Lean-infused Planning & Design In applying Lean techniques to care delivery , a graphic tool called a value stream map can be used to document the flows of patients, material, and information as these elements progress through the process of care of the “value stream.� It is important to map the current state and the future state, or ideal state. The goal is to imagine the ideal, and through a series of future state map iterations, eliminate the inefficiencies that are identified. The performance metrics to identify success of the future state will be in the areas of productivity, access, service delivery/patient loyalty and revenue generation. Application of these findings can result in measurable time savings for both patients and staff.

WEXNER MEDICAL CENTER AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSIT Y JAMES CANCER HOSPITAL AND SOLOVE RESE ARCH INSTITUTE AND CRITICAL CARE TOWER Since 2006, HOK has been the executive design architect for the South Campus Master Plan Implementation. The project is a growth and replacement of the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and associated translational research facilities, critical care beds, surgery and imaging. This plan will create a contemporary academic healthcare environment that merges research, clinical and educational missions to help propel Wexner Medical Center into the top quartile of academic medical centers. Additionally, HOK will position Wexner to address the rising demands for services and enhance the center’s identity through increased visibility and accessibility. The project scope also includes development of parking garages, master site planning and backfill renovation of existing hospital departments and engineering systems. HOK/Moody Nolan was awarded the Architect of Record role for this project, continuing HOK’s design and planning work by overseeing the remaining phases of implementation.

UNIVERSIT Y OF MISSOURI PATIENT CARE TOWER /ELLIS FISCHEL CANCER CENTER

The University of Missouri Health Care System selected HOK to design a new eight-story hospital expansion to include the Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. The tower is being built adjacent to University Hospital at the University of Missouri main campus. The Ellis Fischel Cancer Center has a rich tradition that will be fostered by its new proximity to other hospital functions. The lower two floors of the new addition will contain a new entrance for the cancer center, a cancer screening area, clinics, radiation oncology, infusion and imaging modalities including PET/CT. The center is developing Lean operational processes to gain the best efficiencies in the new building. The upper floors will include components to grow other programs aligned with existing facilities: •

ST. JOSEPH’S HOSPITAL EXPANSION AND RENOVATION

HOK served as the design architect for a major expansion and renovation project for St. Joseph’s Hospital. The project consisted of approximately 175,000 square feet of new space for a patient tower with 90 private patient rooms, radiology and outpatient services, a 15,000-square-foot emergency department expansion, and additional hospital renovation. Additionally, a 16,000-squarefoot material management facility with a 290-space parking ramp was developed. Another goal of the renovation at St. Joseph’s was to have 100 percent private rooms for the medical and surgical patients. HOK was the associate architect providing all medical planning and design. BWBR was the executive architect for the project.

ST. JOHN HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER

NORTH PAVILLION MASTER PL AN IMPLEMENTATION With ambitious goals for future growth, St. John Hospital and Medical Center developed the North Pavilion project as the first component of a phased replacement of beds within the medical center. HOK served as the lead designer and planner for the new four-story tower which houses a renovated emergency department, relocated and consolidated radiology department, cardiovascular services including non-invasive cardiology and vascular/cath labs, four 36-room nursing units and miscellaneous support services. The new building also provides for an additional four stories of nursing units in the future. The project’s new entry and lobby enhance the identity of the hospital and provide connectivity to existing campus facilities. St. John is a member of Ascension Health System, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the country. HOK provided architecture, medical planning, and interior design services. ADVOCATE GOOD SHEPHERD

BED TOWER EXPANSION AND RENOVATION HOK is completing the design validation phase for in-patient and interventional platform expansion for the Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Illinois. Earlier design stages included feasibility studies and lean process planning (including current state / future state analysis and finding ways to bring more services to the patient). The project will be delivered via an Integrated Project Delivery process with early involvement of design-assist subcontractors and construction is expected to begin in August of 2013. Development of patient care units includes implementation of Advocate design standards in coordination with the facility’s development of new operational strategies. The planning and design team have developed a positive and collaborative project environment with a shared commitment to key project objectives, including enhancement of the “Advocate Experience” of patient and familycentered care and development of the most operationally efficient project based on value-driven assessment of space and functional needs. NEW YORK PRESBY TERIAN HOSPITAL FACILIT Y ASSESSMENT & RE AL ESTATE MASTER PL AN

