Welcome to North Shropshire College. Our goal is simple: to provide you with the very best education and training to equip you for further studies at university or employment. We are here to help you realise your dreams.
As Head of North Shropshire College, I am very proud that the College is going from strength to strength, with the performance of our students getting better every year.
At North Shropshire College we deliver a very broad range of courses, specifically designed to meet your personal needs. We are a relatively small college, so the well-being and success of every single student is important to us. You will be supported to achieve your best, and treated as an individual, not a number. Our teachers and support staff are very well-qualified and experienced, and we are able to offer outstanding facilities to progress your education. I hope that you will enjoy reading this course guide and find a programme that meets your requirements. Should you need further guidance or want to visit us, please contact our Student Services Team on 01691 688 080.
The merger of colleges to form Herefordshire, Ludlow and North Shropshire College has brought about many advantages, for example; we are the only college in the area to offer a timetable suited to the demands of young people living in our rural community, who often face long daily journeys. Through the merger there has been increased investments in facilities, including a new refectory at Walford, and assorted renovations across both campuses. Our timetables book study periods to guarantee free half days and, in most cases, a free day every week; so students can study at home, pursue their sporting or other extracurricular activities, or possibly take a parttime job. I look forward to meeting you at one of our Open Events and welcoming you to our unique and friendly College.
We hope that you will join our learning community in North Shropshire.

CHOOSING YOUR COURSE WHAT DO YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT? When choosing your course it is a good idea to read through the following information so you know what to expect from your course, and which options are available to you. These steps outline how to go about choosing your course and are followed by more information to help you.
1 WHERE ARE YOU NOW? Check the progression table opposite to see what levels of study are currently available to you. It might be that you need to start on a lower level course in order to progress to a higher level of study, so check that your qualifications meet the entry requirements of the course you are considering.
16 – 18 STUDY PROGRAMME Each student aged 16 – 18 years at NSC has a study programme specifically tailored to meet their educational needs and career aspirations. It consists of the Main chosen qualification, as well as further development of Maths, English and Employability Skills. Its aim is to improve young people’s career prospects and also widen options for higher level study. These programmes Include: •
All full-time students aged 16 – 18 years will study English and Maths as part of their studies. This will be either GCSE or Functional Skills, depending on prior GCSE grades and initial assessment. Those students who have already achieved sufficient grades will be supported through a programme of directed studies. Maths and English skills and the ability to apply them are seen as essential skills by universities and employers. Many universities now accept a Level 2 Functional Skill in Maths and English as recognised qualifications which carry UCAS points. This is a government-driven initiative, fully supported by the college.
•
Each full-time student will participate in work experience, as well as activities designed to develop the skills and confidence required for their progression.
•
Those students who aren’t able to study for a substantial vocational qualification (e.g if they have complex learning needs and/ or disadvantage) will study a programme to develop their employability skills, this might include some work experience.

TIPS FOR FINDING YOUR INDUSTRY PLACEMENT
INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS The College is encouraging Level 3 students to take part in a minimum of 45 days of industry placement. The idea is for you to build and develop your skills in a genuine working environment, taking the theoretical knowledge of your course and putting this into practice. Your placements will take place outside of your normal college days, which may be one or two days a week, or in blocks.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF INDUSTRY PLACEMENTS FOR YOU? • Employers are always keen to take on workers
with some experience under their belt, which can be difficult straight after finishing your qualification. With an industry placement you can add this to your CV and stand out from other candidates.
• An industry placement will offer you the chance
to learn more transferable and industrial skills from the industry’s experts.
• If you make a good impression on the
employer, they may be interested in taking you on as a paid employee, either on a part-time basis, or as an apprentice.
• Experience life in a real working environment. • This placement could be the first stepping stone
to your future career.
For enquiries please email: info@nsc.ac.uk
• Utilise your connections – Speak to your friends
and family, tutors, careers advisors or neighbours, they may know of somewhere suitable for you to enquire about a placement.
• Search your local area – Have a look around your
local area for businesses that you may not know about, newspapers are also a good way to find local employers.
• Try a different angle – You could try looking
for part-time vacancies in your chosen industry, you could get a work experience trial which leads on to employment.
• Leave your details – Some employers may not be in a
position to take you on for a placement, but leave your contact details with them, as their situation may change.
• Make notes – Ensure that you know what you would
like to ask before phoning, note who it is you have been speaking with, and any other relevant information during the call.
• Aim for the top – When contacting companies, try
to speak to the Manager, or the Human Resources (HR) department if it’s a larger company.
• Keep Trying – Don’t be discouraged if you get
turned down, don’t worry, just keep on looking.
• Be prepared – When contacting employers, ensure
you have your CV at the ready, including your skills and experience, these can serve as prompts during a conversation.
• Always make a good impression – Ensure
that you are polite and respectful when talking with employers, they are much more likely to remember you.
• Look online – Businesses may have a section
on their website where you can apply for work experience or voluntary work.

