Engineered for men who don’t need a co-pilot.
Spitfi re Chronograph. Ref. 3878: The skies teem with all kinds of fascinating things. But few of them have captured the world’s imagination like the Spitfire, of which 20,351 were built, making it the most-produced aeroplane in Great Britain’s history. Head designer Reginald Mitchell designed a technical and aerodynamic masterpiece with a huge wing area that allowed the aircraft to fl y very tight curves with unmatched manoeuvrability. The Spitfire from IWC is no less elegant. The 89365 calibre, manufactured in IWC’s own workshops, testifi es to the same outstanding engineering skills. The austere, technical feel of the dial and the elaborately machined surfaces of the case on the Spitfire from Schaffhausen evoke associations with its airborne namesake. Just as well that its propellers rotate a good deal more slowly. And a whole lot more quietly. IWC. Engineered for men.

Edox Cape Horne 5 Minute Repeater
ELEGANCE AND PRECISION… MADE FOR CHAMPIONS From its humble beginnings, Edox has produced leading technology high precision timepieces with ingenuity and a meticulous attention to detail, enabling this peculiar Swiss brand to become over time a leader in the manufacture of contemporary and sports watches The existence of this brand as we know it all began with a true love story, in 1883, when an exceptionally gifted watchmaker by the name Christian Rufli Flury in Grenchen, Switzerland, specially designed a pocket watch for his beloved wife Pauline on her 25th birthday. Touched and impressed by her husband’s talents, she convinced him to found his own watch making company in Biel. The next year (1884), Christian Rufli Flury launched his watch making enterprise in Biel-Bienne, a city famous for its well educated watch makers. He named the company “Edox” which means “the hour” in ancient greek. A few years later, the hourglass was officially used as a symbol of Edox and since then, this logo has adorned all Edox watches to this day. After the death of its founder in 1921, Edox was taken over by Robert Kaufmann-Hug who realized that wristwatches were more practical than pocket watches. His decision to gradually
30
phase out pocket watch production marked a turning point in Swiss watch making history. The diligence of Edox for producing innovative, highly precise watches was recognized in 1966 when the company became the official time keeper of the famous Vuelta bicycle race in Aragon, Spain. This marked the beginning of many more life changing partnerships. In 1968, the brand continued its prominence as an official timekeeper in the world of sports when Edox became the official timekeeper of the Olympics. In the face of the Swiss watch making crisis in the early 80s, Victor Strambini took over Edox and moved the company to Le Genevez, in the heart of the Swiss Jura Mountains. Edox’s passion for technical perfection quite naturally led the company into the world of nautical sports, initially involving luxury boats and later powerboats. In 2006, Edox became the official timekeeper of the Class 1 Championship, the
formula 1 of the seas. Edox became the first watch making brand to make a substantial and long term commitment to motorized water sports. Edox became further involved in sports in 2008 by becoming the official timekeeper of the famous Dubai International Marine club (DIMC) and in 2010, the official timekeeper of the pretigious World Rally Championship.

CLASS AND ALLURE Erard once theorized time as an endless fluid which leaves its mark like a signature. For nearly a century now the Louis Erard brand has been crafted around that savvy philosophy During a fishing trip with his grandson in 1956, Louis Erard told the little lad: “Time is like the course of the river: it never runs backwards and it flows ceaselessly. The water is here but it’s already down there as well.” That poetic insight; that time is an endless fluid, has for generations been the perfect expression of the craft and technology behind the elite set of Louis Erard watches. It was the inception of the Spirit of Time. Beyond its distinctive time concept which wraps around its stylishly-crafted watches, the Louis Erard brand and its luxury collections today symbolize the ideal choice for those who love everything and anything classic.

Heritage Collection: Launched in 2003, the Heritage collection has become a Louis Erard bestseller. Such success can be clearly attributed to a combination of classism, unpretentious discretion of its design, and fine mechanics. Emotion Collection: An encounter between the active, supremely elegant woman and fine, authentic mechanics. Subtle, elegant and eternal when crafted in 18 carat rose gold and paved with diamonds. This collection encapsulates the perfect union between watch making and femininity. La CarRee Collection: Supreme elegance for the modern woman. It is a blend of immeasurable refinement with a variety of finishing to meet every kind of taste. Romance Collection: The new Louis Erard first ever quartz line, Romance, carries all the aesthetic codes that have forged the success of the Louis Erard brand. And the values resonate in each of the 36 pieces of the collection: classism, elegance, sobriety, because all women are not hard-core mechanics.

Africa
has been described as the last frontier. According to Mckinsey & Company, Africa is the second fastest growing region with a growth rate of about 5% and a GDP of approximately $1.67 trillion.
By 2035, Africa will have
the largest workforce in the world, more than China or India. It is estimated that Africa should have over 400 million people within the middle class by 2020. Interspersed with this is a thriving entrepreneurial class made up of different businesses expanding frontiers and breaking boundaries both within and outside Africa.
From Orascom to Dangote to SAB Miller,
success stories of African businesses abound. In order to accurately capture these stories, Ventures Africa was formed.

Icare’s Dream The economic crisis has spared nobody, let alone the field of aviation. The latter, however, copes with it and even proposes some novelties. So the huge GenevaPalexpo surface area has been trodden, once again, by the aviation world. With

< Dassault Falcon 7X Present in more than 70 countries on the five continents, Dassault Aviation is one of the world aeronautic leaders. About 2000 Falcons have been sold in more than 65 countries since the release of the first Falcon 20 in 1963. Dassault introduced this year its new jewellery, “the Falcon 7X,” at the EBACE Show. With a new cabin interior layout and flight radius of 11’000 km (5950 nm), this program is the outcome of the close collaboration between Dassault and Designworks USA, a design-specialized subsidia-
ry of BMW Group. In a static exhibition in the Geneva Airport, the Falcon 7X (serial number 44) helped the development of this new inboard that will be available as an extra with the upcoming deliveries starting in the first quarter of the year 2011. The Falcon 7X has the biggest autonomy of flight of all the Dassault business jets. A particular attention has been brought to the improvement of the comfort in cabin for flights of more than 13 hours. The launch of 7X in 2007 provided the brand with a new benchmark in
business aviation: A cabin 10% bigger than the one of the previous Falcon and a luminous and large space including 28 windows. The Falcon 7X ‘s inboard shows several curves and a carpet with an arched pattern, all in one piece from the front to the back, visually elongating the cabin’s length. The concave bulkheads give an effect of volume while the harmonious curves of the galley and main cabin accentuate the lines’ fluidity. The lighting of the cabin combines the luminous strip boards and neon lights for mood
lighting directed both upwards and downwards. The combination of the new lighting and the increased contrast between the carpet, partitions and ceiling furniture offers a sensation of openness, space and comfort, giving birth thus to a cabin in which functionality takes nothing away from elegance.

