Find Your Edge

College is about more than preparing for a specific career. It’s about discovering what excites and motivates you … about seeing what the future has to offer and discovering what you bring to the table. Your unique combination of personal talents and traits that will help you leverage what you learn to get where you want to be. Your edge. For 75 years, Hofstra University has sharpened the minds of students in pursuit of their dreams — even those they didn’t know they had. Since our founding in 1935, we have become a nationally and internationally recognized educational institution, and one of only four universities in New York state with schools of law, business and, beginning in 2011, medicine. Our inspiring professors, 91 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields, offer a broad and challenging curriculum to help you expand your horizons. And the Hofstra campus is not just another pretty place. We’re an officially designated arboretum and a member of the American Public Gardens Association. We’ve blended natural beauty, sculpture, architecture and state-of-the-art technology to create an ideal environment for learning. Hundreds of experiences await you in sports, the arts, and a huge array of organizations and events. Best of all, Hofstra’s secure suburban enclave is only a short train ride from everything New York City has to offer — including unmatched internship and job opportunities.

Simply put, there’s no better place than Hofstra University to find your edge — and jump-start your future!

And throughout our campus, students in the arts, sciences, humanities, business, and other programs are discovering and developing their potential. As a safe, energized and active suburban campus with strong ties and easy access to everything New York City has to offer, Hofstra has become increasingly attractive to career-oriented students. “Hofstra helped me prepare for the workforce by giving me some fundamental tools in the classroom that I also managed to apply to my everyday campus life, such as being the Student Government Association (SGA) president and being part of a cabinet overseeing 170 clubs and organizations.” Sean Hutchinson, Class of 2010 Major: Marketing Home Country: Jamaica, Greater Antilles

“One of the things I like best about Hofstra is the teachers. They’re willing to work with you outside the classroom. One of my teachers, Professor [Joel] Evans, told us to come see him not only if we had questions about class but also if we had any questions about Hofstra or about life. It’s great when you have teachers who really love what they do.” Adera Douglas-Freeman, Class of 2012 Major: Marketing Hometown: Albrightsville, Pennsylvania

Edwin Raagas, Class of 2010 Major: Marketing Hometown: Elmwood Park, New Jersey “Make sure that what you’re doing today affects what you’re doing tomorrow, because at the end of the day it’s your life, and you want to have something to show. What I enjoy most about marketing is that it’s not just about numbers or selling something — it’s about the connections you make with people. Why do they want to buy this product? Why do they want to support this company? It’s your job as a marketer to connect the product with the people who consume it.” 6 hofstra.edu 6 hofstra.edu

“As the academic director of the Zarb School’s Martin B. I am excited to teach in the trading room, and our students are extremely motivated to take courses in this unique learning facility. The skills they learn in the trading room make them even more marketable in the ever-changing world of finance.”

The opportunities to do assignments, make mistakes, learn from them and have someone available to answer questions are learning techniques that would not have been available to me in Brazil.”

Associate Professor and Chair, Speech Communication, Rhetoric and Performance Studies

“I love teaching at Hofstra because the students are smart and very spirited. They’re not afraid to take risks, intellectually or personally, and that means I can take risks too. I can be very creative in the way I teach, which is really liberating and a lot of fun.”

I would like to focus on international relations, working to formulate foreign policies for elected officials, ideally at the U.S. Department of State.”

“I came to college to learn — so I chose global studies because it interests me; photography and dance, the same. Hofstra’s Honors College takes advantage of its relatively close proximity to New York City, and it’s given me access to museums, shows, and countless cultural and dance opportunities that an honors college elsewhere might not be able to offer. That, plus the international study opportunities I’ve taken, has let me accrue a lot of life experience in a short amount of time, so I do not worry over being able to find a position that I am passionate about when I am ready.”

Warren Frisina, Ph.D. Associated Professor of Religion and Dean, Hofstra University Honors College

“It’s about the conversation. Honors College is an invitation into a conversation that reaches back to the beginnings of human history and extends to the very specific questions, problems, hopes, and dreams students bring to our classrooms and offices.”

Meet Your Mentors The interchange between teacher and student sparks all learning. Hofstra University’s more than 500 full-time faculty members are noted scholars, writers, scientists, artists and professionals — but above all, they are inspiring teachers. Among them you will find National Endowment for the Humanities Fellows, Guggenheim Fellows, an Emmy Award winner, major grant recipients and dozens of respected textbook authors. Our professors, more than 91 percent of whom hold the highest degree in their fields, are acknowledged leaders in a wide variety of arenas, but they share a passion for passing on what they have learned and being the agent of your enlightenment. And we make certain you have every opportunity to establish life-changing, sometimes lifelong relationships with these extraordinary men and women. In fact, one thing that distinguishes Hofstra from so many other colleges is that virtually all of our faculty teach undergraduates, and many of our most eminent faculty make it a point to teach our newest students. What’s more, at Hofstra all classes are led by faculty members, not teaching assistants. With small average class sizes (48% of our classes have fewer than 20 students), you’ll be in an environment that encourages a free exchange of ideas. You won’t find our professors only in their classrooms, either. They take pride in being accessible, during and after office hours. They welcome your questions, and can offer not only the academic knowledge of an expert but also the life experiences of one who has labored in the field you wish to explore. They will work with you, inspire you, and teach you to stay hungry for knowledge and constantly quest for self-improvement. At Hofstra, that’s what we call teaching — and a great way to find your edge.

