SALZBURG
Explore the sights of Austria’s beautiful Baroque capital, Vienna, which for centuries was the centre of the splendid Habsburg Empire. The city remains infused with the grand imperial spirit in the form of magnificent palaces and grand mansions surrounding the Innere Stadt. The city’s cultural heritage is mainly musical, the great composers like Beethoven, Brahms, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert and Strauss all having lived and performed here. Vienna is a city of music, but it is also synonymous with gourmet fare, cakes, coffee, the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Lippizzaner stallions at the worldfamous Spanish Riding School. Vienna is a captivating capital that blends Italian romanticism with a Germanic orderliness.
Until 1816 Salzburg was a city-state, independent of the Habsburgs and ruled by powerful prince-archbishops. It is situated on the northern border of Austria, 70 miles (113km) southeast of Munich, in a picturesque setting surrounded by mountains. Mozart was born here and the city’s fascination with its most-famous son is best demonstrated during the Salzburg Festival which presents world-class performances of opera, drama and concerts over a period of six weeks each summer. Mozart’s impression has been left all over the town - his image is on every postcard and chocolate box and both his birthplace and family house are now museums offering detailed insight into his life and work.
Hand-painted Austrian signs
The city is also the home town of Baroque and the south side of the river is a Baroque masterpiece of charming churches, squares, houses and fountains.
Innsbruck
Innsbruck became the capital of Tyrol in 1429 and in the 15th century the city became a centre of European politics and culture as emperor Maximilian I moved the Imperial court to Innsbruck in the 1490s. Many old buildings from the middle ages and modern times survived in the heart of Innsbrucks old town. Innsbruck has also hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. There are two universities and several colleges in Innsbruck, with over 25,000 students altogether, (including a significant Italian population) making the city’s nightlife very lively. Enjoying Innsbruck’s natural beauty

Twice host to the Olympic Winter Games, Innsbruck boasts a rich cultural heritage coupled with a great range of premium sports facilities. Austria’s oldest town and youngest provincial capital. The oldest part of the city is built on the site of the ancient Roman city Aelium Cetium that existed between the 2nd and the 4th century. The name Sankt Pölten is derived from Hippolytus of Rome. The city was renamed to Sankt Hippolyt, then Sankt Polyt and finally Sankt Pölten.

Capital of Styria - Pop. ca.250,000 Graz was originally the site of a Roman fort. The German name ‘Graz’ was first used in 1128, and during this time dukes under Babenberg rule made the town into an important commercial centre. Later Graz came under the rule of the Habsburgs, and in 1281 gained special privileges from King Rudolph I. Must see: Lippizzaner Horse Stud near Köflach, and Styrian Wine Country.
Settled since 750BC, Eisenstadt has a vast history involving Celts, Romans, the Huns, the Bavarii, Charlemagne, and a whole host of emperors and was, in turn, occupied by the Mongols and the Ottomans. In 1766 Joseph Haydn was appointed as the prince’s Hofkapellmeister, and so began the great artistic period in the city’s history. Eisenstadt is the cultural and educational centre of the province of Burgenland.
Must see: Esterházy Palace, Haydn House Museum, Lake Neusiedler
Settlements along the Danube, near what is now the City of Vienna, can be traced back to the 5th century BC. These were of Celtic origin as is the name Vienna derived from the Celtic “Vedunia” for river in the woods. It was made residence of the Babenbergs and the city walls were raised in 1200. Vienna was to become the capital of the Habsburg empire for almost seven centuries. In 1278 the city fell to Rudolf of Habsburg, but had to compete for centuries with Prague, Linz and Graz as the imperial residence on account of its vulnerability to attack from the Turks, who first laid siege to it in 1529. In 1857, the city wall and its bastions were razed, and during the following years a boulevard - The Ringstrasse - encircling the city was created. Empress Sisi Born in Munich, Bavaria. Elisabeth accompanied her mother and her 18-year-old sister, Helene, on a trip to the resort of Bad Ischl in 1852, Upper Austria , where they hoped Helene would attract the attention of their cousin, 23-year-old Franz Joseph, then Emperor of Austria. Instead, Franz Joseph chose Elisabeth, and the couple were married in Vienna at St. Augustine’s Church on April 24, 1854. Elisabeth later wrote that she regretted accepting his proposal for the rest of her life. Elisabeth had difficulty adapting to the strict etiquette practiced at the Habsburg Court. Nevertheless she bore the Emperor three children in quick succession: Archduchess Sophie of Austria (1855–1857), Archduchess Gisela of Austria (1856–1932), and the hoped-for crown prince, Rudolf (1858–1889). In 1860 she left Vienna after contracting a lung-disease which was presumably psychosomatic. She spent the winter in Madeira and only returned to Vienna after having visited the Ionian Islands. Soon after that she fell ill again and returned to Corfu. After that Elisabeth began to use her beauty to gain influence on her husband. She achieved her only political goal whereby in 1867 she and Franz Joseph were crowned King and Queen of Hungary, and ten months later, another child Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria (1868–1924) followed. painting genius and pioneer of the Modern Era around 1900, would have celebrated his 150th birthday this year. Klimt spent most of his life in Vienna. His paintings, in particular The Kiss – one of the world’s best-known images – are rightly seen as epitomizing the spirit of optimism that heralded the dawn of the modernist era!