Hondajet So far reserved for the American market, the Hondajet backlog is henceforth open to the European customers. The first future owner is already known: the F1 pilot, Jenson Button, who has treated himself to two aircrafts for his new business aviation company. With the first deliveries maintained for 2010, the Japanese aircraft manufacturer presented a new version of the jet’s inboard. Definitely ergonomic and modern, the
50
cabin design is emphasized by a set of inserts in perfectly-incorporated chromium and precious wood. As to the outboard, the aircraft always distinguishes itself from competition with its bicoloured "body" and its two jet engines installed right above the wings.

Airbus A380 Prestige For those who have nothing to do with the crisis and feel uncomfortable in a narrow Falcon 7X or Lineage 1000, Airbus proposes the A380 Prestige. Premium declension of the basic version (A380-800) of the famous long-range airliner, the aircraft naturally pockets the title of the world’s the largest private jet. Propelled by four Rolls-Royce Trent 900reactors, it possesses an impressive autonomy of 18’000 km.
The inboard accommodation is more often conceived according to the wealthy and happy purchasers’ wishes. The latest example is that of Edèse Doret Industrial Design, the company that has been selected to realise one of these aircrafts’ inboard. The result of this personalization is as astonishing as its price: 150 millions $, to be, of course, added to the 325 million $, the price of the aircraft. When we fall in love…

Lineage 1000 Embraer Few weeks ago in São José dos Campos, Brasil, Embraer handed the very first Lineage 1000 business jet over to Aamer Abdul Jalil Al Fahim, of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The aircraft, which will be operated in the name of its owner by Prestige Jet, also of Abu Dhabi, made its first public appearance in EBACE. The maximum range of the Lineage 1000, originally intended to reach 4200 nautical miles with 8 passengers, or 4350 with 4 passengers, has been increased to 4400 with 8 passengers and 4500 with 4 passengers. “I am convinced that the Lineage 1000 will play an important role in the upcoming achievement and progress of our business everywhere,” Aamer Abdul Jalil Al Fahim points out. The Lineage 1000, launched 3 years ago in the 2006 EBACE, is the largest of all the 6 Embraer business jets. According to its configuration, it can accommodate up to 19 passengers in a total volume of 115 m3. The aircraft deck is set on the Embraer 190 and its base price is 43 million US dollars.

LISA Airplanes: Akoya A very successful association between LISA Airplanes and Danish Yacht was introduced at EBACE. LISA Airplanes, which was created in 2004, constructs and commercialises pleasure aircrafts combining innovation and performance. Comfortable and with a studied design, the aircrafts offer a sensation of liberty and claim to be environmentally friendly. The association between the aeronautic constructor and the boat manufacturer will offer an
opportunity to meet midway between sky and sea with the Dayboat. This new 38-meter-long yacht, drawn by Espen Oeino and constructed by Danish Yacht, is concentrated technology. Adding to its being aesthetic, it distinctly consumes less fuel than its fellow yachts having the same size thanks to its structure entirely made of carbon. Moreover, it is equipped with of a submersible platform in the back, perfectly adapted to hold an Akoya aboard. With an original
approach to the world of aviation, these two constructors suggest a new “private aircraft-carrier” concept offering their potential customers an incomparable liberty of movement. With a Multi-Access system, the Akoya is the only aircraft capable of landing even on snow and also of alighting thanks to its two hydrofoils that bring it agility, comfort and security. As to snow, the aircraft is equipped with skis that are retractable in flight. In addition to these innovations, the Akoya has a Ri&Flex Wing system patented in 2003 by USA Airplanes. The latter combines a rigid wing in carbon and a foil flap in very resistant synthetic fabrics. The device allows the aircraft to achieve short landings and takeoffs (on 100 ms soil) as well as better performances in coasting flight. Associated to a body with a wind tunnel studied design, the Ri&Flex Wing offers the Akoya a total stability even under large wind pressure guaranteeing therefore the passengers’ safety. Besides, the system allows a consumption of five liters per 100 km of economic cruise speed, taking account of sustainable development. The aircraft is propelled by a 100-horse 9125 Rotax motor allowing it to perform 300 km/h dash speeds and granting it a maximum autonomy of 1300 km. Thanks to the wing movement system, this aircraft can be embarked on board of a yacht to become then the most exclusive Tender of the market!

