s the November 8th election approaches, candidates are tossing their hats into the political ring vying for 3 council seats. As editor of this publication, it is not my intention to support one candidate over the other; however, on occasion I will be offering my personal observations regarding comments made by the candidates. In a recent article by Macon Telegraph, a City Council candidate made a comment that made me question her agenda. Alexandra Talley, who is running for the Post 2 City Council seat, stated “The focus of our electorate needs to be beyond just the (law enforcement center) and Commercial Circle.” In a Houston Home Journal, Talley stated, “We need to move forward, to be more progressive.” As I see it, the renovation of Commercial Circle and the building of a law enforcement center are indications of moving forward and being progressive. In a nation that is obsessed with “going Green,” Warner Robins officials should be commended, not criticized, for their desire to give Commercial Circle a facelift. Revitalization of this area will benefit the
entire community. #1 – It is a fact that the area between Davis Drive and Robins Air Force Base has become riddled with drugs and crime. Ask any police officer and he will tell you not be come to this area of town after dark. #2 – College students, who come to satellite campuses located downtown, would like to have an area to relax, get a bite to eat, and study. There’s not much to offer them at this time. #3 – RAFB employees and enlisted personnel need shopping, dining, and entertainment located close to the base. By renovating this area, businesses will have a reason to come to the base rather than the base having to travel to the west side of town. #4 – As RAFB’s closest neighbor, Warner Robins is a reflection of the base. Specifically, the downtown area is the “front porch” to the base…and boy, does that front porch need cleaning up! Do tell, Ms. Talley, what area of Warner Robins would you focus on? In your opinion, what part of our city needs attention more than Commercial Circle, Davis Drive and east Watson Blvd?

LOCAL HERO CREATES NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL TO HONOR OUR MILITARY ON 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF SEPTEMBER 11TH JENNY MURR “Each day in Katar we would have a fallen warrior ceremony to honor the fallen warriors who had passed away that day,” said Charles DeJournett, a 10-year Air Force Veteran and a current member of the 116th Air National Guard. That memory is the catalyst behind his vision to create an event to honor heroes of every kind. “We want to honor the memory of people who have given all and those who, on a daily basis, who give so much.” The 10th Anniversary of the tragedy of September 11 seemed to be the perfect time for DeJournett to launch the first Heroes Music Festival. “We want to create an annual event that, no matter where it’s held, will impact the local communities by honoring their hometown heroes: firemen, police, rescue, medical teams, etc,” DeJournett said. At this first event, they will work with leaders from the Wounded Warriors Project to bring in and honor wounded warriors from Georgia; when it is held in other areas of the nation they will bring in their local wounded warriors. The Air Force Reserve “Generation Band" will kick off the four day festival on Thursday, September 8; followed by Rodney Atkins, Darryl Worley, Sessions Road, and more. In a matter of a few days, Georgia’s public school system became a national laughingstock. Currently, 179 teachers and administrators are on paid leave in the Atlanta Public School system and we are left to wonder; “How does this affect our children? What does this mean for us?” Our Houston county schools outperform many in the state, based on CRCT scores, but in light of the recent scandal, many parents are asking, “Are those scores a fair representation of my child’s education? Is my kid being cheated?” According to the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, all schools in Georgia have been investigated for signs of cheating. Compared to counties like Bibb where 2 schools presented severe concern and twelve others moderate, Houston County has come out of the scandal unscathed. Only three of our county schools have been flagged as presenting mini-

mal concern: Miller Elementary, Peal Stephens Elementary, and David A. Perdue Elementary. Dr. Eric Payne, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning for the Houston County school system states that “Houston County has always emphasized integrity in testing.” This is the “Houston County Way”. The CRCT, or Criterion Referenced Competency Test, was implemented in response to No Child Left Behind and the statewide curriculum, GPS (Georgia Performance Standard). Currently, two thirds of the states in the nation use this model. It measures the extent to which schools comply with a standard of what is considered acceptable learning. Each state determines what is acceptable. Non-norm referenced tests, like the Criterion model, cannot be used as a standard to determine whether a child is gifted or may need access to special education. The tests have been heavily criticized by many in the education community as being unfairly biased in favor of more affluent school districts, where resources are more abundant, and

