We believe that art is a necessary luxury. Sounds like an oxymoron? Not if you ask one of our many collectors that have experienced the joy and pride of ownership of a meaningful work of art. While very few of us will ever live with a multimillion dollar original by one of the great masters, we believe that one can experience the same satisfaction by owning a work of art by one of our more accessible artists. What was previously the prerogative of the few, now almost anyone can enjoy art at a level that is comfortable, yet compelling. For more than three decades our family has sorted through the seemingly vast chaos of what is called the art market. We have simple but very discerning criteria for choosing the artists and works we present to you. When originality, quality and consistency come together, we have met our goal. We pride ourselves that our art is taken seriously by seasoned collectors and critics but at the same time can be enjoyed by anyone. We believe that art cannot be sold. You have to fall in love with it and all we can do is to offer you a great variety to choose from and thereby making the journey of collecting art a life enriching experience. With this catalogue we want give you a glimpse into the vast inventory of more than 1500 works we have collected over many years. We feature original fine prints by some of the greatest masters of the 20th century as well as works from up-and-coming artists that have just entered the professional arena. What you can count on is that every work is of quality and that we have done the due diligence to ensure provenance and authenticity.

GALLERY HISTORY Christian Hohmann | Fine Art represents over thirty years of lineage in the art world by the Hart/Hohmann family founded in Germany.

Christian Hohmann’s parents Werner and Ursula opened their first gallery in 1976 in the cultural tourist destination of Walsrode (Germany), which quickly became a success attracting cosmopolitan visitors from all over the world. In 1998, his aunt Eva Hart expanded the venture to the United States and opened a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, a premiere address for the California fine art world. She introduced art collectors to the best European contemporary artists, a relatively untapped market in the area, and one in which was found a thriving market. Only two years later the Hart family opened another location in the heart of Chicago. Back in Germany, 19-year old Christian was honing his own career by studying Art History and Economy at the University of Trier. He also spent time working with acclaimed artist Prof. Rudolf Hausner, an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, to publish several important Fine Art Prints. Two years later he opened his first gallery in Hamburg at 21. In 1998 he partnered up with Thomas Levy, one of Germany’s premier art dealers and gallery owners, to open a gallery villa in Hamburg-Poeseldorf. The gallery highlighted artists such as Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, and Xenia Hausner and participated in art expos including Art Frankfurt and the prestigious Hamburg Photo Triennale. Three years later, Hohmann collaborated on a project gallery in Berlin-Mitte. In 2002 Eva Hart decided to open a 5,000 square foot flagship gallery in Palm Desert, CA. Located on the exclusive El Paseo Drive in the renowned playground for the Forbes 400, the gallery played host to visitors from all over the world looking for paradise weather, perfect golf and tennis and world-class art. Christian joined his aunt as gallery director and went on to facilitate stellar exhibitions from modern classics like Picasso, Miró, Chagall, Paul Wunderlich and Gabriele Muenter to contemporary artists such as Willi Kissmer, Eberhard Hueckstaedt and Karin Voelker.

In the summer of 2009, the Harts retired and Christian decided to carry on the family tradition solo with a new signature space, also located on El Paseo Drive. Today, Christian Hohmann Fine Art reflects this rich legacy in the art world, which began in Germany over 30 years ago, and now spans across the United States. With a long-standing tradition of presenting both European and national artists of the highest caliber to the discerning collector, the gallery’s strong figurative program is accentuated by diverse offerings in 20th century master works by both familiar and emerging names. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, draftsman and sculptor who lived most of his life in France. He is widely known for cofounding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles that he helped develop and explore. Picasso demonstrated extraordinary artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence. During the first decade of the 20th century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas. His revolutionary artistic accomplishments brought him universal renown and immense fortune, making him one of the best-known figures in 20th century art.

Both “Buste de Femme” pieces are very rare proofs from the artist’s small portrait of Dora Maar, which was used in 1940 as the frontispiece for the edition de luxe of the Anthologie de l’humour noir by author Andre Breton. From a simple line etching of the subject, Picasso went on to retouch the aquatint layer by layer taking it through ten states. State 1 and IX from the edition of 15 are represented here. State 1 shows the cubist elementary forms of the great artist and typical warped placement of the nose in ratio to rest of the face. In State IX we see the work’s evolution through the exquisite detailing on the clothing and dark to light textures in the hair.

Picasso was known to oftentimes depict pictures of women in triads amidst various settings such as fountains, gallivanting gaily within his fixed gaze. “Trois Femmes” is a fine example of this. The etching, signed in pencil on the lower right and numbered on the lower left, is the 35th in an edition of 50 + circa 15 artist proofs that was published in 1961. An earlier edition of 55, which remained unsigned, was printed in 1942. Again, one can see the working within the etching of signature moments such as the darkening near the women’s heads crowned with wreaths and made important by this emphasis. Details in the face that distinguish the women can be seen in the eyes and gradients of color in the hair. The arms of the women entwine with each other making them appear to be friends engaged in social revelry and joy.

gold, and in this form impregnated Danae. The result of this union of human and divine was the great Greek hero Perseus.

The 1962 linocut “Danae” shows us the evolution of the artist’s career into this technique. It is an extremely rare work being one of only two recorded impressions of this state and it is signed, titled and inscribed by the printer “Danae-1962”.

The myth of Danae has interested artists through the ages, including Titian, Correggio, Rembrandt, and Klimt. A joke of presumably similar vintage about the moral of this story, unfortunately told at the expense of the fairer gender, is that a sure-fire way to get to a woman is through gold.

In Greek mythology, Danae was the daughter of Acrisius, the king of Argos. An oracle had foretold that Danae’s future son would slay his grandfather. In order to prevent this event from taking place, King Acrisius locked his daughter in an inaccessible tower, thereby removing her from contact with any potential suitors. Or so he thought. The god Zeus, who always had an eye for female charms, was struck by Danae’s beauty and desired her. Zeus, who unlike mere mortals possessed the powers of transmogrification, therefore transformed himself into a shower of

The piece is flawless in the printed area, with a very fine creamy white printed over black, which yields a pleasant light blue color with a tinge of gray. The rich blue hue is not conveyed in the image reproduction in Baer, which makes this a precious piece.

