Behailu (aka Alu) Mammo was born in Ethiopia, East Africa, and is a professor of mathematics at Hofstra University. He earned his BS and MS in Mathematics from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. In 2005, Dr. Mammo received a PhD in Mathematics from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and joined Hofstra University as a tenure-track assistant professor. In 2021, he was promoted to full professor.
Dr. Mammo has received multiple awards, including outstanding teaching by a graduate student; Stessin Prize for his paper published in the Journal of Number Theory; the ”2020 Teacher of the Year“ award from Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; and the 2023 Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America. His impact on teaching goes beyond his own classrooms. Starting from 2011, he has received more than $2 million from the National Science Foundation for the Hofstra Noyce Scholars Program, which recruits, prepares, and retains math and science education majors to become high-quality teachers, especially in high-need schools. Creating equitable learning opportunities for all students is the overarching goal of the program. So far, the program awarded scholarships to 49 Hofstra students, and most have already taught thousands of students in high-need schools. Dr. Mammo lives on Long Island with his wife and two sons.
Geoffrey Tarson is a seasoned television writer, having worked on the staffs of such shows as Suddenly Susan (NBC), That’s So Raven (Disney Channel), and Half & Half (UPN), as well as in pilot development for Disney Channel and Disney XD. He is a member of the Writers Guild of America, and has written over 20 produced television scripts. Prof. Tarson has also worked in TV animation as a story editor and writer for the animated series Groove High (Disney Europe).
He has been teaching in the Department of Radio, Television, Film at Hofstra since 2017, and is thrilled to have helped create the new BFA in Writing for the Screen major for students interested in writing for both TV and film. In 2021, Prof. Tarson was honored as the “Teacher of the Year” in the School of Communication.
For more than 30 years, he has been in the entertainment industry working professionally as an actor, director, improviser, and playwright. Prof. Tarson continues to write TV pilots in a variety of formats, and is currently working on a new web series. His goal as an instructor is to inspire Hofstra’s communications students to embrace storytelling, stay current, and find their own unique voice in today’s exciting and constantly changing TV landscape.
Michael Runkel has been an active member of the green industry on Long Island for the past 15 years. He has served as assistant director of grounds and the Hofstra Arboretum since November 2019. Prior to joining Hofstra, Mr. Runkel worked for the New York State Parks System as landscape curator at the Bayard Cutting Arboretum and assistant director/director of horticulture at the Planting Fields Arboretum. He graduated from Farmingdale State College (SUNY) in May 2012 with a Bachelor of Technology in Horticulture Technology Management with an emphasis in Landscape Development.
Hofstra University Museum of Art Exhibition
New Perspectives: The Museum of Art at 60
September 5-December 15, 2023
Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. • Saturday and Sunday, noon-4 p.m.
Emily Lowe Gallery, South Campus
In celebration of 60 years of transformation, growth, and service, the Hofstra Museum asked 10 individuals from the University and local communities to curate “mini” exhibitions. The guest curators reviewed the collection database, examined works in collection storage, and crafted their selections. Their entries express their individual points of view and perspectives. They vary greatly in style and content, depending upon their interests and focus.
This exhibition celebrates the great range and quality of pieces in the permanent collection of more than 5,200 works of art, dating from 1,500 BCE to the 21st century, and demonstrates the Museum’s continued commitment to excellence. While it features only a small portion of the resources represented in the expansive collection, the depth and breadth of the collection is exemplified by the pieces that have been selected. We hope the works of art highlighted here will convey a sense of the collection’s importance, particularly for object-based learning with students, faculty, and the public.
As we look to the future, the Museum will continue to initiate and facilitate rich and varied cultural and artistic explorations in an atmosphere that promotes an open exchange of ideas.
The Hofstra University Museum of Art’s programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.
