STORY IDEAS AND COMMENTS

by JENNY MURR

editor.11thHourHoCo@gmail.com

or the first time since it opened, I ventured to the Georgia National Fair last weekend. It’s not that I don’t like to have fun, I do…it’s just that my memories of the fair are those of a 14-year-old and include dusty paths leading to rickety rides run by skuzzy carnies in need of a long bath. The toothless smiles of the games operators promised a winner every time but I was too repulsed to try get close enough to these people to take the challenge. My memories of going to the fair are far from fond, and while I still am less than elated at the thought of a return visit, I must say that those memories have been replaced with something a bit more positive. Instead of those dusty straw strewn paths, I found a paved thoroughfare winding throughout the entire area. There were wheelchairs, wagons, and strollers for rent. Passage was easy for those on foot and those with wheels. Attendants were helpful and happy; something that is hard to find these days. Bathrooms were clean and welcoming, not like the portapotties of old. The entire environment was clean and well maintained; the layout of the event made sense…all of the rides kept in one area, exhibits in another, and there was plenty of room to move around. The food seemed, for many, the main attraction. Fairgoers happily stood in long lines

drooling for that first taste of funnel cake, chicken on a stick, or cotton candy. Even I got caught up in the promise of some savory delight, but sadly I was disappointed. Perhaps my palate has matured too much, but the only thing I found slightly tasty was the green apple covered in caramel…now that was amazing! Exhibits were crammed into every inch of each building. Dioramas and tri-fold displays informed me of things for which I never wondered…the importance of duct tape, forestry issues, and such. “Do students still do these worthless projects? Really?” my friend asked. I had to agree— in this time of computers and cell phones it seems to me that these competitions should require a technological element. I give the competitors an A for effort, but the contest planning committee failed miserably in my book. I am not a ride-goer, but I must admit that my favorite part of the fair was the Agri-lift that gently transported me to the other side of the fairgrounds. From my vantage point far above the ground, I was able to see everything! Yes, my day at the fair was better than I expected but still not comparable to that of a wide-eyed child. I appreciate the efforts of everyone involved in bringing this event to our community, but I’ll save my energy for a funfilled day of shopping.

FALL FESTS AND HALLOWEEN FUN

The long held Halloween experience Underworld Macon is taking a hiatus this year and that curdles the blood of local Halloween thrill seekers. But don’t be dismayed, there are several options available to satisfy your thirst for October entertainment.

Corn Maze at Lane Southern Orchards

For four years now, Lane Southern Orchards has treated the community to an A-MAIZE-INGLY good time. Each year, a theme is chosen and a blueprint is created to bring forth a unique design specially designed to befuddle Middle Georgia. In July, the corn is planted and, in September, when the corn is just 2 feet high, a professional team comes to perform their magic—carving out a labyrinth of turns and twists sure to bewilder the most avid puzzle solver. But don’t worry, the path is strategically labeled with hints and you can even get help via Corn Texting. While you are in the maze, be sure to look for the “CORNUNDRUMS”—23 signs posted along the way, find them all and be entered in a special drawing. Combined with hay rides, bon fires, shopping in the café and unlimited access, the Corn Maze will keep your family busy all day. The Corn Maze is open all season with a special Fall Festival on October 22. The fundraiser benefits the Children’s Hospital in Macon and offers additional activities: pedal tractor races, kiddie corral with a moonwalk and slides, live music, pumpkin carving and more. Last year, this event raised $5,000 for the hospital and Lane employees visited with hospitalized kids, bringing actual pumpkins that they could all decorate. Lane Southern Orchards is located on Hwy 96 in Ft. Valley. For more information, visit the website at www.lanesouthernorchards.com or call 1-800-27-PEACH

Hell Gate - Rain Church

Oct. 21 – 23; 28 – 30, 8 – 10:30 p.m. Don’t let the fact that a church is presenting this experience lull you into a false sense of security; this production offers a spine chilling reality rivaling anything you will find at any local haunt. The difference? While the scenes depicted at a Halloween haunt might shake you up for a minute, the scenes you find at Hell Gate might just haunt you enough to change your life. “Drama is not new as far as evangelism goes,” said Pastor Paula Johns. 06 OCTOBER 14 - 28, 2011

