Unfortunately seismic waves resultant from subducting plates are the most damaging types of waves and create waves of the greatest magnitude 8-9 on the richter scale. The magnitude is categorised as logarithmic increments to base 10, log10. The values of the magnitude of an earthquake are 10 time the previous.
The compression wave is felt as a vertical jolt as your body is accelerated vertically. It is a transverse wave were the energy propagation is horizontally but the particle displacement occurs perpendicular to the wave direction.