“Femme Nue Cueillent Des Fleurs,” a linoleum printed in four colors of the following order: caramel, chocolate, dark brown and black, is signed “Picasso” in pencil in the lower right.

The linocut “Vallauris” is a masterful example of Picasso’s minimalist line and was created on the occasion of the 1960 Exposition in France. Printed in colors and signed in pencil on the lower right, it is a flawless impression.

The piece stems from a time in which Picasso was drawn to reflect upon the works of Manet and other artists of the times. In this piece we see his reconstructed rendering of a woman bather from Manet’s “Le Déjeuner Sur L’Herbe” taken onto Picasso’s slate, and depicted picking flowers. She is seen in gargantuan size and has appeared in other works of the artist as well.

Stripped to its bare essence, the elimination of just one more design element would render this bird unrecognizable. Its “owlishness” somehow enters the subconscious without an acute explanation or awareness of what exactly it is that convincingly makes it an owl. Yet Picasso’s genius was that he understood this cognitive process on a conscious level and was, at will, able to bring just enough detail to his design to conjure the desired image in our mind. This style of art could be called “Reductionism”, one of the hundreds of unique styles, which Picasso invented. Picasso kept many animals, one of which was a wounded owl that he found and nursed back to health. It served as the inspiration for several prints, as well as a number of beautiful paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

MARC CHAGALL

* 1887 Belorussia - † 1985 France Marc Chagall was born Moishe Zakharovich Shagal on July 7, 1887 in Vitebsk, Belorussia. After studying art in Vitebsk and St. Petersburg he became frustrated with the traditional inclinations of his training. In 1910 he moved to Paris where he found home in the famous “La Ruche” (Beehive) area in the Vaugirard district. It was here where he met the painters Chaim Soutine, Fernand Leger, and Robert Delaunay as well as the real foundation for his artistic development. Chagall’s exposure to Cubism resulted in his attempts to incorporate the Cubist multiple points of view and geometric shapes into his compositions at that time. Two years later, Chagall contributed to the Salon des Independants and Salon d’ Automne as well as to Larionov’s Donkey’s Tail exhibition in Moscow. In 1914 he had his first one-man show at the Galerie “Der Sturm” in Berlin, Germany. In the mid 1920s, he produced illustrations to La Fontaine’s Fables. This marked his first step into the world of Fine Prints. Over the course of the next sixty years and through two marriages, both of which influenced his work, Chagall spent time living in both Russia and France, with a stint in the United States. During this time he continued to create, teach art and take on major-scale projects like the decoration of the ceiling of the Paris Opera (1964), and the murals for the Metropolitan Opera in New York (1965). He also explored the technique of stained glass, designing windows for the Cathedral in Metz (1959-62) and others. In the West, Chagall had countless exhibitions and retrospectives.

In Russia, after many years of silence and disregard for the artist, an exhibition of Chagall’s works from private collections was organized in Novgorod in 1968 and five years later Chagall was invited to visit Moscow in connection with a small retrospective of his work. Finally, on the centenary of the artist’s birth, a large exhibition opened at Pushkin Museum in Moscow and a Chagall Museum was opened in Vitebsk.

of his life, he went on to create over 1,000 original lithographs created by painting directly on the stone, producing a renowned original body of work. Most of Chagall’s inspirations were found in his memories of life in Vitebsk and its Jewish community. We also see homage to the Scriptures, folklore and Russian folk art and icon painting. “Rebecca at the Well” shows us an example of a poetic rendition of a simple biblical scene.

It was when the artist was in his fifties, that he found his true artistic voice as a lithographer. Throughout the end

The piece “Dryas Discovers Chloe” represents the famous Greek tale of two foundling children discovered and raised by shepherds who experience the full cycle of true love. Told in the brilliant blue, aqua and green colors of the artist’s most coveted palette, the piece is the third of a series of 42 lithographs depicting this classic story. It

is also one of the more rare pieces from this grouping as it stems from the small edition of 60 exemplars that bear Chagall’s signature on a wide margin. The larger edition of 200 of these precious lithographs remained unsigned while only the frontispiece of the portfolio containing all 42 lithographs was signed.

The extremely rare and original color lithograph “Quai de Bercy” was first published in 1954 in the art magazine “Derrière Le Miroir” dedicated to Chagall’s vision of Paris. The edition size this issue was 2500 copies that remained unsigned. There were 75 signed and numbered impressions on quality lithograph paper. This is one of the few remaining pieces from this series signed in pencil on the bottom right and inscribed “épreuve d’artist”, french for artist proof, which means that this particular impression came from Chagall’s personal collection. It is unblemished by a centerfold like the magazine bound exemplars and in exquisite condition, saturated with lush color.

In “The Meal” we see Chagall’s nostalgic fondness for the people in his life like his first wife Bella, his parents and other icons such as a clock and his beloved animals. Harkening back to sweet childhood memories, it is also anointed with his signature rooster that adorns many of the paintings that were most personal to the artist. This is also evident in the piece “Roosters on the Roof.” These two etchings are valuable because Chagall did so few etchings in his life compared to the over a thousand lithographs that he produced. Chagall’s artistic visions are often considered visual poetry, representing the dance of color and shape within the narrative context of story and memory. He populated his pictures with angels, lovers, flying cows, fiddlers, circus performers, and roosters, creating lyrical poems, which proclaimed the beauty of all creation, as well as his unwavering belief in the existence of miracles and in the infinite wisdom of the Creator. 10. | “The Meal” Etching | Edition of 50 | signed and numbered 12” x 9.25” on paper 20.5” x 15” | 1981

JOAN MIRÓ

* 1893 Spain - † 1983 Spain Joan Miró i Ferrà was a Catalan (Spanish) painter, sculptor and ceramicist born in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Earning international acclaim, his work has been interpreted as Surrealism, a sandbox for the subconscious mind, a re-creation of the childlike, and a manifestation of Catalan pride. In numerous interviews dating from the 1930s onward, Miró expressed contempt for conventional painting methods and famously declared an “assassination of painting” in favor of upsetting the visual elements of established painting. Born to the family of a goldsmith and watchmaker, the young Miró was drawn towards the arts community that was gathering in Montparnasse and in 1920 moved to Paris. There, under the influence of the poets and writers, he developed his unique style: organic forms and flattened picture planes drawn with a sharp line. Generally thought of as a Surrealist because of his interest in automatism and the use of sexual symbols, he rejected membership to any artistic movement in the interwar European years. André Breton, the founder of Surrealism, described him as “the most Surrealist of us all.”