Perry High School has won the Outstanding Postsecondary/Adult Agricultural Education Program award for the Southeastern U.S., under the leadership of Dr. Phil Gentry, Perry High School agriculture teacher. ROBIN’S NATIVE REFLECTS HIS LOVE OF HOMETOWN IN ART AND DESIGN the festival. I wanted to make the point that the DDA didn’t need to go ‘out of town’ to get talented people to do this. I designed a series of concept logos around their theme ‘Remembering Yesterday, Celebrating Tomorrow.’ They chose a favorite so I also designed a new flyer to spread the word. Additionally I am donating 2 of my art prints for auction. One is depicting a WWI aerial combat scene called ‘Nieport 17 Victory,’ and a depiction of the B-29 Enola Gay called,‘Enola Gay at Sunrise.’ Each will be personally signed and framed.

orn in Miami, artist David Collins was raised in Warner Robins. Always creative,David enrolled in the Art Institute of Atlanta in Graphic Design and majored in 3D Animation. Having worked with some of the brightest in the industry, he has returned to Warner Robins where he is a full time illustrator and markets his many different design, marketing and art skills through his own web site. David is the designer of the new logo for the International City Fall Festival. I had the wonderful opportunity to ask David about the upcoming festival as well as his work. How unusual is the 3D? What can you add for the layman? 3D modeling and animation is building virtual objects and scenes in 3Dimensional virtual space. It took off after the movies Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park were released. I utilize that technology for services such as product concept mock-ups, design, animation and artwork. I can use 3D for pre-production concept design, video productions, web graphics, and high resolution art for print. It is my favorite form of production, combining art and design with advanced technology. It’s one form of production that is almost unique to me in the middle Georgia area and I want everyone to know what I can do with it.
I see your own avatar and something called Toon Up on your website. Whats up? Simple…you want to be a unique 2D character? I can make anyone a cartoon with a service I call a ‘Toon Up’ It’s not too unlike a caricature, and it’s meant to add to a client’s marketing and branding presence. It’s Fun! Are planes, cars, and motorcycles a personal interest? Are the images on your website for sale?
Yes and yes. Growing up next to RAFB I came to love military aircraft at an early age, but cars and bikes fascinated me, too. I started working on vehicle illustration as a creative outlet. Some people do landscapes, some do portraits. Give me an aerial battle to accurately and dramatically portray a dogfight and I’m good. Very soon all my art work will be available on my website as high quality prints, in varied sizes, signed and framed. I also plan to sell locally.
How did you become involved in the International City Festival? Facebook. A friend ‘Liked’it so I went to the ‘ICFF’page and the www.wrdda.org site and knew I wanted to help revitalize downtown Warner Robins. Soon I was collaborating with chairperson Gena DeBoe and her committee.
What do you want to see/do at the festival? I want a clear sky, cool weather and lot’s of people having fun and enjoying downtown Warner Robins.That way it’ll make my job as photographer that day all the easier. Any favorite or much admired illustrator/artist or historical period? Leonardo DaVinci is my biggest historic artist inspiration. He was the absolute perfect designer/engineer. I love science-fiction concept design, everything from Ralph McQuarrie to Ryan Church! I love the 1940’s and WWII. Nose Art on fighters and bombers painted by the talents of the day, especially Alberto Vargas, capture the beauty of the All American Woman. The great lines of classic 1940’s cars! And give me a P-51 Mustang Any day’ Of course this period of time is also when classic Warner Brothers cartoon shorts and Walt Disney films began too. Doesn’t get better than that.

ining at a new restaurant can be quite daunting, especially if it has a robust menu. If you are like me, you aren’t a risk taker; instead, you find something that looks familiar and it becomes your signature dish each time you return. What you don’t realize, and what I just learned, is that when we order something “safe” from the menu, we are cheating ourselves of a culinary journey filled with tasty treasures. In the past, when dining at FATZ Café, I would order Calabash Chicken and I was never disappointed. The plump chicken tenders, marinated for 24 hours, are hand-breaded and fried to perfection; paired with a side of ranch dressing, these golden fingers hit the spot. But this week, I allowed the manager, David Shaver, to choose my meal and I had an adventure that has forever quashed my desire to find something “safe” on the menu. Now I don’t like anything that is so spicy that my nose runs, so I would normally balk at the mere mention of anything Cajun and the word Firecracker would definitely keep me from ordering the dish. But the Cajun Firecracker Sticks were not too spicy and this turned out to be the second of two favorites of the day. The “sticks” are a combination of spicy Shrimp, andouille sausage, seared onions and peppers, spinach and melted Jalapeno