Pilatus PC-12 NG In the current economic context, business turboprops are having the wind in their sail. Not only are they more cost effective as to their price and maintenance than the jets, but they also have the advantage of landing on very much shorter runways and can, therefore, reach about 2000 airports and airfields in Europe versus 600 for jets. Leader in this category, the Swiss constructor Pilatus has recently unveiled a new
Eurocopter The first world helicopter manufacturer asserts its engagement in favour of business aviation. On the occasion of the 2009 EBACE Show, the group presented the EC145 Stylence helicopter to make, therefore, its first appearance in the market. “The introduction of the EC145 Stylence helicopter in the 2009 EBACE Show,” Dominic Orbec, Vice-President in Charge of Commercial Development, declares, “confirms all the confidence we have in the business aviation market in spite of the current economic recession, as well as in Eurocopter’s capacity of continuously adapting itself to the consistent evolution of its customers’ needs.” Time-gain is businessmen’s main concern. With a complete elevenhelicopter collection, ranging from the EC120 to the EC225 and having
54
the capacity to take 4-19 passengers on board, Eurocopter has all the assets to perfectly answer its business customers’ demands. The EC145 Stylence, the last-born of the Stylence family, is the representation of style and silence marrying ergonomics with technology. It was conceptualised in such a way that every businessman would feel in a real office with all the necessary technologies inboard: telephony, Internet and electronic mail service. The EC145 is the fifth Eurocopter helicopter to join the Stylence collection of the EC120, EC130, AS350 B2/B3 and AS 355 NP. Since its recent launch to the market, five copies of the EC145 Stylence have been sold in the world (in Germany, Brazil, France, India and Luxembourg).
declension of its bestseller, the PC 12. Baptized PC 12 NG, for Next Generation, it is equipped with a Pratt&Whitney Canada Pt-6A turbine which is 15% more powerful than the basic one and consumes less fuel. But the real spectacle is in the cockpit with a BMW Designworks USA-signed inboard and a new built-in avionics equipped with four LCD screens. 3.8 million $ is the price of the basic version.

The New Big Luxury Spenders! Could it be? Men now spend more than women?
T
he Men’s luxury goods market in the last few years has gone from under-served to unstoppable – and yes, it’s outperforming the women’s market, and no where do we see this more evident than in Nigeria. The Masculinisation of luxury is a global phenomenon driven by major brands placing great attention and resources on this fast growing segment. In turn, retailers are now shuffling their real estate and dedicating more space to men’s offerings. Not so surprising considering the global men’s luxury market is growing at 9 to 10 percent annually versus 7 to 8 percent for the women’s segment.
72
STYLE
PPR, the giant luxury French group, has immediately played its hand by buying the famous Italian suit and sportswear maker, Brioni, in November 2011 and immediately announced its plan to expand and renew the Brioni range as well as new flagship openings in Europe, America, China, Middle East and Africa. Also in 2011, Brioni partnered with the Nigerian Luxury retailer, Zakaa, to open its first door in Nigeria with plans to enter other multi door locations before launching a mono boutique. The boutiques will showcase both the ready-towear collection and the ultra luxury made-to-measure bespoke services with prices competing favourably with those attainable in other Brioni Boutiques. Taking advantage of this growing requirement for bespoke services, several MTM tailors from reknowned brands including Brioni propose to visit Nigeria three times a year and tailor-made suits, shirts and shoes will take 12 weeks to make. The new big luxury spenders understand that differentiation is the key to achieve this true luxury which
comes at a price. Men now are clearly outspending women in all sectors of the luxury market with the exception of cosmetics, even here the growth of the male cosmetic segment is outpacing that of women. In Nigeria, this growth is attributed to the dominance of male spending where men account for over three quarters of all luxury sales, be it cars, watches, lifestyle or fashion. Though there are signs that women are beginning to slowly compete. The wide difference between men and women spending habits in Nigeria might also be in part due to the popular giftgiving culture of the society. Whilst this does not exclude women, it is undoubtedly dominated by men. Globally, men are “the new luxury big spenders, but in Nigeria they always have been and will continue to be in the near future, as the Nigerian luxury retail environment continues to grow, fast outpacing that of the European luxury market.

INNOVATIONS Steadfast in its journey to remain in the lead, Ulysse Nardin strides forward, looking to its own universe -its leadership, master craftmanship and dedication to the art of creating mechanical timepieces- to plot its course
Almost 20 years after the completion of the astronomical “trilogy of time” – a true horological masterpiece, UlysseNardin has once again entered the world of the celestial bodies. The concept of the Moonstruck focuses on the system of Sun, Earth, and Moon, concentrating on the scientifically accurate depiction of the moon phase and the global influence of lunar and solar gravitation, which results in tidal movements. This timepiece is also equipped with a quick – setting mechanism to adjust the pointer calendar and one to adjust the hour hand back and forth to any desired time zone, making this watch the perfect travel companion. The Moonstruck is available in either 18 carat rose gold or pristive platinum casing.
STROKE OF GENIUS: THE SCIENCE AND SPIRIT BEHIND AWARD-WINNING WATCHMAKER ULYSSE NARDIN Since the manufacturer’s earliest days more than 166 years ago when its founder, Ulysse Nardin, began making marine chronometers in a mountainous location in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, the watchmaking powerhouse has continually proved that challenges present vast opportunities worthy of exploration. It is these explorations that have resulted in Ulysse Nardin’s unprecedented inventions in horology. Science, innovation and imagination are its navigating forces, and technological advancement combined with exemplary artisanship is its beacon. Leading the world watchmaking community in unrivaled developments, Ulysse Nardin continues its passionate spirit of invention. Derived from this spirit are great accomplishments, one being independence – an autonomy from other manufactures – that few manufactures can attest to. This desire for independence was ignited when two masterminds came together: Rolf W. Schnyder and Dr. Ludwig Oechslin. Since, Ulysse Nardin has been the recipient of 4,300plus awards in watchmaking – 18 of them gold medals – and has received the greatest number of patents in mechanical watchmaking. Ulysse Nardin was honored by Revolution magazine with its prestigious “New Technology” award for InnoVision, a spectacular watch that represented the groundbreaking use of silicium, among ten additional technical feats. This creation gives a nod to Ulysse Nardin’s FREAK, one of the cleverest timepieces ever created and the first to use silicon. Introducing Ulysse Nardin’s Dual Ulysse Escapement in silicium, the Freak was an intriguing success. Ultra minimal in appearance and boasting no true case, crown or hands with the movement pivoted to indicate time, the Freak showcased Ulysse Nardin’s scientific knowledge and progressive engineering like no other. It was awarded the “Innovation Prize”, along with the Genghis Khan, GMT +- Perpetual and the Sonata.
Other landmark achievements by Ulysse Nardin include Oechslin’s completion of the Trilogy of Time, featuring the Astrolabium, the Planetarium and the Tellurium. And, in 2009, Oechslin returned to the cosmos for inspiration and revealed the Moonstruck, which concentrates on the moon and its effects on the earth. Fast forward to 2012 and Ulysse Nardin expands its roster of breakthroughs with the Ulysse Nardin Caliber 118, the manufacture’s self-winding base caliber conceived and executed entirely in-house, and now offered in the Marine Chronometer Manufacture. This caliber continues the advancement of Ulysse Nardin’s use of new materials and techniques; it features a standard anchor escapement that is produced using DIAMonSil, Ulysse Nardin’s revolutionary alliance of diamond and silicon, and a furthering of its joint venture with microparts technology company Sigatec. Steadfast in its journey to remain in the lead, Ulysse Nardin looks to its own universe to plot its course. Steering the Ulysse Nardin spirit of innovation and independence into new, unchartered territory is Chai Schnyder, president of the Board of Directors, CEO Patrik P. Hoffmann and the expertly skilled and dedicated Ulysse Nardin team. At its Switzerlandbased headquarters, true invention and design meet to form the most remarkable timepieces of today and tomorrow.