“When Amiee Semple McPherson drew hundreds of people into the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles with drama, Sister Aimee said she ‘would not hesitate to use the devil's tools to tear down the devil's house.’ She was referring to Hollywood values. Since then, drama has been a successful medium in worship and evangelism for the church in general.” Johns’ church, established in 1943, has utilized drama in effective ministry for years. This year, the church started in July making plans for Hell Gate 2011. “It has a life and spirit of its’ own, grabbing into its’ clutches, actors, leaders, and a pull on the community to come see what Hell Gate is about,” Johns said. “It is a reality walk through that is shaking to say the least. The age old story of good and evil dressed in dynamic costuming and professional make up.” There are guns and spirits, and evil, but the final scene brings it all together with hope for eternal life. “The material is explicit. It is not for young children,” Johns cautions. The production runs Friday – Sunday, October 21-23 and Friday- Sunday, October 28-30 from 8-10:30 pm at The Rain, 257 Gunn Road. The tours are about 20-30 minutes. The cost is $8 per ticket. Group rates are available. Parental guidance strongly advised. Call Melanie Doster at The Rain at 478-9537246 Monday- Friday from 9-1pm for information.

In addition to helping the Perry Players, this year the haunt will also help the Red Cross by holding a B.Y.O.B. THE COSTUME SHOP - Locally owned and full of, well... JENNY MURR

M

arion Bradley wanted to work for herself, so in 1985 she began a balloon and costumed delivery company, Balloons We Luv. For 10 years, the business grew with the community and she added clowns and character parties to her list of services; to reflect the addition, the name was changed to Balloons and Parties We Luv, in 1995. Finally, in 2001 she opened a retail shop on Watson Blvd. offering inflatables, gifts and party supplies. Balloons-N-Parties is a Mom & Pop shop that has become the go-to spot for party planners in the Middle Georgia area. And, even though the economy is sluggish at best, this business is still growing! The shop is experiencing growing pains as more costumes are added to the already large selection. As members of the National Costumers Association, the business has special access to companies who are selling costumes. Add that to the vast stock of homemade, one-of-a-kind costumes and you begin to understand the need for larger quarters! An extension of Balloons-N-Parties, the Costume Shop opened its doors just a few weeks ago, and it is already filled to overflowing with just about any type of costume, wig, mask, makeup, decorations, hosiery, gloves, wings, shoes, hats, magic and anything else customers might want. Quality costumes are available for rental year round, starting at just $10 for kids, great for school events—and adults as low as $20. The store also carries a robust selection of theatrical make up and employees are glad to give customers who request it an educational printout to help them apply it. Visitors are treated to a warm welcome and staff eager to help them find that just right outfit. Dressing rooms are ample, something their customers appreciate over the shop’s competitors. “Customer service is our priority,” said Bradley. “There’s someone there to assist you in trying on costumes and we won’t rush you even if it’s getting close to closing time.”

Sexy costumes are by far the most popular costumes, according to Bradley. “Most little girls want to be Princesses and boys-Superheros…and most men just want to be goofy!” she said. To make it easier for customers, the store even offers a Layaway plan for purchases over $50. With only 1/3 of the total down, customers can rest easy knowing their Halloween costume is set aside until October 31st. Although you might think that business slows down once Halloween is over, Bradley will tell you that this is not the case. "Our motto is—We're here all year!—because costumes are needed for more than Halloween!,” she said. Once Halloween is over, they start renting out and selling costumes for Christmas: Santa, Mrs. Claus, Reindeer, Elves, Snowmen, Mary, Joseph, Wise men, Angels, and more. The Costume Shop is located at 1840 Watson Blvd; hours of operation are Monday – Saturday 10-8 p.m., and Sunday 1 – 6 p.m. Hours will be extended as necessary to accommodate customer needs. For more information, call 478-929-3500. Balloons-N-Parties is located at 1300 Watson Blvd. For more information, call 478-328-1234 or visit their website at www.balloonsnparties.com

WINGS AND WHEELS ATTRACTS 297 VEHICLES The 19th Annual Wings and Wheels Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show on October 8, turned out to be one of the largest shows ever held at the Museum of Aviation. A total of 297 vehicles were at the show, with 274 competing for trophies and the other 23 entered for display only. “It was difficult to pick the trophy winners because there were so many spectacular vehicles,” said Show Chairman Bob Dubiel. “But 40 volunteer judges looked at each one and we gave away trophies to the top-scoring 113 vehicles.” Each vehicle was scored on the condition and appearance of its paint job, exterior components, and its interior and engine compartment. And cars could get an extra 1 to 5 points for any special presentation elements like signs, photos, car history, etc.