The University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell charged HOK to study how their facilities can best accommodate the future of healthcare in the context of aging facilities and infrastructure. The scope includes both their uptown and downtown Manhattan campuses. Working with the Hospital’s leadership at all levels we are qualitatively understanding potential growth and/or replacement opportunities in the highly competitive New York City healthcare market. New York-Presbyterian Hospital is a nationally ranked institution, but within the context of today’s economic uncertainty they must plan for the future to remain competitive. Planning studies encompass an urban scale vision of the Hospital fifteen to thirty years into the future as well as a macro level assessment of the existing facilities and infrastructure. Program and goal definitions enable the team to assess alternative growth strategies. Understanding the key role ambulatory procedures will play and developing strategies for the accommodation of faculty practices are two important components of the study. HARLEM HOSPITAL CENTER

MAJOR MODERNIZ ATION

Harlem Hospital is a campus of disparate and unconnected buildings built over ninety years on an urban site in upper Manhattan. The site lacks a strong overall plan for departmental location and growth as well as a coherent institutional image. Certain buildings are no longer appropriate for health care, and a new master plan study indicated that a new central pavilion with reconfiguration of existing buildings is a strong solution for modernization and future growth. The project is a large modernization and expansion program that will substantially improve the physical and therapeutic environment and provide more state-of-the-art services to the Harlem Community and its surrounding neighborhoods. This will be the hospital of choice for the present and future Harlem community, meeting community needs for growth of key programs, growth of medical specialties and sub specialties and research with affiliated medical schools. The new hospital designed as part of a joint venture by HOK and RMJM Hillier incorporates the most current thinking and best practices in healthcare design. Features of the new facility include an abundance of natural light; spacious and flexible operating rooms to accommodate robotics and other emerging technologies; advanced imaging and treatment areas; and allprivate, patient rooms designed to reduce falls, minimize risk of infection and enhance privacy, with room amenities such as wireless Internet access, dedicated ventilation and temperature control systems and room service dining. The new hospital will also incorporate the latest in sustainable design, featuring a broad spectrum of energy and resource conservation innovations to make it one of the most environmentally-advanced hospitals in the nation. RHODE ISL AND HOSPITAL LIFESPAN HE ALTH SYSTEM

Based on a Master Plan developed by HOK with Lifespan Health System for the hospital, HOK was commissioned to implement the phased Master Plan recommendations. The major new construction and related renovations provide a new Emergency Department with the ability to respond to catastrophic events, new state-of-the-art Operating Rooms directly above accommodating the latest surgical technologies, and a three story vertical expansion for critical care and acuity adaptable beds. The building design expresses the modernity of the approach to care within. It is a major conceptual and urban statement as both a physical bridge linking important clinical components on two sides of a major street, and a bridge to the future of care at Rhode Island Hospital.

MIRIAM HOSPITAL

LIFESPAN HE ALTH SYSTEM

HOK provided a master plan for the growth of the Miriam Hospital. The first building, the Clinical Services Building, includes a new and expanded imaging center on the first floor, completely new surgical facilities on the second floor and a new bed floor on the third floor incorporating state-of-theart bed accommodations for a range of acuities. Phases 2 and 3 provide an expanded Emergency Department, diagnostic and treatment areas, and a second new building, the Patient Services Facility, housing the remaining complement of new beds. The facilities plan for growth was done in collaboration with an active community who participated in a series of meetings so that broad consensus was achieved prior to formal submission to regulatory agencies. This collaboration extended to massing and building design, resulting in a building design that minimized bulk, is sensitive to its surroundings, and is designed with innovative materials expressing the hospital’s vision for the future for care delivery. WALTER REED NATIONAL MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER AT BETHESDA The new Walter Reed National Military Medical Center at Bethesda (WRNMMC) is a state-of-the-art medical, academic, and research center that integrates world class talent from the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Public Health and NOAA. HOK and AECOM developed the medical master planning, design bridging documents and the Design-Build Request for Proposal for the renovation and construction of patient care space for the WRNMMC. The project includes a 520,000 sq. ft. new ambulatory care addition, a 162,000 sq. ft. diagnostic and treatment addition, upgrades to the central energy plant and utilities, two new parking structures providing 2,150 parking spaces and 418,000 sq. ft. of renovation within the existing medical facility to support patient care. The project houses 344 patient beds and realigns the facilities’ diagnostic and treatment, inpatient and outpatient facilities for ease of access and efficiencies. In addition to the development of the RFP and bridging documents, AECOM & HOK have been awarded the post construction award services (PCAS) contract. SIDNEY AND LOIS ESKENA ZI HOSPITAL 4 Pursuing LEEDÂŽ certification