The Freak is the brainchild of Dr. Ludwig Oechslin, as interpreted and conceived by Ulysse Nardin's research and production team. In contrast to mystery clocks of the past, the Freak is an open secret, all parts pivot and move in total transparency. The Freak 28'800 V/h is a 7-day Carrousel Tourbillon, without hands, dial or crown. We call it the Freak 28'800 V/h because everything in this movement is so radically different that the concept of the movement and the case had to be rethought.
The all iconic Freak, The anniversary Calibre, The Moonstruck and in 2010 The Freak Diavolo - an exceptional timepiece illustrating Ulysse Nardin’s perfection of the application of new technology such as photolithography,, the use of the best and latest developed materials like sillcium and LIGA nickel at core locations, advancement in power and accuracy of the tourbillion carrousel (developed entirely in-house), and the addition of a flying tourbillion indicating the seconds.
Collection available at ZAKAA BOUTIQUE Transcorp Hilton Abuja Tel: +234 9 291 1450
Pointedly punctual leaders are set for arrival with the Executive Dual time. Whether jetting across the country or crossing hemispheres, a meeting is sure not to be missed, for time is a precious commodity. The Executive dual time comprises of a self-winding movement with unique time zone quick setting and permanent home time display.
The Royal blue tourbillion provides blue colored sapphire crystals used as the main plate as well as the bridges for movements. The tourbillion cage appears to float in place offering a mystical look. Hidden below the bezel, which you can get in polished stainless steel or encrusted with sapphires and diamonds, is a dial. Turn the bezel and all the wheels inside the watch seem to come to life, offering you a stunning piece of work that lives up to its name.
Sporty, rugged and fashion forward, the marine collection combines the classic aesthetics and power reserve indicator of the marine chronometer with the features most sought after in a diver watch.
BLUE TORO The Ulysse Nardin GMT perpetual collection represents one of the worlds most functional and innovative time piece in the history of complicated time pieces. Ulysse Nardin's GMT perpetual remains the first perpetual watch allowing the user to adjust all of its calendar displays with a one style crown.
Some Ladies are born to lead while others follow. Ulysse Nardin Lady watches represents the perfect fusion of style and substance for today’s women who lead or will become leaders.

Montegrappa Muhammed Ali Limited Edition Fountain Pen
Montegrappa
MUHAMMED ALI The Montegrappa icons tribute to Muhammed Ali Limited Edition addresses key elements in Ali’s life. This iconic pen has been selected according to special dates; 1942 is the year of his birth; He fought 61 fights, he won 56; He successfully won 37 games by knockout. Guided by these figures, Montegrappa issued 1942 fountain pens and 1942 roller balls in resin and sterling silver trims, 61 fountain pens with solid gold trims and 56 roller balls with solid gold trims. However, this Montegrappa Muhammed Ali Knockout pen is named “the champion”. It is finished in white pearlised resin with a black strip running its length. The barrel bears the colors of his boxing shorts.
104
The end of the barrel completes the look with two circumferential black strips, as found at the tops of his socks. The pocket clip, terminated with the Montegrappa rolling end-piece, takes the shape of the stitching on Ali’s boxing gloves. The cap’s profile follow the arc of a speed bag, while the end of the cap is shaped in the cushion form of “the world championship’’ diamond encrusted ring worn by Ali and his corner team. Lastly the cap features the great mans signature, in black with the legend “THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME” incorporated into the cap top.

turbine revolution Passion, know-how, and enthusiasm are the key words that have inspired the prestigious Swiss watch brand, Perrelet, inventors of the automatic movement, in manufacturing a variety of exclusive timepieces since 1777. As heir to an invention that today vibrates in every automatic watch, Perrelet holds the movement at the heart of its priorities. Each model conveys the essence of tradition and luxury watchmaking with a fine blend of contemporary features and technologies. Perrelet today still produces self-winding watches based on the principles invented by Abraham Louis Perrelet.
Perrelet as a brand has achieved great success in recent years with release of the TURBINE, showing off impeccable creativity, never ending quest for excellence and attention to detail. An adaptation of the double rotor, the Turbine is truly a spectators magic. Inspired by the field of aeronautics, the dial of this fascinating timepiece is fitted with 12 titanium blades cov-
bold and gold Having a gem for lovers of good taste and watch connoisseurs, Perrelet recently introduced the Turbine XL Gold. With the XL Gold, Perrelet is lending a touch of chic to its provocative 50mm diameter creation. Carved in solid rose gold, this version of the Turbine XL is a mighty watch that never fails to impress. This 77-piece limited edition full of eccentricity and elegance is a true collector’s masterpiece.

