FOR STUDENTS & EDUCATORS 2017
Enriching lives through travel since 1974 800-451-7111 | holbrooktravel.com | travel@holbrooktravel.com
Dear friends, Who hasn’t heard a story about how a student’s first international travel experience changed their life? The chance to engage with a different culture, learn about the natural surroundings and participate in unique and transformative activities can have a memorable impact on a person’s development. My 1st trip to the Galápagos still resonates with me today. At Holbrook Travel, we believe that to travel is to learn; it’s a belief that has shaped our path for the last 40 years and one that continues to drive us as we look ahead to the future . When my mother, company founder Giovanna Holbrook, pioneered one of the first educational tours to the Galápagos Islands with a group of scientists and laypersons, they set out to explore a remote destination propelled by their desire for knowledge. Today, we continue her legacy by helping students explore the world through immersion, interaction, and hands-on learning. We strive to create experiences that are not only informative, but also transformative. In these pages you’ll find just a sample of the kinds of programs that have inspired educators and enlightened their students for so many years. We hope you’ll find something that piques your interest so that we can welcome and support you in the year ahead. With every good wish,
ANDRE A HOL B R O O K PRES ID E N T, HOL B R O O K T RAV E L

Sarapiquí, Costa Rica
Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve Owned and operated by Holbrook Travel, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve is your gateway into a magical world of towering Almendro trees, mantled howler monkeys, and Keel-billed Toucans. Located just two hours from San José, Selva Verde provides easy access to the wonders of the rainforest.
The Selva Verde Story In 1984, during the course of running an expedition in Costa Rica, Holbrook Travel’s founder, Giovanna Holbrook, came across a large forested property in the Sarapiquí region that was in danger of being timbered. The owners wished to sell the 500 acres of mostly old growth forest and had already begun cutting some of the trees for lumber. When Giovanna saw a 900-year-old tree lying on the ground, she realized that appreciating nature and sharing its wonders with others was no longer enough—she also had to play a part in protecting and caring for it. It took almost one year to raise the money, but by 1985 Giovanna was able to return to Costa Rica and buy the land. The once endangered forest became pioneering eco-lodge in Costa Rica, Selva Verde Lodge & Rainforest Reserve. 44

“
Selva Verde is a fabulous place and we have seen and learned so much. In just three days we have seen huge iguanas, an armadillo, three types of frog, two of them the poison dart variety, a keel-billed toucan, hummingbirds (precioso!), striped squirrels, many different types of butterfly, kiskadee birds, lizards, golden orb spiders and the type and variety of plant life too numerous to list. The colors, shapes and forms of these glorious plants are mind-blowing.

Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center
Poison Darrt Frog by Greg Basco
Supporting the local community The Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center was established in 1993 by Holbrook Travel and Selva Verde Lodge Founder Giovanna Holbrook and her friend and fellow pioneer Bertha Carter. As one of Costa Rica’s pioneering eco-lodges, Selva Verde is committed to a sustainable future — not only for the lodge, but for the people and wildlife that call the Sarapiquí home. Selva Verde actively works with conservation partners, including the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center, to promote conservation and environmental education throughout the local community. Funded in part by its ecotourism activities, the SCLC is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for mutual exchange between visitors and local people through cultural activities and service projects. SCLC’s projects, which are run by international volunteers and community members, include environmental education, rural tourism activities, English classes, community outreach, women’s groups, and scholarship funds for high school students. 47

GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey by Pelin Karaca
The unique flora and fauna of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands inspired Charles Darwin’s revolutionary studies on evolution during his visit to the archipelago in 1835 and continues to inspire travelers who visit these enchanting islands today.
PERU Peru was notably home to the Inca — an ancient civilization that thrived from the 12th century to 1532, when it was conquered by Francisco Pizarro. Best known for their mountain-top citadel, Machu Picchu, the Inca legacy was built by civilizations like the Chavin, Paracas, Nazca, Moche, and Wari who set the foundations for their Empire.

Iceland, India, Tanzania & Beyond ICELAND Viking heritage and the Icelandic language make Iceland an incredible classroom to study the unique Icelandic culture, while waterfalls, active volcanoes, massive glaciers, and vast uninhabited mountainous terrain make the land of fire and ice perfect for geological studies.
INDIA Witness religious traditions on the banks of the River Ganges, enjoy the astounding bustle of India’s metropolitan areas, or simply wander the impressive grounds of the Taj Mahal. Natural wealth abounds in India, as well. The country’s government is working to preserve species, such as wild tigers, and habitats such as the diminishing tropical forest of the north.
TANZANIA The roots of human history were discovered at Olduvai Gorge when the earliest known specimens of the human genus, Homo habilis, was found here. Africa’s big game species such as lions, elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo and leopard can be seen in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. For the discerning traveler, Tanzania captivates the senses, engages the mind, and inspires the spirit.

About Holbrook
“
Everything was absolutely amazing. Even though we only had one week, it felt as though we accomplished so much and really saw the Belize cultures and history.
“
I felt like we didn’t have any stress, that Holbrook handled everything. It was the least stressful trip I’ve ever taken – a true learning vacation.

This trip was a very valuable use of time. I got to see two very interesting cities, and not only did I learn some science about the area, I got to learn its history. The lodge was beautiful, and all the activities were fun.

This was the best Costa Rica trip ever! The trip was so wonderful that when we boarded the plane to go home, several cried most of the way back as they did not want to leave! As always - Holbrook is simply the best! — DR. JUDITH DYKES-HOFFMANN Texas Lutheran University Costa Rica expedition