Miró was the first artist to develop automatic drawing as a way to undo previous established techniques. He pursued his own interests in the art world, ranging from automatic drawing and Surrealism, to Expressionism and Color Field painting. He also proposed four-dimensional painting; a theoretical type of painting in which painting would transcend its two-dimensionality and even the three-dimensionality of sculpture.

In the etching “Bague d’Aurore” we see Miró’s stream of consciousness relayed in the typical line drawn forms color dots of his unique universe.

“The Pine Tree” is a rare Miró artist’s proof that is signed and dedicated to a friend of the renowned master. In it, we see an original color etching in the center that depicts a smiling figure who appears to be aloft in a voluptuous sea of aquatint winds and other universal ephemera. It is

reminiscent of man and his place in this world amidst all the mysteries we cannot possibly know. It is also reflective of all those things in our lives that come in to touch us profoundly as we go about our traditional routines.

Miró’s homage to Catalan architect Gaudi in “Gaudi XVI” is piece from the artist’s time working with his friend Joan Barbara who owned a famous engraving workshop in Barcelona. A sophisticated figure is central stage as usual surrounding by what could be construed as a building block, denoting the man intensely focused within his profession. The Gaudi series is among the most coveted fine print works of Miró. “La Demoiselle A Bascule” or Lady on a Swing is a gorgeous etching enhanced with Miró’s signature aquatint and carborundum. A stunning piece for its bold central figure and celebratory ambience, it reflects a discernable joie de vivre. It is from a limited edition of 75 and is signed with pencil in the lower right. “Le Jardin De Mousse” is a special piece not only for its thorough use of black but for the matter of the black ink escaping the printed field at one section to bleed over onto the matted margins. “L’Astre Du Marecage” is a superb example of Miró’s creative use of textures and surfaces in his large-scale color etchings of the 1960s. We see a fantastical abstract solar system in brilliant aquatints on pale cream paper.

CORNEILLE (van Beverloo) * 1922 Belgium - † 2010 France

Dutch artist Corneille was born in 1922 and studied at the Academy of Art in Amsterdam, Holland. He was one of the founders of the seminal REFLEX movement in 1948. As a co- founder of COBRA-the famed experimental artists group in 1949, he became a leading abstract expressionist painter and print maker along with such notables as Appel, Alechinksy, Jorn and Dubuffet and had great influence on Scandinavian art. He was strongly influenced by artists Miró and Klee as well as a passion for African art. This emerged as a signature style derived from the simple, bold graphic look of artifacts mixed with his unique perspective from a seemingly bird’s eye view of landscapes and environment.

areas of the Negev and Judean Deserts, depending on the texture and color required. Due to the silicone varnishes and durability of the oil inks and sand, Terragraphs can be framed without glass. This allows for a direct relationship between viewer and the work that emphasizes a raw connection with the vibrant colors and textures.

This vision, articulated through the technique of Terragraph printing, solidified his very unique voice. The process involves combining advanced binding materials with sand. The sand of the Terragraph is collected in specific

In the mid 1950’s he traveled and exhibited throughout Western Europe. He first came to the United States in 1958 having two years earlier won First Honorable Mention at the Carnegie Institute. Here he was heralded for his spirited and imaginative works. Unlike others, Corneille packed form and content in an otherwise restricted

genre. He was soon presented with many prizes and awards, and his works were collected by museums in South America, Africa and Australia. In September 2003 he had an exhibition of prints & drawings in the RamatGan Museum of Art, Israel. Corneille passed away in 2010.

DAVID SCHNEUER * 1905 Poland - † 1988 Israel

Born in 1905 in Galicia, Poland, David Schneuer grew up in Munich. Upon graduation from school, he moved to Paris, where he associated with many artists whose works helped to define the Expressionist movement. Eventually, he returned to Munich and joined the staff of the Muenchener Schauspielhaus, collaborating with such influential theatrical figures as Berthold Brecht in producing numerous stage designs and posters. The motifs of his theater work, exuberant and sensuous characters drawn with virtuosity and refined in subtle colors, also became signature as the foundations for his paintings. In 1933, he was arrested by the Nazi party and imprisoned in Dachau as a cultural revolutionary. After his release, he emigrated to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv, where he became immersed in painting. His canvases became populated with stylized figures that inhabited the 1920s Paris of his memory. 21. | “Pink Dress” | Gouache on Paper | 17.5” x 16.5”

Examples of this can be seen in “The Pink Dress” and “The Orange Dress” where debonair gentlemen and their sophisticated ladies populate the promenades showing off their chic apparel and complementary airs. In “Après Midi” we see a typical social scene of the time where society’s participants were prone to mingling in the various watering holes and pubs as part of their everyday routines.

An one of Schneuer’s most recognized pieces, “Rivoli”, we see a depiction of the famous street in Paris where he would watch the well clad men and women window shopping and strolling the sidewalks. These references are all the more interesting when one considers the fact that Schneuer actually only lived in Paris for less than one year, residing mostly in the cheaper red light district. Observing the social set from his life in the streets, brothels, cafes and bars left a lasting impression on the artist.