ering the whole of the dial, which slips beneath a black bezel, marked with luminous numbers. On the under-dial, luminous markers accentuate the optical effect, making the impact of this model all the more sensational, and this is reinforced by the dissociation of the two rotors. The dial is covered with an antireflective sapphire glass giving its owner an uninterrupted view of this beautiful creation. Paying meticulous attention to detail, the case of the Perrelet Turbine adopts some aeronautical codes: a 44mm concave shaped case with dynamic fluid lines meant to look like a jet engine and a crown which is integrated with the case, however its functionality remains guaranteed by a latch, which in the open position allows winding and time setting of the watch. On the reverse side, a sapphire crystal showcases the beautifully decorated P-181 movement of the Turbine. A black rubber strap with its folding clasp completes the ensemble, ensuring its owners complete comfort. Bold, intuitive and with its distinctive style, the modified Turbine XL is free to fully assume its role in a bigger 50mm case, perfect for lovers of all things big, bold, and beautiful.
The Turbine special edition collection comprises of really fun and eccentric pieces such as the Turbine America, Turbine Poker, Turbine Toxic, Turbine Erotic, Turbine Spit-fire, and Turbine Dragon. Each watch in the special edition has its own unique theme, expressing the exceptional creativity of the perrelet brand. Shades of blueberry, blackberry and lemon yellow, the turbine XS Taste models shine in a palette of trendy colours featured in this hot summer collection (above). They evoke sun-ripe fruits twirling at the heart of a fresh and glamorous ladies’ line. Fabulously adorned, the turbines of the double rotor echo the summery colours in their bezels rimmed with sapphires, topazes, amethysts, and citrines. The sun-ray patterned dial base of this beautiful timepiece is set with 72 brilliant cut diamonds beneath the turbine and 60 baguette cut precious stones cover the stainless steel bezel. These models are equipped with white satin straps, completing the feel of elegance to this collection.

The history of Anselmo Grimoldi as master goldsmith begins in the laboratory of famed Italian gold master, who conveyed his experience and passion for jewellery to the young apprentice Anselmo. Thanks to his creative spirit and passion for fine jewellery and timepieces, Anselmo Grimoldi, together with his beloved wife, Rosanna, have spent a lot of time challenging new trends in the conservative world of jewellery. Anselmo and Rosanna bravely carried on watch making and jewellery production, as time passes, with the enthusiastic collaboration of their children, Grimoldi Milano has gained a cornerstone in the international market. Anselmo’s rich experience of collecting and dealing precious timepieces, and his wonderful mastery of luxury jewellery results in the creation of a fine and chic line of watches: San Babila collection. Together with skilled craftsmen, Anselmo Grimoldi presents San Babila collection: an extraordinary combination of tradition, modernism, design and luxury. Pay attention to the particulars of San Babila: the case is rounded on the angles and embraces the wrist. The side wave lines, and the name so particularly Milanese are typical of Grimoldi creations. It is possible to find San Babila either with classic Grimoldi dials, or with two special styles: Liberty style dial, and Riccio style dial, in which artistic fantasy of Anselmo has given life to a rich Baroque curve that decorates the hour indexes. Its exquisite automatic movement gives this precious timepiece not only the name of a “beautiful watch” but the fame of a “beautiful and powerful watch”.

FOCUS
SOPHISTICATION AND TIMELESS DESIGN
IWC: ENGINEERED FOR MEN LOVED BY WOMEN
Portuguese Grand Complication
Since 1868, IWC has developed a collection of some of the world’s most fascinating wristwatches. A combination of innovation and outstanding craftsmanship, IWC continues to astonish watch lovers the world over with these spectacles of true haute horlogerie. The renowned Swiss watch brand, IWC has built and earned a reputation as one of the world’s finest manufacturers of Swiss watches. These astonishing watches look back on a long rich tradition. They attest the innovation of the engineers in Schaffhausen through four generations and embrace the broad range of the company’s watchmaking expertise; from robust watches for everyday use to professional sports watches and the complexities of Swiss watchmaking at its finest. This great heritage began in the 1860s when a young American engineer and leading watchmaker, Florentine Ariosto Jones from Boston, decided to journey across the Atlantic to Switzerland, where wages were comparatively low. His plan was to combine the outstanding craftsmanship of the Swiss with all the excellence of the modern American engineering

technology and his pioneering spirit to manufacture high quality pocket watches for the American market. In 1868, he established the International Watch Co (IWC) in Schaffhausen, North Western Switzerland. The company’s excellent reputation was established right from the start with the very first Jones Calibre named after its founder. In 1885, IWC demonstrated its innovative spirit in the Pallweber pocket watches, with their revolutionary digital display for hours and minutes. Since 2000, IWC has been part of the Richemonte group and continues to stay true to its original design of classic simplicity and contemporary nature being a statement of the brand.

TRAIL BLAZING INNOVATION Being the only watch manufacturer in eastern Switzerland, IWC has shown exceptional creativity judging from their watch families, ranging from the simple classic to striking complications and statement watches with an edge. Each family of IWC watches are undoubtedly unique, having a theme and a rich history, making these pieces all the more fascinating. The flawless craftsmanship and enduring quality of the Portuguese family is re-enforced in the Portuguese Grande Complication (left), leaving a permanent impression in the world of Haute Horlogerie. This exquisite piece unites a wealth of the most outstanding achievements in watchmaking, including a perpetual calendar mechanically programmed until 2499, as well as a perpetual moon phase display and a chronograph. This ingenious watch is for the core watch enthusiast, assembled in a solid 45mm 18carat rose gold case with a strap made of genuine alligator leather and is stitched with an 18 carat rose gold thread giving this model a unique appearance. A limited edition of 100 watches a year, the Portuguese Grande Complication speaks exclusivity and ground-breaking innovation.
In a deeper appreciation of Leonardo Da Vinci’s passion for precise measurement of time, IWC introduced yet another fascinating piece to the Da Vinci family which is simply “ahead of its time”. One hundred and twenty five years after the Pallweber, the first digital watch in IWC history, they unveiled the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar digital date month with a perpetual calendar, a digital date display and for the first time ever, the month in large digits. The digital displays of this magnificent timepiece makes not just every day, but also every month, into a large significant event. Its fly-back chronograph sets the standard, and its 68 hour power reserve adds a final touch of brilliance to fine mechanics. Housed in a tonneau shaped case carved from polished 18 carat rose gold and its elegant brown alligator strap, this piece is totally breath-taking. The Portofino 8 Days Hand Wound is yet another astounding creation from the workshops of IWC Schaffhausen. Being the flagship watch of the Portofino line, this timepiece stands for elegance, class and simplicity, but with a little edge. The newly developed IWC – manufactured 59210 calibre movement
will run precisely for 8 days, before it automatically stops. The power remaining can be read off on a power reserve display beautifully crafted on a black sunray dial. Other features include a small second at 6 o’clock and a date display at 3 o’clock. This fascinating movement is housed in a 45mm 18 carat rose gold case, pretty big for a Portofino, but still maintains that classic look, and its open caseback exhibits the beautifully crafted hand wound movement and the IWC Probus Scafusia sign of quality. Affixed to the timepiece is an alligator leather strap made by Santoni, a reputable Italian brand known for their high quality leather shoes, making this piece all the more elegant.
The Aquatimer Family: Sporty with an edge, the aquatimer have a collection of spectacular pieces with high end functions for professional water sports and also for everyday wear. IWC have done amazinly well with this series, reminding us of their passion for innovation and technical inventiveness.
The Ingenieur Family represent a simple function of accurately telling the time(and on some models the date) in a robust and classic design. The watches in this series are renowned for extreme resistance to shock and change of temperature. Some watches in the Ingenieur Family are: The Ingenieur Chronograph, the Ingenieur Automatic Mission Earth, and the Ingenieur Double Chronoraph
Portofino 8 Days Hand wound
Other families of the IWC brand are The Pilot Family: For over seventy years, the IWC Pilot watches from Schaffhausen have been one of watchmaking’s greatest achievements.. The watches in this family are among the most desired mens watches all over the world, owing not just to their functionality and durability, but also to their luxurious and elegant appearance. Some watches in this family include; The Big Pilot Chronograph Top Gun, Big Pilot Perpetual Top Gun, and The Pilots Watch Double Chronograph.

