TRILINGUAL POETRY READING MAPUDUNGUN, SPANISH, AND ENGLISH Featuring Mapuche Chilean Poet Elicura Chihuailaf and Dominican Poet José Mármol Elicura Chihuailaf is a Mapuche Chilean poet and author who writes in Mapudungun and Spanish. He is also a translator of works by poets such as Pablo Neruda into Mapudungun. In his book Confidential message to Chileans (Recado confidencial a los chilenos, 1999) he recalls memories of his childhood around the bonfire, where he learned the art of conversation (nvtramin in Mapudungun) and the advice of the elderly (orgulam). His poetry represents a deeply felt defense of Mother Nature, considered by the Mapuche community to be under threat by the dominant culture. José Mármol is an author from the Dominican Republic who has written 13 books of poetry and eight books of essays. He is considered one of the most important Dominican poets of his generation and the founder of a style called poetry of thought (or poesía del pensar). Honors include the Salomé Ureña National Prize for Poetry, the Premio Casa de Teatro, the Premio de Poesía Pedro Henríquez Ureña, and the Premio Nacional de Poesía. He was also a 1994 finalist for the Premio Internacional Eliseo Diego.