Schneuer’s works are housed in permanent collections around the world including the Muenchener Stadmuseum, Spertus Museum Chicago, Boston Fine Art Museum, Tel Aviv Museum, the Israel Museum and Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. German artist Clemens Kindling fell for painting early in his life, inspired by the scenes all around him. Later on, after a Berlin education and travels during his army service, his work became influenced by a strong Bauhaus orientation. The cubist and linear elements mixed with his adventurous color and masterful plays on light became signature to his paintings.

of his home. This was right before World War II. The piece “Oder Piece I” pays homage to Van Gogh’s “The Bridge” with its similar composition and vivacious coloring. In 1952, Clemens managed to escape East Germany right before the border sectors were closed so many of these early works are touched by a sense of nostalgia. The artist’s last, most intensive creative period was during 1990/91. He returned from three trips to Italy with sketchbooks chock-full of images. The final yield from these trips consisted of 80 pictures, mostly pastels. Unfortunately, many more, particularly oils, remained unfinished as the artist passed away on March 10, 1992.

The artist enjoyed painting pensive views of cities as much as he did landscapes, portraits, or nudes. “Sawmill in the Village” is an exquisite example of his textural fluidity and use of color. When he was only twenty-two years old, he painted “Village Street”; a simple portrait of boys hanging around a corner of their quaint farm town, reminiscent

Paul Wunderlich was born in Eberswalde, outside of Berlin on March 10, 1927. After secondary school, military service and a short stint as a prisoner of war, he studied at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Art from 1947 to 1951. Fresh out of art school, he was entrusted with managing the academy’s print workshop, where he made prints for Oskar Kokoschka and Emil Nolde, among others. After a three-year stay in Paris he returned to Hamburg in 1963 as a professor of painting. He resigned from his profes-

Wunderlich was a prolific producer of work whether painting, sculpture or fine prints. Truly gifted, he embraced all mediums to facilitate his extreme drive to create. In his lifetime, he made more than 400 limited edition sculptures and over 1,000 fine prints, making his work accessible to the public in a truly magnificent way. Many of his limited edition sculptures have become increasingly rare over the last years and “Small Nike” and “À Deux” are completely sold out. These are the last exemplars of each edition.

They divided their time between that home and their second residence in the Provence of the South of France, where he died suddenly on June 6, 2010 surrounded by his family. Wunderlich belonged to a group of contemporary German artists with an international reputation. His artistry was connected with “Fantastic Realism,” a unique and distinctive style developed around 1950 by a group of young European artists who chose images from their dream visions as subject matter. Today, the artist is linked with the second generation of Fantastic Realists, sometimes called Magical Realists. Wunderlich often borrowed his imagery from classical mythology and art history, furthermore accentuating this articulation with a surreal eroticism and aesthetic symbolism. Seen in both his paintings and his sculpture, this respect for the past weaves together his overall body of work, even when at times he was known as the “L’Enfant Teribble” for his liberated expressions of the sensual.

RUFINO TAMAYO

* 1899 Mexico - † 1991 Mexico Born in Oaxaca, Mexico in 1899 to descendants of the Zapotec Indians, Rufino Tamayo enjoyed a seventy-year career as part of his country’s most celebrated 20th century painters. Along with contemporaries Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros, his work embodied the spirit of his nation’s times. Not only did Tamayo’s oeuvre cover day to day life and observations within his culture, but also the revolutions and important issues of the era. In the vivid colors of his native Latin American culture, he expressed his own personal identity as well as the mass consciousness of his people. Although he attended the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, his independent nature compelled him to soon seek his own studies. He was given the head designer role in the department of ethnographic drawings at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City and became influenced by the pre-Columbian artifacts that surrounded him in this position. In 1926 he experienced the fame of two one-man shows, one in Mexico City and one in New York City. His rise grew rapidly from this moment and stretched throughout Europe where he spent periods of time in Paris with his wife, the accomplished concert pianist Olga Flores Reyes. 33. | Hombre en la Ventana | Mixograph on hand crafted paper Edition of 100 | 35” x 27” | 1980

Over the course of his life, he created over 20 major murals across the world and became known as one of the distinct printmakers internationally. Incorporating elements of Cubism, Surrealism and Expressionism into his work, his style was highly individualized and utilized radical new methods of print-processes such as his famous mixografies. The technique, signature to many of Tamayo’s most famous works, allowed the artist to transfer characteristics of painting, bas-relief and assemblage onto paper without losing the graphic quality. The results are a unique original print with three-dimensional attributes in texture and gesture.

Today his work is included in the world’s most esteemed collections such as the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Hombre En La Ventana (Man at the Window) is a wonderful example of his work with Fine Prints. Heavy textured hand crafted paper with relief imprints that make the window and the man stand out vividly. This Fine Print was executed in a technique that Tamayo called “Mixografia” a mixture of Carborundum, Relief print and etching.

The Palace of Fine Arts, Mexico City, honored Tamayo’s twenty-fifth year as a painter with a retrospective exhibition in 1948 and two years later, he was given three rooms at the Venice Biennale. He won the Grand Prix for painting at the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil in 1953.

It is considered a very important piece from the later period of his work, so important that the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (short LACMA) has one exemplar in their collection.

BOB FREIMARK

* 1922 U.S.A. - † 2010 U.S.A. Born in 1922, American artist Bob Freimark hails from a period when artists were experimenting with multiple mediums to express their conceptual ideas. Over the course of his career, he chose to work in a wide variety of media to articulate the issues important to him including painting, watercolor, drawing, all print media, tapestry, sculpture, and recently video and film. He was educated at the University of Toledo, before going on for an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Later he became a student of Max Weber, and was elected to New Talent in the USA in 1957. In the period from 1960-68 he created a series of serigraphs entitled “Fifty States” which depict the U.S. states, and were completed under the aegis of a California State Colleges Special Creative Leave. They became the official U.S. bicentennial offering in 1976, opening at the Amerika Haus in Munich. They have been shown throughout the world, and the National Museum in Washington has acquired the complete set together with all accompanying sketches, and plates.

