Page 1

From Wildflower Meadows to Mountain Peaks

Unforgettable Holidays in the Hörnerdörfer Region A place where the Bavarian Alps are at their most beautiful, where distant peaks promise breathtaking vistas, where pleasure and relaxation go perfectly hand in hand, and where all the worries of the world seem far away – that is the Hörnerdörfer region in Allgäu. At the foot of the Allgäu Alps – between the towns of Sonthofen and Oberstdorf – lie the five idyllic Hörnerdörfer villages Balderschwang, Bolsterlang, Fischen, Obermaiselstein and Ofterschwang. You will find plenty of inspiration in the range of different activities on offer for everyone, whether you are visiting as a family, a couple, or on your own. Fans of active holidays, kids on holidays, culture enthusiasts, and those looking for some spa-style pampering will all be able to enjoy their very own perfect holiday in the Hörnerdörfer region.

Year-Round Nature Paradise 360 degree mountain views against a backdrop of sun-kissed flower fields. Crystal clear, light blue, sometimes even turquoise waters flow in rivers and lakes across the Iller Valley. While the last bits of snow glitter on Mount Rubihorn in spring, the valley is blooming in thousands of colours. In the summertime the air is filled with the aroma of warm hay, fresh herbs and wild flowers. The soothing tinkling of cowbells follows you wherever you go. A little higher, above the Iller river valley, a sun-drenched plateau looks out over Obermaiselstein, Bolsterlang and Kierwang, all the way to Ofterschwang. The 110 km long, well sign-posted Nordic Walking Park includes the Iller Panoramic Route and the low difficulty Lappach Tour in the 1,100 metre high Balderschwang Alpine Valley. You can do plenty of leisurely hiking and enjoy all the mountain vistas you could ever want at the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. In winter, this mountain paradise is transformed into a winter wonderland, perfect for skiing, cross-country skiing, and winter hikes. Untouched, authentic, and full of charm – that is how the Allgäu traditions come to life in the Hörnerdörfer region.

Balderschwang Bavarian ‘Siberia’ – A Love Bite from Mother Nature The little Alpine village Balderschwang is Germany’s highest altitude community. Its location at 1,044 metres above sea level is virtually fog free and is one of Germany’s most snowsafe locations in winter. Winter fun and sports beckon with 30 kilometres of ski slopes, a cross-country trail network spanning 40 kilometres, a tobogganing and snow tubing run, and many other exciting options. Nagelfluhkette Nature Park offers endless hiking opportunities in the summer. Nature becomes a vivid experience with the 2,000 year old yew tree at the village entrance, picturesque mountain streams, breathtaking views and the Alpine working farms. And yet, this mountain village has managed to remain virtually untouched by time: Tradition lives on in the ‘Viehscheid’ cattle drive events, cultural evenings, and „Bergkilbe“, the parish fair. TIPS: • The Balderschwang ‘Viehscheid’ cattle drive in September • 7 Alpine dairy farms offering cheese tastings • The natural spectacle of the Scheuen Waterfall • Guided snow shoe and ski tours • Balderschwang “Alphorniade” at the end of May • 2,000 year old yew tree • Highest biodiversity in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park

Bolsterlang The Family-Friendly Mountain Village Bolsterlang is situated right in the Nature Park on a vast, sun-kissed plateau over the Iller river valley. ‘Viehscheid’ cattle drive, summer fair, or a mass on the mountain side: Bolsterlang lives and breathes authentic Allgäu tradition. The hiking and ski area starts right on the edge of the village, and rises to a height of 1,800 metres above sea level. In the brightly coloured spring, the summer with its incredible vistas, the mostly fog free autumn so perfect for hiking, or in the glittering winter wonderland – Bolsterlang welcomes visitors all year round. The peaceful mountain village has become an insider tip for archery enthusiasts who value the Alpine Archery Trail and archery training grounds. TIPS: • Premium ski resort just outside the village • Weekly Alpine tours • Shopping: genuine Allgäu wooden clogs • Traditional folk events • Archery bullseye range and 3D Alpine Archery Trail

Fischen im Allgäu Nature Village and health resort with a Fantastic Climate Fischen is located in the picturesque Iller river valley, with breathtaking views of the giants among the Allgäu Alps and the Hörner mountain range. Fresh mountain air, crystal clear water, and a wide range of shopping options and regional delicacies characterise this largest of the five Hörnerdörfer villages. In summer, endless kilometres of trails for leisurely strolls or Nordic walking beckon, the mountain air redolent with the aroma of fresh hay, and meadows dotted with colourful blooms. Trips alongside murmuring mountain creeks, fathomless lakes, and across idyllic rolling hills on an eBike promise an unforgettable experience. TIPS: • Heated waterpark with a 58 m waterslide • eBikes from May to October • Sports and wellness park • Squirrel Forest & minigolf course • 500 year old sawmill • ‘Heimathaus’ with farmers’ and FIS ski museum • Culture and tradition at the Fiskina music pavilion • Night-time skiing and tobogganing & flood-lit slopes • Flood-lit Stinesser family ski lift just outside the village

