As a performer and a songwriter, Merle Haggard was the most important country artist to emerge in the 1960s, and he became one of the leading figures of the Bakersfield country scene in the '60s. While his music remained hardcore country, he pushed the boundaries of the music quite far, a melting pot that drew from all forms of traditional American music -- country, jazz, blues, and folk -and in the process, developed a distinctive style of his own. As a performer, singer, and musician, he was one of the best, influencing countless other artists. Throughout his career, Haggard has been a champion of the working man, largely due to his rough and tumble history. With 39 #1 Hits, a stint in San Quentin and countless touring miles behind him, Merle took a few minutes out of his day to talk with Publisher Brad Evans about his life and his music. Haggard remains an uncompromising artist whose work relies upon the honesty and purity of his vision, not the obligations of being a country star Why do you think you became a criminal? And how were you able to overcome that part of your life? Well, I was abandoned, when my father died. And I
thought about things that were too old for me to be thinking about. I started wanting to help my mother to make a living. She didn’t want me to. I started trying to run from those damn guys who wanted me to go to school, and started doing some petty things, and I went to jail for that. I met some people in there who were criminals, and that really rubbed off on me, and pretty soon I was trying to be Clyde Barrow. My heroes were the wrong people. John Dillinger and people like that. I went the wrong direction, and went pretty damn hard. And I ended up in the big house when I was 20 years old. I had a series of things happen in there that sort of turned my life around. What’s the worst memory you have of San Quentin? Sitting outside at 11 o’clock at night, looking at that place all lit up in there, Chained to a man I didn’t know. He was as scared as I was. The prisoners were yelling obscenities at the bus, and you know you got to go in there and be with them. And you know they have nothing else to focus on but you. You are about to be thrown in with a group of people who were considered the meanest and the toughest people in America.
That’s scary just hearing you say it. You better believe it. IF that don’t make the hair on the back of your neck stand up then you likely don’t have no blood running through your veins. Your best memory in prison besides getting out has to be seeing Johnny Cash Live at San Quentin Right? How was that? Well I’ve never assessed it like you just did, but yeah you are probably right, that probably was the best moment in San Quentin. But you know at the time I was not a huge Johnny Cash fan. I had a pretty good band in prison at the time. We sort of considered him to be sort of cornball. Bom Bom Bom, just straight up simple. HE was just too bland and straight up and down for us. So I was sort of wondering how he was going to compete with all the people in the variety show. There were all sorts of people there. Women taking their clothes off. Strippers and Dancers and some great blues players from San Francisco came up there. So Johnny Cash gets up there, and he doesn’t have a voice. He’s like ‘I played over there across the bay over here last night and I lost my voice.’ But he was able to take hold of 5000 men and mesmerize them with his charisma, and
even to this day, I’ve never seen anything like it. It was like Jesus Christ was standing there. You’ve written so many great songs, which one are you most proud of? Well that would be like trying to single out children. But “Today I’d start loving you.” That would be the biggest moneymaker probably. But I’m proud of all of them. I really am. What do you think about the state of Country Music these days? I love listening to Waylon and Willie and Johnny. They still set my ears to burning. I can’t stand perfect music. And it seems like that there are a bunch of producers that have taken charge of a city there in the south. And their charge is making perfect music. And they have a bunch of guys up there that you don’t know if they can sing or not because they are using them damn tuners. And you have to wait until you see them live to find out if they have talent. We don’t really need explosions to enjoy a concert do we?

Sit on your fat @#%, eat a sugary desert, order something from the shopping channel, smoke a cigarette and revel in the satisfaction that you are no longer a failure!
ose weight, save money, read more, get organized—the list of unachieved goals grows longer with each new year and it’s time to make a real change‌one I can keep. As I watched the ball drop in New York, I made my final New Year Resolution‌to never make a New Year Resolution again! Now that doesn’t mean that I’ve achieved all my life goals, it simply means that I will no longer make promises to myself that I know I won’t keep. What’s the use of this futile tradition? From my perspective, the only thing these resolutions prove is that I am weak and have no resolve‌so why set myself up for failure? The FIRST LEGO League Super Regional robotics tournament sponsored by STARBASE ROBINS and the Museum of Aviation will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2012. To celebrate the FIRST LEGO League Tournament, STARBASE ROBINS is inviting students to build a creation using LEGO (or similar) bricks and parts. The creations should be Emailed to museumofaviationinfo@gmail.com with the following information. First Name, Age (over 18 will be “adult”) Title of creation, School/Grade (if applicable) City, State, Country STARBASE ROBINS staff and volunteers will post the pictures of each creation two times per week on the STARBASE ROBINS Facebook page. A team is allowed a maximum of 10 players ages 9-14, with a major focus on team building, creativity and problem solving skills. Each year’s competition consists of a challenge with a different theme. Students use Lego MINDSTORM kits for the competition. In addition to the robotic portion, the competition also requires the teams to complete a research project relevant to the theme.
