Dear friends and travel leaders, Chances are, if you are perusing the pages of this catalog, you embrace a spirit of exploration. Did your wanderlust develop at an early age or later, perhaps on your first international adventure? That spirit spurred Giovanna Holbrook to embark on a mission to design travel programs that were both highly educational and affordable. Her experience leading a group of scientists on a pioneering voyage to the Galápagos grew into worldwide explorations; this next year, Holbrook Travel turns 45! This catalog, our most comprehensive ever, is intended to stir your curiosity and provide impetus for your travel planning. We’ve introduced new itineraries, like Tasmania & The Great Ocean Road (page 74) and Energy, Climate Change, and Geological Wonders of Iceland (page 66), while enhancing others by incorporating new places or activities within our longstanding programs to North America, Latin America, Africa, Asia and beyond. This year we also provide activity level ratings to help determine the best fit for your group. Holbrook works to anticipate your clients’ needs and provide travel programs that reflect your organization’s interests and values. Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large, forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. After buying the property, the once-endangered forest became a private, 500-acre rainforest reserve and one of the country’s first ecolodges, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve. The lodge is recognized by Costa Rica’s Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) program as a level three classification, a reflection of Selva Verde’s ongoing commitment to responsible practices and the preservation of natural resources for future generations. Selva Verde actively works with conservation partners, including the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community.

One of the most amazing phenomena in nature is the annual migration of millions of Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) southward from their breeding grounds in the United States and Canada to overwintering sites high in the mountains of southern Mexico. Hundreds of millions of Monarchs fly along the Gulf Coast, or across the Gulf of Mexico, to eventually reach the belt of high volcanic mountains which stretches across the southern end of the central Mexican plateau. At about a dozen isolated places within the high-altitude forests of this zone, Monarchs pass the winter in aggregations that can exceed 2 billion individual butterflies. Stand amid the fir-covered mountains and witness this awe-inspiring spectacle firsthand as the monarchs flutter, dip, and swoop overhead.

Lost Civilizations of Peru: Kuélap to Machu Picchu 12 DAYS | CALL FOR PRICING | Choose your dates | Best season to travel: APR - NOV CULTURE & HISTORY | ALSO CUSTOMIZABLE FOR: birding, ADVENTURE, NATURAL HISTORY, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Machu Picchu tops the list of “must-see places” for many travelers to Peru, and for good reason. The Inca citadel’s well-preserved ruins are arguably among the most spectacular on the continent. Meanwhile, Peru’s northern region is largely a still-hidden gem, where archaeological sites and cloud forests are waiting to be explored. This adventurous 12-day program takes you off the beaten path and introduces you to many facets of the country’s indigenous and colonial heritage. Examine the history of the Inca Empire as well as that of the Chachapoyas, a pre-Incan, Andes civilization known as the “Warriors of the Clouds.” Visit Machu Picchu, Cusco, and the Sacred Valley in the south, as well as lesser-known but equally impressive sites in the north, like Kuélap (nicknamed “the Machu Picchu of the North”) and Revash, remnants of the Chachapoyas.