Jack cheese rolled in flaky, crisp tomatobasil tortillas and served with FATZ Onyum Sauce and spicy ranch dip. By far, the Honey BBQ Chicken Nachos was the winning taste of the day. The tri-colored tortilla chips, topped with Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheese, black beans and the World Famous Calabash Chicken tossed in honey BBQ sauce makes a beautiful presentation; and it tastes as good as it looks! But it’s a lot of food, so make sure you have a dining partner or order it as the entrée. If you’re looking for a new seafood dish, try the Parmesan Encrusted Basa fish. A Basa fish is a white, flaky, mild catfish found in Southeast Asia, mainly in Vietnam. Coated with Panko bread crumbs, aged Parmesan Cheese and lightly sautéed, the fish is served over a bed of rice pilaf. It has a buttery taste and is different than any fish I’ve ever tried. FATZ has a huge menu that contains so many choices that even the pickiest eater can find something; and prices range from $4.99 - $16.99. Monday thru Friday, a special lunch menu offers selections priced for any budget and time constriction. Dieting diners can choose entrees from FATZ Lite Side menu; all items are under 550 calories and packed full of taste. On Tuesdays, guests, at least 50 years young, can choose from a special menu

ne of the best things the military life has offered is a sense of camaraderie, but that is being snuffed out little by little. For example, it used to be that when a military member drove up to the base’s entry point that the troop was saluted by another troop. There was an undeniable recognition that both members belonged in the same weave and had the same way of life. But, now, the active duty member is likely to be waved through by Old Man River or some other out-of-shape hired guard who cannot dutifully salute military. (And can this dilapidated hired help actually protect the gate from a terrorist’s attempt to plow them down [eyebrow raised]? Is Rip Van Winkle prepared to sprint in hot pursuit and put a cap in someone’s ass, for real?) This is being contracted out because most of the military’s security forces are constantly in the war zones and the others are left on the base cover “more pressing� issues like, well, law enforcement. Too, there is an ongoing attempt to save money with scab labor instead of full-blooded active duty members in almost all corners of the service in varying degrees. That is easily noticeable from something like the grounds maintenance (talk about no “boots on the grounds�) to all ranges of medical personnel. However, one new contracting measure being put into place this summer specifically tunneled into my craw. Alas, the Catholic priests are the next in line to be out of the uniform (even though they are “men of the cloth�). Unbelievably, the new guidelines to save money, more-so privatize certain aspects of the military, and help keep the
Bishop’s private sector priestly needs met include hiring out the Air Force’s Catholic priests. It has been emphasized that “all efforts� [insert sarcastic ‘eye roll’] will be made to hire retired military priests to fill these slots, but it still reeks. (And, logically, if you “breed out� any incoming priests from joining the military, then one day there won’t be any retired military priests to hire---the well will be dried up.) These priests should be active duty. Real Catholic troops deserve real military priests. Imagine being a Catholic soldier on her death bed after being blown up in a car bomb and the only priest available for the Last Rites is some “Bagram-Come-Lately� who had spent the bulk of his years marrying couples and ministering at old folks’ homes, but not dealing with war issues? Would this really be of comfort to this soldier? She needs someone she can bond with; someone who feels the pain and struggles of being military, an active duty priest. Troops often approach their priests for hope and something to believe in before going off to a war zone. They are afraid of what might happen to them “over there�. A priest who has been in those combat areas and dealt with the all the ugly realities of war are much better prepared to handle these military-specific crises. On Memorial Day, my husband and I just lost a college friend (who was helping to build a new road) in a car bomb in Afghanistan, Lt. Col. Mark Stratton. I sincerely hope his family was able to be comforted by a spiritual leader that truly knew and understood how they got to where they are now.