We want our new students to feel comfortable with New York City right away. So, each fall term, we offer faculty-organized, course-related trips. For example, this fall the “Politics and History” cluster traveled to Ellis Island, the geology seminar climbed over rocks in Central Park, the business cluster visited Bloomberg Media, the engineering cluster traveled to Underwriters Laboratory, a seminar studying the problem of child labor worldwide visited UNICEF and Human Rights Watch, the pre-med cluster explored the wonder of the human form at Bodies: The Exhibition, and the labor studies seminar enjoyed a walking tour of Chinatown. We want our students to think of New York City as one of our classrooms — albeit a rather large and unruly one. These trips are one way to introduce you to all the city has to offer. hofstra.edu 11

Meet Your Peers

Jordan Gee

Jill Reinholt

Class of 2011

Class of 2011 (Hofstra University Honors College)

Major: Television Production Activity: Hofstra Association for Black Journalists Hometown: Medford, New York

Major: Marketing Activity: Hofstra Marketing Association Hometown: Red Lion, Pennsylvania

When Jordan Gee arrived at Hofstra, he expected it to be a great next step toward a career in television production. What he didn’t expect was a world of new friends and a positive, collaborative educational atmosphere.

Jill Reinholt chose Hofstra University for its close proximity to New York City and because of the feeling she got when she first stepped foot on campus. “I did some surveys online, and Hofstra kept showing up, so I visited – and I loved it. It was by far the most welcoming university.”

Before coming to Hofstra, Jordan had already turned a successful internship into a part-time job at MSG Network, and working as a production assistant on telecasts of New York Islanders hockey games keeps him busy during the long hockey season. But that hasn’t kept him from plugging into the Hofstra scene. “At Welcome Week, the students and staff really went out of their way to make sure everyone felt like part of the community. And that’s the way it’s been in all my classes. The faculty, the students … everybody wants to help each other however they can.”

For more of Jordan’s story, visit hofstra.edu/JordanG. 12 hofstra.edu

In Jill’s opinion, Hofstra has lived up to its early promise. As a first-year Honors College student enrolled in Culture & Expression, she had the chance to get to know a small group of students and teachers intimately as they explored the connections among disciplines. “The friends I’ve met, the administrators … everyone has just been great.” But Jill reserves special praise for her teachers. “I’ve been amazed by the professors here. I came in with the expectation that they would be more interested in their research. … that students wouldn’t be their no. 1 priority. But that hasn’t been the case. They’re right there with us, and they’re willing to help.”

For more of Jill’s story, visit hofstra.edu/JillR.

One of the most exciting things about college is the opportunity to meet new people … to challenge yourself with new perspectives. You won’t find a suburban campus with a much more eclectic, diverse, international student body than Hofstra University. Our students come from 47 U.S. states and territories, and 71 countries, each bringing their unique ideas and cultural heritages. And, like you, they are eager to expand their horizons and make new friends. Here are just a few of the faces you might meet.

Andrew Schuetz

Kinni Akpabot

Class of 2011

Class of 2013

Major: Entrepreneurship Activity: Spirit Support Hometown: Kennewick, Washington

Major: Biochemistry Activity: Resident Assistant Hometown: Akwa Ibom, Nigeria

Andrew Schuetz knew in the sixth grade that he wanted to own his own business. When he found out that there was such a thing as an entrepreneurship major, he thought, “Wow … this is perfect!” For Andrew, deciding on a school meant choosing among the relatively few colleges and universities that offered an entrepreneurship major. “I sat in on a class at my top three choices,” he said, “and my classroom experience at Hofstra [in Dr. Hayes’ entrepreneurship class] just blew me away. There were only about 20 students in the class, and it seemed like the professor knew the students on a personal level. It was just what I wanted.”

Going to college in America wasn’t part of Kinni Akpabot’s original plans, but circumstances in her homeland and learning about Hofstra’s plan to start a medical school clinched her choice of colleges. “After I took the SATs, I received information about Hofstra by e-mail,” said Kinni, who dreams of working for the United Nations’ World Health Organization. “I’ve wanted to become a doctor for a long time, and when I read that Hofstra was opening a medical school, I decided it was the right place to start studying.”

Andrew’s first three years at Hofstra have been, in a word, “fantastic.” “There are so many opportunities here,” he said. “There are 170 clubs on campus, and then there’s the city. It’s been a great experience.”

Kinni’s first year was a whirlwind of activities, including singing in the Hofstra Gospel Ensemble, participating in the Model United Nations program, serving as secretary of both the Residence Hall Council and the Pre-med Club, and volunteering at nearby Winthrop-University Hospital.