Houston County Bands Host 18th Annual Band NightFree Community Concert

of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The purpose of the award is to recognize and celebrate high school classroom

The 18th annual Houston County Band Night will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. at McConnellTalbert stadium. Every middle school band and high school marching band, 13 in all, will be represented. The show is free and open to the public. Band Night began as a high school event to showcase the marching bands from every high school. Young musicians from all eight middle schools have been added to the program to display the growth and popularity of instrumental music within the school system. Participation in Band Night has grown each year. Approximately 1,200 students will perform a mass band rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” At the conclusion of the national anthem, the middle school students will remain on the field and perform two selections together. After the middle school performance, the high school marching bands will entertain the audience with their individual fall shows. The public is invited to attend Band Night to celebrate the achievements of these young musicians and to show support for music education in our public schools. For more information, contact either Andy Hursey, band director at Perry High, at 478-988-6321 or Wally Shaw, band director at Houston County High, at 478-988-6365.

Heart of Georgia Marching Band Invitational, 10/22 teachers. He will be recognized at the NCTE Convention in Chicago, Ill. on Nov. 19, 2011. The NCTE has over 35,000 members and subscribers worldwide. Thompson commented, “Knowing the talented and driven teachers I am surrounded by, both district- and state-wide, I am humbled with such recognition. Without a doubt students are the reason I am an educator, but accolades such as this continue to motivate my desire for collaboration with other educators and innovation within the classroom. This is an honor I will strive to be worthy of throughout the rest of my career.”

The 14th annual Heart of Georgia Marching Band Invitational is held each year at McConnell Talbert Stadium. Hosting bands of all sizes, from various schools across the state. It is an opportunity for band members to perform for an appreciative crowd and to be appropriately rewarded for their excellence, hard work and dedication to this activity. It is also an opportunity for these same students to see, hear and appreciate the work of other band students whose performances may expose these young musicians to a wide variety of music and visual concepts. McConnell-Talbert Stadium located across the street from the campus of Warner Robins High School in Warner Robins GA. Admission: adults $10 / students $5.

At Home With Homeless Hill RACHEL HELIE hen I met up with the boys of Homeless Hill, I had no clear idea what to expect. As a girl raised on rock and roll by a guitarist, the reckless live and let live ideology was glorified and embraced. What was not is the kind of work ethic and determination that these guys demonstrate. That, I think, is what is putting Homeless Hill and Warner Robins on the rock and roll map. “I was walking into J&M Pharmacy the other day to pick up my script and I heard our music playing!” says Darin Curtis, lead singer and songwriter for Homeless Hill. “The people who work there had our Broken Bones video playing in the back. It was…crazy!” This is Darin’s reaction to hearing the band played by an absolute stranger in public for the first time. And for Darin, the songs are what he labors to perfect. “I consider myself a songwriter first and foremost.” Broken Bones is a rock anthem but Curtis has range. His lyrics are contemplative and fierce, and the way he sings them ….well. We all know what rock and roll does to the ladies. Let’s just say his soulful, gritty delivery leaves nothing to be desired and being easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt the band’s front man either. Adam Crump, bassist for Homeless Hill, met Darin in high school; he was in tenth grade, Curtis was in ninth. Darin wanted to play, come hell or high water, and Adam was going to play with him. Adam laughs when he reminisces about the early days of learning to play. “We were so bad!” he laughs. “We practiced in a utility shed. We called it the Green House because it was painted that color but it was basically just an outdoor storage building sitting waist high off the ground.” He smiles when he remembers some of the early practices. “We put an air conditioner on a stool and just let it run…didn’t put it in the window or anything. “ I laugh and ask him if they could even hear themselves playing. “No way! We sounded awful! Didn’t even occur to us that it might not be safe either!” The band has a lot of stories about the early days of

With over 2500 visitors, the first festival in over 10 years provided the perfect platform for businesses and vendors to reach their target audience. Ginger Huff, owner of Salon Fusion, was elated with the response she received at the festival. "Our experience at the festival allowed us to just have fun with the crowd," she said. "We would definitely do this again!" Salon Fusion raffled a $300 spa package...for the price of ticket ($1) festival goers could enter to "feel the peace you seek." The winner of the raffle was Debby Gairrigus who received a 1 hour massage, 1 hour facial, a body scrub, a gourmet lunch and a color and cut. Food, face painting, hair bows, goat soap, and jams and jellies were just a few of the items that shoppers found on Commercial Circle. The stage was graced by the area's most talented performers and bands while door prizes were given out during each break. Down the street, the community was treated to a stroll down memory lane as the parking lot of Giant Foods was filled with hot rods and vintage cars. Food, vendors and music made an otherwise dull day a day to remember. The next International City Festival is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 10. Keep up with the festival at www.wrdda.org/festival or follow them on Facebook. For more information, contact them at internationalcityfestival@gmail.com