PERRY STUDENTS KNIT “HATS FOR HUMANITY” Thanks to the help of several students from the Perry Middle Future Business Leaders of America and the Perry Middle Art Club, several people will have hats to help keep them warm this winter. During November, students donated yarn and made hats for the "Hats for Humanity" project using looms. These hats were sent to The Refuge in Perry where church members had made several hats as well. The Refuge prayed over the hats during a church service and will dispense the hats to: inner city children in Savannah, a street mission for the homeless in Kansas, the homeless in Atlanta, and some of the soft hats will go to the Cancer Center in Warner Robins. Pictured are just a few of the students who participated in this project. Altogether, there were over 500 hats made for distribution during this winter season.

Go to a barber shop, coffee shop, or bar/restaurant (dare I suggest the Waffle House – good food and coffee there), and listen to people talk about this town. I think you’ll find that there is a significant dissatisfaction with the administration of our city. That is the perspective that matters, and for the most part, that perspective is not respected by the city leaders. Problems were being ignored, and ignored problems won’t be fixed. For a while we had a local radio station with talk hosts who gave a voice to the regular citizen. But both hosts were fired after stepping on the wrong toes. I produce most of the content on warnerrobinswatchdog.com , but comments and articles are welcomed and requested from anyone who would like to participate. (I will exercise some editorial content restraint if necessary to keep the discussion civil and suitable for a general audience) What do you like to do in your spare time? I said in an article that I would like to sit on the porch and bark at passing cars. Although in jest, I really wish there were other local media outlets offering critical analysis of the city’s business so I wouldn’t feel compelled to maintain this site. Sometimes this isn’t fun at all. I do like to craft things with wood and gardening can be fun.
11 Questions with the Watchdog By Brad Emerton Many events have occurred during the last several years in the city governance of Warner Robins which has caused a great deal of discontent with its citizens. As a response to this discord, several grassroots movements have formed. One such movement has been the Warner Robins Watchdog. Unlike other local political movements, Warner Robins Watchdog is an online movement. Watchdog uses blogs, links to relevant news articles, and entertaining cartoon parodies to provide awareness of issues surrounding Warner Robins politics. Despite the controversy, love it or hate it, Watchdog has become an opinion leader that most people interested in local politics are following. The question all followers have remains, who is Watchdog?
What event made you decide to start your website (the straw that broke the camel's back if you will)? There were three straws that led to the site. First was the firing of radio host Jeff Scott. I enjoyed his show even though I only agreed with him about half the time. He was suspended/fired shortly after he got sideways with someone’s political agenda. The second straw was when WRWR played the threatening voicemails that the mayor left on their answering machine. The final straw was the firing of Kris Vermillion. Our town and WRWR were very lucky to get such a talented and well educated talk host. He was entertaining and educational on many subjects, but he dared speak about the political influence of a few select people in this town, and that irritated the wrong person. So they canned Kris. After that it seemed that WRWR chose to ignore local controversy, so someone had to step in and fill the void. What do you hope to see happen in Warner Robins during 2012? My hopes are modest so that I will not be disappointed. I would like the city to build the projects they approved and funded in the past - without moving them or spending more money on extensive redesigns. I would like our city to stay out of the national news except when we win the boys and girls World Series. What do you perceive the city's best strength to be? The patriotism of the people of this town is inspiring. A lot of people talk about how bad it would be for Robins AFB to close, but the concern is usually expressed in how much it would hurt the economy. I think the greater loss would be to the USAF, because it would be nearly impossible to get a community as supportive and committed as Warner Robins. The city's worst weakness? I think the lack of a plan or vision for revitalizing downtown, particularly Commercial Circle. This is not the fault of anyone specifically in the current administration, they inherited a dis-
8 JAN 9 - FEB 6, 2012