As a first-year student, Andrew enrolled in a First-Year Connections cluster that included economics and math courses. “The cluster was amazing,” he said, “and it was a nice way to meet other students with a common interest in business.”

“There are so many things available to us on campus … so many opportunities. The best equipment in my chemistry classes, a wonderful fitness center, and especially really helpful advisers who want to help you succeed.”

Enhance Your Experience At Hofstra, an education isn’t just something you get — it’s something you experience. Because college is more than professors, classes and course work. It’s about taking chances, opening your mind to new possibilities and exploring your options. It’s about being actively engaged in the world around you, and learning more about yourself. And, let’s be honest … it’s a time to have a little fun, too.

In Good Company

“During my student orientation, I remember having a conversation with a senior who was in the process of successfully starting his own business. I remember thinking how far off starting my own business seemed for me, but this aspiring entrepreneur took the time to encourage my own path. Little did I know that two years later, I would BE that guy and have that exact conversation with an incoming freshman.”

your questions ... Q. What sets Hofstra University apart? A. A distinguished faculty, a stunning, dynamic suburban campus is less than an hour away from New York City, breakthrough academic and cultural programs, state-of-the-art facilities … these are just a few of the factors that bring students to Hofstra University.

Q. Why is Hofstra an “arboretum?” A. Hofstra’s lush, 240-acre campus is one of 500 institutions nationwide that has been designated an arboretum by the American Public Gardens Association. With more than 12,000 trees, as well as ornamental bushes, flowers (especially tulips!) and more than 60 outdoor sculptures, our campus offers students a beautiful, inspiring atmosphere in which to live and learn.

Q. What can I do outside the classroom at Hofstra? A. Hofstra’s campus is always buzzing. With more than 500 on-campus cultural events each year, a competitive NCAA Division I athletic program, and more than 170 student clubs and organizations, you might have trouble deciding what to do first!

Q. What if I like smaller classes, where the professors actually know me by name? A. Then Hofstra is a perfect choice for you. We keep our class sizes small, averaging just 22 students, and with a student-to-faculty ratio of 14-to-1, we make sure our students get the personal attention they need to succeed.

Q. What can I do in New York City? A. What can’t you do in the Big Apple? Thousands of restaurants. Hundreds of museums and galleries. Dozens of sporting venues and events. See a Broadway show, a rock concert or a poetry jam. Visit the Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, Ellis Island, or any one of the scores of sites that make New York City the greatest city in the world. And, just as important, when you’re ready for employment or an internship, you’ll find open doors at some of the world’s largest and most prestigious companies, and in just about every industry.

Q. I want to explore New York City, but I don’t have a car … what do I do? A. Do what thousands of Long Islanders do every day — take the Long Island Rail Road! The Hempstead and Mineola stations are easily accesible by car, bus or Hofstra’s own shuttle, and trains run day and night. You’ll be in downtown Manhattan (and the hub of the largest subway and bus system in the United States) in just 45 minutes!

Q. If I do have a car, can I keep it on campus? A. Certainly. Unlike many colleges and universities, Hofstra lets all students park on campus. You just need a registration sticker (which is free for students).

answered Q. When it’s time to look for a job, will Hofstra help? A. Absolutely. Hofstra’s Career Center will help you prepare for a career from your first day on campus and will continue to offer career guidance long after you’ve graduated. Of course, you can also turn to Hofstra’s extensive alumni network.

Q. How about living and dining on campus? A. Hofstra has a wide variety of residence halls and living options, from our high-rises to two-story residence clusters, including two halls reserved for first-year students and another for Hofstra University Honors College students. And for our first-year students, we do our best to match roommates with compatible personality traits and habits. You can also find your roommate on Facebook. As for dining choices, Hofstra features 21 on-campus eateries where you’ll find fare ranging from Asian to vegan and everything in between.

Q. Is Hofstra safe? A. At Hofstra, we are committed to the safety of our students. Campus safety measures include high-tech security in all residence halls, well-lit paths and conveniently located security phones, and a professional staff of more than 65 full-time Public Safety officers supplemented by hundreds of student safety employees. In addition, the University has implemented an effective emergency response plan to enhance our crisis response and communication capabilities. An overview of this plan is available at hofstra.edu/publicsafety.

Q. How hard is it to get into Hofstra? A. In the past two years, slightly more than half of all applicants were admitted, so we’re very competitive. The average SAT score for students admitted in fall 2010 was 1171 (not including the writing portion of the SAT). However, we consider a candidate’s entire record in addition to grades and test scores.

Q. What if I ever need help, guidance or support at Hofstra? A. We have excellent first-year programs to help you adjust to both the academic and social life of the University. Every first-year student at Hofstra has a dedicated advisement dean (if you have declared your major) in addition to access to tutors and many other support services. The Office of Student Leadership and Activities staff, as well as counselors at Hofstra’s Saltzman Community Services Center, are also available to students. We’re with you every step of the way.
