TI NH BEE T LW IE FE NE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO by HOA PHAN

ABOUT THIS PORTFOLIO This portfolio is a collection of various academic and professional projects that I involved in during the past years as an individual or a team member. Some presented are complete design projects, while others exhibit technical skills that have profoundly informed and reinforced my design thinking and personal proposition.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to take the chance to acknowledge enormous support from professor Margaret Grose, Sidh Sintusingha, Siqing Chen and Andrew Saniga in the past three years at Melbourne School of Design for invaluable guidance and feedbacks for every landscape studio that I attended. Being a part of this dedicated faculty, I found myself extremely lucky to be well equipped with not only applicable knowledge and skills but also a prepared mind to embrace opportunities and challenges of the profession. I also wish to express my gratitude towards City of Danang, my hometown, for providing generous funding for my duration of stay in Australia. I am also grateful that my UoM fellows: Udie Tran, Dinh Vo, Iris Fong, Thea Yang and many more have been my company during the course and provided valuable input and early proofread of this portfolio. And above all, I am thankful to have my family’s patience, unfailing love and encouragement throughout the last three years I have been away from home.

the result of a successful iteration of re-constructing the topography based on digital inputs as ‘ridge and valley’. As a result, the design will not only be appreciated for its undulated form, but also functions as distributed stormwater detention infrastructure, a bio-filter for degraded stream condition at Moonee Ponds Creek.

undulated landform

MASTER PLAN

THE SITE This section of Moonee Ponds Creek exhibits typical characteristics of a highly urbanized stream with straightened water course and incised streambed (which was then concreted). The forceful approach to prevent flooding (rapid conveyance) causes increasingly severe urban stream syndrome such as degraded water quality, loss of habitat and disconnected local community. DESIGN PROPOSITION The design is grounded on the idea that land is formed by force, in a way that can be broken down into parameters to reversely re-construct the desired landform utilising digital platform. This phenomenon can be widely tested in our natural environment: tectonic movement in volcanic landform; wind in the case of sand dunes or water flow in fluvial floodplain. Sculpting Creekscape elaborates on that notion and goes on to testify the possibility of re-constructing desired topography utilising digital simulation tool such as Rhino 3D and Grasshopper. With the study of water flow, the project aims to suggest an adaptive scheme to seasonal flux in the context of Moonee Ponds Creek as well as propose solutions for stormwater treatment across the site.

SITE STRATEGY Strategies include reactivate the interaction between the creek and its floodplain (landform and water), ultimately generate self-maintained scheme for seasonal flux of the channel; regenerate suitable habitat for terrestrial and aquatic species, and revitalize the creekscape as a historically community social space.

The pattern for riparian landform is therefore selected due to the flow accumulation that facilitate floodplain capacity to ‘capture’ water locally in a micro-scale, improving local water infiltration.

PLANNING APPROACH With underlying principles of Landscape Urbanism as a contemporary paradigm shift in town planning, X-town explores the idea of landscape organizing the development: conceiving urban environment not as cluster of buildings and infrastructure but as our immediate environments such as our backyards, streets, open space, social space and even its unseen tranformation.

PROJECT STATEMENT The project envisions a futuristic town in which residents actively aware of their environments and surroundings; give their appreciation to the neighborhood and society; and devote their participation in building a better environment and community. This ambition sets a basic scope upon which we elaborate our design.

PHOTOGRAPHY Along with design, I have been taking digital photography for a while with my beloved Nikon D610, more as a leisure activity than professional pursuit. But recently I also got my hand on Nikon EM, a semi-manunal film camera with an old-fashioned 50mm lenses. Equally excited as getting the film developed after months of inattention, I enjoy my ‘ritual 2s pause’ before taking the snap because you know it has to be perfect to worth $1 per shot. It is a very fun experience to me and I enjoy it very much ever since.

HOA THI KHANH PHAN

GRADUATE LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT | 2017 sithoaphan@gmail.com

22 August 1995

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE TO ME IS... ... the life in between. When I look at a void between the concrete, I envision how landscape architecture can breath new life into it: the void between urban grids, or ‘streets’ as they refer to; the void between buildings and towns, or ‘open space’ as it is known; or the void not so apparent to our eyes, the mosaic of natural remnants left behind by urban development. More often than not those are spaces both architects and urban planners do not account for, as they either sit outside the envelope or are projected at unreadable scale; those are the muted void in between. I believe that is where landscape architecture comes to negotiate its offer for such undermined space, to not only reclaim its life, but also put forward unforeseen solutions to our future urban problems. My wish is to re-stitch those voids, to not only recover but also offer them new meanings, new souls that reflect its past, present and future.

MY WEAKNESS.. More often I design from visual illustrations, that’s I believe is my insecurity in a profession that requires much more than a selling rendering. Yet that weakness has been the most pushing motivation for me to try even harder getting involved in the process of making and understanding the construction reality, such that in Surveying Methods and at Jaywarden Architects. As a young graduate, I wish to learn what it actually takes to deliver a ‘practical solution’ without having to compromise other aspects of design and how a landscape project is carried out from file to field. This is the reason I decide to commit to work in the industry where I am willing to learn and evolve.