Although he was born in the United States, Freimark was of European descent. In his piece, “Immigration Blues” we can see his sensitivity towards the immigrant situation. His placement of the patriotic colors red, white and blue at the top of the work symbolize the desired goal. Underneath it are various maze-like pathways to get to the same place; a metaphor for the multiple routes people have gone through to get into this country.

Freimark has over 250 solo exhibitions to his credit. His works are in collections such as the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Fogg Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, British Museum, Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, Honolulu Academy of Arts, Library of Congress, National Gallery in Prague, etc. He has lectured around the world, and was a Visiting Professor at Harvard University in 1972-73. Freimark passed away in 2010.

GERD LIEDER

* 1955 Germany - lives and works in Germany Born in 1955, artist Gerd Lieder is known for the way he shows us the visual and experiential world by means of reflection. Since 2000 he has carried different mirrors with him through the world to arrange as conspirators to his unique observations. Strategically placed to see his subjects through, this process creates a freeze-framing filter, remarking on the ways our perceptions always create personal renditions of a literal subject rather than reality. We can see this in the piece “Rendezvous”, where the artist shows us a portrait of his wife looking into a mirror, obliterated from identification but clearly intimate to his eye.

Other times, he lets glass and natural reflections do the work. We see this in the piece “Rodeo Drive” which captures a small moment in time accentuated by the passersby and activity going on within that split second. Once these instances are placed within the context of this quasi-still life performance, they are photographed

and then painted. The finished work in turn becomes reflected with the artist’s intention. Overall, his paintings remark on the transient qualities of reality affected by experience, place, circumstance, time and the ever changing and impermanent perceptions of the viewer.

DELADIER ALMEIDA

* 1961 Brazil - lives and works in U.S.A. Brazilian artist Deladier Almeida lives and works in the United States. His recent series of paintings examine our cultural obsession with capturing events on digital film in a world where everyone has become a photojournalist. The poignant portraits of groups of people, all armed with their digital tools, reflect our communal impulse as individuals to be part of a momentous event without truly being present to engage in the actual event. The real story in these scenes begins once the artist punctures through that first layer of silliness. He attempts to then find a brief state of limited self-consciousness in which the immediate impulse takes hold and the resulting expressions and

body language align with their purpose in a rare moment of innocence and liberation. In the piece “Two Minutes” we see a commemorative demonstration held in London’s Trafalgar Square ion July 14, 2005. The composition is dominated, not by the ranks of demonstrators gathered on the steps leading up to the National Gallery, by a group of still and television cameramen in the foreground, recording the event. Interestingly, two of the three figures holding cameras are facing away from the demonstrators. They are gathering information about the reaction to the demonstration, rather than the demonstration itself.

WILLI KISSMER

Willi Kissmer was born in 1951 in Duisburg, Germany, where he remains today as well as the South of France. After his studies at the renowned Folkwang art school, he’s made a name for himself as both a musician and an artist. His etchings, which mostly depict nudes or half nudes, are oftentimes draped in swaths of lush fabric. The details of which are accentuated in ultra-realistic texture, crease and form brought forth through his signature techniques that combine mezzotint, dry point and aquatint. Beside these graphic prints, Kissmer produces technically exquisite paintings in oil or acrylic. Instead of working on a structured canvas, he paints on paper-mounted plywood. Its smooth surface permits the reproduction of the finest details highlighting the juxtaposition between flesh and cloth. As seen in both “Standing With Pink Top” and “Sitting Woman With Pink Top”, this contrast presents the beautiful body of a woman against the ensuing folds and wrinkles created in her top – a moment of friction as electric as the visage of the human form. Finding inspiration in his immediate surroundings, his model is usually his wife. Presented as a subject of eroticism and detailed study, he articulates our communal relationship with objects of desire. In his pictures, the artist prefers the torso. He consciously omits the representation of the head, abstains from indi-

vidual facial features, and often also from the rendition of hands, the gestures of which could impair the composition and thus the statement. The omission of individuality as well as psyche, the concentration on universal anonymity, and the emphasis on the body indicate Kissmer’s actual concern, i.e. to deliver symbols of elementary human life, which find their most beautiful expression in the blooming female body.

In “Zoe Reading” and “Stroke of Noon” his solitary subjects are created through expressionist marks, which blend the figures seamlessly into their surroundings where sharpness of line and blurred stroke of color lend hints towards feeling, place and time.

Azgour’s painting “Ascension” represents his typical style of presenting figures in a moment of interaction in which the emotional and circumstantial timbre becomes implied through expressive and geometric abstractions of the human forms and their environment.

Michael’s work has been shown in galleries across the country and his paintings are part of over forty public and private collections in the United States and Europe. Although he is a relatively young artist, he has continued to make all the right decisions in his career, including a recent solo show in the Art Museum of Los Gatos, California.

This results in the presence of an invisible and evocative narrative that invites psychological interpretations. Distortions in form and depth—as well as an emphasis on expressive paint application—often create a visual

EBERHARD HUECKSTAEDT * 1936 Germany - lives and works in Germany

Hueckstaedt wanted to move west and did so even with little money or resources. He learned that the government had accumulated a massive file on him as a suspected dissident and so he settled with his family in Hanover to start a new life in the thralls of freedom. It was now that he could entirely focus on a body of work that placed him in a prestigious gallery that gained him newfound exposure and recognition throughout Central Europe. His painting style employs a unique combination of watercolor, charcoal and plaster creating transparencies and variation in stroke and line. His nude figures seemingly float on the canvas, soft and otherworldly. Oftentimes he paints of faces that inspire him such as artists, composers, actors/actresses and authors like in his painting “Annamaria (Fellini’s Faces)”. Eberhard Hueckstaedt was born in Potsdam, Germany in 1936 where he survived the World War II bombings of Potsdam and neighboring Berlin. At the war’s end, he was moved to the house of his beloved grandparents in Mecklenburg in what was then East Germany. Despite the oppression, he experienced a happy childhood with six other grandchildren. In 1950, he took an apprenticeship at an art enterprise in Mecklenburg. He continued there until 1954 working on the restoration of churches in the area while honing his unique voice. In 1959, he topped off his education with five years enrollment in the College of Fine Arts in Dresden. Finally he established his own studio, albeit under the scrutiny of the Communist East German government. Despite his struggle with the system, he was able to achieve great artistic success, participating in many exhibits, and winning numerous art prizes and awards.

