THE HOCKADAY PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION 2023 BENEFIT
Supporting the Hockaday Athletics and Wellness Project
Dear Hockaday Parents, Alumnae, Faculty, and Friends:
Welcome to the 2023 Hockaday Parents’ Association Benefit, Daisy Destinations: A Jet Set Fête! The Hockaday Parents’ Association Benefit Committee has planned a unique evening for the community and is delighted to welcome our treasured Hockaday Parents, Faculty, Staff, Trustees, and Alumnae to the festivities, which include fellowship, delicious food from Food Glorious Food, and lively music from the Emerald City All Stars Band.
Tonight’s proceeds will benefit the Hockaday Athletics and Wellness Project – good sportsmanship, health, wellness, camaraderie, and teamwork are a ticket to anywhere, launching students to limitless horizons!
Beyond athletics and wellness, we are proud to celebrate the timeless value of a Hockaday education that Miss Ela Hockaday envisioned nearly 110 years ago in 1913, preparing our girls to make an impact in our global community as they take flight on the world stage.
Enclosed, please find your program for this year’s Benefit, which details the one-of-a-kind auction items that await you on this special night, and lists the many people, businesses, donors, and volunteers who make this extraordinary celebration of Hockaday’s community possible.
Your generosity speaks volumes to our girls about the importance you place on their continued growth and strengthens our ability to provide the best resources for our students for years to come.
As you celebrate with friends, please remember the hundreds of donors and volunteers who make this night possible and toast Charlotte Hudson Carter ’99 and Jennifer Tobin, our Benefit CoChairs, and Tricia Drum Davidson ’91, our HPA President.
Warmly,
Dr. Laura Leathers Eugene McDermott Head of SchoolDear Friends,
What a journey this past year has been, leading Daisy Destinations: A Jet Set Fête! The idea of wanderlust and travel grabbed ahold of our hearts and minds when we began planning, in the vein of Hockaday’s pursuit of excellence and limitless horizons.
We became inspired by the idea of the journey and not only the destination, because Hockaday is indeed the vehicle that propels students upward. This year’s theme celebrates the sheer fun of fabulous vacations, exotic locales, diverse experiences, relaxed and yet glamourous environs… the era and age of vintage “jet setting” both home and abroad. We’ve channeled the exploratory spirit of Hockaday’s inaugural “Travel Class,” 95 years later. In 1928, a group of eight students and two teachers set off for Gibraltar and traversed Europe for seven months before returning stateside. This tradition continued for a decade.
No flight can be successful without its Co-Pilots, Captains, and Crew… we are humbled by the incredible generosity of all the people who made this evening and its offerings possible. Because of the selfless gifts of time, brainpower, creativity, and financial support, both in our school community and in the broader Dallas landscape, we have an incredible evening in store!
We invite you all to match the level of enthusiasm that went into planning with your engagement and investment! Purchase those lastminute raffle tickets, bid on incredible items, experiences, and trips in the auction, snag some souvenirs, and enjoy libations, dinner, and dancing… after all, this is the FUN part of FUNdraising!
It has been our distinct honor and privilege to lead this phenomenal undertaking. The annual HPA Benefit is not a one-evening event, but an entire ecosystem of community spirit, voluntarism, fundraising, outreach, and connection. The “pillars” of the Benefit include Live and Silent Auctions, Underwriting and Sponsorships, Merchandise, Raffle, and a series of 20 Special Occasions, each with its own leaders spearheading thousands of hours, hundreds of generous donors, and dozens of volunteers. None of this would be possible without all of them, so please join us in thanking this entire group, without whom this flight would have never gotten off the ground.
With warmth, joy, and sincere appreciation for all who have traveled with us,
Charlotte Hudson Carter ’99 Jennifer C. Tobin SKY-HIGH GRATITUDE FROMFor 109 years, Athletics has played an integral role in the lives of Hockaday students. Ela Hockaday was bold and visionary when she named Athletics as one of Hockaday’s Four Cornerstones in 1913.
Over these many decades, Hockaday’s Athletics and Wellness programs have taught the girls to enjoy the mental and physical benefits that stem from teamwork, self-sacrifice, and perseverance. Hockaday remains committed to providing numerous opportunities that enable its girls to develop and nurture the knowledge and skills necessary to live healthy, active lives.
Proceeds from the Hockaday Parents’ Association 2023 Benefit will help fund the addition of state-of-the-art outdoor facilities, including a new competition track with a turf field center, two new competition and practice fields oriented in a North-South configuration, and a new softball diamond, as well as a 1.5 mile cross country path that will circumnavigate the campus, spectatorfriendly event access, and easy-access parking to enhance the full experience for students, parents, and families. The design also includes a new main plaza, which will serve as a much-needed community-gathering space with a new concessions building, as well as a building with team facilities and meeting rooms. In addition, the new facilities will include four outdoor classroom spaces and a designated 2,000 square foot field research station for outdoor science experiments and data collection.
With the support of our entire community and your generosity tonight, this year’s Benefit — Daisy Destinations: A Jet Set Fête! — will help to elevate Hockaday’s Athletics and Wellness fields and facilities and will provide extraordinary new opportunities for the girls to continue in their development as healthy, strong, emotionally grounded, confident young women.