Wishard Hospital leaders were presented with an opportunity to create a contemporary public academic healthcare environment that merges research, clinical and educational missions. HOK is leading a team of 38 consultants to complete this 1.4 million-square-foot replacement medical center on a 37-acre site. The project will mark a new era for public hospitals by creating a welcoming, beautiful space for anyone seeking care. Additionally, it is a part of a growth strategy to propel Wishard into the top quartile of medical facilities. The campus program is organized around a central community green space, Wishard Commons, and includes inpatient care, ambulatory care, administrative, faculty office and research space. Wishard’s image will be enhanced through increased visibility and accessibility. Architects will define a strong external presence for the hospital. They will develop pedestrian, vehicular and open space connections within the campus and adjacent public areas. L AC+USC MEDICAL CENTER

MASTER PL AN AND REPL ACEMENT PROJECT

The LAC+USC Medical Center represents a consolidation and replacement of hospital functions presently located in 130 different facilities. The overall goal for the site was to program an ideal organization of the entire complex. To accomplish this, the architects created a vision for efficient organization focusing on the three main functions of the hospital: inpatient care; outpatient care; and diagnostic and treatment services. The diagnostic and treatment component of the facility contains over 500,000 square feet of usable space. Each floor is configured to accommodate both outpatient and inpatient access to services, which separates the patient populations to maintain privacy and deinstitutionalize the ambulatory environment.

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW ’S AND THE ROYAL LONDON HOSPITALS NEW HOSPITAL

HOK was selected to redevelop St. Bartholomew’s (Bart’s) and The Royal London Hospitals. The new development for the Royal London Hospital will replace old buildings with a coherent structure, purpose-built to support the delivery of 21stcentury clinical care. Bart’s Hospital will become a Cancer and Cardiac Centre of Excellence, incorporating services from The London Chest Hospital. The state-of-the-art facilities for cancer will include a Breast Care Centre, and patients will be investigated or treated for heart disease using the most up-to-date equipment. The proposals for Bart’s blend the hospital’s historic Georgian buildings with the modern architecture of a new building designed for 21st -century clinical care. The proposals for The Royal London, together with those for Bart’s, will provide a total of up to 1,248 beds. HOK was recently selected to be the Executive architect for BJC Health System on the long-term project to renew the Kingshighway Boulevard medical center campus, which encompasses Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. Phase I of the project is over 800,000 sq. ft. of new construction and renovation including 453 new beds, Mother and Infants, Cancer, Surgery, Administration, Education, Research and Parking.

CEDARS-SINAI MEDICAL CENTER ADVANCED HE ALTH SCIENCES PAVILION

The Advanced Health Sciences Pavilion (AHSP) at Cedars-Sinai is designed as a state of the art building, bringing together all functions represented by a ‘cutting edge’ medical center. The Pavilion will include facilities for the nation’s top researchers and physicians to work together in contiguous space in order to bring the most current knowledge and practice to the community. The building is situated on a public edge of the Cedars-Sinai campus, adjacent to its primary circulation spine. Due to this high profile location, the AHSP will create a new symbolic entry to the medical center. A gentle, curving facade invites visitors and provides a welcoming public face to the surrounding community. This curve is accentuated with a glass ‘lantern’ at the northernmost edge. TORONTO GENER AL HOSPITAL CLINICAL SERVICES BUILDING The Toronto Hospital resolves a range of planning issues related to effective health care delivery on an urban site adjacent to Toronto’s main civic boulevard. Four individual hospitals have been consolidated into three new facilities. The project represents a carefully-measured response that appropriately reflects the need to adapt to changing technology and enhanced quality in patient care accommodations. The new Hospital includes 224-beds of highacuity-level nursing units. In addition, 22 new operating rooms have been developed, two of which integrate imaging and surgical protocols. The surgical suite is aligned with Cardiovascular and Surgical ICUs as well as a Short Stay unit creating a surgical platform-of-care with direct and easy access. A spectacular four-story Patient Court is a glowing centerpiece for the building. It provides communal campus space in a protected environment and provides a landscaped, lightfilled, soaring space that serves as an area of respite for ambulatory patients, staff and visitors. METHODIST HEALTH SYSTEM AND HCA CORPOR ATION STONE OAK HOSPITAL

What began as the winner of HCA’s nationwide design competition for the Hospital of the Future eventually became the final design for Stone Oak Hospital in one of the fastest growing communities in the country. The hospital embodies a forwardthinking brand and modern image balanced with rational concepts that address streamlined staffing and cost-effective phased construction. The goal of the design was to improved care, offer greater efficiency, and a superior patient environment by bringing together the best patient care ideas and the design concepts that support them. Within the first month of opening the hospital experienced higher-than-expected census numbers. Patients and practitioners have praised the easy access to portals of care for all services.

