Committed to environment and society Natural resources are a precious commodity Our products are dependent on quarrying. The manufacturing of cement requires substantial amounts of energy. EfďŹ cient use of natural resources, aimed among other things at reducing CO2 emissions, is a cornerstone of our business policy. Improving our energy efďŹ ciency, recycling waste, and replacing clinker with other mineral binders are the main focus of our efforts in this area. Alternative fuels and raw materials have a future Holcim is conďŹ dent that the use of alternative fuels and raw materials represents an active contribution to sustainable development. Holcim in China Holcim's history in China China is the world's largest cement market. A strong presence in China is therefore of critical importance to the Group. Holcim's involvement in the Chinese cement industry commenced over 20 years ago with the technical know-how of our industry consultants being utilized by local cement producers. In 1995, Holcim became a shareholder in Suzhou Golden Cat Cement and in the same year it also set up a Representative Office in Beijing. Four years later, Holcim took a strategic investment in Huaxin Cement located in Hubei province, central China and later sold its shares in Golden Cat to Huaxin. The status quo Huaxin's steady growth has positioned the company firmly in the top league of Chinese cement enterprises. In 2008, Holcim was given the opportunity to raise its participation significantly through means of a private placement, making Holcim the largest shareholder in Huaxin Cement. The former Representative Office in Beijing has been replaced by "Holcim Management Services (China) Ltd.", an entity set up to support the

Holcim-Huaxin relationship . This sound relationship, built on mutual trust and respect, has laid a strong foundation for more and even closer cooperation in the future. Outlook China is of great importance to Holcim and our passion for and commitment to China is continually growing. We are very proud of our partnership with Huaxin. Holcim's fundamental belief worldwide is to achieve success by supporting our local partners. Among other things, we are working with Huaxin on issues of clean production, environmental protection, waste co-processing, energy efficiency, and corporate social responsibility. At the same time, we cooperate with various government and industry bodies on a range of topics where Holcim's international experience may add value to the Chinese cement industry at large. Holcim is also an active member of the CBCSD (China Business Council for Sustainable Development) and the EUCCC (European Chamber of Commerce in China).

Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction Goals of the Foundation The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction promotes innovative approaches to sustainable construction. The objective is to encourage sustainable responses to the technological, environmental, socioeconomic and cultural issues affecting building and construction through a range of initiatives. "Target Issues" for sustainable construction The Holcim Foundation and its partner universities have identiďŹ ed a set of ďŹ ve "target issues", which serve as the basis for any activity the Foundation supports. These issues are: innovation at the forefront of sustainable construction, highest ethical standards that support

social equity, a sensible use and management of natural resources, economic feasibility and a high standard of architectural quality. Holcim Awards and Holcim Forum The Holcim Awards are an international competition for future-oriented and tangible sustainable construction projects. The competition awards prize money of USD 2 million per three-year cycle. The Holcim Forum is also held every three years and is a series of symposiums for academia and practitioners to encourage discourse on the future of the built environment.