SUPPORTING YOU EQUALITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION ‘Equality’ means treating all groups of people fairly, providing equality of opportunity and removing barriers to success. It is not about treating everybody the same – different people have different needs. For example, making reasonable adjustments for people with a disability (like providing additional time in exams for students with dyslexia) removes barriers and helps prevent discrimination. Increasing our understanding of the needs of different groups promotes good relations between people.
EQUALITY – PROTECTED CHARACTERISTICS Equality laws exist to protect the groups of people who have traditionally faced discrimination. These groups of people share ‘equality protected characteristics’ such as: • • • • • • • • •
Age Disability Gender reassignment Marriage/civil partnership Race Religion or belief Pregnancy/maternity leave Sex Sexual orientation
Everyone has several of these protected characteristics, therefore everyone is protected by equality legislation from discrimination in education, at work and in other situations.
WHAT IS DIVERSITY? ‘Diversity’ refers to individual difference. People are unique and differ from one another in a range of ways. Differences may or may not be visible and many include personal characteristics such as background, culture and personality. We value diversity which means that we aim to realise the potential of every individual student and staff member.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR EVERYONE We strive to ensure that every student at North Shropshire College is treated fairly regardless of background, age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, family circumstances, or the community where they live. They will not be treated any differently from anyone else at the College. It also means that we will not put up with bullying. We will not tolerate anyone who threatens, picks on or isolates another student or a member of staff. College staff are committed to giving all students an equal chance to learn and achieve their goals. There is an on-going programme of action and monitoring, which seeks to identify and eliminate all forms of discrimination, whether intentional or unintentional. The College’s Single Equality Plan can be found on our website: www.nsc.ac.uk/aboutnsc/equality-diversity-safeguarding
SUPPORT AVAILABLE AT NSC The College is committed to ensuring that students, staff and visitors are not subject to harassment or discrimination. The College is also able to provide help and support to individual students or groups on all of the nine protected characteristics. If you wish to talk or need help and support, please contact one of the safeguarding contacts shown on the page opposite.

HELP WHEN YOU NEED IT SAFEGUARDING & PREVENT Safeguarding our students, staff and visitors is important to us. Safeguarding means: • • • • • •
Promotion of your health and development Ensuring your safety and care Ensuring you are offered the best life chances Protection from abuse and neglect Prevention of bullying and harassment Prevention of terrorism and extremism
The term ‘safeguarding’ embraces the protection of children, young people and vulnerable adults with care and support needs. We take preventative approaches to keep our student, staff and visitor population safe. Safeguarding encompasses students’ health and safety, welfare and well-being. The college is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults with care and support needs and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We have developed policies and procedures that aim to meet this commitment. Our policy covers: • • • • • • •
Abuse, neglect and prevention of harm Prevention of discrimination Anti-bullying and harassment Addressing attendance issues Supporting health-care plans for students with specific medical needs Safety and security Prevention of terrorism and extremism – NSC supports the government’s Prevent Strategy working against terrorism and extremism in all of its forms.