o see live music succeed in this town is what we need. Well, we got it with a little place down off of Watson called ‘Friends on the Hill’. Owners Justin and Ryan Crofutt, brothers by birth, partners by choice and friends by the very definition of the word, have created one of the best live music scene in Warner Robins. Best put in their own words, “ We are not giving up on rock”. This is an establishment that has been around for over 31 years and after meeting with them, can tell you I expect to see them around for, well, a long, long time. I was immediately drawn to these dudes because we share a common language: Hospitality. Having backgrounds in all areas of F&B service and administration, they truly get the value of a handshake and a welcome to their establishment. They get how important it is to have an environment where people can have fun, be themselves and feel safe. They believe in great service and all you have to do is go visit Jennifer during Happy Hour Monday through Friday to experience that. Not only do they have great drink prices and fantastic food, they have the best cover charge in town and book the best local music in town. “We are proud of the local music here in town and feel that there will always be a place for musicians and live entertainment here,” Justin said. Bands like Plethra, Blood Country, Sidewinder and Ransom play there frequently and, whenever I talk to these bands, I always hear about how happy they are with this venue and how excited they are whenever they can book there. You can rest assured that Friends on the Hill is going to exceed your expectations when it comes to live entertainment and the overall nightlife experience. But wait, there’s more. They also have something for all you pool, dart and beer pong players. They host a multitude of events from APA 9 Ball & 8 Ball, soft tip and steel tip dart leagues and, as of this week, Beer Pong. There’s Funny Fruit machines, assorted other games and of course, a jukebox. I asked the guys about future plans and Justin told me they just want to “keep the tradition going.” They definitely have a game plan for their venue and it may involve things from an outdoor deck to new and innovative live music ideas; but, for the most part, they are just taking it day by day and enjoying the experience of being establishment owners. If you have not been by Friends on the Hill, go check them out, have a great beverage, try their awesome Hill-Philly Sandwich, listen to some great entertainment and have a good time. How often do people nowadays say we need more jobs? The reality is there are marginal changes we can make which will create local jobs. Next time you hear someone say we need more jobs, tell them it can be as simple as recycling. Recycling is probably the best form of base income we can create with little to no effort. Metal salvage yards and Happy Hour are two prime examples of local job creators, which turn trash into money. Not only do these entities generate revenue to the local economy, they also cut down costs to maintain our landfill. The faster we fill an area of the landfill, the faster money must be spent to expand. The expansion of a landfill is typically done by a non-locally based company due to low demand over reasonable driving distances. Keeping materials out of our landfill, which do not break down and give off methane gas, helps create a more efficient landfill. We are fortunate to have a landfill that turns methane into electricity with the assistance of Flint Energies. Common sense dictates, the higher the methane output is by volume, the cheaper and more efficient generating electricity would be. This concept applies to recyclable material such as glass, plastic, and metal, all of which are collected by local businesses and sold abroad. Electricity generated here, creates jobs here. The largest local economic impact is from selling recyclables to companies abroad; who then turn them into raw materials for new products. Surely, you have seen people picking up dilapidated grills, broken bicycles, and rusty lawn furniture off the side of the road in order to collect money at scrap yards. They then spend that money in local businesses. At today’s prices, an average pickup truck load will yield $100 to $200. The problem is that most people have small amounts of these materials to dispose of. We can separate scrap metals out of our trash can, into an old box and set it out to the road labeled free scrap metal. Somebody will pick it up. Or we can save up glass, certain plastics, and newspapers then drop them off at Happy Hour when we are travelling that direction. I DON’T KNOW MUCH... But I know what I know and I know that a town without music and art is lacking. The quote ‘it takes a village’ comes to mind because it is truly representative of this thought. Warner Robins is a town comprised of many things. We have the Base, we have many business that call Wartown hometown. But what does it all mean if we don’t have culture and art and music. I encourage everyone who reads this to go out and support local music and expressions of art. Be it Rock or Jazz or high school performances or, here’s a great one, go listen to the Air Force Reserve Band play at the U. S. Air Force Museum of Aviation every Tuesday through the month of September. Here’s another one. Go check out the International City Festival to be held at Commercial Circle on October 1st from 9am to 6pm. Great music, fun and activities for the kids. There’s so many ways to support local music and art in our town but it’s going to take you to be a part of it. So I encourage you to make some time to go see that band or that art display or that festival and see what you’ve been missing.

Yes it’s that time again when my favorite band from Florida is back in town at Yesterdaze to scratch, meow and purr they’re way through musical mayhem as they play the greats from Beatles to Lady Gaga and a few fantastic originals. This extraordinary band has played everywhere from Austin, Tx, to St. Simons, Ga., and it is really cool to see them pop in to our town every so often for a show. Recently, Simone & the Supercats won the revered BMA Award for Original Band of the Year and it is my honor to give them a shout out here in the 11th Hour.
