LGBTQ History Month Opening Reception Wednesday, September 29

11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Plaza Rooms Middle and West, Mack Student Center, North Campus Join us for student speaker and keynote speaker Malcolm Lazin, founder of the Equality Forum and National GLBT History Month and former assistant U.S. attorney. During the program students will have an opportunity to view the international LGBTQ icons for the month of October as well as enjoy light food and refreshments. Threading Love for Youth October 1-November 22

260 Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus Beginning in October, make a handmade scarf, beanie, gloves/mittens, and other winter accessories to benefit Love Threads. Love Threads is a national nonprofit organization aimed at increasing public awareness of homelessness among LGBTQ youth, through education, empowerment and social justice. In addition, write an anonymous inspirational note, quote, or tell your own story; a note can be long or short — it will be attached to the winter accessory. All items need to be dropped off by Monday, November 22, 2010. Yarn and crochet needles can be signed out in 260 Mack Student Center, North Campus. Voices of the Rainbow Monday-Friday, October 4-8

10 a.m.-3 p.m. Main Dining Room, Mack Student Center, North Campus Visit the Main Dining Room and add your words or drawings of support for the LGBTQ community. The pieces of the flag will be assembled and hung in the Main Dining Room for the remainder of the month. Midnight Movie: MILK Saturday, October 9

Student Center Theater, Mack Student Center, North Campus Come watch a midnight showing of Milk, nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture! Starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to be elected in California and the third to ever be elected in the United States, the film examines his entry into California politics and into the world of fighting for civil and political rights for the gay community of San Francisco. “Out” in the Workplace Event: A Program for the LGBTQ Community Thursday, October 14

Mack Hall, North Campus Please join The Career Center, Office of Multicultural & International Student Programs, The Pride Network and LGBT Studies Program for a panel discussion with employers and Hofstra alumni who will share their experiences about being gay in the workplace. Students are invited to ask questions of the panel members in this casual, safe environment. There will be time for networking. Movie: Gay Pioneers Tuesday, October 26

7-9 p.m. Student Center Theater, Mack Student Center, North Campus Gay Pioneers is the story of the first organized annual gay civil rights demonstrations held in Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C. from 1965 to 1969. When few would publicly identify themselves as gay, these brave pioneers challenged pervasive homophobia. Gay Pioneers is directed by PBS award-winning documentary filmmaker Glenn Holsten and produced by PBS affiliate WHYY and Equality Forum.
