Wednesday, October 2 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Multipurpose Room East, Mack Student Center The LGBTQ Heritage Month Reception will feature keynote speaker Carmen Vazquez, a lifelong LGBTQ rights activist and current coordinator of the LGBT Health & Human Services Unit for the NYS AIDS Institute. Coming Out: A Support Workshop

Monday, October 7, 14, 21 6:30-8 p.m. Location is available only to registered participants A three-session, confidential, informational and social support group for students who wish to explore opening up about their sexual or gender identity. The workshop will take place in a safe environment where students can generate solutions and discuss barriers and common experiences. Refreshments will be provided. National Coming Out Jeans Day

Friday, October 11 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Atrium, Mack Student Center Please join the Office of Student Leadership and Activities in supporting the LGBTQ community by wearing jeans or a jean patch to collectively show our support. Jeans Day began at Rutgers University in 1974 as a way to promote equal rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning individuals. Since that time, Jeans Day has spread to other colleges and universities throughout the country. For those members of the Hofstra community dressed in professional attire please pick up a jean patch with a pin to show your support. Diversity, Dialogue, and Desserts Series: REAL Men and REAL Women Only Please Thursday, October 17 6:30-7:30 p.m., Plaza Room East, Mack Student Center Join us for an intimate discussion on how stereotyping and the secret sexism in the gay community hurt us all. We will discuss how the die-hard “traditional” expectation that men conform to masculine gender norms and women conform to feminine gender norms hurts the LGBTQ community as a whole by turning us against each other and even turning us against ourselves. Tuesday-Friday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Emily Lowe Gallery, Emily Lowe Hall This exhibition of photographic portraiture by Arnold Newman highlights the innovative minds and personalities that gave rise to the ideas and concepts that shaped the 20th century. Recognized as the “Father of Environmental Portraiture,” where the background is an integral part of the image, Newman was influenced by the school of modernism. His work has contributed to the transformation of what we know as the photographic portrait; his work is found in numerous international museums and collections.
