TAKE ACTION
Welcome to Holbrook Travel Holbrook Travel has been a pioneer in transforming young lives through education, immersion, and active engagement for more than 40 years. We pride ourselves on programs that offer in-depth experiential discovery, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections with local communities that bring the travel experience alive.
Why Holbrook? Holbrook supports the Girl Scout initiative to prepare girls to become active participants in their local and global communities. On our travel programs, troops can meet and engage with local Girl Scouts/Girl Guides in their destination, participate in hands-on activities, and immerse themselves in the nature and culture of their host country. Above all else, our programs can help girls to grow as individuals, discover new ways to work together, and gain practical skills while learning about the world around them.
How we support councils Planning an educational field expedition for your council or troop can seem like a challenge, but organizing one-of-akind experiences is our specialty. As you plan your travel program, we’ll be there at every step to handle all the field operations and provide in-country support, liability coverage, all-inclusive pricing, easy enrollment options, and more. 2
GALAPAGOS
Travel programs that follow the Girl Scout Promise Established as a womanowned business in 1974, Holbrook has a long history of offering travel experiences with a strong focus on natural science, culture, service learning, and STEM topics. We can help you design a trip that’s age- and interestappropriate and tailored to your desired mission and goals. After traveling with us, Girl Scouts come home with more than just souvenirs:
• While traveling, girls will have opportunities to earn various awards offered by Girl Scouts, adding to the insignia on their uniforms. • Through hands-on activities, girls will undergo physical and mental challenges together, fostering cooperative learning and critical-thinking skills. • Girl Scout Cadettes will be able to earn their LiA (Leadership in Action) Award by assisting the younger Scouts during the journey. • Lastly, any Girl Scout who is hoping to earn her Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award will discover and learn about issues in a foreign place, which could later assist her in identifying an issue in her own community to focus on for her project. 3
Supporting girls on their Journeys By its very nature, travel promotes cooperation, creates connections, challenges our worldview, and develops leadership skills. By incorporating relevant activities into your travel program, we can help support girls as they earn badges, go on Journeys, and work toward their Bronze, Silver, or Gold Awards. Below you’ll find sample activities that correlate to the different Girl Scout Journeys, including the Outdoor Journey. Plus, on the following page we’ve shown how you can incorporate activities in support of the STEM Journeys. Keep in mind these are just ideas to get you started; we’re happy to provide more inspiration and suggestions to meet your specific goals.
Sample activities:
“Outdoor Journey”
“It’s Your World— Change It!”
“It’s Your Planet— Love It!”
“It’s Your Story— Tell It!”
• Take guided hikes in different ecosystems and observe the connections between flora and fauna and their habitats.
• Profile an important figure from your destination and discuss the ways she positively influenced her country or community.
• Visit a geothermal power plant or hydroelectric dam to see how communities harness sustainable energy.
• Examine local media (magazines, newspapers, advertisements) in your destination and analyze the messages they portray about girls and women.
• Observe nocturnal mammals, birds, frogs, and insects on guided walks and discuss the adaptations that allow them to thrive at night. • Go tent camping in Iceland while exploring an array of geological features, national parks, and interactive learning centers. 4
• Visit a local nonprofit or NGO and talk to a representative about how they’re tackling a critical issue.
• Learn about nontraditional agricultural methods, such as hydroponic or urban organic farming.
• Identify a global topic you care about and connect it with changes you can make back home.
• Contribute to a citizen science or conservation service project that benefits the environment.
• Interact with members of a community arts cooperative where residents practice music, dance, theater, and the literary arts. • Create blog posts, video diaries, or photo journals to share and reflect on experiences in the field.
Taking on the world of STEM Presenting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics practices through hands-on learning is a vital part of preparing girls for the future. Our programs expand upon core STEM concepts and include experiences to engage Girl Scouts, spark their curiosity, and encourage them as they earn badges or pursue any of the STEM Journeys. In each of our 30+ destinations we can incorporate activities that inspire girls to investigate the world around them. SAMPLE STEM ACTIVITIES • Measure the pH of different water samples, predict whether aquatic life can live in the sample source, and suggest factors that influence the pH of each sample. Costa Rica
• Study plate tectonics and geothermal energy production amid geological formations like glaciers, volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and waterfalls. Iceland
• Examine the engineering principles behind the construction of the Panama Canal as you traverse the Miraflores Locks. Panama
• Assist with a conservation service project while learning about the effects of human activity on sensitive ecosystems. Cuba
• Come face-to-face with iconic wildlife and analyze the differences between species that have evolved to adapt to their distinct environments. Galápagos
• Explore the complex aqueduct system at Machu Picchu and consider how the engineering techniques of the ancient Inca Empire hold up today. Peru

What our leaders are saying We’ll fill your trip with experiences that will last a lifetime — but don’t just take our word for it. Here’s some of the feedback we’ve had from other leaders who have traveled with us recently. To read more, visit holbrooktravel.com/testimonials
“
I’ve had the opportunity to take girls to Hawaii, Guatemala, and Iceland through the Girl Scout destinations program and Holbrook Travel. All of these experiences were amazing for the girls and the chaperones. When I tell people I’ve taken girls to destinations like these, I always hear, ‘Wow, that must have been a lot of work for you to organize everything!’ Holbrook Travel arranges the airfare, accommodations, guides, food, just about everything. It’s great that the chaperones can just worry about making sure the girls are having the time of their lives, which, of course, they do. LESLEY ROBINSON Girl Scout Program Group Leader

I love the flexibility of Holbrook in planning trips. They always try to accommodate my wide range of interests and level of activity. I haven’t been on a trip with this many ‘bucket list’ items in years! Well planned and executed. The trip was absolutely wonderful and will be hard to beat! Travel programs that follow the Girl Scout Promise
Holbrook Travel supports the Girl Scout initiative to prepare girls to become active participants in their local and global communities. Established as a woman-owned business in 1974, Holbrook has a long history with a strong focus on natural science, culture, service learning, and STEM topics. Our programs are designed to build on Girl Scout Journey topics, empowering girls to make their world a better place, learn about environmental topics, and develop a strong sense of self.