aster. I have great respect for anyone willing to open a business in the circle, because the city is extremely slow to make it better. Commercial Circle is like the city’s front door, and that door needs more than a coat of paint. You have been very critical of Mayor Shaheen, is there anything you believe he has done right during his term in office? Clearly, I am not happy with Mayor Shaheen, but I have written a couple of favorable articles about him. I do believe he has some strong character traits. I believe he loves the city as much or more than many citizens. He is very loyal to his friends. For example, he came to the aid of Mrs. Williams when her husband was arrested and indicted. The easy and politically expedient thing for him to do would be to keep his distance from the whole event. He also conducted himself in the highest decorum and honor at the September 6th City Council meeting. He addressed both the triumph and the tragedy this community experienced in the month of August. That was the month we lost a local soldier in combat and the Warner Robins All Stars made it to the Little League World Series. He presented the welldeserved award of the key to the city to the Warner Robins All Star Little League team. Following that, he recognized the family of Army Specialist Mark J. Downer who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country. It would have been easier to address these diverse concerns at different events. But he offered words of inspiration and condolence admirably. Where did your inspiration for the cartoon parodies come from? There were a lot of things I wanted to say about the city, but didn’t feel a letter to the editor would get much traction or effectively communicate what I wanted to say. I had dabbled in computer media and found a program that I could use to bring some life to my words. I usually read a news article that sparks some sense of irony, scandal or silliness in city business and just write down my thoughts. Then I write a little skit to give my ideas some character. What do you believe to be the worst events in Warner Robins city governance during 2011? I have a lot of issues that I could bring up here, but two events jump out in my mind. I think that the “emergency purchase” of a car for the mayor rings of scandal. People might be surprised that I don’t really have a problem with the mayor having a nice, city provided, vehicle. But it was still just a ‘nice to have’ not an emergency. The bid request was also issued over a holiday weekend which did not allow for five business days to pass. The fact that the purchase went to a political ally of the mayor creates the appearance of impropriety. I wish it was investigated by a state agency. The other event was bad not for political reasons, but because it was another sad day in the sad saga of Councilman Williams. His arrest and indictment on federal charges was very hard to watch and read about. I have contended for a long time that Mr. Williams was unfit for office and should have resigned long ago. The decisions he was making in his personal and political lives did not demonstrate that his judgment was sound. His poor decisions have put him in a very bad position. I find no solace in his predicament. I find it odd that no local lawyer offered their services for his defense in his time of need.

PUT YOUR THAI ON
Try the Kevin Bacon roll, unique to the Thai Pepper.
ou’ve made resolutions. It’s that time of
Y
year and you do it every year. Don’t deny it. Diet and exercise top the list for many, particularly since Georgia so frequently makes the news for its obesity epidemic. But the challenge persists. How do you stay resolute and not compromise flavor? When does the suffering end? How about right now. The doctor is in and she is putting the Thai on. Don’t be scared. This won’t hurt a bit. Unless of course that’s what you order. Because everything at the Thai Pepper is substitution friendly. Established in 2007 and located on Russell Parkway in Warner Robins, they have accumulated something of a cult following over the years. A laid back atmosphere gives even the most timid of chopstick users that ounce of courage they need to try. And the folks at Thai Pepper make it like you want it. The servers are knowledgeable and very good at what they do. The Thai Pepper has the lowest turnover I have ever seen! On to the food! Me, personally....I like it hot. And not two and a half pepper hot either. I mean the fire starter five pepper hot with the spice rack on the side. And yes indeed, they do have a spice rack that you can request at the table. It’s miraculous. These are real Thai peppers, folks, and not for the faint of heart. I have the heart of a lion. So when I ordered the papaya salad I used the words,
