Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, European Studies Program, Women’s Studies Program, and Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice are pleased to present a two-part event given by
María Reimóndez Galician writer, translator and interpreter, and activist
“Feminist Translation and Interpretation as a Tool for Decolonial Action” Wednesday, February 26, 2020 2:55-4:20 p.m.
Guthart Cultural Center Theater, Axinn Library, First Floor, South Campus While many aspects of social change are discussed in the framework of feminist and decolonial action, language is usually not one of them, and yet, there is no epistemological change without considering language hegemony. What theories do we have access to? How is the transnational constructed as a monolingual, Englishonly space in feminist and decolonial work? What effects does that have in communities and on women around the world? And, of course, how can we change this? This presentation addresses feminist translation and interpretation as a tool within this framework, including some practical examples of translation work across nonhegemonic languages such as Galician and Tamil.

Room 102 Roosevelt Hall, South Campus After considering the theoretical implications of language hegemony, in this session we experience how feminist and decolonial translation works in practice. Participants have a chance to work with texts and experiment with their translation skills from a political perspective.
