WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) The first rule is into a “window”, which looking through this window into a space. Inside the window, it contains all the various individual objects. It is also called “visual pyramid”, the apex of the pyramid is the eye which is then connected with individual points within the space to be represented. The entire system in plan yields the width and the elevation yields the height. Besides, the second rule is “ planar, transparent intersection of all those rays that fall from the eye onto the object it sees.” It means all perpendiculars meet at the central vanishing point. In additions, all parallels have a common vanishing point. for example, in a picture plane in 45 degree, the distance between their vanishing point and the central vanishing point is equal to the distance between the eye and the picture plane. Hence, from above, it shows that the portion of the picture is calculable from the preceding portion.

Question 2: Describe homogeneous space? (Maximum 100 words)

Homogeneous space is a “central perspective” with assumed actual subjective optical impression. It means a homogeneous is a purely mathematical space, which is unlike the structure of psychophysiological space. Besides, the basic elements, which are the points, are joined and mere determinations of position, possessing no independent content of their own outside of this relation. Hence, homogeneous space is never given space, but space produced by construction and the geometrical concept of homogeneity can be expressed by the postulate that form every point in space it must be possible to draw similar figures in all directions and magnitudes. Therefore, there is no restriction on the position and direction.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Perspective 1 This view is the first glance view of MArco Polo when he arrived the city of Adelma. He saw an old man carrying with a basket disappeared. The column indcates the disappearance of the old man.

Perspective 2 This view is the second stare view of Marco Polo. The looking is slightly looking upward as there is a girl on the balcony in the story.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2

Perspective 1: Remind the past This is the firsrt scense when Marco Polo landed the city of Adelma. The fish store and the man holding a fish and dirty concrete floor indicate Polo was in a wholesale fish market. The old man holding a basket and the fever victim lying on the floor reminded Polo his friend and his father respectively.

Perspective 2: Looking at the love This is the view when Marco Polo walking through the city of Adelma. The vegetable vendor and stevedores with demijohns and barrels showed Polo was standing inside the market next to the dock. He was looking at the girl on the balcony, which reminded him the girl he loved who killed herself, indicating Polo was sad about it.

WEEK 10 READING: PRACTISE: ARCHITECTURE, TECNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic would be something like painting and sculpture, that depend for their authenticity upon direct contact of the author, which it is assumed inherent value in the original work of art. However, allographic practise means it can be produced without direct intervention of the author, allographic arts are capable of being reproduced at a distance from the author by mean of notation. In addition, allographic arts operate through interpretation and on the basic of convention. They are subject to change and depemd upon notational practises as a consequence of the ephemerality of the work itself.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Representational techniques help architects in their designs and constuctions. It combined graphic information with measurements and specifications. Representation is not something added onto building but makes it possible in the first place. Besides, architectural drawing is transitive in nature, uniquely capable of producing something new from something else. In traditional representations, they presume stable objects and fixed subjects. but contemporary city is a place where visible and invisible streams of information, capital and subjects interact in complex formations. In order to intervene, architects need representational techniques the engage time and change, shifting scales, mobile points of view, and multiple programs.

Perspective 1: Remind the past

The city of Adelma showed the scenses of Marco Polo. Adelma is a dead city with sad and sorrow atmosphere. The views Polo saw reminded him his love, his family and his friends. Two perspective views indicated what he saw when he was walking in Adelma. First, Polo was landed at the dock. He was in the wholesale fish market. He saw a fever victim lying on the floor and the old man next to him reminded Polo his father and his friend. Afterwards, he walked to the vegetable market. He saw stevedores and a girl on the balcony, who he loved but killed herself. The city of Adelma depicted the darkness in the heart of Polo, where he felt frightened and scared about what he saw. Hence, the question is, is he alive or dead?