“Make mine Thai spicy.” Do not do this lightly. Even I, who am not often challenged by heat, found my lips swelling and sweat beads forming on my forehead. The thing is--spicy Thai chilies have been shown to have amazing health benefits. From their benefits to heart health and inflammation to just getting a better night’s sleep, chilies pack a health punch. But let’s not get too bogged down in the healthy stuff. I also resolved to have more fun! So order a Singha lager, the most popular Thai beer available, with that papaya salad because the combination of the heat and that cold beer is fantastic. The salad has virtually no calories so live a little! If soup is your pleasure and calories aren’t a concern, do the tom kha. Don’t ask any questions, just specify if you want chicken and/or veggies and if you want the heat. You will thank me for it. They don’t give puny servings here so if you don’t want to make this your meal, start with a cup. But you may go back for more. To follow all of this spicy ecstasy, I took it down a little. I opted for the handmade steamed Kanom Jeeb (Thai dumplings) which are stuffed with ground pork, shitake mushrooms, water chestnuts, and bamboo and served with a side of the homemade sweet soy sauce. Dense and hearty, don’t go overboard because there is more to come. No longer breathing the fire of the deeply satisfied,
I’m ready to sample Thai Pepper’s Japanese offerings. You see, it is something of a secret but Thai Pepper boasts some of, if not the best fish in the area. It is AAA sashimi and sushi varieties purchased from the Japanese fish mongers of Atlanta. If you are going to start your adventure, the only place to start it is Thai Pepper. If you want to continue on the path of righteous heat, then the Bangkok Pad Thai and the DUI Noodles are very popular choices with the regulars. And the curries are a real treat! A novitiate to the ways of sushi and sashimi needs to take it easy. Ease into it and don’t do anything intimidating. I myself, on the days when raw food isn’t my pleasure, go for the Green Lantern roll (a nod to my inner geek), which is a cooked roll consisting of shrimp tempura and spicy crab rolled and topped with avocado, then drizzled with unagi and spicy mayo. Some other very popular cooked choices are the Playboy roll and the Samurai roll, which both contain cooked eel, and trust me...eel is a real treat, especially with unagi sauce. Thai Pepper has a few tricks up its sleeve and I intend to find out what they are. I’m a veteran and I’m ready for this. I opt for the Kevin Bacon roll. It’s big....and yes, I said “bacon”. The Kevin Bacon is not only large but very filling. It consists of yellowtail, massage (capelin roe), scallions, and tempura flakes that are combined and rolled, then topped with smoked salmon and crunchy bacon bits and finally drizzled with unagi sauce. Earthy and with a fantastic texture, the smoke is not overpowering and the fish is seamlessly good. It is a great winter sushi choice and packs a punch with ginger and wasabi. Order the Kirin Ichiban lager for this round and you have yourself a winner. Whatever you order at Thai Pepper., it’s going to be good. As one reviewer said about them, “There is no such thing as a bad meal (here)...some meals just taste better than others.” Four different kinds of rice, several different tea choices, both hot and cold, and the most authentic Thai and Japanese flavor you are going to find this side of Buford Highway, Atlanta...try it all. And there is a lot to try! And for the wheat allergic or gluten sensitive...it’s your gustatory playground! RACHEL HELIE Thai Pepper is found at 1806 Russell Parkway Suite 1100 in Warner Robins and is open Monday through Friday 11-2:30 for lunch and 4:30-9:30 for dinner. Dinner is served on Saturday from 12-9:30. Sunday can be reserved for parties and meetings upon request and for special holidays.

SCENE listen up Travis Denning: Emerging Talent in the Mid-State few months ago, I sat down with Homeless Hill and was treated to the company of a group of pretty cool guys, dedicated musicians each in their own right. The youngest among them, guitarist Travis Denning, was the most recent addition to the band and not so long ago a graduate of Warner Robins High School. When drummer, Danny Savage, said that Travis could play anything with strings I had no doubt the statement had merit. But then I listened to the tracks from his upcoming solo EP. You see, I knew Travis plays a lot and with a lot of different people, that he has a quality of self-contained discipline, but what I didn’t know when I met him then is that the evolution of his sound and ability as a songwriter is far beyond his years. While learning guitar at the age of ten, Travis was given the benefit of an intuitive teacher, and very encouraging parents. At that stage in the game, Denning’s song of choice was AC/DC’s Highway to Hell. But true to the form of an afficianado, he has since branched far outside of rock ‘n roll’s boundaries. These days Denning is exploring the deep and fertile roots of country music. You can often find him playing a cover of Luke Bryan’s “All My Friends” to the late night crowds at the numerous gigs he performs all over the state. One of his

Denning plays the Cavern on January 28th with Homeless Hill