KARIN VOELKER

* 1958 Germany - lives and works in Germany Born in 1958 in Kierspe, Germany, Karin Voelker studied art at the College of Fine Art in Berlin. Her creative works reflect powerful bodies engaged in the actions of dance, movement and lyricism. Her paintings are strong, animated with energy, tension and confident sensuality. To highlight these attributes she has created a distinct style throughout her career that combines a series of highly practiced techniques. Using rags, pens, fine tipped and wide brushes to create variations in form, her contours become delineated and insinuated simultaneously. Layered geometries created by light and dark areas across intuitive overlaps and folds express a sense of collage adding to the overall depth of her work. This, in conjunction with elements of spraying techniques that allow color to bleed and transpose against each other, accentuate the overall effect with luminosity. In all of these pictures the ratio of quiet elements to restless elements enhance the physicality upon the canvas. A phenomenological stream of consciousness becomes composed – that is, the continual movement of thoughts that have externalized themselves and cover and register the body in a way that makes the silence seem suspended and the meditation on the moment preserved.

In her mixed media works on paper, the artist becomes lyrical. Here moods are released, but in a way that is different from that of impressionism or expressionism. The female bodies, partially abstracted, merge in a different way with matter. Her imagination defines the setting for the canvas.

DENIS JULLY

* 1952 France - lives and works in France Denis Jully was born 1952 in Mulhouse, France, the cradle of the Alsatian textile industry. He was thoroughly trained as a fabric maker. After founding the government factories of the Shah of Iran, the former fabric ennobler has transferred to his paintings all the details of this craft, such as the color hues and decomposition, and the tension created by spaces on canvas, typical of printed fabrics. Jully’s haunting canvases depict the passions of life, the tranquility of the soul and the confluence of the two. His paintings evoke awareness of one’s journey through both. His use of symbolism without obscurity and mystical images without sentimentality invite the need for peacefulness within the power of modern society. With strokes of genius that are never spotlighted, he applauds the passions of living our fully human lives, letting the blended colors bow to the spiritual part of life we may not actually see. The artist has said that like Goethe, he is inspired by the “discovery of hidden humanity.”

NEIL NAGY

* 1941 U.S.A. - lives and works in U.S.A. Neil Nagy was born in 1941 in the East Los Angeles community of El Sereno amongst the Mexican culture, of which its buoyant joyfulness and bold colors would greatly influence his future artistic sensibilities. In the early 1960s Nagy gained exposure to the art of the Bay Area Figurative painters Manual Neri and Nathan Oliveira as an Art and Design student at San Jose State College. The laid-back attitude of the period resulted in a lighter and more humanist interpretation of the severe existential Northern European styles. This, along with the explosion of Abstract Expressionism, informed Nagy’s style and work. Married shortly out of college, he took a job as an industrial designer and eventually started his own consulting firm, Nagy Design, which grew into an internationally recognized entity in the design community. Eventually he sold his business in order to concentrate his full attention on his art, which had continued throughout this time uninterrupted.

Neil’s focus was on figurative expressionism, in which he used the human form in mild abstractions to articulate spiritual and physical existentialism. For him, the single human form was the most powerful means of delivering works of poignant beauty that also carried intense emotional messages. In later years, Nagy traveled extensively in Mexico to drink in the colorful life of the people and the country and to study ancient Mayan civilizations. Several residencies in the plains of the Bahio and the central western coast added to this influence on his life and especially his art.

MANZUR KARGAR

Although born in Afghanistan, artist Manzur Kargar was raised in West Berlin. He studied Fine Art and Painting in Braunschweig at one of the most prestigious universities for painting in Germany. His early career focused on epic paintings from mythological times of gods and goddesses amongst the architecture and environments of antiquity. This body carried him to success until his obsessions took him elsewhere. Having thoroughly explored the ancient cultural paradigms he turned his eye towards the icons of today’s society. Inspired by the images we confront daily within the media and advertising, he began to compose new bold, sexy, and passionate paintings showcasing the new mythological creatures of today. * 1943 Germany - lives and works in Germany Inspired by the modernist search for truth, Sigurd Rakel’s still life paintings are a fusion of cubist compositions and fauvist color. His appreciation for underlying structure led him to admire the work of Picasso and Braque. Imitating their deconstruction of space, Rakel learned to master the abstraction of form. For him, the process of diminishing the object to its essential substance is a process he likens to the search for artistic truth. While traditional cubism eschewed color to focus objectively on issues of space and form, Rakel delights in bold explosions of color that are reminiscent of Matisse’s fauve paintings. His interest in purity extends to the application of color. He applies only pure colors to the picture’s scale surface; any mixing or manipulation of colors is done directly on the canvas. * 1955 Germany - lives and works in Germany Thomas Ritter’s complex abstract paintings are inspired by his love of nature. He often spends time in the countryside, where the various landscapes and their variables of time, geography and light make distinct impressions of color, shape and mood upon his mind. These impressions are then articulated upon his canvas through a process of layered compositions. Grounds of acrylic and filler compound are built up first, allowing for quick, intuitive blocks of base. On top of this rich foundation, oils are then added to educe lushness, blurred lines and a density that allows the viewer to see inside the myriad complexities of the final painting. The references to nature can be interred, yet a whole new image has been created. The numerous nuances in color, the blurring and painting over, and the working of color with a spatula are all displayed before our eyes without having the effect of looking constructed. For example, an aggressive color like red blends into the painting’s composition without overwhelming it. When one looks closely, the entire spectrum of forms and shapes can be seen and analyzed. Again and again, the abstract works created reveal surprising discoveries.