Obermaiselstein Traditional Mountain Village & Spa Obermaiselstein, the beautiful mountain village with an Alpine wildlife park and show cave, is situated in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park at 848 metres above the Iller Valley. The tinkling of cattle bells accompanies hikers on the certified premium trail to the local peak, Mount Besler. Mountain inns along the way beckon the traveller, offering traditionally home-made mountain cheese. One of the most beautiful attractions awaits you in September: One of the biggest Allgäu ‘Viehscheid’ takes place in Obermaiselstein at the end of the Alpine summer. Around 1,400 cattle are herded into the valley from the twelve surrounding mountain farms. In winter, the free ski bus takes guests to the snow-covered Grasgehren Ski Paradise & Fun Park with its permanent cross-country trail. The perfect ski resort for all the family. TIPS: • Guided tour of Alpine dairies • Free bus for skiers and hikers, and free cross-country slopes • Coppersmith at the village square • Fairytale Trail to ‘Sturmannshöhle’ Cave • Torch-lit hikes

Ofterschwang Home of the World Cup Express Ofterschwang is beautifully set against the rolling mountain meadows above the Iller Valley. You can catch a relaxing ride into the mountains on the World Cup Express right outside the village. In winter, the premium ski resort offers 4 and 6-seater chairlifts and a new cable car right up to the fun in the snow. During the beautiful alpine summer, many hiking trails lead through the valley past tranquil meadows and the nearby mountain ranges with spectacular views. Golfplayers can enjoy two high class golf courses (9+18+18), which count to the best in Europe. Nature highlight: Tiefenberg Bog is one of the prettiest raised bogs in the Allgäu region. „Village delicacies“: Certified Allgäu specialties are served in the restaurants, hotels, and traditional cabins. From Allgäu mountain cheese and wholegrain bread, to herbal teas and ice cream made from milk produced in Ofterschwang. TIPS: • Frisbee-golf & downhill scooters • Stunning golf courses • Guided Alpine dairy and herb tours • Hörner Panorama Tour • Snowshoe park with husky days • Traditional & cultural events

Hiking & Nature Experience Why are the activities in the Hörnerdörfer region so much fun? It is all about being in the untouched beauty of the mountains, savouring its peace and tranquillity. From a nice and relaxed walk across the valley, to challenging high mountain tours – a true hiker’s paradise. The Hörnerdörfer region is part of the cross-border, 400 square kilometre Nagelfluhkette Nature Park. Here, a fabulous diversity of Alpine landscapes is found within a relatively small area: raised bogs, rolling, grassy hills dotted with wild flowers, as well as grasslands as far as the eye can see. Nature parks are invaluable habitats for endangered flora and fauna. There is no other Alpine region with more traditionally operated Alpine farms, offering regional delicacies to the weary traveller. TIPS: • Nature park adventure programme • Rare flora and fauna • Panoramic high-altitude trails • Diverse Alpine landscape • Cottage-style inns & regional delicacies • Cable car tickets offered for free by many hosts

Allgäu Hiking Trilogy

The Allgäu Hiking Trilogy in the Hörnerdörfer Region At One with Nature From hilly meadow landscapes and softly rolling grasslands to the high mountain peaks. The Allgäu Hiking Trilogy offers 870 kilometres and 51 stages of hiking adventures at three altitudes. The trail network connects the Allgäu natural adventure spaces and gives the hiker insight into special stories from the heart of the region. These stories come to life at select locations and with strong symbolism. These places are known as the ‘trilogy locations’. One of these locations is at Lake Auwald, near Fischen. The varied landscapes of the Allgäu region can be discovered via three different routes: trails for walkers, water rats, and peak conquerors. The Hiking Trilogy consists of nine ‘trilogy areas’, and each one has its own story to tell. The Hörnerdörfer villages lie within the ‘Alpine Gardens’ Adventure Area. The Alpine Gardens and the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park offer a unique variety of landscapes and endangered flora and fauna. Characteristic for the area is the Nagelfluh conglomerate, consisting of rock and gravel components which create unique rock formations.