Personality
harAld buben
His clients are the rich and famous of the world. His private passion is Africa. Austrian businessman Harald Buben is a traveller who crosses borders. In 1995 he founded luxury company Buben & Zörweg together with his childhood friend Christian Zorweg out of a garage in their Austrian hometown, the pictoresque ski resort of Schladming.
I
nitially producing packages for watch companies like Chronowiss and Fabergé, they quickly diversified to electronic watchwinders and luxury safes under their own name. Nowadays, Buben & Zörweg is a connoisseurs’ brand for Objects of Time® and tourbillon clocks, sometimes costing several hundred thousand US$ and complete safe rooms, made to measure for collectors of watches, wine, art and cigars. Indeed Harald Buben has a special relationship with the concept of safety. He routinely goes to countries with a high travel warning, sometimes for business and often for pleasure. “Overland driving through difficult territories and terrains gives me the ultimate kick” admits 42 year old Buben, who is on his way to “collect” visits to all the world’s countries, as a member of the US based club “Most Traveled People”. Holiday heavens like Micronesia and the Maledives, warzones like Afghanistan and Iraq or true exots like Turkmenistan and Transnistria have already been ticked off his bucket list, but his most memorable trips took him through Africa.
V. 1
PERSONALITY
Barely 18 years old he crossed the Sahara offroad for the first time, all the way to Nigeria, in a little Suzuki jeep. “We got lost deep in the Algerian desert, long before GPS was invented, probably straying into Libya, but with luck made it back on track”. Last year he was one of the first “tourists” in South Sudan’s capital Juba, but not simply by flying there. In fact he drove in a combination of private cars from Djibouti through Somalia, Ethiopia’s famous Omo Valley and Northern Kenya’s infamous Ilemi triangle. But Buben’s connection to Africa is manyfold. His company serves clients in Nigeria (in fact a new Buben & Zorweg showroom will soon be opened in Abuja), Egypt, Botswana, South Africa and expands rapidly on the continent where oil and other opportunities have created wealth and successful individuals. For the less fortunate citizens, Harald Buben is engaged in several charity projects, such as an orphanage and water wells in Ifakara, Tanzania. Together with two German friends he organised a private food and medicine convoy to the Dadaab refugee camps at the SomaliKenyan border during last year’s drought period.

And on a diplomatic level, Harald Buben represents Liberia’s interests as Honorary Consul to the United Nations in Vienna. At the recent inauguration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf ’s second term in office, Buben participated at the Liberian ceremonies among Hillary Clinton and other foreign dignitaries. Instead of using a private jet, he chose a more typical mode of travel. An inexpensive used 4x4 car purchased in Gambia took him through the Casamance, Bissau, Guinea and Sierra Leone to Monrovia - just in time. Where
others would need a week, Buben drove flat out in 2 days and 2 nights, just getting a short nap in Freetown. “The roads in Guinea were really rough. Bad fuel caused a car breakdown. I had to beg the police to allow me to drive at night, because of their safety concerns” smiles Harald Buben. “But I am always optimistic. I respect all people and it seems to come back to me.” It is this positive energy and his people-oriented personality that makes the Austrian so successful.

