About the NIV

More than sixty years after the vision was cast – and more than 600 million copies later – the New International Version (NIV) is the most widely read modern English Bible translation in the world. That’s because the NIV delivers the very best combination of accuracy and readability. Hodder & Stoughton has been publishing the NIV Bible in British English since the translation was created over forty years ago. We are committed to serving the church with the widest possible range of NIV Bibles at affordable prices. We hope you enjoy reading about these in more detail in this catalogue.

The NIV was always intended to be a translation which changes and develops in line with contemporary language usage and biblical scholarship. As you may know, the NIV was revised and updated in 2011 for the first time in 25 years. The majority of what has changed involves comparatively minor matters of vocabulary, sentence structure and punctuation. Other changes reflect advances in biblical scholarship over the last three decades. All these revisions aim to move the NIV from the English of 1984 to the English of the twenty-first century and are the decisions of the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) – an independent and self-governing body comprised of renowned biblical scholars from across the evangelical spectrum, who meet annually to review the text. Further information about the translation and the work of the CBT can be found at www.biblica.com .

John the Baptist prepares the way

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, a the Son of God, b 2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way’ c

3 ‘a voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.” ’ d

4 And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptised by him in the River Jordan. 6 John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt round his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was his message: ‘After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8 I baptise you with e water, but he will baptise you with e the Holy Spirit.’

The baptism and testing of Jesus

9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan. 10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: ‘You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.’

For children

It is so important to start introducing the Bible to children at a young age. Our range of children’s Bibles includes Christening gift Bibles for marking a baptism or dedication; Bibles for adults and children to read together, and Bibles for older children to begin to begin to read and study for themselves.

The God Files

The number one Bible for every agent of God

Young readers will know and love award-winning Christian children’s author and illustrator Andy Robb from books such as 50 Weirdest Bible Stories and Professor Bumblebrain’s Bonkers Book on Parables. But it’s Andy’s Amazing Agents of God series which has inspired The God Files

This colourful Bible – in which each book is styled as a ‘file’ – will invite children into the story of Scripture by encouraging them to play their part as agents with a mission, inspired by the adventures and impact of the special agents they read about, such as Joseph, David, Esther and Mary. In addition to Agent Profiles, the Bible will feature a wealth of integrated extra content to help children explore faith, learn about God and to start them off on a lifetime of Bible reading.

NIV Journalling Bible in One Year

The  NIV Bible In One Year  is a popular daily Bible reading programme which makes it simple to read through the whole Bible in 365 days. It splits up the Bible into daily readings, with an Old Testament, New Testament and Psalm or Proverbs excerpt for each day of the year. It is ideal for personal devotions or to read as a community and will take you only fifteen minutes a day.

The sequence of Bible readings matches that of Alpha pioneer and HTB vicar, Nicky Gumbel’s Bible in One Year app, in which Nicky provides daily commentary on the chosen passages, accompanied by prayers. Why not make this the year you read the Bible from beginning to end – one of these elegant volumes will help you do just that.

NIV Pew Bibles

The NIV Pew Bibles are available in blue and burgundy hardback editions. Inside both, the Scriptures are set out clearly and legibly in two columns, using a readable 9pt font which makes following along with the Bible reading very easy.

At the front you will find several pages of helpful information such as an alphabetical list of the books of the Bible, signposted passages for help and guidance and a list of well-known biblical characters and events. The maps on the endpapers show the changes in Holy Land topography from Abraham to Paul. Page numbers match those of the Lectern Bible and both the Larger Print Pew Bibles on p.42.

NIV Popular Blue Hardback Bible

NIV Popular Burgundy Hardback Bible

Larger Print Pew Bibles

In every congregation there will be members for whom the text in the standard-sized NIV pew Bibles is too small to be read comfortably. To meet this need, we have enlarged our pew editions to create the NIV Larger Print Hardback Bibles in blue and burgundy. Both of these are identical in design and contents to the existing pew Bibles, just with larger, 11pt text. The page numbers therefore also match those found in the standard pew editions.

With larger print

We want to make it easy for anyone, anywhere to read the Bible, and we know that text size is a very important factor to consider when making a Bible purchase. The Bibles on the following pages have been designed especially for those who appreciate a larger font, whether they are reading the Bible at church or at home.

Larger Print Personal Bibles

The new NIV Larger Print Personal range tries to meet the perennial problem of finding larger print text in a compact format by scaling up the Pocket setting onto the 185 x 120 mm page size. Smaller than a regular Bible but with larger text than the Pocket editions, these Bibles are portable and easy to read, and match the pagination of our Pew Bibles.

Both come packaged in an attractive slipcase, and have a presentation page at the beginning for your dedication message. With 11pt font, the text is easy to read in a clear, double-column layout.

23 John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, ‘I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, “Make straight the way for the Lord.” ’ d

24 Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25 questioned him, ‘Why then do you baptise if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?’

26 ‘I baptise with e water,’ John replied, ‘but among you stands one you do not know. 27 He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’

28 This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.

To listen to

Listening to the Bible as an audiobook can be an enjoyable and beneficial way of absorbing Scripture, especially if you learn more by hearing than by reading. It can also help us to cover more of the Bible than we normally would through reading, and we can combine listening with other activities – such as driving the car, or washing up.

The Complete NIV Audio Bible

Ever since he became a Christian at the age of forty, it was  Poirot  actor David Suchet’s dream to make an audio recording of the whole Bible. In between filming the final episodes of  Poirot, David Suchet spent over 200 hours in the recording studio to create the very first full-length audio version of the NIV Bible spoken by a single British actor.

This recording, and the Bible in One Year version, are available on MP3 CD and as audio digital downloads. The MP3 CDs can be used on any device that displays the MP3 symbol. You can transfer the audio files for your personal use onto your computer, smartphone, MP3 player and other compatible devices.

For bookshops

NIV Bible Stockist Scheme

At Hodder Faith we understand how complex buying a Bible can be, and the importance of a well-stocked range in aiding that decision. In order to support Christian bookshops in their mission to serve their customers, the NIV Bible Stockist Scheme can help ensure that your shop is the first and only stop when making an NIV Bible purchase.

Hodder Faith will provide a range of benefits to all bookshops that agree to become NIV Bible Stockists, including extra discount, exclusive Bible promotions, free point-of-sale material and more. In turn, NIV Stockists are expected to keep constant stock of a selected core list of Bibles plus a choice from the wider range, as well as displaying the NIV collection in your shop using the POS material supplied.