Walker Route: 387 kilometres of rolling hills in the west, across the terraced landscape in the east, and all the way across Lower Allgäu. Water Rat Route: 377 kilometres, perfect for adventurous hikers who want to experience the trails along the water’s edge, the waterfalls in the west, and the lakes at the heart and towards the east of the Allgäu region. The stages are more ambitious, but not quite a mountain adventure. Peak Conqueror Route: 338 kilometres for more athletic hikers who seek challenges at the highest altitudes of the Allgäu region. The one-day stages are shorter, but not for the faint of heart in terms of altitude metres. Fischen is the starting location of this route, with Balderschwang as one of the stages. Selected circular trails with hospitality and information points bring to life the natural and local history, and the unique characteristics of the „Alpine Gardens“ adventure areas.

Hörnerbahn Bolsterlang Cable Cars The Hörnerbahn gondolas with their panoramic windows will carry you comfortably from an altitude of 940 metres right up to 1,540 metres above sea level. The green Iller Valley stretches from Sonthofen to Oberstdorf, and the higher you travel, the more breathtaking the view across the surrounding mountain vistas of the Allgäu Alps is. The famous high trails of the Hörner Mountain Range, starting right at the mountain station, await with beautiful mountain meadows, dotted with flowers of many species indigenous to the Allgäu Alps. From the „royal“ viewing peak Riedberger Horn, which puts to shame some of the most well-known panoramic peaks of the Allgäu region, you will be able to see as far as the glistening firn fields of the faraway Schesaplana and Säntis.

World Cup Express Ofterschwang Untouched nature ... Ofterschwang, because of its location along the edge of the Alps, is a perfect starting point for wonderful hikes and bike tours. On the World Cup Express, it only takes a few minutes to the top of Ofterschwanger Horn. Here, at 1,400 metres above sea level, active holiday enthusiasts will have just as much to look forward to as will those who are simply looking for some peace and relaxation. A wide coverage trail network offers high-octane mountain tours, but also paved paths for relaxed strolls. And all the while you can enjoy the stunning backdrop of the surrounding high Allgäu High Alps.

Cycling & eBiking 60 bike tours wind around the Hörnerdörfer region from the mountains to the valley, with beautiful stage stops: waterfalls, picturesque swimming lakes, peaceful Alpine valleys, authentic mountain cabins, the deepest cave in Allgäu, and the Alpine Wildlife Park near Obermaiselstein. The Alpine nature at three different altitudes is best appreciated from the saddle of a bicycle. There are thousands of discoveries to be made by the wayside! On even paths along the mountain river, on peaceful trails across green mountain meadows, and on challenging panoramic high-trails into the mountains. A new premium quality circular bike trail, the ‘Radrunde Allgäu’, similarly leads across the Hörnerdörfer region, right through the Alpine Gardens, which are the homes of our mountain farmers, mountain cheese, and pure Alpine beauty. TIPS: • eBike rental available for visitors to the Hörnerdörfer region (depending on availability) • Many types of bikes can be rented • Certified bike stations • Cycling shops with a great selection • Service and repair stations • Guided bike tours • ‘Radrunde Allgäu’ high quality bike trail

Get to know the local traditional dress complete with the “Edelweiss suspenders“ and listen to traditional yodelling and folk music. The “Alphorniade“ in May, the historical skiing event, or the ‘Kulturzeit’ event series with many interesting offerings attract many culturally aware visitors each year. TIPS: • Bonfires on the first Sunday after the carnival in late winter • Setup of the maypole on the 1st of May • Alphorniade in Balderschwang in May • Fischen ‘Kulturzeit’ event series from May to October • ‘Viehscheid’ cattle drives in September • Alpine folk music presentations • Traditional evenings with dance and music • Village and seasonal fairs • Mountain mass and fairs

Regional Delicacies & Allgäu Craftsmanship The Hörnerdörfer region is a great place for discovering the culinary side of Allgäu as well. Hotels and restaurants serve seasonal delicacies made with local produce. The traditional Alpine cottages and dairies sell high quality cheese and milk specialties which are made by local fresh milk. Fish and venison dishes, sausages and baked goods, as well as honey and herb delicacies are all part of the culinary experience. Traditional craftsmanship is another important aspect of the Hörnerdörfer region. In addition to the excellent mountain cheese delicacies, you will also find genuine Allgäu wooden clogs, cow belts, wrought iron pieces and traditional regional dresses made by hand. The Hörnerdörfer shopping experience is rounded off by beautiful Alpine gift ideas and well-stocked sports and leisure shops. TIPS: • Mountain cheese delicacies • Regional venison, fish and herb products • Traditional dress fashion and Allgäu craftsmanship • Well-stocked retail shops
