Welcome to Hofstra University! Hofstra is thrilled to welcome the Class of 2014 and celebrate its 75th anniversary this year. We’ve designed an exciting program for all of our new students to become fully acclimated with the campus and all its resources. From interactive trips to New York City and engaging programming to learning about the more than 140 student clubs and organizations, Hofstra has something for everyone! Along the way, your Welcome Week coordinators and leaders, resident assistants, and Orientation leaders will be here to guide you. They can’t wait to meet you after the President’s Welcome! Be sure to carry this guide and your HofstraCard (student ID card) with you throughout the week. Your HofstraCard is used for identification, entry into your residence hall, food purchases, and point accumulation to be entered to win one of two FREE iPads! Who could say no to that?

ABOUT OUR STAFF Meet your three Welcome Week Coordinators (WWCs)! They’ve had a blast preparing this week especially for you, so make sure you find them throughout the week and introduce yourself! ANDREYA SHAAK, CLASS OF 2012 — WELCOME WEEK LEADERS Originally from Pennsylvania, Andreya Shaak is a junior broadcast journalism major and an English and Spanish minor. As a sister of Alpha Phi sorority and a station member of WRHU-FM Radio Hofstra University, Andreya loves to get involved with different clubs and organizations on campus. Last semester, she was a teacher’s assistant for writing studies and composition as well as a Spanish and communications left to right: Andreya Shaak, Kaitlin Frisch, Gennifer Delman tutor. This semester, Andreya will be a communications intern for the Early Years Institute, an organization based on Long Island. When she’s not busy around campus, you can find Andreya running in Eisenhower Park, re-reading the Harry Potter series, or cheering on her favorite football team, the Dallas Cowboys.

KAITLIN FRISCH, CLASS OF 2013 — PROGRAMMING Originally from California, Kaitlin traded in her flip-flops and surfboard for a pair of snowshoes and a sled when she headed to the East Coast last year for her first year. As an incoming sophomore, Kaitlin is gearing up for her B.F.A. audition in the Drama and Dance Department, Danceworks meetings, rehearsals for Cabaret, and pursuing a double major in creative writing. She is a firm believer that there is nothing a good Disney song can’t cure; in truth, she’s just a child at heart.

GENNIFER DELMAN, CLASS OF 2012 — PUBLICATIONS, TECHNOLOGY, AND BUSINESS Gennifer Delman is a junior journalism major with a minor in graphic arts. Born and raised in Rhode Island, Gennifer is thrilled to show her Hofstra Pride as a Welcome Week coordinator. On campus, she is the secretary of the magazine networking club Ed2010, and serves as a team leader for resident safety. She has interned for Hearst Magazines Digital Media, contributes regularly to seventeen.com/cosmogirl, and will be interning for O, The Oprah Magazine this fall. Gennifer’s favorite things about Hofstra include the School of Communication, the vibrant campus, proximity to the city, and amazing student body. 2

WELCOME WEEK VIRTUAL FOLDER Whether it’s tips on how to stay healthy during the school year, opportunities for campus involvement, or what to do in the city on the weekends, we’ve compiled everything you need to know about Hofstra University’s many offices and resources online. With the Virtual Welcome Week Folder, you can explore Hofstra’s cocurricular, academic, career, and social offerings at your leisure, on your computer. Don’t have a computer? Head over to Hammer Lab, located across from the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus. Additionally, the Virtual Folder is a part of Hofstra’s “Blue and Gold Make Green” environmental initiative, as it reduces the amount of paper distributed during Welcome Week. Instead of providing approximately 1,500 new students with close to 30 pages of materials, all information is available on the Hofstra Web site.

STOP & SWIPE: WIN A FREE IPAD! Wish you could read the latest issue of your favorite magazine or view your favorite television show on an Apple iPad? Hofstra is giving away two iPads during Welcome Week and YOU could win one. Look for events that have a

symbol,

and make sure you attend. The more times you swipe your HofstraCard, the more points you accumulate, and the better your chances of winning are. All interested students must be present at Monday’s Club Carnival to receive the prize. Winners will be announced between 2 and 3 p.m., and they must claim their prize within 15 minutes. Good luck!

EXPLORE NEXT DOOR (END) TRIP REGISTRATION Registration begins on Thursday, August 26 at 12:30 p.m., and ends on Friday, August 27 at 3 p.m. Explore everything New York City has to offer! Transportation and tickets to these events are FREE and are on a first-come, first served basis. Log in to the Hofstra portal (my.hofstra.edu) to register for the trip of your choice. If you don’t have a personal computer, utilize Hammer Lab, located across from the Joan and Donald E. Axinn Library, South Campus. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to you after you complete registration. Students can sign up for a service trip and another END trip; otherwise, only one trip is allowed per student. During Summer Orientation, the Class of 2014 showcased their talents, ranging from beat-boxing to singing. Tonight, those top performers will compete against one another for a spot in the final round during Diamond Weekend, ThursdaySunday, September 23-26. Cheer on your friends and show your Hofstra Pride!

2-4 p.m. Hofstra Scavenger Hunt Meet at TD Bank Sondra and David S. Mack Student Center, North Campus Break into pairs and dash around campus to demonstrate your Hofstra knowledge. Both members of the winning team will win a FREE blue or yellow iPod nano!