all time favorite HoCo spots is the Tavern at Southland Station which hosts music throughout the week and brings in a good crowd. “The place gets packed and the people who come to see the shows are great. The staff is really friendly and more like friends than people who work as your bartender or server. It’s a really great place to play at.” In Macon he has a soft spot for the Cox Capitol Theatre, where he played with Chris Hicks and had a great time. “But the Hummingbird is a lot of fun too!”, he mentions as an aside. Denning’s favorite song to listen to these days is, hands down, “Jolene” by Ray LaMontagne, a classic anthem of the rugged individualism that country music embodies. “Every time I hear it I think, damn I really wish I had written this!” On top of some heavy blues, found in songs Denning has written like “No Town” and the definite undercurrent of rock and roll that permeates his guitar style, these elements are found in his own songwriting. Lyrics like those found in Just Jaded, an off kilter melodic offering with a little bit of grit has Denning often compared to Niel Young “I have a story to tell. I want as many people as possible to hear it. I live for those moments when someone tells me how much hearing my song meant to them. It ‘s happened a handful of times and it drives me forward. I’m ready to do this.” Travis Denning's EP, “Everything That I Am” is available at the end of this month and consists of 7 songs. It can be purchased at $5 wherever Travis performs. Chevrolet Gets Fans To Choose Super Bowl Spots Warner Robins filmmaker makes final cut - View to Win up to $10K MSN and Chevrolet held a 30-second commercial contest in which aspiring film makers could submit their work for a chance at their commercial airing during the 2012 Super Bowl. Warner Robins native Brian Ezeike was one such lucky finalist, chosen from hundreds and one of fifteen from the United States, to compete in the online competition. General Motors is planning to have five 30-second spots on Feb. 5, one of which will go to the winner of this competition. Ad time has been selling for upward of $3.5 million for a 30-second space, per analysts, but companies with multiple spots usually pay a lower bundle rate. The Chevy Super Bowl event, under a “Chevrolet Route 66” umbrella, is running now through Jan. 26, 2012. After that, Chevy execs will look at the films that have received the most views to help make their final selection. Brian's video, titled "Miss Van der Volt" already has over 12,000 views. But every view, "thumbs up" and share counts toward the popularity of his submission. Unfortunately, Chevrolet reserves the right to choose their fave commercial to air during the Super Bowl, but having the most votes couldn't hurt. Chevy is also sweetening the deal with a $15,000 prize purse for visitors to their site that registers, shares and votes for their favorite submission. This contest asks visitors to register, submit an inspiring essay, and watch and share films for a chance to win a portion of a $15,000 purse prize. All this for simply sharing films with friends, submitting an inspiring essay on where you would like to drive, and climbing the website leaderboard.
Brian's video got a shout out on Forbes.com, the author saying, "So far, the most favored spot features a smoosh-faced bulldog taking a fantasy ride in a Camaro. Given the fact that animal commercials are a Super Bowl cliché, the spot comes up a yawn. Instead, click on “Spy Thriller” or try the zaftig “Miss Van Der Volt”. Check out and share Brian's video and browse thru dozens more by visiting http://chevroletroute66.msn.com

n the months before their deaths, relatives say Mildred and Jewel Cleveland had struggled living in the same house with Mildred's grown son, Jason Howard. Jobless and socially withdrawn, Howard was a disturbed man who had been committed to a mental institution for schizophrenia following his arrest for robbing a bank. Although his mother thought that Howard could be rehabilitated and insisted that he live with them, relatives say her husband, Jewel, wasn't so sure. Police think that after killing and burying the Clevelands, Jason Howard continued to live in the house. He paid bills, cared for the family pets, and even took a trip to the family's vacation home. With the aid of cadaver dogs, Liberty County police found JASON HOWARD Arrested 4/13/2009 the bodies of Jewel and Mildred Cleveland wrapped in tarps and buried in a 4 Cts Felony Murder barn on June 15, 2004. An autopsy later confirmed that both had been shot in the head and that Mildred had been beaten first. In his own words from a November 1994 note, Howard explained: “Let it be known that I, Jason M. Howard, can be extremely paranoid, therefore as a fugitive I will not only be carrying firearms but explosives as well...I'm not dangerous until I am crossed or cornered, so stay away. Keep away and don't blame me for a dead tactical team.” For the next several years, Howard would live in the woods in Macon, in a camp he constructed out of camouflage tarps and tents and everything else he could find. He was featured on America’s Most Wanted during those years, though he would elude arrest until 2009, when Macon Police found him breaking into a rental car. Some months later, a friend of the 11th Hour, and a cross country runner, came across Howard’s camp in the woods. In it three journals were found. What follows is a page of one of these journals, the first in a series of pages that look inside the head of a suspected killer.