Dock Kitchen
Guerrilla, pop-up, gastronomer’s lab or post-industrial canteen? From Los Angeles to London, Paris to Milan, restaurants are not what they used to be. Some no longer even have staff. All that matters is the high quality of the food and service. Dining out has become an event. Once upon a time there was the sort of restaurant you went to because restaurant critics had praised its award-winning chef, or the stylishness of its venue, designed by top architects and maybe even frequented by celebrities. This restaurant was nevertheless a place where you sat down at a table, with tablecloths, cutlery and glasses, and were offered menus from which you chose your dishes. Today dining out is a different story: As well as being tasty and good, dinner out now has to be something memorable, an experience that leaves its mark on your brain as well as your palate. This is most certainly Ludo Lefebvre’s credo. French by birth but Angeleno by adoption, Lefebvre invented the guerrillastyle LudoBites (www.ludolefebvre. com/ludobites) restaurants back in 2007. These temporary (or popup) restaurants sell out even before they open and are notable for their casual and unusual choice of location and the excellent cuisine they offer at affordable prices. The latest LudoBites – or LudoBites 6.0 – runs from 30th November to 5th December in the space that formerly housed Max, a restaurant in the fashionable Sherman Oaks
district of San Fernando Valley. This time there will also be a communal table for last minute walk-ins. Remaining in Los Angeles, the culinary hotspot du jour, there’s Test Kitchen (www.testkitchenla. com), a restaurant in Beverly Hills where a different chef and mixologist take over every night and preview their new menus and offerings for the pleasure of whomever has booked a table (when each chef is cooking is kept a secret). This brilliant concept is the brainchild of expert restaurateur Bill Chait (the man behind Rivera, Spark Woodfire Grill and Louise’s) who has already attracted the likes of Michael Voltaggio to the project, and is due to host names of the calibre of Alain Giraud and Gary Menes. Across the Atlantic in London, Stevie Parle opened his pop-up moveablekitchen last year but it was so successful it’s now staying put. Dock Kitchen (www.dockkitchen.co.uk) is located in a converted Victorian Wharf building (formerly home to Virgin Recording Studios) north of Portobello that has become famed British designer Tom Dixon’s HQ. Pure modern British design reigns supreme here, as well as the best
Les Grandes Tables du 104
seasonal ingredients sourced from around the world. Over in Amsterdam there is a bar with no staff (and therefore no tiresome queues ordering drinks). The stylish MiNiBar (www.minibaronline. com), overlooking the famous Prinsengracht canal, was designed by Concrete (the design studio behind the legendary Supper Club) and is a place where you can drink with friends as if you were in a hotel room. The way it works? A concierge gives you a key and you serve yourself from the mini-bar lined wall while listening to atmospheric musical playlists devised by international deejays (such as Carl Craig or Pilooski). Elsewhere unexpected locations are transformed into post-
industrial canteens, such as the Milanese bowling alley which has become U Barba (http://ubarba.it ), a Genoese osteria with reclaimed furniture and a long, communal table where Marco Bruni offers flavourful local specialties; or the brand new Les Grandes Tables du 104 (www.104.fr ) in Paris, located in a former funeral home that now houses contemporary art, and which has Fabrice Biasolo at its helm. The 100sqm dining room, with its two-floor terrace, was designed by the Cigüe collective, and is the ideal setting for the brand of seasonal, high-quality

organic street food served here. The same concept can be seen at the new Hangar Bicocca Bistrot (www.hangarbicocca.it), located in the Milanese contemporary art museum of the same name, and where industrial wooden cable drums form a theatrical backdrop to an unusual dining experience. The food is seasonal, local and consumed canteen-style at an over-sized convent table made out of assembled construction moulds. There’s wi-fi throughout the space. This is the 2.0 version of the industrial lunch break, replete with video-installations, deejay sets and electronic music concerts. Someone who has most definitely transformed the rite of dining into a multi-layered experience is Enrica Rocca (www.enricarocca. com). The ‘Cooking Contessa’, as she is also known, is originally from Venice but is now a citizen of the world. Her credo is, “gastronomy as a form of art, the supreme art

of creating, giving and making others happy”. She divides herself between London and Venice, where she holds unique cookery classes that begin with a visit to the market (Rialto in Venice, Borough or Portobello in London), continue with stopovers in a local bacaro or pub and wine cellar, and end up in a kitchen where what has been learned is put into practice. The Venice classes offer a view of the Canal Grande as you cook. The sort of foodie experience a traditional restaurant would find hard to beat. n
Interesting and diverse wine and food events are growing at a vertiginous rate around the world. Identità Golose (www.identitagolose.it), the Italian fine dining fair created by Paolo Marchi and Claudio Ceroni, is a pioneer of the genre. On 31 January 2011 they are celebrating their seventh year with a new edition entitled “The luxury of simplicity: signs and gestures”. The concept behind next year’s fair is that today, more than ever, people are looking to unearth the core of what cooking is all about, “that exceptional simplicity,” explains Marchi, “that offers tradition in the form of the highest innovation”. Taste (www.tasteofmilano.it) food festivals started in London but are now in 13 cities worldwide, including Milan, Dubai and Sydney. The formula is simple: the host city’s most acclaimed restaurants and chefs gather together outdoors and present their signature dishes to visitors who eat it picnic-style on the ground, or on designer seating. Le Grand Fooding (www.legrandfooding.com) is a French food event that has subverted the sacredness of traditional gastronomy even further with its dancing soirees that have already set Paris and New York alight, and recently came to Milan. The cuisine is “free and alive” explains Alexandre Cammas, the event’s founder, and accompanied by electronic music, DJ sets, tattoo artists, exceptional mixologists and exhilarating foodie moments such as when the Michelin-starred chef Massimo Bottura prepared a veal tongue sushi-style dish in the dark wearing a miner’s helmet and light.

Hilton Star Rocks the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles TEXT: SHOLA ADEYEMO

t was a big weekend in Hollywood recently as Hilton Hotels and Resorts welcomed three of its very own Rock Stars, Novlaine Ben Brik (Hilton Paris Charles de Gaulle), George Godwin Okeme (Transcorp Hilton Abuja, Nigeria) and Conroy Jackson (Hilton Rose Hall Resort and Spa, Jamaica) to the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. These three talented Hilton Team Members submitted their Rock Star entries late last year and were selected from the many exceptional submissions by receiving the most votes on the H360 Community. The winner from each region was invited to come with a guest for an all expense paid weekend in Los Angeles to attend the 54th Annual Grammy Awards and party like a “Rock Star”. The 4th winner, Satish Cavin from Hilton Chennai, India was unavoidably absent but would be at the 2013 Grammy Awards celebration. Yours truly was the proud guest of Godwin Okeme at the Awards. The weekend started with a Meet & Greet dinner at the Trader Vic’s Lounge where our Rock Stars could get to know each other and enjoy the starry Hollywood night. The next day we set off on our own celebrity adventure throughout Los Angeles and visited the Grammy Museum, Lunch at Wolfgang Puck’s Bistro followed by a stop at the Griffith Observatory. Our day wasn’t complete until we took a stroll down the Hollywood Stars “Walk of Fame,” where our Rock Stars had a chance to see their favorite celebrity plaques. We concluded the evening with a dinner at

