The sideways movement of the edge of a plate of the earth’s crust into the mantle beneath another plate.

Unfortunately seismic waves resultant from subducting plates are the most damaging types of waves and create waves of the greatest magnitude 8-9 on the richter scale. The compression wave is felt as a vertical jolt as your body is accelerated vertically. It is a transverse wave were the energy propagation is horizontally but the particle displacement occurs perpendicular to the wave direction.

As the waves energy dissipates the destructive force of the wave lessens and so do the wave amplitudes creating rolling wave like motions like the ones seen on the ocean.