She studied Fine Art in Munich form 1977-1982 and has had more than 100 single exhibitions all over Germany, Europe and the United States with over 30 printed publications published to date. Gabriele’s paintings are considered individual pieces of visual poetry expressed through the mixed mediums of oil, acrylic and chalk. Utilizing collage techniques, she carefully constructs depth-filled pieces from elements of text, heavy texture, varying brush strokes and moments that blur the edges between hard and soft application. His convictions about exposing his people to the treasures of art and determination towards being able to teach its history and encourage its future are admirable. His work is distinguished by the balance of the composition and constant artistic excellence and skillful artistry regardless of the medium he chooses to work in. Intensely focused, Schettler is also a renowned recluse who chose to live as a hermit, without even a telephone, after falling victim to the East German political system early on. From a top floor in his barn, he created many works that eventually were smuggled underneath the cars of relatives in order to be shared with the world. “Sea with Sailboat” is one of these very few paintings that were created before Germany had reunited and had to be smuggled out by his relatives. Since 1972 he has exhibited his paintings in regional as well as national exhibitions throughout Germany.

This old world locale known as the Mini-Venice of Bavaria has greatly influenced the artist’s work as he presents us with paintings that reflect a harmony between the old and new worlds. Upon his canvas, fleeting moments, subjective gestures and thin, monotone veils become transparencies through which we glimpse figures and imagery that provoke closer inspection. He invites us in to uncover and then linger. He continually evokes the desire to halt and ponder without the haste considerations of modern times. *1946 Germany - lives and works in Germany Gina Gass has said that her artwork reflects her desire to express her ambivalent views of the world honestly through both a subjective and objective glance. To achieve this fine balance she utilizes a signature combination of techniques facilitated by the pasty opaqueness of gouache colors. Rapid, flowing brush strokes create an unreal, chalky colorfulness of refracted, matte tones, which layered over one another, often allow the undercoat to shimmer through. The compact surface permits “in”-sights and the viewer has a sense of having to work his way gradually through the “skins” of the painting to discover its interrelationships. This structuring, the breaking up of the surface through a myriad of splatters, spots, rapid, and scriptural lines, gives an idea of incessant, restless motion. It creates the illusion that, with their far-flung steps, their repertoire of graceful and capricious gestures, the two-dimensional figures create a space for themselves that they can traverse and own. This alone is the tangible reality of the painting, the familiar relationship between figure and space in their dialog with each other.

OLEG DOSORTSEV

* 1957 Russia - lives and works in Russia Oleg Dosortsev studied at the prestigious Repin University in St. Petersburg where he gained a classical “Old Masters” education, which emphasized barely visible brush strokes and a technique conveyed in meticulous detail. Although he contracted polio and lacked proper vaccination, confining him to a 5th floor apartment for most of his days, he continued to paint, facilitated by the aid of family and friends who made sure he was well equipped to perform his magic upon the canvas. Because of his physical and social immobility, his imagination replaced life experience in choice of subject matter. Dosortsev turned into a kind of modern day Hieronymus Bosch, painting the wild fragments of the subconscious mingled with images educed from the medieval and traditional literature he voraciously explored. In addition, even his subjects, seem old fashioned, tinged with religious themes and characters from Greek and Egyptian mythology. Dosortsev articulates surrealistic and realistic elements side by side and inviting the viewer to co-philosophize. His paintings require the viewer towards thoughtful reflection in order to penetrate and understand their meaning.

* 1951 Austria - lives and works in Austria and Germany As one of Germany’s most important contemporary female artists, Xenia Hausner brings her country’s legacy of German expressionism into the 21st century with the daring colors, compositions and insights of her intense social and personal portraits. The harsh severity of the genre’s forefathers such as Max Beckman and Otto Dix mingle on her canvas with a cool, feminine eye that educes the emotionality of her subjects in a figurative fashion. Early on, after passing his examinations as a concert violinist and music teacher, his efforts turned to acting. In 1980 he immigrated to West Germany, where he established himself as an actor, soon making his way to Hollywood to join the ranks of international screen stars such as George Clooney, Michael Douglas, John Malkovich and Tom Hanks. Mueller-Stahl painted for over forty years before his work was first presented to the public through a 2001 spring exhibition at the Babelsberg Film Museum in Potsdam. “Painting, writing, making music and acting simply belong together, as I see it,” says the artist, who also admits that painting is his most honest endeavor as it reflects authentic representations of truth.

Artist Edward Wilcox paints contemporary scenes that are tinged with the moodiness of Gothic works or elevated with the lofty, projected ideals of fantasy worlds. This is oftentimes articulated through the use of materials such as tar upon his canvas. His intense visions and expressions stem from his observations of the evolution of culture, of which he feels is imbalanced with personal ambition and material gain. Thus his pieces are nostalgic glimpses towards an ideal world full of sepia tinged glory and reminiscence. The artist has stated that he draws on memories of the past in order to cope with the present.

NATALIA RUDOLF

* 1963 Russia - lives and works in Germany Russian-born artist Natalia Rudolf grew up in a family that recognized and encouraged her talent early on. Her father drew well and her mother encouraged her emotionality. She was also very influenced by his uncle who was a designer. His early death pushed her to continue down the artistic path including an education at the National Art School for children, which she originally pursued without even the knowledge of her own parents. She successfully graduated from the Art Academy in Moscow in 1984, where she met her future husband and wood sculptor Wladimir Rudolf. Natalia’s strong background in craftsmanship, art history and working with shapes and colors greatly influences her work. Drawing upon the Old Masters, she paints a wide variety of motifs that all radiate a vibrant, zest for life. Her works are exquisitely composed so that paint, line and surface equally balance upon the canvas creating harmonies that delight the eye and the inner spirit. This can be seen in the lyrical yet precise painting “Apple Blossoms.”