Samba Restaurant with a performance from the restaurant dancers. The next day our “Stars” were up bright and early so they could share their Blue Energy and amazing talent performing on the roof of the Beverly Hilton for our esteemed Guests and Contest Winners. Godwin Okeme’s performance of the ‘Blue Energy’ song which he composed was well applauded by the distinguished guests especially the Global Head of Hilton Worldwide, Dave Horton. That night it was time for limousine rides, tuxedos and stunning gowns as we walked the red carpet of the Grammy Awards with stars like Adele, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Jennifer Hudson, and Coldplay. It was a magical night filled with amazing performances, glamorous celebrities – and, most of all, brilliant Blue Energy. The Grammy after party was, to say the least, awesome! We were also witnesses to the passing on of renowned music diva, Whitney Houston. We were at the Trader Vic’s Bar of the Beverly Hilton on Friday night where we saw her having a drink with her staff members. On Saturday morning, we saw her having a swim at the hotel’s pool. We arrived back the hotel from a very interesting tour of Hollywood to the sad news of her passing on in her hotel room. Overall, the trip was a lifetime experience both for the Contest Winners and their guests, including yours truly.

ting and even dominating the international luxury shopping scene. And what better time to launch a temple to fashion, food and design than just after Milan’s venerable fashion week? This unique store is located in the heart of Milan, more specifically in the super-central Galleria Del Corso, in the 4,000 sqm space of the former Excelsior cinema that has been renovated for the occasion by the celebrated French architect Jean Nouvel. A journey into the shopping of the future, the Excelsior Milano offers the best in fashion, accessories, footwear, jewellery, beauty, design and ‘fine food’ and is aimed at people of all ages and social backgrounds who are passionate about fashion and have a curious and cosmopolitan spirit. The seven stories of the new store are laid out as follows: there’s a basement that hosts ‘Eat’s Store’, a food market aimed at a demanding public that features a restaurant divided in three areas according to different cooking styles; a ground floor dominated by a very modern designer bar that changes in atmosphere according to the hour of the day , and a ‘beauty’ zone, where you can find a Tiffany shop and the sophisticated Ladurée patisserie; and the first floor is dedicated to women’s fashion by contemporary US designers that are hard-to-find in Italy such as Helmut Lang and Alice and Olivia. The other floors are entirely devoted to fashion and run by Antonia, an iconic Milanese fashion boutique and focal point for the international ‘fashion community’. The top floor is filled with sumptuous luxury accessories and footwear. www.excelsiormilano.com

Miami Beach is a world of endless beaches, surfers trying to catch a wave and blonde women sipping mojitos at the many ocean-side bars. Anyone visiting this ‘exotic’ metropolis during a coast-to-coast tour of the US should definitely make a trip to The Webster, the massive three-storey concept store located in the beating heart of Miami, in a 1939 art deco building designed by Henry Hohauser. The interiors have been completely renovated and feature high

Paris
Paris is an institution when it comes to concept stores. The most notable ones are most certainly Merci and Colette, but they were not the first. This privilege rests with L’Eclaireur on the Champs Elysées, founded by Martine and Armand Hadida. Thirty years after its opening the Hadida couple have launched their sixth space in the opulent and luxurious setting of the Royal Monceau Hotel, whose interiors were revamped by famous French architect and designer Philippe Starck. The name of the most recent addition to the Hadida family of stores is Le Royal Eclaireur and is located on the central Avenue Hoche. It is eight stories high, features a restaurant, an art gallery and various boutiques selling French and other brands like Celine and Oscar de la Renta. Conceived to look like an elegant, spacious and refined hotel suite, Le Royal Eclaireur is without a doubt an experience aimed at a curious public that is receptive to new and contemporary challenges. www.leclaireur.com

Visit the jewel-like Parc Monceau if you can. Michelin-starred restaurants are no longer in vogue, now the ultimate foodie experience is a cave à manger, a wine bar where you can try some of the nation’s favourite gastronomic dishes (above all foie gras) accompanied by fine wines that truly make the ingredients sing. Try Le Verre Volé, a small bistrot near the Canal Saint Martin that offers a small-but-sweet menu and organic wines. www.leverrevole.fr

Istanbul Atelier 55. In the collective imagination Istanbul comes to mind as a deeply exotic place and its skyline of mosques and minarets, its Grand Bazaar and its spice market do a lot to fuel this notion. But it’s more than this. Situated at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, this city on the Bosphorus offers a lot more than its image suggests; it’s vivacious, cosmopolitan and in perennial evolution, in step with the times and current trends. The lively neighbourhood of Galata, the trendiest part of the city, has just seen the opening of a new concept store Atelier 55, a sophisticated space that brings together exclusive and cutting-edge design objets with fashionable clothes, elegant jewels and accessories for all tastes. This is the only store in Istanbul where you can find brands like David Koma, Avsh Alom Gur, Charlotte Olympia, Umit Benan, Bora Aksu and Notting
Hill Design, but Atelier 55 also sells own-brand fashion and accessories and jewellery by Turkish designers like Kismet, decorative ceramics and paintings by local artists. The whole experience
is ‘sweetened’ by the presence of an inviting cafe in which people can take a break, drink a coffee or read a good book. www.atelier-55.com

. In a city as ground-breaking in cultural terms as Berlin it’s no surprise there’s an equally cutting-edge concept store. Located in the central district of Mitte, this is the second shop opened by Andreas Murkudis, brother of the famous fashion designer Kostas Murkudis. It opened in July in the pulsating heart of the German capital, in the Potsdamer Strasse, one of the most important roads in the city that begins in the famous Potsdamer Platz, a potent symbol of the New Berlin. Andreas Murkudis is the name of the store’s founder and of the shop itself and distinguishes itself for its simple design. It has external pillars on view and inside is characterised by an all-white look, against which the clothes and design objects (ranging from artisan items to jewellery) stand out. Andreas Murkudis offers garments and accessories by labels like Maison Martin Margiela and Celine and jewellery designed by Stephanie Schneider or Julia Menthel. www.andreasmurkudis.com