SUPPORTING YOU MONEY MATTERS NSC believes in giving everyone equal opportunities to study further education. The College receives some funding from the Government to support student study and this varies depending on the course being studied, the student’s age and their level of study. Because of this, there are some fees that the College may have to pass on to students. Please see alterations made to HLC Money Matters. The following information lists financial support available and we recommend contacting the Student Services for further information. Please note that the costs on course pages are for guidance purposes only and should be checked prior to enrolment. Are you aged between 16 and 19 years on 31 August? For students who enrol on their further education full-time course before their 19th birthday there are no tuition or examination fees. However, some courses may charge Additional Costs to cover materials, resources, equipment, specialist clothing, etc. Are you aged 19 or over? If you are aged 19 or over at the start of your course then tuition fees will vary. As everyone has individual circumstances then the best way to work out the fees relevant to you is to call and speak to Student Services on 0800 440228. Please read through the information on this page regarding, the Advanced Learner Loan.

TRANSPORT COSTS Accessing local education and training can often be a challenge for some of our young people due to the high costs of travel. Travel remains free on all routes where students are eligible for an NSC bursary. A new zoning system for passes has been introduced as follows: • Within 4 miles of any NSC campus to be
attended – £350 per academic year • Within 5 – 15 miles of any NSC campus to be attended – £450 per academic year • Over 15 miles from any NSC campus to be attended – £550 per academic year • If students are travelling by service bus, train or own car and are in receipt of any of the NSC bursaries they will be eligible for a refund of travel expenses paid (terms & conditions apply)

APPRENTICESHIPS WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is a paid job with an accompanying skills development programme, which allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal ‘off-the-job’ training and the opportunity to practise and embed new skills in a real work context. So, not only will you gain valuable experience, you will also be learning and earning at the same time. Apprenticeships have been designed by employers to meet employers’ needs for a particular sector or job role. Each apprenticeship defines the skills, knowledge, behaviours and formal qualifications that the apprentice needs to acquire in order to become competent in their chosen field, and to be awarded the status of fully qualified apprentice.

INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIPS
APPROACH AN EMPLOYER DIRECTLY
(equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Intermediate Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 2 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Intermediate Apprenticeship may allow progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship.
You can contact an employer to see if they would like to take you on as an apprentice. They might not know that they need an apprentice until you contact them! Remember that you are hoping that they will take you on as an employee, so act professionally and make a good impression. If you can, find out a bit about the company first by visiting their website and preparing what you want to say.
To start an Intermediate Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five GCSEs (grade E/grade 2 or above).
ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIPS (equivalent to two A Level passes) Advanced Apprenticeships involve the development and assessment of skills and knowledge at Level 3 (relevant to the occupational sector or job role). Achievement of an Advanced Apprenticeship may allow progression onto a Higher Apprenticeship. To start an Advanced Apprenticeship, the applicant should ideally have five good GCSEs (grade C/grade 4 or above) or have successfully completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship.
HOW LONG IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? The minimum length of an apprenticeship is 12 months, but some apprenticeships will be designed to last two, or more years. This will depend on the framework or standard being followed, the level of apprenticeship, the specific occupational area/sector and the prior skill levels of the apprentice.
WHAT CAN I DO AFTER MY APPRENTICESHIP? There are a number of routes that you can take after an apprenticeship. You can use the skills that you have developed to carry on in employment. You can also continue with the apprenticeship scheme to progress to the next level of apprenticeship, such as an Advanced Apprenticeship.

I’d heard good things about North Shropshire College, and it was local to me as well. The atmosphere is great here and it’s a good environment to learn in as well as to make new friends. STUDENT VIEW ALAN WILLIAMSON PLUMBING LEVEL 2
“I moved to Oswestry last summer having lived and worked in Reading for the past 25 years - I am a keen runner and hiker, and was drawn to the area because of its fantastic countryside and access to outdoor activities. As I was leaving my long term job I decided to take the opportunity to retrain and I felt a construction based course would offer me a great range of job options. Initially, I chose the Level 2 plumbing course due to my practical nature and because it has room for progression after - I will now be returning in September to do the Level 3 course. At first I was a little unsure about being a mature student, as I might not have had things in common with the younger students, but the atmosphere within our group has been terrific and I’ve got on really well with everyone - it has actually been good to help some of the other students and share some of my experiences. I have not decided exactly what I will do after the Level 3 course but I find the environmental aspects of our day to day lives fascinating - the way we use water and energy in our homes is something that has such potential for improvement and an area I would certainly be interested in pursuing”.