$50 PER LED BRACELET TO PLAY
Buy a light-up bracelet, unfasten your seatbelt, and stand up! When the Live Auction begins, put your hands on your head or your "tail" — we'll flip a coin and if you guess right, you’ll stay up! Hit some turbulence in the odds, though, and you'll take a seat. We will keep going until we have one lucky winner! The last passenger standing will trade in their plastic bracelet for a $5,000 gift certificate and a concierge shopping experience at Eisemann Jewels, Dallas' premier family-owned jeweler!
MORE FUN THAN A PASSPORT PHOTO!
We're trying something new in the world of photo booths... changes in latitude, changes in attitude! Grab your partner or a group of friends for a fun slow-motion souvenir. The camera will snap a digital memory, set to music, for your scrapbook or social media sharing.
Take home a preserved and premium faux arrangement and let the vacation vibes live on! No decay here…unlike a travel visa, these sculptural sensations will not expire. Three types of centerpieces can be purchased at the event and picked up on Sunday. Gold mini hoop arrangement $50; gold classic hoop arrangement $100; large grapewood and orchids on acrylic $250.
Beyond the auction, buy apparel and accessories perfect for the shoreline or the sideline! From Daisy-embroidered straw visors, to SPF-blocking ventilated "H" shirts, to 24-karat gold-trimmed cloisonne enamel ornaments… perfect to commemorate a fun evening or an SPC-championship season, all items are sure to make it through customs to carry on back home. Limited inventory.

ANNE GENUNG DOLLY WITH DAISIES III, 2023
Value: $1,625
Mixed media on cradled wood panel, 24” x 24”. Anne Genung '96 is a Houston-based artist, most well-known for her Willie Nelson series, which is marked by a graphic use of color and references to pop culture under an often-humorous guise. More recently, she has started making works featuring Dolly Parton inspired by Dolly's ability to remain herself in any transformation. Each collaged work is first created with an aerosol stencil of her subject's unmistakable features and then using a palette of repurposed paper, the work becomes a literal collage of color, street art and traditional portraiture. Raised in Dallas and a Hockaday alumna from the Class of 1996, Anne attended Pratt Institute and Parsons School of Design. Her work hangs in private homes and businesses in the United States, Western Europe and Asia.

The new wakeless model will keep the water calm, keep the coaches cool, and keep the rowers even safer, as the wakeless model can hold more rowers in an emergency situation. Please help us buy a Stillwater Duo 18 wakeless coaching launch that costs $25,000.

WIDE OPEN HEART SCULPTURE, TOM HOITSMA
Value: $7,645 • Buy It Now : $8,000
Tom Hoitsma is a local Dallas artist who was inspired by the tornado that ripped through his neighborhood in October 2019 to create a series of metal art sculptures collectively titled “The Heart of the Matter”.
Following is an excerpt from his artist statement regarding this series:
“On our walk the morning after the tornado, my 12 year old daughter and I bumped into a couple standing in front of their home. It was destroyed. The roof was gone, a few interior walls were standing but most of the exterior walls were just piles of brick. The couple pointed to an interior white door that was still standing (the exterior walls to that room were gone) and said, “Do you see that white door? We were all huddled behind that door when the tornado ripped the roof off the house. The air was thick with debris flying around and we all just clutched each other until it finally passed. In front of that door used to be our bedroom (there were no walls standing). We’re so grateful that the four of us made it out without a scratch.” And that made me think. People are so resilient. We see this again and again from every corner of the world. Events in our lives can break our hearts, but somehow we cannot be defeated. Like these sculptures, our hearts get bumped, bruised, and battered but somehow remain full of hope and joy. We all emerge changed from tragic experiences but eventually, hopeful for the future. It became clear that this twisted metal was the perfect metaphor. To take this material which had been so mangled by this tornado and create something new that was vibrant and beautiful. This work, born of tragedy and loss, is an examination of the impact of the “new normal” we are living in so many areas of our lives, how we are able create joy from unimaginable loss, and the unstoppable resiliency of the human heart.”
