A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR “Yep – Tudor womanhood – would recommend,” is the facetious advice Catherine Parr gives the audience after describing her life with multiple husbands, their deaths, and the societal requirement for her to remarry or risk becoming an outcast. Initially, this line lands with the same dark comedy wit with which the authors of SIX have written their Tudor Pop Queen script. But there’s something different about Catherine’s cadence that cuts our laugher short. She gives up on the joke. Seemingly exhausted of making light of her captive autobiography, the punch line trails off in her voice. This is the moment when Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow explain why they wrote a musical about the six wives of Henry VIII coming back from the dead to put on a pop concert competition to decide who is America’s favorite historic British queen. Most Americans couldn’t name a British queen besides Elizabeth II and if we had to choose our favorite queen, we would most likely choose Freddie Mercury or Elsa of Arendelle. Yet, SIX The Musical is a megahit in the United States. It has been playing to sold out audiences on Broadway since 2021. The national touring company of SIX has set box office records across the country. Add London, Toronto, UK and Australia tours and there are six companies of SIX (See what they did there?) playing simultaneously around the world. Yes, Anne Boleyn had a famous sixth finger, but I don’t think that is what sells the tickets. SIX is a hit because a story about women, only women, “without a single man to tell [them] what to do with it,” is still a novelty. Yes, the music bops and the lights pop but behind the glitz and glam are six tragic stories of abuse and trauma. Stories that read with a chilling modern relevance. Stories that women share centuries apart. I imagine the real Catherine Parr sitting in the audience of our production of SIX. She was, afterall, a scholar and proponent of women’s education. What would she think of her story being told at a prestigious school for girls? Proud, I hope. Amazed even! But perhaps she might also think – as she gazes into the sparklingly intelligent eyes of the actress portraying her five hundred years in the future – how is it that she seems to relate so well? CAST & CREW BIOGRAPHIES ERIN ANTES ‘24 (FORM IV) (Cast Catherine Parr) is so PUMPED to be in SIX: Teen Edition after playing Mary Poppins (Mary Poppins), Snail (A Year With Frog and Toad), and Lurch (The Addams Family) with the Hockaday Theatre Company. She loves beatboxing, she is a buff rower, lowk a choir nerd but shhhh don’t tell anyone, and her favorite thing is getting HYPEEE during rehearsal. GABBY GAONA ‘25 (FORM III) (Crew - Assistant Student Stage Manager) is exciting to be working with the Hockaday Theatre Company on this year’s musical. This is her second year in crew and second year on run crew in addition to her second year as an assistant stage manager. She has previously worked on design and built assorted pieces for five other Hockaday shows. Outside of theater she is an avid filmmaker and member of the Hockaday Film Studio. In her spare time she enjoys playing the bass guitar, baking, reading, crocheting, writing, painting, playing video games, watching movies, tutoring at Foster elementary, and volunteering at Citysquare. DYLAN GEORGE ‘25 (FORM III) (Cast Anne Boleyn) is beyond excited to play Anne Boleyn in SIX: Teen Edition! SIX has been one of her favorite musicals since it first debuted in London, and she is thrilled to be a part of such an amazing show. Dylan is a junior and has been involved in theater, voice, dance, and acting since she was seven. She has appeared in over 20 performances, three at Hockaday so far, her favorites including: Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins, Gertrude in Seussical, Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka, Mamma Mia! at NTPA, and Newsies! at St. Mark’s. Besides musical theater, Dylan also enjoys jazz singing, film acting, playing the guitar, being a representative on the Fine Arts Board, and spending time with her friends and family. SWATHI MEYYAPPAN ‘27 (FORM I) (Crew - Spot Operator) is excited for her first musical as tech with Hockaday. She also does robotics, piano, debate, and golf. ANEEKA MISRA ‘26 (FORM II) (Cast - Ensemble/Katherine Howard Understudy) is thrilled to be a part of Hockaday Theatre Company’s production of SIX: Teen Edition after her previous role as a Dancestor in The Addams Family. She has been taking voice lessons for six years and has been an All-State Choir member for the past two years. She is also a trained Indian classical dancer and vocalist, and enjoys performing with Hockadance and the Hockaday Concert Choir. She is also apart of the Hockaday Concert Choir and has been to TPSMEA AllRegion and All-State for the past two years. With the highs and lows of putting a show together, it’s safe to say that her favorite part of theater and performing is the bonding experience that she gets to have with new people.