PUBLIC SERVICES STUDENTS - OUT & ABOUT Our students build friendships by working as a team and developing their fitness levels through practical activities, both of which are vital in the public services sector. They also improve their skills and confidence which helps to bring out the character of each individual student. Being with their peers and a supportive group of staff allows students to conquer their fears and become stronger, more confident individuals. Students take part in a five-day trip to Outward Bound Centre in Aberdovey. The week is designed for them to advance their leadership skills, to work as part of a team and progress their personal achievements in different challenges. The students work as a team to get every member over a variety of outdoor challenges and obstacles. Course lecturer, Marie Davis commented, “It was a fantastic week with amazing students, it was a pleasure to watch them develop their skills and personal achievement.” Students experience a number of guest speakers from the emergency services and the armed services, where they are educated about career pathways and application opportunities. There are also many day trips to enhance the learning experience, such as regular hill walking and numerous outdoor fitness activities. Additional to this is the use of PGL outdoor centre where students have the opportunity to complete land-based and water-based adventure units.

STUDENT VIEW LEWIS DUTTON
LEVEL 3 TNS FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP
Lewis joined the College as part of the TNS Sport Scholarship programme, studying Sport alongside playing football. “I started at TNS in the Junior Academy, and knew that playing football was what I wanted to do as a career. The scholarship is a great way to do this, as it means I get to play the football that I love, but also, I’m gaining a qualification at the same time. Unlike other sport courses, the scholarship is fully focussed on football, but because of the qualification that you gain being worth 3 A-Levels, you can still go on to University. The course is good for players of all abilities, and I’ve really enjoyed being part of the College. The teachers are great, and coming to the end of my second year, I’ve been offered a contract with the main team as a goalkeeper. If you love football, I’d really recommend this course for you.”

ANIMAL MANAGEMENT LEVEL 3 “I chose the Level 3 Animal Management course because I have always had such a strong interest in animals – even since I was a child I knew that this is the job route I wanted to take. The College is not too far away from my home and quite easy to get to, so was an obvious choice for me. As all of my friends went to a different colleges, I found coming here on my own such a big leap for me – but I knew doing so would help me grow as a person and allow me to be more independent. There are so many good aspects of studying here; we have amazing teachers who are extremely supportive and are always there when you need them. During lockdown the teachers and students have been so supportive and helpful online – due to this we have managed to finish the College year and complete the work that needed doing. I have also made amazing friends in such a short space of time – which I didn’t think was possible. Not to mention the receptionists are always really helpful – when we walk by they always say hello and show a friendly face. I love how practical the Animal Management course is, every day we have at least one hour of being on the unit with the huge variety of animals, this is where we learn about them and take care of them. We also have directed study, which gives us time to catch up with work in the library and teaches us to work without the help of a tutor.

This September I will return for the second year of my course and when my course is complete I would like to go to university, where I can continue to grow and get the job that I will enjoy and love. I would definitely recommend this college and the courses. It’s such a lovely environment and I’m not exaggerating when I say that my whole college class gets along so well – we all support each other and having such a close group makes college really fun.”

STUDENT VIEW HENRY EDKINS
MOTOR VEHICLE LEVEL 1, 2 & 3 Henry is a former student who is now working as an apprentice at the Bentley factory. “Living locally, Walford campus was a logical place for me to study and being a young lad with an interest in cars, I knew I wanted to get into a career involving motor vehicle. I started on the level 1 course, and completed levels 2 and 3 as well. The tutors are really supportive throughout my studies, they were always able to give great advice, and the work experiences that I was able to do as part of the course really set me down the path of my career. We had the opportunity to do the work experience in a variety of settings; I chose to do a week at Bentley, and that’s how I knew I wanted to work there in the creation of new vehicles. The range of equipment and facilities at Walford is great for learning the skills required for the motor vehicle trade. With so many different ramps and vehicles to work on you can learn everything from diagnostics to completely re-building an engine. I took those skills with me, added a qualification in joinery and applied to the Bentley apprenticeship scheme, where I’ve now been for the last two years, working in the wood shop, producing parts for the interiors of production cars. I’m really grateful for the support and knowledge the tutors passed on to me during my time at Walford, and I’d really recommend the course to others who are interested in studying motor vehicle”.