The legacy of Klimt and his fellow artists’ 1897 protest against outdated concepts of art, a move that culminated with the foundation of the Secession Movement, can be seen to this day: created by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the new Secession Building Exhibition Hall bears the motto of “To every age its art, to art its freedom”. Klimt contributed the Beethoven Frieze for the building. With 22 pieces by the artist, Vienna’s Belvedere is home to the world’s largest Klimt collection. There are also major works on display at the Leopold Museum, the Wien Museum and the Albertina. During 2012, Klimt’s anniversary year, visitors to Vienna can experience how the artist’s paintings have lost nothing of their allure over time.

Schönbrunn Palace Schönbrunn, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is considered one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. The Habsburgs resided here the better part of the year in numerous rooms for their large imperial family in addition to representational rooms. Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic of Austria two years after his death. Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.

Looking at the front of the building from the Ring Road, you can see the original structure has been preserved since 1869. The facades are decorated in Renaissance-style arches, and the veranda on the Ring Road side emphasizes the public character of the building. The statues of the two riders on horseback were placed on the main facade of the loggia in 1876. They were created by Ernst Julius Hähnel, and represent Erato’s two winged horses that are led by “Harmony and the Muse of Poetry”. Vienna State Opera House

However, the word “heurige” does not just describe the tavern itself, but also the wine from the current vintage, which – in accordance with tradition - may be so-called until 11 November (St Martin’s Day). Alongside the pleasant wine by the glass, the Viennese heurige also offer their guests fine wines sold in “bouteillen” (0.75 litre bottles), reflecting the richness of the variety and the special Viennese climate, and corresponding glass and tableware. And sometimes, with a little luck, “live music” can even be heard in the secluded gardens or homely parlours... Viennese “heurige”

The real Viennese “heurige”, or wine taverns, have served as a backdrop for many films. However, in the legendary comfortable atmosphere, they primarily offer the Viennese and their guests entertainment, fine Viennese wines and the fitting culinary accompaniment. A place in which to feel good, in which everyone is warmly welcome. The real Viennese heurige, in which only Viennese wines are served, are identified by a bunch of pine branches and by the word “Ausg’steckt” written on a board, which simultaneously shows when the tavern is open.

Bavarian Mountains & Salt Mines
THE Eagle’s Nest
Travel past the Hellbrunn Lodge, and on to the Austrian-Bavarian border. Continue along the Königseeache Valley, through the Bavarian Mountains, past farmhouses and the ruins of Obersalzburg, Hitler’s mountain retreat and finally arrive at the 450 year-old salt mines. Wearing traditional miner’s clothes, enter the mines and hear the legendary tales of the underground world. Descend into the grottos and take a raft ride on the salt lake. Afterwards, you will have a chance to sample some Bavarian specialities during a stop at Berchtesgaden. You will also get a glimpse of Hitler’s ‘Eagles Nest’ and a magnificent view across the peaks of the Bavarian Alps.
Commence your tour as per the Bavarian Mountains Tour up to and including the ascent to Obersalzberg. A bus and elevator ride will bring you to the Eagle’s Nest. The buses are equipped with special engines and brakes to transport you safely from the Obersalzberg to the Eagle’s Nest. You will drive along steep rock walls and deep gorges and you will experience views up to the Hoher Goll and across the peaks of the Bavarian mountains. With the elevator (365ft long) you enter the Eagle’s Nest (5000ft). There will be time to explore and maybe sample some Bavarian specialities, before your descent and return journey to Salzburg. Tour ends at Mirabell Square.

Silent Night Memorial Chapel © Salzburg Tourism
Every year on December 24th at 5 p.m., a memorial service in honour of the creators of the Silent Night carol takes place in front of the Silent Night Memorial Chapel.
Thousands of people from around the world attend the ceremony and finish by singing “Silent Night” in their many languages. A tour-guide will escort you by bus through the foothills of the Alps, along the Salzach River valley to Oberndorf where you can participate in this touching Christmas celebration. A full day excursion takes you along the Salzach river valley past many of Austria’s ski resorts. Near Schladming, location of the 1982 Ski World Championships, we ascend up to the ‘Steirische Ramsau’ 1000m above sea level at the base of one of the Alpine glacier massives - the Dachstein. In the village there is time for a stroll in the frosty fresh air and lunch (at own expense) in one of the local inns. Your guide will inform you of the possibilities. Then you’ll hear the jingling bells on the reigns as the sleighs line up across the field and your winter sleighride begins! A stop for refreshments is made along the way where the horses rest and you have the possibility to try some Austrian specialities. Hopefully, it will be a day that you will remember long afterwards! Excursion destination may be altered due to snow conditions.

Silent Night - Holy Night
The Christmas carol “Silent Night! Holy Night!” was heard for the first time on Christmas Eve in 1818 in the St. Nikolaus parish church. Following the damaging floods of the 1890’s, St. Nikolaus’ church was demolished and the Silent Night Memorial Chapel was built on the site and consecrated on August 15, 1937.

GRAZ With a population of just over 250,000, Graz ranks as Austria’s second city, though it is often overlooked. The Styrian capital’s geographical situation, straddling the River Mur and surrounded by rolling hills, is undeniably attractive. The elegant palaces town houses and museums of Graz’s UNESCOprotected centre bear testimony to the city’s Baroque heyday, while a spate of cutting-edge galleries, notably the Kunsthaus Graz, point to the city’s present-day role as one of central Europe’s main venues for contemporary art.
