THE CENTER FOR “RACE,” CULTURE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
COLLOQUIA SERIES A Conversation With TYLER THIER “Luciferians: Deconstructing Hate Speech and ‘Legitimized’ Prejudice in Writing & Rhetoric” In a peculiar patent filed by Keith Raniere, founder of the NXIVM sex-trafficking cult, one can find a collection of figures outlining a physiological method for rehabilitating a “Luciferian.” This was one of Raniere’s manipulative practices for demonizing those who either showed signs of resistance to his harmful ideology or parted ways with it altogether. During this workshop, we will use the “Luciferian” label as a lens to conduct case studies of similar factions (including designated hate groups) that unjustly target or make an enemy of an entire demographic group behind the false merit of professional rhetoric and nobly framed mission statements. We will tap into resources such as the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Extremist Files and various rhetorical analysis strategies in approaching these often “institutionally veiled” or otherwise “masked” communicative devices. The objective is to develop investigative, critical-thinking tools for identifying microaggressive writing within academic contexts and beyond. Tyler Thier is an adjunct professor in the Department of Writing Studies and Rhetoric. He is a published poet, performed playwright, and freelance film critic interested primarily in the experimental and revolutionary arts.
