chaotic period. Even Steve Rogers was just a human as same as others, his loyalty to the country urged him to arm himself with hard-earned superpowers to save his companions and the country. Patriotism, a deep-rooted sensation in human’s mind, sometimes soundlessly equips us with courage and defend for our homeland, which are considered devotion.

The movie may not solely emphasize on devotion, at least unrecognized by the public. Yet, when it is closely examined, audience can read the deep-going devotion within the 126 minutes, the genuine and earnest one given by the mentor who has elevated and altered an intelligent but despicable teen (Will Hunting) to a gentleman who grips bravery and faith to embrace his future. In many occasions, mentorship is the most approachable relationship with the mentor acts like a soulmate who gently listens and frankly responds, which is exactly what Professor William did to Will. With the worldwide accolade and awards, this film should not be missed.

POEMS Annabel Lee, Edgar Allan Poe (1849)
Being the last complete poem composed by this American author, the delineation of this poem is similar to many other Poe’s poems, the death of a beautiful woman. The narrator poured out his love to his long-lasting lover, Annabel Lee. Though their love began in a “kingdom by the sea” at their young age, their love was so deep that angels became envious of them. The angels eventually took Annabel Lee from him. Even so, it did not hinder the devoted love of the persona, who could sacrifice his soul and life to lie beside his love. The repetition of words and phrases was with a purpose to create a mournful effect throughout the poem, and until the end of time of the narrator. Edgar Allan Poe
Karen Sy Goblin’s Market, Christina Rossetti (1862) Different from most of the recommendations, this poem is not about devotion of romance, but devotion of sisterly love, an emotion that can hardly feel by someone who have no siblings. Lizzie, the elder sister in the poem, treated her sister Laura as the pearl on her hand, and showed her devotion to this relationship by bravely saving her sister, even being mistreated by the evil character Goblin.

The Doom of Lúthien (extracted from The Lays of Beleriand), Christopher Tolkien (1937) The tale of Beren and Lúthien is the most impressive love poem I have ever read. Throughout the lines, the deathless love of Beren and Lúthien is depicted. Lúthien, who is halfelf and half-divine, is the fairest lady that walks on the earth in the story, whereas Beren is only a mortal man, young even in human age. Though their union was opposed by Lúthien’s parents and Lúthien must give up her immortal life for her marriage to a mortal, she chose to forsake her immortality for her lover. Their love, which surpasses death, is not a tragedy as many see and grieve in the story, but immolation.

Empire state of mind, Jay-Z & Alicia Keys (2009)
Hero, Mariah Carey (1993)
From Mariah Carey’s voice, we are told how our mind should be when we face impediments and feel devastated. Devote ourselves to the fear, then look inside our hearts and we will know there’s nothing to be fear for, for it will turn into our motivation and push us to go ahead and thus we can overcome those obstacles. “Then a hero comes along, with the strength to carry on” –whenever we are afraid, don’t escape, don’t hesitate and don’t give up, but embrace our fear and devote ourselves to it, the song will surely give you strength to carry on your journey.
Hopelessly Devoted to You, Olivia NewtonJohn (1978)
This song is extracted from the classic musical “Grease” which describes how Sandy was blindly fall in love with Danny though she knew the boy would never admit their chemistry. That is why the song titled “Hopelessly Devoted to You”. “Nowhere to hide, since you pushed my love aside” - this line pictures the charisma of Danny which made Sandy devoted herself to the love affair. At the same time, the use of the word “push” showed how cruel Danny was when he refused to continue their summer relationship.

“Empire state of mind”, a song by Jay-Z & Alicia Keys in 2009, is a renowned anthem which illustrateds how New Yorkers love their city – a place that is surrounded by dreams. New York is a place that gives people chances to pursue what they want. Broadway singers, football players, designers and so on. People work hard and devote themselves to the nation, or the place where they strive for their own achievement. “Concrete jungle where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can’t do” – this line delineates the nature and the simplest reason why people love New York, for it can touch your soul and exists as an inspiration. That is perhaps why New Yorkers are proud of being part of it, for it is a place where dreams come true.