WLADIMIR RUDOLF

* 1959 Russia - lives and works in Germany Russian artist Wladimir Rudolf became fascinated with the three-dimensionality of objects early on. Even though he spent his early years in mandatory military service, he practiced his hands at sculpture and even created a commission for a Russian playground at the age of 20. He went on to master the medium of wood and studied its unique characters within the sculptural form at the Art Institute of Moscow. He fell in love with the material and continues to sculpt strong and animated pieces from it today. Although he’s married to Russian artist Natalia Rudolf, he calls wood his “partner.” It represents to him the forgotten fifth element after water, earth, air and fire.

* 1969 U.S.A. - lives and works in U.S.A. Sculptor jd hansen’s work reflects the subtleties of emotional circumstance moment by moment. Whether reflecting tension, conflict, peace or joy through the smallest tilt of the head or position of an arm, she constructs exquisite portraits of the human condition in her own unique voice. This voice comes across in aesthetically approachable exteriors where smooth textures give way to melted roughness and dignified postures warp into emotional curves. The warm bronze becomes a vehicle for intense and complex psychological permutations, acting themselves out within the classic medium. Jd hansen has gained considerable recognition over the past few years with numerous articles in national publications as well as gallery representation across the United States. SIEGFRIED NEUENHAUSEN * 1951 Germany - lives and works in Germany Beginning in the 1960s, German artist Siegfried Neuenhausen has mastered the role of presenting life’s eternally sublime theater through the sculptural form. His sculptures, representative of the common man, weave together the myriad inherencies of the human condition through individual glimpses at circumstance, often tinged with the ironic, complex or idiosyncratic. Consideration of one piece oftentimes leads to an overall sense that we are “all in this together”, thus perpetuating the work’s universal relativity and conversation starter status. Figurative in nature, and defined by the genre of critical realism, the sculptures invite us into the world of our own human foible therefore allowing us, with a wink and a bow, to relate to the universal themes of everyday existence. Neuenhausen is one of the most distinguished representatives of Critical Realism. Apart from having been a Professor at the University of Art in Braunschweig for thirty years, the artist has been a facilitator for group creative projects as well. With sculpture projects in prisons, psychiatric clinics and senior citizen homes, the artist has enabled amateurs to tap into their creative talents.

* 1927 Germany - lives and works in Germany Heinz Spilker’s sculptures pay homage to the nude human form in its pared down glory, absent of airs or implication. Simple, down to earth patinas present the curves and lines of the body in warm, realist tones. In moments of reflection, unobtrusively observed by the artist, the work articulates an innocent tenderness and soft admiration. Since 1961 the artist has enjoyed numerous exhibitions as well as a career creating private commissions for portraits and sculptures of animals.

BAERBEL DIECKMANN

* 1961 Germany - lives and works in Germany The human figure is the point of departure and focal inspiration of sculptor Baerbel Dieckmann’s work. Within this focus, however, she covers a broad ground ranging from portraits of specific individuals to those of the many nameless subjects she has created standing, sitting, crouching or reclining. Some works denote protagonists and scenes from Ancient Greek mythology, which represent the personifications of our society’s timeless psychological prototypes. She is particularly fascinated by the Minotaur, that monstrous hybrid of man and bull held captive in the labyrinth at Knossos that was ultimately slain by Theseus. Because her works are not sealed, the finished pieces carry a raw sense of roughness mixed with a fragility that has become her hallmark. Having sown the seeds of vitality in the surface texture of her clay models, the sculptress continues to process each individually after casting. Their aesthetic appeal oscillates between poles of sensual beauty and decadent morbidity.

PIERRE SCHUMANN

* 1917 Germany - lives and works in Germany and Italy Pierre Schumann was born 1917 in Heide, Germany. After high school he worked with a chiseler and learned the basics of modeling sculptures. Afterward he traveled through the Netherlands, France, and Belgium. World War II barred him from continuing his studies until 1947 when he resumed his apprenticeship at the studio of Edwin Scharff in Hamburg, Germany. He lived in an old windmill and worked in a studio underneath a subway arch in Lerchenfeld, Hamburg in the neighborhood of the University of Fine Art. The artist prefers to work in marble and granite with occasional explorations into steel and stone. Although his sculptures are contemporary in material and finish, their rudimentary shapes and primal blocks of form are reminiscent of the totems and icons of antiquity found in ancient archeology. This can be seen in “Small Bull” and “Reclining Female Torso”. His “Romeo and Julia” pieces furthermore combine insinuating shapes depicting the classic lovers, merging into each other through figures evoked in semi-abstraction.

Artist Christopher Schulz’s sculptures present the beautiful contours of the natural human figure combined with the presence of an internal mechanical world that is constantly working behind the scenes non-reliant on human interaction. They insinuate the inner workings of existence that take place as we rotate through society continually going through permutations of being stripped down, taken apart and reassembled. For example, like a three-dimensional Dali drawing come to life, the piece “Revisal” shows a stunning female figure, perfect in every way, with an insight into the heart cavity as well as the exposed gears adjacent to the hips. It’s as if she’s being redesigned as the viewer looks upon it. According to Schulz, “So many mechanical actions mimic how the human body works. I am always interested to see how far we will go in designing things that take the place of us in order to make things easier.” He is an artist who wants his audience to trust their own instinctive response, to understand that their response is as much a part of what the work is about as any thought that motivated him during its creation.

WALDEMAR CICHON

* 1955 Poland - lives and works in Poland Polish artist Waldemar Cichon is known for his whimsical sculptures made of various woods such as oak, beech and mahogany highlighting the individuals and emotional circumstances in our day-to-day lives. He has also worked in stone, bronze and snow, the latter of which garnered him awards in outdoor sculpture competitions in Finland, the United States, Canada, France, Germany and Sweden. Because of the artist’s contraction of RP (an eye disease), he has greatly reduced his work life, which makes his most recent sculptural output all the more precious.