COMMUNIT Y HOSPITAL OF THE MONTEREY PENINSUL A PAVILION EXPANSION

The Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP) project consists of approximately 270,000 square feet of new and renovated construction including a new patient bed wing and a new diagnostic and treatment wing. The hospital features 100 percent single-bed, multi-acuity patient rooms developed around a series of healing gardens. The design team faced the challenges of incorporating the new facilities into an environmentally-protected area and maintaining the character and integrity of the original design. HOK worked with the landscape architect and CHOMP to site the new wings so as to minimize intrusion into the forest and maintain existing views of nature, while creating critical adjacencies that are important for hospital functionality. In addition, the design team is adhering to CHOMP’s expressed desire to maintain the look of Stone’s original design so that the new construction falls within the contextual character of the existing building.

COLUMBIA ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL L AKE DRIVE MAIN HOSPITAL

HOK designed a new hospital campus to integrate the existing Columbia and St. Mary’s Hospital campuses into a single new facility constructed on a prominent site overlooking Lake Michigan. Tasked to improve the patient experience, HOK developed an innovative diagnostic and treatment chassis that will separate inpatient and outpatient traffic while maintaining flexibility in perioperative space and other support space. The design will support an intuitive traffic pattern from campus entry to the point of care. An overall improvement in flow is expected to reduce travel distances, increase the proportion of time caregivers spend with patients and boost patient and staff satisq. ft. action. The new medical campus consists of 463 beds, expansive ambulatory care facilities, clinic space for over 150 physicians, and structured parking. A second facilities expansion project at the Ozaukee Campus includes a new inpatient tower with 160 beds and a new medical office building. COLUMBIA ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL

PROSPECT MEDICAL COMMONS

HOK has completed a five-story medical officeretail complex for Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital - the first phase of the health system’s new Lake Drive Campus. The four upper stories (96,000 square feet) of the complex house medical office space for about 70 physicians including Columbia St. Mary’s Community Physicians (CSMCP) and other independent physicians. Whole Foods Market occupies the first floor (54,000 square feet) of the building. A five-story parking structure provides additional parking, which is available after hours for visitors to the surrounding business district. Whole Foods Market offers 161 parking spaces underground for its customers, and Columbia St. Mary’s offers 306 above ground parking spaces for patients and visitors. COLUMBIA ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL WATER TOWER MEDICAL COMMONS CANCER CENTER

As part of Columbia St. Mary’s replacement and expansion project on the Lake Drive campus, HOK was selected to be the Architect of Record, with Kahler Slater as Associate Architect, to design a cancer center within the new Water Tower Medical Commons. The Cancer Center, which overlooks Lake Michigan, combined Columbia St. Mary’s nationally recognized cancer services staff, treatment and technology on Milwaukee’s east side. Columbia St. Mary’s was chosen as one of three Ascension Health hospitals nationally and the only health system in Wisconsin, by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a pilot site for NCI’s Community Cancer Centers Program. The goals of the pilot program were to bring the latest scientific advances and the highest level of innovative and integrated, multi-specialty care to a much larger population of cancer patients, especially those who are under served. MOUNT ELIZ ABETH HOSPITAL

HOK designed a new private hospital in Novena, Singapore. The vision for the project is a “hospital of the future� that meets the needs of patients and medical professionals with the latest technology and design innovations. The hospital will focus on cardiology, orthopedics and oncology specialties. The patient-focused elements provide a positive healing environment. The hospital has a hospitality feel with 100-percent private patient rooms and balconies on patient floors, as well as gardens and rooftop landscaping to enhance the inclusion of light and nature. The physician-centered elements include merging of inpatient and outpatient services with diagnostic and treatment to provide patients a continuum of care, medical offices organized as Centers of Excellence and traditional medical suites.
