A Banner Summer for the DeMatteis School

The start of the 2024-25 academic year has brought very welcome news to the DeMatteis School. We recently received official notification that all six of the programs we submitted to the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET were reaccredited I will defer to my two colleagues in the Department of Engineering and the Department of Computer Science to elaborate on the details, but I do want to take this opportunity to thank all the faculty, students and industry partners who participated in the exhaustive work leading up to, and culminating in, the visit last October. Their efforts resulted in this affirmation of the value of our programs.

Many factors contribute to our success, and one of them, which is certainly one of our signature annual activities, just wrapped up a few weeks back. On August 27th, we held our eighth annual Advanced Summer Program in Research (ASPiRe) symposium, at which approximately twenty student researchers presented the fruit of their school-sponsored research project findings to their peers and faculty mentors The quality of the talks was extraordinarily impressive, and covered the gamut of topics ranging from the design of a spherical antenna positioner to the remote sensing of algal blooms, and from the use of plant-derived tissues for vascular repair to the optimization of memory allocation in cloud virtual machines.Truly, this seemed much more like a graduate seminar highlighting master’s projects than an exclusively undergraduate program I am hoping that some snatches of these talks, and some of the interviews conducted in the aftermath of their presentations will be posted on our DeMatteis website soon so that you do not simply have to rely on my impressions.

I want to welcome two new full-time faculty members in the Department of Computer Science who have arrived on campus in time for the beginning of the semester: Dr. Zonghua Gu and Dr. Marco Romanelli Each brings valuable experience and a strong commitment to teaching to the department and I look forward to interacting with them throughout the years to come We are also awaiting the arrival of yet another full-time faculty member who has accepted an offer to join the department by the start of the spring semester, so this rapidly growing community of computer science students and faculty will soon be at full strength.

We are also working to build up our network of active alumni in the school As a long-time member of the faculty here, I have seen many students graduate over the years and often hear from them We now have over 4,000 alumni, and I and my colleagues are working diligently to reach out to as many of them as we can locate. We enjoy getting updates from alumni, so if you are one of the ones that haven’t been in touch recently please do so. This enewsletter contains a form that is convenient to fill out and return for inclusion in the next issue.
